Hi, I am a new member, so forgive me if this is old hat. I have seen
in some of your posted journal pages that some of you create monthly
sketch grids. Well, I sat myself down at my desk last night and
created one such grid in my journal. Question: now what do I do with
it? Obviously I know the purpose is to sketch once a day, but I'd
like to hear a little more about it if anyone would like to share
their thoughts.
Thanks sooo much!

Kimberly, I decided after reading on some of the Yahoo groups that
drawing is a skill and not an inherited talent that wanted to see if
it is true that everyone can learn to draw. Everyone said that you
have to practice a lot so that you can learn to "see" what you are
trying to draw. That is why I did my sketch grids. They motivate me
to draw everyday because of the commitment and the empty boxes
staring at me. I did a drawing almost every day for 6 weeks. I'm no
DaVinci by any means, but I can see improvement. Also, I just like
the way the grids look. I just posted the last one on my blog this
morning.

Just thought I would post an intro so as the moderator
asked.......you would know I am only too real a person LOL>
I am new to art, have done crafts and needlearts of all kinds since I
was about 5, all self taught. Now after almost 45 years of believing
I am not artistic, tis true I cannot draw or paint real life, I am
determined to awaken that little girl who loved to paint and make
things. I am new to the idea of an artjournal but would like to start
one and so here I am. I also have been doing scrapbooking and rubber
stamping and cardmaking off and on for 10 years or so. Serious health
problems prevent me from working as a critical care nurse, and keep
me home much of the time. I am hoping to learn lots and grow some
too........thanks for having me. Dorothy in BC by the sea

I finished my second compo book since Laurie introduced us all to painting
the pages. Of course I had another one waiting and have two spreads done in
it already.

On the first spread I tried a new technique similar to the one Laurie used
where she took a photo and extended it to fill her page. The cover of the
new Daniel Smith art catalog really appealed to me when I pulled it out of
the mailbox yesterday. I knew it would wind up in my journal. I took it to
my art table not knowing what I would do with it and decided to try
extending it. I really like the way it turned out. I journaled on it with
pens in a similar color so that the writing wouldn't contrast too much and
draw attention from the painting. The first thing my DH said when I showed
it to him (I don't show him many of my journal pages. He occasionally will
pick one of them up and look through it.) was, "Why did you write all over
it?" He is the first to admit that he just doesn't get it.

I've got a question... You mean on each page there is a grid pattern on the page? How faint is it? I took a drawing 101 sketch and I learned how to use a sketch grid and I love it for drawing from a picture. I've done a couple of pictures from Nightmare Before Christmas using the technique. Where did you find it? I MUST have one!!

I love the idea of the sketch grid, and the Monthly grid. As soon as I
saw this yesterday I immediatly made one for my journal, I hope to write
at least something everyday. So much better than having a whole blank
page to look at! I will scan it and post it later. I will make a sketch
grid too. You guys are so inpiring!!

Hi Dawn,

I have a blog question for you - how do you get one? And does it cost

Tracy,

I enjoyed reading your blog, and I totally love the fact that you are
drawing again and creating just because it makes you happy. Those are
great stories to hear from other artists. I like your gridwork. I'm
still trying to complete mine----I'm on the two month plan. ha ha

I've been making collages, atc's and messing with fabric this week. I
did one journal page at Borders the other day when I was taking some
notes about abstract ideas--that's about the only journal stuff I
managed to fit into this busy week. ;(

I posted the projects and one journal page on my blog.

I have uploaded my Feb journal grid, and some random journal entries
from years past. I currently use 5 1/2 X 7 1/2 scrapbooks for my
journals, but when this one is done I will switch to the comp books. I
hope you guys are not too insitant on the comp book journals!! The
pages I selected seem to have a lot of drawing on them (I was actually
surprised at how much drawing there was in my journals!) but I often
use stamps in my journaling. The Myrtle beach page started with a
stamp. Hope you like them!

Mikki - this sounds interesting; would you say just a bit more as to how this works.  I have in my mind that there is a template with cut-out squares that you place over a picture.  Then choose one of the squares and re-draw in your chosen grid square in your journal what is in the template.  .....Is this anywhere near the mark????

Hi Mikki,
love your blog, BTW!
The grid I was refering to is taking a page or two in your journal, dividing it up into small squares, then using each small square as a separate sketch space. The idea, to my understanding, is to get your drawing skills out everyday, even when a huge white space is too intimidating to tackle. The small boxes are a lot easier to conquer, I am realizing.
Check out Dawn's blog to see an example.

In drawing 101 this is what we learned to do. The teacher went to one of those kodak picture maker places with a CD that had pictures from Nightmare Before Christmas and printed 4x6 prints of them. You could do this with any picture though, he bought overhead transparencies and cut them to fit the size of the picture. We then drew a grid on the transparencies which could overlay on the picture. On a piece of paper we drew a grid to go with the one on the transparacy. All you need to do is draw what's in the box on the picture onto the paper, it makes it quite easy. I'd love to find a notebook with already drawn grids since when I'm at work all we have is a yard stick.

Nice, Linda! I love how you have your calendar pages on more
than one page. I never thought of doing them like that. It's got
me thinking out of the box. I like the way you fit Feb. 28th on, too.
I might try a new arrangement for my March calendar. Thanks for

Love your blog! I have never seen fabric/fiber ATC's. What fun!
Your ATC's are beautiful.

One of these days I am going to try knitting. I don't know how to
knit, but I could fall in love with all of the wonderful yarns. I can't
resist touching them. The colors and textures are amazing.

Tracy,

It's about 40 degrees here in Florida this morning, and wouldn't you
know--my husband could use that scarf today. He is headed out the door
with the towel around his neck again.

Ugh! I still have 1/2 the scarf to finish. ha ha! Oh well. I'll get it
done in time for our 85 degree weather. LOL

I have a lot on my art calendar today---I want to prep at least 5 more
art journal pages and get some atc's out in the mail. Seems like the
knitting will have to wait until this evening. :)

Hello everyone,
I am new to the group and I just took some time to check out you work.
Everyone seems to have a distinct style even with the same
techniques. I did this type of work before it was recognized as an
art form. I collect unusual names of people and places and this is
normally done while vacationing, although, my home state, Texas, has
more than its share of odd names. At one time, I dreamed of writing
books filled with those unusual names but I failed to take into
account that I couldn't write. The what that was in my head wouldn't
come out of my pencil. I could get a bit of drawing out of my pencil
and I really enjoy using my hands to create almost any art. I have
found that once that I have the basics of a craft down I get bored but
I think that using my journal as a collection of techniques and ideas
for future projects will keep me interested in this one. My journal
will become my memory...which has become smaller as my age has gotten
bigger.
I really enjoyed seeing your work and I hope to add some of mine to it
later on.
Dare to dream,
Pam

Hi Pamala! Welcome to CAJ from another Texan. In what part of the
state do you live? I am way down south near Corpus Christi.

About the odd names. I share that interest too. Well, names of all
kinds really. Did you know 'Goliad' (the town) is an anagram
for "Hidalgo', the name of the priest who first settled there, with
the silent 'H' removed?

I am currently considering finding (wish me luck!) and photographing
anything with my first name on it. Then I think I will use them in a
collage maybe...

I have to jump in this conversation about odd names and Texas.  In the hill country there is a small town named Joe Jan Van.  Isn't that great?  Wouldn't you just love to tell people you're from Joe Jan Van, TX?

My son rodeos and sometimes just for fun he puts that as his hometown so that when the announcer says his name and hometown he says that.  LOL

Pam - Since about 1958 or so I have been collecting bits from, mainly, the society news.... when "....." marries "....." she becomes "....."  I think I started one Sunday when I saw that Jan White married Bob Sales and became Jan White Sales.  Unfortunately, these clippings are here, there and everywhere.  Between you and Jay Leno, maybe I will corral them and get them into one of those brand new comp books I got for Christmas!

Is there a swap in this?  We could all collect things for, say 3 months or 6 months, with other members' names on it and then send it all out!

I know you won't find Zura anywhere, but my family calls me by my middle name, Beth.  That shouldn't be too hard.

Anybody like the idea?

What a cool idea!  I think I'll keep an eye out for my name, too -- and if
I see any 'Wandas' out there, I'll take a pic for you!

Thanks for the offer, Laurie... and it looks like ZuraBETH ;) has
come up with a great idea. So, I'm thinking we'll carry a camera
with us for a period of time, photograph things from our list of
artists' names and then get the photos developed and send them on
their way to each other??? In some cases we might get lucky and find
a name or two in print on an ad or something, maybe.

Keep me posted, Zura. I am definately interested!!!

Hello, my name is Michaele and I am new to the group.
Love working on art journals but have never worked in one
of the Composition books. Looking forward to the challenge and
seeing some of your pages and ideas.
Thanks,
Michaele

I took pictures of the rest of my ceramics class journal and posted them
here:
http://portfolio.iu.edu/lgatlin/journalpages/Ceramics3.htm

There are of course more pages than the ones I took pictures of, but these
should give a little inspiration!
