I'm looking for advice on how to organize quotes/words clippings. I have them
all in one bin now but when I go to create a page, it's almost impossible to dig
through the box to find ones that 'feel' right. Do you store by category? If so,
what are some that you use? Any ideas would be great! Thanks.

Rather than categorizing all of my potential collage elements (quotes, words, clippings, etc.) I have two pfoto boxes that I work with.  One is right next to my work area and contains only the materials that I'm most excited about, newest to my collection, have something in mind for, etc.  I also include any recent hand painted papers, left over bits from other projects, etc.  The other box is on a much higher shelf and contains materials that I've had for a while, don't quite know what to do with yet, haven't decided I want to get rid of it just yet, etc.

Every so often, when my material box is getting either too full, empty, or no longer inspiring me at the moment, I will spend some time sorting the two boxes side by side (using the same guidelines described above).  This way I always have enough materials at my fingertips but not so much that I'm overwhelmed.  This is what works for me.

Does anyone else get the first message correctly, then all the rest in on word a time in a row down the left side? It's driving me crazy.

Hi Linda,

I have not had this trouble with Composition Art Journals, thank goodness, but it’s exactly like you describe it on another Yahoo group I belong to (Cyberscribes). I’m wondering if the problem has to do with it being on the Digest version. I’m set up for individual emails on this group, but the Digest on Cyberscribes. I’m going to change my settings for Cyberscribes to Individual emails to see if that will clear up the problem.

Hugs,

Eliece

Hi Linda,

It's good to see your name (and your journal pages) again. My
messages are coming through just fine but I've had that happen in
other circumstances in the past, usually when something has been
forwarded a bazillion times. Some of my messages come through in one
very long horizontal line that requires scrolling across what seems
like it would be several feet long if printed.

It's happening on all my groups, I have had to switch to "traditional" digest. I hope it gets fixed soon! Funny that you don't get it on this group, because I do!

I say yes, what you create qualifies as an art journal.

"An art diary, art journal or visual journal is a daily journal kept by artists,
often containing both words and sketches, and occasionally including Mixed media
elements such as collages. Such books will frequently contain rough workings, in
cartoon form, of ideas later to appear in finished works, as well as acting as a
normal diary, by allowing the artist to record their day-to-day activities and
emotions."

I have been super busy this summer and haven't had much time for anything art related (including any ability to keep up with e-groups, etc.). However, life is back to normal (or as normal as it can be for me) and I have recently added a blog post regarding my latest experiment: ART in the DARK!
If you are interested in a little experimentation of your own, the previous blog post has a little more detail on how I achieved this look.
Thanks for looking.

Hi all, joined the group to get a little mojo back. I was diagnosed with Breast
Cancer the end of Jan 2012 and had a double mastectomy by the end of
April....sad thing is (other then cancer) is the fact I havent picked up my
journal since Feb 2012.....Kinda sad to see the Messages are very limited this
year, but I have LOTS I can look back on from previous years. Thanks all for
what I am sure will get me MOVING...looking forward to looking at all the posts

I hope you find the inspiration and the mojo you are looking for! I hope that you have  beaten the cancer completely and are healing. I can't imagine the battle you must have fought! I have been an on again, off again journaler and am trying to get back myself. Right now I am keeping a "sentence a day" format and it seems to be working to help me to want to get going again.

I know this kind of sounds dumb, but I think the thing for you to do is just do it.
No thinking about or designing a page just grab some paint, rip some paper up, glue it in, some adds that catch your eye, a little bling, gel pens, and then just write in what comes to mind or leave it and go on to another page and start over. You can always go back and journal or even change the page into something better.
Do that for a bit and I think it will calm down and just become normal journaling.  Sort of a release of 'What the Heck.'

Stormygrl, I too am a cancer survivor. Feel free to contact me if you want to
talk. It was almost a year after the cancer before I journaled. I did scribble
with black crayon and cry a lot! Actually It was almost a year and a half. You
have just been through your own private hell. Don't be too hard on yourself.
Your muse will return.

Has anyone ever done a Journal Swap?. How was it done?. Does anyone know of a
Journal swap going on?. I am not even sure how its done, but saw a short article

sounds fun, just wondered your input.

I've been in a few calendar journal swaps, but they are more like round robins.
Here's what happens:

Twelve participants are assembled and all commit to finishing out the year. Near
the end of the calendar year, each artist select his/her own calendar
journal...the kind that have a week per page spread that you get in the calendar
section of barnes and noble or your favorite bookstore. The person running the
swap makes a mailing list order and each person starts her book as much or as
little as she likes and then sends it to their person by a certain date in
December. That artist then has most of January to work in the January section of
the book. She then sends it on to the next person, and so on.

This way, each of the 12 artists gets to work in the book and each artist gets
her own book back for December.

There's also lots of photo sharing and communication throughout the year. It's
fun!

Hope that helps a little,
Tracey

I've done a few that were a bit less of a commitment than a year. One was three months, three people, three books. I've also done themed ones where each person chooses a book and a theme and then they get passed around. My theme was "what frightens you?" another was "best place I've ever visited". I don't remember the time frame, but that one was quick. Once you got the book it had to leave your hands within a week. :0)

Hello,

I just finished up a journal swap with another group. There were four of us in
the swap. (Although I have been in swaps with more people) We kept the book 3
weeks and then moved it on to the next person. It took us about four months to
make the round. I enjoy these swaps. The only down side can be the cost of
mailing! Postage isn't as cheap as it was when I started swapping.

Some swaps are shorter. Some of more people. I've even done a one on one swap.
Some are themed some not. Like I said I enjoy swapping journals.

I've never had any luck with Journal swaps, at least with ones I've sent out. Of
three I only got one back and it had only 3-4 pages done.
I have participated in a couple of journal swaps started by other people and
most of them got their book back, but a number just faded into the ether. I
guess someone just wanted to keep them themselves. A shame because the art in
them was great. Felt bad for the owner.
Have had more success with page journals were you have say 6 people in your
group and each person makes 6 pages and sends one to the other members so you
get at least 5 pages to add to your book. Sort of like a tip-in trade.

Another trade we did was a group of members got together and traded pages of
backgrounds and you got to put what you wanted on them after you recieved them.
With the page trades you have to pick page size and whether it is portrait or
landscape style so when you bind them they all flip correctly.
You also have to state which side you are going to bind them so they don't put
something metal or something on that side.

I haven't done a swap in ages simply because of bad swappers and the price of
postage. I'm in Canada and most of the people in my egroups are in the US.
Costs a little over a dollar to send just a letter to the States.
One egroup I was with we did a lot os page swapping but that group no longer
exists. Was fun though.

hey there,

i posted a couple new pix on my flickr account - a couple sunflower pix, a macro pic of a bee in pollen, a flamingo, and goldfish in a bowl.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/jacks_friend/

i LOVED the pic of this bee as it was collecting pollen -- it looks like it has just rolled in pollen. there is so much pollen stuck to its legs, i don't know how it walks/flies now! there are some things i like so much, i say, "i could just swim in that" -- but it looks like this bee has truly tried that!

the bee picture (as well as the flamingo and the goldfish pictures) was entered into an art show at the university where i work, for faculty and staff of the university. these are on display from now until march 15-ish for anyone to view, so i popped in there today to view the display. i am always amazed to see the artwork of other instructors/staff -- it allows a glimpse into a better understanding of that person.

i am anxious to see/hear what feedback people have on these, especially the bee!
