Who said it was too late to attend National Jamboree??? Please make sure this information gets out to your units.

National Jamboree will take place on July 26-Aug 4th 2010. Troop 911 has 8 open spots for youth. It is located in Highlands Ranch. The meetings take place the last Sunday of every month at St Lukes Church off of Broadway and Highlands Ranch Parkway at 1pm. I encourage your scout to attend this Sunday if they are interested.

Here is what you will need to know. The troop will tour East Coast historical sites for 6-8 days prior to the start of Jamboree and then will join the Jamboree for 10 days. Boys must be 1st class and 12 years of age by July 1 2010 but not be 18 by Aug 4th, 2010. The event will cost $2500. This includes ALL airfare, food and the tour prior to Jamboree as well as the Jamboree itself. Fundraising opportunities are available and the scout can earn the entire cost if he so wishes to participate.

This is the 100th year of Scouting and the last time Jamboree will be held at Fort AP Hill in Virginia. It will be an experience to remember and the boys will have a lot of different activities to choose from while at Jamboree. They will also be a part of history and meet scouters from around the country. Rock Climbing, canoeing, orienteering and many other activities are planned.

If you are interested, please go the the Denver Area Council website and search for National Jamboree. Once there, please click on the troop 911 link to sign up at our Council. You will then need to sign up at Scouting.org with your son's membership number. That will be on their blue membership card that they should have received. If you do not have that number, please call the Scout Office at 303-455-5544 and they should be able to get it for you.

If you have any questions, please feel free to call or email me. This is going to be a once in a lifetime event! If your son is nearing 15, this will be his last chance to attend as a scout. There is no obligation to come to the meeting this Sunday and check it out and meet the Scoutmasters and other troop members.

YIS,
Karen Mansfield

I apologize, I gave incorrect information on my last email regarding signing up for National Jamboree. Here is the correct information. I am sorry for any inconvenience.
Karen Mansfield

The Denver Area Counci will be sending eight (8) troops to the 2010 National Jamboree in Fort A.P. Hill, VA. Space is still available to attend this once in a lifetime event.  To register for the event, follow these steps:

1)  Sign in to the National website at MyScouting.org (You can create an account if you do not already have one.)

2)  Under "Events" in the left column menu, select "Event Registration"

3)  Select "National Scout Jamboree"

4)  Select "2010 National Scout Jamboree Youth Participant Application", and following the instructions to fill out the form.

This registration process does not guarantee a spot in a local Contingent Troop.  Currently, there is space available.  If you have further questions, or would like to join a specific Jamboree Troop, then please contact a member of 2010 National Jamboree Committee:

You can also visit www.bsajamboree.org for more information from the National Jamboree website.

For families that think they may qualify and don't expect to generate enough fundraising to offset the necessary cost of attending the Jamboree, you can apply for a scholarship.  Unfortunately, we need to have applications in to us by the end of this week.

** Please contact Steve King (720-313-2596) or Jeff Hartig (303-471-6979) ASAP if you would like to submit a scholarship application.

Hi Exploring Advisors,

I hope that this email finds you well and enjoying the Fall.

We are partnering with Chili’s in Lakewood to do a giveback night to the Exploring Program.  On Monday, October 19th, anybody that eats at Chili’s in Lakewood and brings in the attached flyer will help the Exploring Program to receive 10% of the stores net proceeds for the day.

Our Exploring Board will be there that night at 6 pm and would love to meet any Advisors and Explorers who can come down and help us celebrate and support the Exploring Program.

That night is Monday Night Football, the Broncos are playing at the San Diego Chargers, so we thought that we would show some Bronco Spirit and TWO BRONCO CHEERLEADERS will be at Chili’s from 6 pm to 8 pm to take pictures and sign autographs.   Yes, you are reading the above print right…Bronco Cheerleaders.  Kick back, watch the game, and get your picture taken.  It will be like you are there in person J

Please help us to pack the Chili’s in Lakewood that day/night with Friends, Family, Advisors (family is included), and Explorers.  Kathy and I will be there that night and look forward to visiting with everyone and catching up.

Some of the Logistics:

·         The Flyer MUST BE brought with you and given to the waiter in order to get credit for the order

o   This is an all day event, the flyer can be used for lunch or dinner or both (cheerleaders will only be there at dinner time, 6 pm to 8 pm)

·         This is only happening at Chili’s Lakewood

o   88 Wadsworth Blvd, Lakewood, CO 80226

·         The Date:

o   Monday, October 19, 2009

·        There will be TWO BRONCO CHEERLEADERS there to sign autographs and take pictures from 6 pm to 8 pm, please bring your camera.

We hope to see you all there and thank you for all of the great support that you provide to the Exploring Program.

Kathy and Charlotte

Ability Awareness - I'm Tyler

I just had the opportunity to experience an incredibly motivating and inspiring presentation by Tyler of Waterloo, Iowa.

Tyler was discussing the need to engage in Ability Awareness. Ability Awareness involves "recognizing what a person, any person, CAN do is much more important than what he/she can't. Many people have disabilities, of some sort, to difering degrees. But much more importantly EVERYONE HAS ABILITIES."

Tyler is a sophomore at Hawkeye Community College. He has a yellow belt in karate. He was in his Waterloo West High School's marching band. Tyler played a lead role in the Waterloo Community Theater. Tyler is an active young man . . . and Tyler has cerebral palsy.

Tyler is a person who doesn't discuss what he can't do. He concentrates on what he CAN do. Tyler earned his eagle scout and created the 7-minute video, I'm Tyler, as his eagle project (click here or on the image above to watch this video.) He and his family distribute DVDs of this video. They have shipped over 6500 DVDs. They don't actively market the video, but they have had requests from all 50 states and over 20 countries and US territories. This is a message that needs to be shared.

Tyler has been honored by receiving the National CEC "Yes, I Can" award; UCC National Disabilities Minstry Award and the Iowa CASE "Tyler Student Achievement Award" scholarship. He has spoken at conferences across the country. This is a message that needs to be shared. Visit his website!

"Ability Awareness is looking past the disabilities to the Abilities. It's Acknowledging Challenges, not obstacles, and find the accommoddations to conquer them. It working as a Team to reach a Common Goal . . . SUCCESS!!!"

Tyler has a dream . . . to change the world and the way it interacts with people with disabilities . . . to the world of CAN.

This sounds like a good project for the Scouts from our District to support. If any units and/or individual scouts are interested in helping - such as selling hamburgers and hot dogs in the parking lot of grocery store, and/or doing a car and bike wash to fund raise to acquire the helmets, etc for this project.

Dear Brother Knights,

It is time to start planning for the 2010 Bike Drives.  We met with ICHC yesterday and have a tentative date of May 15th at Swansea Elementary school for the Bike Fair.

In preparation for this yearly event, We would like to form a 15 person committee from St Mark, Pax Christi, and Our Lady of Loreto to help:

-Collect Bikes

-Be present during Bike drives at Churches, Elementary schools and other places.

-Help us raise Funds

-Work the day of the Bike Fair

2010 goal for bikes has been set at 500.  We currently have 50+ bikes in storage ready for next year.

These are the main costs associated with the event:

-         500 Helmets =  $ 4,000 - $ 5,000

-         600 Water Bottles and 200 T-shirts = $ 2,000

-         500 Bike Locks = $ 2,500

-         200 Lunches = $ 600 (Subway gives us the lunches at 50%)

-         500 Water Bottles = $ 80-100

-         Breakfast is currently donated by Starbucks and Einstein baggles.

Council 1498 Provides the Cotton Candy Machine, Ice Cone Machine and Popcorn Machine for the event.  We run with the cost of supplies.

Additionally 1498 contributes $500 towards other expenses.

Pax Christi contributes $250 toward expenses.  (come on guys let’s bump it to $500)

As you can see much help is needed to raise $10,000 for this worthy event.

Please contact AJ Stapleton 303 523-8229 aj@... or Patrick McAllen 303 514-0711 ingapat@...  with any questions or if interested in helping.

New Belt Loops, Pins, and Merit Badges are Coming

When the BSA was founded in 1910, boys weren’t into video games, scuba diving, or robotics. But as we enter our second century, Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts will be able to earn awards in these topics, thanks to a new focus on change and innovation.

New for Cub Scouts

http://www.scouting.org/filestore/prospeak/images/009_nov/art/ac_sports.jpg?w=200&h=290&as=1Video Games is one of 13 new belt loops and pins in the Cub Scout Academics and Sports program. It’s been more than 10 years since the program expanded, so volunteers and Cub Scouts from around the country have been waiting for this change.

In late January, Scout shops across the country should begin selling a new edition of the Cub Scout Academics and Sports Program Guide (No. 34299), which will include these additions:

Academics Subjects:

§  Disabilities Awareness

§  Family Travel

§  Good Manners

§  Nutrition

§  Pet Care

§  Photography

§  Reading and Writing

§  Video Games

Requirements for the new awards will mirror those for the existing belt loops and pins. Besides the addition of the new awards, the Cub Scout Academics and Sports program remains the same.

Sports:

§  Hiking

§  Hockey

§  Horseback Riding

§  Kickball

§  Skateboarding

New for Boy Scouts

http://www.scouting.org/filestore/jpg/220-005WB-1.jpgScuba Diving is the first new Boy Scout merit badge in three years; it will become available in December. Click here for a brochure about the badge http://www.scouting.org/filestore/global/link-PDF.gifthat you can share with your volunteers.

Four other new merit badges will appear over the course of the coming year:

§  Inventing (First quarter 2010)

§  Geocaching (Second quarter 2010)

§  Scouting Heritage (Second quarter 2010)

§  Robotics (Fourth quarter 2010)

These badges are being introduced because they received positive feedback in a youth interest survey.

If five new merit badges seems like a lot, it is. By comparison, the BSA introduced just six new merit badges between 1992 (Collections) and 2006 (Composite Materials).

When you have an idea for a new merit badge, the first step is to complete a proposal form, which you can get by e-mailing merit.badge@... http://www.scouting.org/filestore/global/link-MailTo.gif. Proposals that fit merit-badge criteria and rank highly with youth members are sent to a volunteer task force and the Program Content Committee for review and development.

But the new badges aren’t the only innovation. In the past it took three years to create a merit badge. Now, that time has been cut to just less than a year, helping to keep the badge topics and content fresher than ever.

Please help spread the word about the new merit badges, belt loops, and pins through Web sites, newsletters, e-mails, social networking, roundtables, and events. As always, www.scouting.org is your best source for the most current information about these awards.

Dear Fellow Scouters, Friends & Family:

I've received a request from The Boys and Girls Club of Commerce City below:

This is Kerri Dunagan with the Boys and Girls Club in Commerce City. I am in search of a group of volunteers. We have recently had a group of 20 young volunteers cancel their offer of help for our holiday party on December 17th. This group had committed to bring crafts and presents for our kids.
We are in dire need of volunteers to help serve meals and run crafts as well as distribute presents to over one hundred children. I would love to have a group of students come join us for the evening. Now we are also welcoming toy donations; $10+ toys for kids ages 6 - 16 if anyone is inclined to give as well.
I would be so grateful for any help.
Here are the details for the event:

Greetings

The Catholic Committee on Scouting is going to to schedule a training for
counselors who might want to serve the youth in their troops as emblems
counselors. The Ad Altare Dei (AAD) is targeted for 7th and 8th graders though
older scouts may work on this emblem. If you might be interested in this
training, please let me know. It is usually a half day training and will
probably take place at the John Paul II Center (1300 S Steele Street Denver)..
