Hey Cobalt peepers,

It's Rick, your fearless host. (well, I'm afraid of some
things...mayonaise mostly)

Tomorrow night at the Cobalt, I'll have me brand (spanking) new
book "Brendan Constantine Is My Kind of Town", and will read
from it at the end of the reading.

I promise to pause for enough time for anyone to run screaming
out of the room before I read the Group Poem.

Hope some of y'all can make it...the usual info: Cobalt Opens at
8:30 pm, the reading starts at 9.

Have a beautiful Tuesday.

Rick

P.S. Next week is the featured week at the Cobalt and the Valley
Contemporary Poets will be presenting poet Larry Colker. More
on that next week.

THE ROOM: NEW AND SELECTED POEMS by BILLY COLLINS

"Billy Collins writes lovely poems--lovely in a way almost nobody's
since Roethke's are. Limpid, gently and consistently startling,
more serious than they seem, they describe all the worlds that are
and were and some others besides."
			 --John Updike

	 "Luring his readers into the
poem with humor, Mr. Collins leads
them unwittingly into deeper, more serious places, a kind of journey
from the familiar or quirky to unexpected territory, sometimes
	 tender, often profound."
			 --The New York Times

"What Collins does best is turn an apparently simple phrase into a
numinous moment. . . . A poet of plenitude, irony, and Augustan grace."
			 --The New Yorker

Billy Collins has published six collections of poetry, including
Questions About Angels, The Art of Drowning, and Picnic, Lightning.
He teaches at Lehman College of the City University of New York and

a former Poet Laureate and a central figure in the poetry world,
brings his passionate intelligence to The Best American Poetry 2001.
In his engaging introduction, Hass writes that after sifting through

ZERO GRAVITY - HOSTED BY DJ KRAZY KAREN
WEDNESDAY AUGUST 22 ~ 7:00 - 9:00 PM (PACIFIC)

It's some sort of miracle! One moment it wasn't, the next moment it
was! Actually, its just music. Well, its an assorted variety of
music, like chocolate or something. I just play whatever I feel like
cause I'm the boss! The Boss doesn't like any music, its good music.
Up beat dance, house, trance, techno, old school 80's, fresh hip hop,
europop, eurodance, ethnic sounds. The good stuff. The stuff that
makes you wanna go "UH UH UH".

FEED YOUR HEAD - DJ RICK LUPERT
WEDNESDAY AUGUST 22 ~ 9:00 - 11:00 PM (PACIFIC)

Bring your head and make sure it's hungry. Feed Your Head presents
"SUMMER" as the summer ends with the usual assortment of unusual
music, poetry, and commentary, occasionally alluding to the idea of
the summer, the hot summer, the school-less, jump in the lake, sell
your shoes, sweat on your dinner table summer. And sometimes not.
Join in. Listen. Don't be mean to your neighbor. Love. Listen.
Summer. You

This Tuesday, August 21, the Valley Contemporary Poets are pleased to welcome
BRANDON BACCHUS to the stage as part of our ongoing monthly reading series at
the Cobalt Cafe.

Co-host of Poetic License at the Zen Cafe, Brandon is the author of "Out of
Bondage" and brings a certain Nawlins Homeboy je ne sais crois to his poetry
and his performance. You'll like his reading so much, you'll wish you had
beads to throw at him to get him to read more!

As always, the poetry reading, which features the longest-running (and most
time-generous) open reading in the San Fernando Valley, will be hosted by
that devil-may-care, travelin' fool, Rick Lupert. Participate in the open
reading and add your two lines to the notorious "Group Poem." Then sit back
and watch the VCP's own Brendan Constantine lose it in spectacular fashion as
Rick reads the results!

The reading starts at 9:00 p.m., and there is a one-drink minimum.

The Cobalt Cafe
22047 Sherman Way (at Topanga Canyon Blvd.)
Canoga Park
(818) 348-3789 (for information, directions)

Future VCP/Cobalt Features:

September 18 - Larry Colker
October 16 - Imani Toliver
November - TBA
December 18 - Erica Erdman
January 15 - Michael C. Ford
February 19 - Larry Jaffe

Wombat is not an insult. Basically, the light is so
bright up on stage, Rick couldn't even see that the
person walking by was an actual person. It's an

Black Magic: Forbidden Expressions Inspired By Orisha Traditions
Guest Curated by Carla Cummings and Gregory Williams
The Orisha Traditions of Lukumi, Santeria and Candomble, all having
their roots in the ancient traditions of Ifa of the Yoruba people of
Nigeria, have inspired and informed us Los Angelinos in terms of the
visual and performing arts, but also in terms of philosophy,
spirituality, culture and world view. In our multicultural and
multiracial landscape, we invite you to come share and celebrate this
cultural phenomena as we reappropriate "Black Magic" as the beautiful
and rich Africanities that permeate our lives, especially in the areas
of the fine and performing arts.

For more information, please contact: Carla Cummings at

POETRY SUPER HIGHWAY BOOKSTORE

~ Check out our online bookstore for personal recommendations as well

~ Featured this week in the Poets of the Week section of the PSH
Bookstore is LONGITUDES by JOHN BIRKBECK.

You're walking down the richly-appointed hallway of a luxurious
Florentine palace, basking in stupefied wonder and awe of your
surroundings. Suddenly, one if the lavish tapestries is yanked away
and you're left looking at what's really there-- curious water marks
on the wallpaper. That's what reading Birkbeck's poems is like; the
yanking away of apparent reality, and the glimpse underneath of the
virtual reality. This poet is a magician!

				 - Frank Battaglia

Emily Dickinson said, "I know it is poetry if I feel as if the top of

that kind of poetry; his celebration of the ordinary moment turns
mundane life experiences into significant events and transforms
ordinary observations into profound ideas. In this collection, his
skillful use of sound and diction go beyond his previous works as he
continues to create fresh images to explore the experiences of
childhood, war, marriage and family, ranching, life and death.

McDonald's poetry just keeps getting better in form and content.

Bookstore is ALL OCCASIONS by WALT McDONALD.

Emily Diskinson said, "I know it is poetry if I feel as if the top of
my head has come off." Walt McDonald's collection, All Occasions, is
that kind of poetry; his celebration of the ordinary moment turns
mundane life experiences into significant events and transforms
ordinary observations into profound ideas. In this collection, his
skillful use of sound and diction go beyond his previous works as he
continues to create fresh images to explore the experiences of
childhood, war, marriage and family, ranching, life and death.

McDonald's poetry just keeps getting better in form and content.
This collection, All Occasions, is definitely worth buying.
