It was part of what is known as the Louisiana Purchase, which included quite
a few states <grin>, but it was not part of the "state" of Louisiana. In
1819 Louisiana was already a state. Before statehood, the state of Louisiana
was called the "Territory of Orleans" while the rest of the area in the
Louisiana Purchase was called the "Territory of Louisiana". Very confusing
<grin>

I would suggest that you look in the Missouri Territorial Papers. A copy of
these should be at the nearest 'large" library or university library.

Hi--

My FIKE ancestor settled c1819 in Pike Co., MO in an area
which sould soon become Ralls Co.

If I'm not mistaken, that area was part of Louisiana at that
time.

Where are the records for this area from c1800 to when MO
was a Territory??

Thank you, Donna

Press Release

The Louisiana Historical Society is pleased to announce the
second
annual Creole Family
Symposium to be held on October 22-23, 1999 at Jones Hall,
Tulane
University. Please notify
your members through your newsletter.

Each year the symposium examines the history of three
creole families
who originated in
New Orleans in the 18th or early 19th centuries. Historians
of the
families will discuss the
reasons for the persistence of the families, their differing
life
styles, their education and
occupation, where they have lived, and what they bring to
the present.
The symposium will
begin with a key note speech on Friday night, October 22,
1999 at 7:30
p.m. The first of three
talks covering the history of the three families will begin
at 9:00 a.m.
Saturday morning. Lunch
will conclude the symposium and will include a general
discussion of the
papers. The general
chairman is George A. Hero, III. The Special Collections
Division of
Tulane University is
co-sponsoring the symposium. There will be a fee of $25.00
per person
to cover lunch and other
costs. Reservations should be made by sending the
appropriate sum to the
Louisiana Historical
Society, 5801 St. Charles Avenue, New Orleans, LA 70115.
Attendance is
limited to 150 people.
The speakers and families to be discussed at the first
annual creole
symposium—
Keynote speaker: H. Parrott Bacot is the Executive Director
of the
Louisiana State University
Museum of Art. He will speak on “Creole Interiors.”

Family Historians:

The Olivier Family. Mrs. George Hero III will discuss the
origin and
evolution of the Olivier
family in Louisiana. She is an author and TV produceer.
The Destrehan Family. Dr. William D. Reeves will speak on
the Destrehan
family, its houses
and plantations. Dr. Reeves is an Independent Scholar.
The Decuir Family. Mr. Peter T. Eshelman will address the
symposium on
the Decuir family of
Pointe Coupee Parish, emphasizing its many different
descendants both
white and black. Mr.
Eshelman is the President of American Specialty, an
insurance company in
Roanoke, Indiana.

The speakers will address the following questions:
—Does the family continue to have an identity in New
Orleans? Does the
last name survive? Is
there some remaining sense of identity or family unity?
—Did the family produce scions that sprang up generation by
generation
to bring it forward and continue its name, unity, or
identity?
—Which family members, male or female, can be identified as
the "glue"
that held the family
together at various times? How did they accomplish this?
—In what parts of town did the family live through the
generations? What
kinds of houses did
they build or choose to live in? What was the size of the
family at
different times? Where did
they worship, or educate their children?
—Did the family experience or avoid divorce, scandal, or
disappearance
from town? Did they
avoid or experience debilitating illnesses that might have
wiped them
out? Did they move back
to Europe or the Old World?
—Are there black and white branches to some families? What
were the
colonial and antebellum
origins of some of the prominent free person of color
families in the
community? Were they
able to pass their wealth on to their children? What has
happened to
them?
—What were some other ethnic characteristics of local
families? Whom did
the children marry?
When did Creoles and Americans begin to intermarry? To what
extent did
these and other
Creoles marry their relatives? When and why did they stop
marrying
close relatives? When did
the extended family begin to break up?

Thank you for distributing this notice!

Hi to all:

I am working on a book about Col. Tucker and the men in his group who built
Fort Claiborn in Natchitoches Parish. The time period was about 1800 to 1805.
I have a good bit, but if anyone has any ancestor that they found in that
area and could add vital records for them, I would appreciate the data (will
give credit for data) Many of the men stayed in that area after their
enlistment was up. There will be a section in the book that will contain data
abstracted on each man in the group. Several died and it gives the details.
Several joined, left, etc. and it gives dates.

I've completed the transcribing of the records and in process of compiling
the men's data section.

Researching FAVRE

Jean Claude FAVRE b. c m. (1) Emashapa, a Choctaw.

I'm descended from their daughter:
Marguerite FAVRE b. c1760 m. Jean-Pierre LA FONTAINE

I'm seeking more info on these FAVRE and LA FONTAINE
families. I was told by Br. Jerome LEPRE about Emashapa,
but have not yet found a record. I wonder where the info
came from.

I've found several Pierre LA FONTAINES but no specific
marriage record. I suspect the marriage may have been a
casual arrangement. There is a Pierre b. c1761 and another
b. c1765.

I did locate baptismal records for daughter born to
Marguerite, Euranie LA FONTAINE. Marguerite is listed with
no last name (typical of Indian registrations) and the
record is listed in the FAVRE index. Euranie's father's
name comes from baptismal record of her first child.

The families resided from Mobile along the Gulf Coast to New
Orleans, LA from the early 1700's.
