FYI, the April meeting of Venture Crew 645 will be on Monday, April 10 at Christ Lutheran Church in Highlands Ranch.  The meeting will start after announcements at the troop meeting-shortly after 7:00 pm.  The church is located at 8997 South Broadway.  We will plan activities for the rest of 2006, and hopefully elect officers as well.  Hope to see you there!

Cyndi-

Yes, I received the link to the campout dates.  Thank you.  FYI, we had 14 attendees at the Laser Tag event (4 adults, 10 youth) last Sunday.  However, only one, Jeff McMillan, was from Troop 645.  I did receive regrets from a couple of guys in the troop who were interested but out of town.

I’ll get the word out on the April 10 crew meeting at the church.  Since we will be planning future events, it would be great if we could get some adults involved.  Perhaps we could have a short committee meeting after the crew meeting is done to discuss adult leadership opportunities in the crew.

Good Morning!

April 10th should not be a problem for a crew meeting. The boys will be working on First Aid and as you know most of the older boys will probably be bored.

Next Monday the scouts are going to the bowling alley at Brunswick Zone.

Did you receive the link for T645 with their calendar (for campout dates?).

I'll be at Copper Mtn. with Will today....home tonight.

Bob was unaware of the laser tag issue and was told about it. I have requested a letter from Jim Underhill regarding the Health and Safety issue of laser tag that can be sent out to all units to clarify this issue.

Many of our leaders are unaware that this is not a Scout sanctioned activity. I will forward the letter as soon as I receive it and appreciate help circulating it to all units in the Arapahoe District.

By the letter of the law, that is true.

In the Safe guide to scouting, it lists that scouts Cannot participate in anything that has a "Gun" or what looks like a "Gun" pointed at anything that is not an official target.

Therefore, Laser Tag is not on the list of acceptable games.

Hi.  Saw the emails.

Laser tag and paint ball are expressly prohibited activities.  see the list of "Prohibited and Restricted Activities" in the Guide to Safe Scouting.   website connect is:  http://www.scouting.org/nav/enter.jsp?s=ba

The exact paragraph reads as follows:

  • Pointing any type of firearm (including paintball, dye, or lasers) at any individual is unauthorized. However, law enforcement departments and agencies using firearms in standard officer/agent training may use their training agenda when accompanied with appropriate safety equipment in the Law Enforcement Venturing program.
  •
We need to discuss at District Committee, this discussion is the reason National has now made the Health & Safety Training one which is required every 2 years.

    hope that clarifies,

    Subject: FYI

Scouts can not use some guns but there is nothing that says Scouts can not play video games with weapons that don’t fire projectiles. Scouts can fire BB guns, 12 gage’s and 22’s on a range.  I have never seen anything saying that a Scout can’t shoot a light beam.  Check the Guide to Health and Safety. I believe that it will tell you the same.

    Hi Everyone,
I am looking for a good group of NEW Range Officers for Archery.  My first concern is Cub Scouts at Day Camp and other events in our District.  They need a positive upbeat instruction so the shooting sports can be more fun as they are learning.  Safety in always an issue and the more trained individuals we can have on the range the better.  We also have brought Sling Shots to the Day Camp for the second year and they couldn't be happier when they get to use them too.  This range also needs to have trained Range Officers on site.  Please think about this and I will tell you that you can get your training at Scout Show for 3 hours in the morning or the longer version is at Peaceful Valley May 5th and 6th.  It starts at 6pm Friday and ends 8pm Saturday.  You can e-mail me or call for further information or questions.

We are proceeding with the conversion of YPT training programs along with "Fast Start" programs to a DVD format and eventual distribution to each unit in the Council.  The DVD's will be program specific in that the "Fast Start" for Cub Leaders will coincide with the Adult YPT training and the age specific YPT for Cub Scouts, and similarly for each of the programs in Scouting.................Boy Scouts, Varsity and Venturing.  Plans are to have this available to units by June 15.  The package will include several updates to handouts, and a facilitators guide for units to administer the program.

Units are reminded that they must have YPT training for adults who attend council properties or programs for 24 hours or more, That the current YPT program with trainers is still in effect and the on-line YPT program is available to anyone needing YPT, so District Commissioners, please remind Scouters at roundtables and every opportunity of the need to continue YPT training at every level.

    All:

This year’s task of determining who got awards was indeed challenging, with so many great booths.

As Cyndi’s associate judge, I got to listen to stories, tie ropes, get sprayed by water, eat cool stuff, etc.!

For the fourth year in a row, Pack 75 got the best of show for the Pikes Peak or Bust traveling Western Nat’l Park show complete with running the rapids and a spritz of cool water!  This booth was over the top (OTT)!  And the cubbies really knew their stuff! (coulda won the “most likely to have been done by Cubbies” award as well if there was one)

    What can I say - P75 is a DYNASTY!

Comments on the winners (by age group):

Appearance - Pack 564 – shootin’ gallery – way cool backgrounds

Spirit - Pack 222 – mining – these guys told a great story and helped me pan for gold with “real” gold-colored lead!  Alchemy rules!

Theme - Pack 147 – Bronco roping – some of us varmits even got branded! – that was the OTT part of it

Appearance - Troop 835 – Food (outside) – great booth – lots of danglin’ shotgun shells and posters for wanted varmits (fictional, of course)

    great corn bread and stew!

Spirit - Troop 839 – Shave and Save(?) - Bone marrow awareness – WOW, what a theme, donate to a worthy cause to have yer hair shorn off in an old-fashioned    barber shop… now if I could just have gotten my 16 year old Life Scout to attend…!

Theme – Troop 324 – Wild West theme – arena – the Scouts knew their stuff and did the work themselves.

Appearance- Post 99 – Jeffco Sherriff – great info and way cool Dodge Charger (2006)

Spirit - Post 1574 –RAMPART S&R - what can you say about having bloodhounds at the show…gotta love ‘em!

Theme - Crew 604 - RAMS (Glen Mills & John Wright) great theme (rifle, archery, muzzle-loading, shotgun)! Good job as usual, and they trained some leaders as well!

For all the rest, thanks, and see y’all next year!

I think everyone should be aware of this.  Forward to the UC's, please.  The RT staff should see when we can fit in some announcements/info presentations.  Call me if you need more info.

    Subject: Internet advancement

We had a meeting yesterday to discuss and set a launch schedule and program for the internet advancement routine now available.  Here is what was decided.

    1. The advancement committee will spearhead this activity.  Each district advancement chairman will be briefed and trained at their May meeting.  They will then work with the District Commissioner to arrange for a training of unit advancement chairs.  They are hoping to use an adjoining room during the August roundtable to conduct this training.
    2. Letters and access codes will be mailed to committee chairmen in June.  This will allow them to designate the person from their unit who will handle this and ensure their attendance to the training.  Also, computer savvy unit Scouters and/or those that have used internet re-chartering will most likely feel confident enough to try this during the summer.  Since it is very user friendly, it should not be a problem.  It will also allow us to have a slow build up in users thereby easing support requirements.
    3. Training and information will be offered to all leaders attending DAC camps this summer.  PV will have computer access available for units that wish to input their summer camp advancements while still at camp.
    4. Professional staff members will be trained at our May staff meeting.
    5. The CD containing the training PowerPoint and printed resource materials will be made available to district advancement chairs at their May meeting.  District Commissioners will also receive this so that they can train their staff of this program.  Having Unit Commissioners promoting this new initiative will be very helpful.  To do so, they need to be trained!  DC’s will receive their CD’s at the next meeting in May.  If you want it sooner, please let Jim know.

If you have any questions, please let me know. Tim Bennet will serve as the professional advisor for internet advancement.  Sue Boot, our registrar, will be the council contact for support.
