I'm still using AVG 7.5.750 which they last updated at the end of April! I really should upgrade to AVG 8... is that free to use? I did have a problem when...

No issues here, touch wood. I'm surprised we (as in the UK) still have electricity, with many of our power stations being past, or nearing retirement....
