Greetings

The Catholic Committee on Scouting is going to to schedule a training for
counselors who might want to serve the youth in their troops as emblems
counselors. The Ad Altare Dei (AAD) is targeted for 7th and 8th graders though
older scouts may work on this emblem. If you might be interested in this
training, please let me know. It is usually a half day training and will
probably take place at the John Paul II Center (1300 S Steele Street Denver)..

Subject: Fwd: Boy Scouts Historical Merit Badges
cyndifyke
Send Email Send Email

Hi:

Four historical merit badges can be earned between April 1, 2010 and December 31, 2010.

-          Carpentry
-          Signaling
-          Tracking (formerly called Stalking, name changed for obvious reasons)
-          Pathfinding

We announced these earlier, and then they were put on hold.  Now the program is continuing for a limited time (April 1, 2010 – December 31, 2010).
More information, including requirements and the old merit badge pamphlets can be found at:

Important notes:

They do count toward advancement as elective badges (but not as Eagle required badges).

Scouts to Experience the History of Scouting

Advancement Opportunities Highlight Scouting’s Heritage

In 2010, the Boy Scouts of America celebrates a century of influencing the lives of America’s youth. Since its beginning, the BSA has used advancement as a method to achieve the aims of Scouting—character building, citizenship training, and physical and mental fitness. Each aim is emphasized in the four phases of the Scouting program: Cub Scouting, Boy Scouting, Varsity Scouting, and Venturing.

One aspect of Boy Scout advancement—the merit badge program—has always been an important element of Scouting. Through completion of merit badge requirements, generations of Scouts have learned lifetime citizenship lessons, personal fitness habits, and life skills. Countless careers and lifelong hobbies have been launched as a result of the merit badge program.

In the past century, many changes have occurred in the merit badge offerings. As society has changed, the Boy Scouts of America has adapted by revising the requirements, implementing name changes, adding new merit badges, and in some instances, eliminating some badges altogether.
To allow today’s youth members to experience a piece of Scouting’s past, the BSA’s 2010 Historical Merit Badge program will bring back four discontinued merit badges. These merit badges must be started and completed during the centennial year, starting April 1, 2010, through Dec. 31, 2010. The historical merit badges are Carpentry, Pathfinding, Signaling, and Tracking, which were all released between 1910 and 1911. In addition to completing the same requirements as Scouts did a century ago, today’s Scouts will learn what that their counterpart in 1910 might have experienced.

They will learn why Morse code might have been important during a period when most homes had no TV, radio, computer, telephone, or electricity. However, the value of the program for young people is to understand the changes in 100 years of Scouting.

Badges may be earned by individual Scouts, but districts and councils are encouraged to offer opportunities for Scouts to complete requirements for at least some of these merit badges at Boy Scout resident camps, local merit badge workshops, or special 100 Anniversary Celebrations.

Subject: Venturing Age Requirement Changes

Venturers,

Don't forget about the age change for the Venturing program. This is a great opportunity to springboard some teens into summer Venturing, where they can participate in many fun adventures with their peers. This an additional recruiting avenue that is coming open for those who are prepared to seize the moment and introduce some young people to an exciting program.

The current age and grade eligibility requirement for participation in the Venturing program is 14 years of age and completion of the eighth grade.

Effective May 1, 2010, the minimum age requirement will be changed to either:

14 years of age

OR

13 years of age and completion of the eighth grade.

The maximum age for participation remains under 21 years of age.

In support of this change, a list of frequently asked questions is posted at www.scouting.org/venturing.

Dear Scouters:

I had an amazing banquet dinner last night courtesy of Rubio's Fresh Mexican Grill. The food was really outstanding, and the service was tremendous. The cost was less than
$ 10.00 per person and everyone really enjoyed the evening. I know that we can get "stumped" trying to find a reasonably priced meal for our Scouts and their families so I thought I would forward this information for your future banquet consideration. Thank you!

Thank you for sending this to everyone.  I know how they feel, our trailer was also stolen last year.  Of course it had everything we used for our troops, just like their troop, camp kitchen, stoves and everything that went with it.  I hope they recover, we still do not have a trailer or many of the things that were in it.  Our trailer was stolen from the church at Easter and Race Street, near Arapahoe and University.  It was stolen from Troop 557,  The church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

Thank you

Jack Marble

Here is an opportunity to assist families in need again this holiday season. I, personally, do this every year. Please contact MARY if your unit is interested in donating.
Also, please pass this on to others you feel may be able to assist. There are many needs with these families.

Thank you! Have a great holiday!
Karen

Hello friends!

It's that time of the year...   Kelley Whalen, my friend and a counselor at Prarie Middle School, has some individuals and families in need of a helping hand this Christmas.  Kelley only shares information with us on families who are really trying to make it on their own, or whose circumstances are making it very difficult to provide any Christmas for their children this season.  One year, the children from one family requested sanitary supplies, shampoo, blankets and towels for their gifts. That's it.  Prarie is the largest middle school in the state, and over 50% of the students qualify for free or reduced meals at school.

If you are able and willing to help make a child's Christmas brighter, please let me know.  I can share with you the situations and you could choose how you would be interested in helping.  Please forward this email to anyone you think might be interested in helping as well.

My cell phone number is 720.339.6940 if you'd like to call. My email is teamsieker1@....   Please be patient if I'm slow to answer - I just had knee surgery yesterday and will take a little while to get back in full swing.  We would need to have all this wrapped up and to Kelley at the school by mid-December.

Thanks in advance.  God bless you all!

Mary

Hello everyone!

I got a call for scouting assistance for the Rocky Mountain Chapter of the Arthritis Foundation for their annual Run/Walk. They need helpers badly!

Please pass this on to any and all you think would be interested in helping. Remember, working with Special Needs and learning more about it is part of the new CQU, and this would qualify.

Please let me know ASAP as I need to get back to the coordinator as soon as possible. Thank you!

Here is the info....

the 5K Run/Walk is at Wash Park, Sunday, 12/12, registration starts at 8 am inside South High School.  Benefits the National Arthritis Foundation, Rocky Mountain Chapter.  It is a fun family event, with teams, costumes, kid's dash, music, treats and pets are welcome.  The actual start time for runners/walkers is 10:15 am, at the side of the high school on Louisiana and Gilpin.  The finish line is actually inside the park, just north of the first lake, at about Tennessee and Gilpin.

The positions we are still in need of are the finish line water people, and handing out the goodie bags, possibly some help with the kid's Dancer's Dash, and chip removal from the 'real runners' at the end of the race.  The Chip removal and finish line water/goodie bags would probably be from about 10-11:30.  Kid's Dash from about 9:15-9:45.

Thanks for everything!

Karen
