Great Expectations ... the modern version of Dickens classic is visually gorgeous with a wonderful soundtrack - set on the Florida Gulf Coast with Ethan Hawke and Gwyneth Paltrow. Anne Bancroft plays the eccentric Mrs. Dinsmore. His sketchbook is a central feature. and a very spooky Robert DeNiro

Prospero's Book - a dramatic fantasy ... another Greenaway film of great beauty, starring Sir John Guilgud and based on Shakespeare's The Tempest
played out in dance and words; all the dialog is spoken by Sir John throughout the film. The 'books' form the central plot, Prospero's magic depending on them.

These two films and the one you mentioned, Greenaway's The Pillow Book are worth watching again and again.

Janice

ps ... also Ruby in Paradise, a character study with Ashley Judd. Trying to find herself and writing in her journal

Thanks for the suggestions so far, I'll add them to my list. Last
night I just watched "Frida". I was knee deep in my Master's degree
studies when it first came out and I never saw it. Also I saw "The
Virgin Suicides"- very haunting. One of the Lisbon sisters keep a
journal. I read the book, but I saw the movie again. There is
something very visceral about Sofia Coppola's films.

That is a real fun book, and I used to know someone who had a life rather like that.  Her name was Phyllis, and she had been a showgirl in London in the 20's and 30's, appearing in the London premieres of "No, No, Nanette" and "Rose Marie", and touring to Paris, Dresden and Berlin.  Even in her 70's she was tall, elegant and full of naughty stories, and the day I found out she was a year OLDER than my very sedate grandma sticks in my memory!

She's probably making the angels laugh right now, so dear Phyllis, Rest in Peace!

Dear All

There are some new journal scans at my website: www.tatt22dgoddess.com

Please click on the 'Cambodia 2' file to view trvael journal scans
from Angkor Wat and surrounding temple complexes.

Please click on the MUSÉE CURIOSITÉS file to view a new collage piece
in my little Japanese fold out book. The piece featured in the centre
is the new part and its called (very cheekily): "You want me?"

If you are at all interested in tattoo's and the purpose behind them
(mine are buddhist, peace and sea themed), please take a look at my
recent Blog update at my site.My own ink has featured in many ink
zines both in Australia and international and have won peoples chocie
awards. My tattoo artist is Sash via Wicked Ink, Penrith NSW. He is
wonderful!

I'm not sure about a 'muse' inside of me (help!:0) but I do enjoy

Hi Everyone,

We have a long weekend here in Oz, & my DH is away with his mates playing cars, so I have been arting in my studio.  I created my second last spread in my colour journal.  I have posted it on my blog, sadly,  the scan is terrible – it almost looks luminous………..it is sooooooo soft & lovely in the flesh……It is soft, soft moss green & duck egg blue & white which are the colours of our new rooms in our house.

Hi All,

I joined the group a couple of days ago and wanted to introduce myself and say “Hi.”

I’m Becky Short. I live in North Georgia with my husband of 12 years and our 4 year old daughter. I’ve been involved with art in some way just about all of my 42 years with concentrations in mixed media and quilting. I have been away from my art for various reasons for several years. This has made me literally ill and I am recommitting to it for both mental and physical health. I love collage, art journals, ATCs, art quilts and traditional quilting. I have been working on quilts and quilting primarily this year but have dug out all my collage and mixed media materials and am ready to dive in again with art journals and ATCs especially.

I think using composition books for art journals is a fabulous idea!

Thank you for having me and looking forward to learning, sharing, and playing J

Hi,
I've just created an album and posted fifteen drawings that I completed
during the time my husband was in the hospital and in the weeks after
his death. A few of the pictures are a little blurred; I don't have a
scanner and I didn't want to use the flash on my camera and take a
chance on washing out the colors.

I am a math teacher by profession, and that geometric trait shows
itself in my work, I think! The book is a small spiral scrapbook
purchased at Wal-Mart, and most of the pens are Faber-Castell Pitt pens.

so sorry to hear of your husband's death and the sad times that you're going through after dealing with that. hopefully art will give you a place to express yourself and to find relaxation/joy/peace.

after looking at your artwork, though, i have to say "wow, susan. great work and lots of color. maybe you should be designing quilt patterns? really like that last one in the folder -- that would make a great quilt!"

Hello Susan,

My condolences on the death of your husband.  Thank you for sharing your pretty, colorful drawings.  They remind me of lovely stained glass windows.

By the way, you indicated you’re a math teacher by profession.  Well, let me tell you I have plenty of admiration for people who excel in math!  My most difficult class ever was calculus.  I still remember the silly rhyme I wrote on the bottom of my last calculus test.  It was: I’M HARDLY EVER CERTAIN, QUITE, IF OR NOT MY ANSWER’S RIGHT.  My professor probably groaned when she read that!

Keep on journaling!

Hi Susan,

I'm quite taken with your drawings. You and I had emailed privately
earlier sharing our feelings about our losses. Unlike you, I have had
a real hard time getting back into my art. It's coming back slowly,
but at least it's coming back. I'm curious -- is this your usual
style, the geometric patterns. It seems to make so much sense to me
that you would make this neat and structured and controlled kind of
art when I know everything in your life must have felt chaotic and
scary and out of control.

Despite the pain you must have felt making your drawings, I very much
enjoyed looking at each one.

Take care and hope you're feeling a little better these days.
