Epidemics in America 1628-1918

Since I got such a good response to my previous posting about Epidemics that
occurred in our country's history, and so many more people have expressed an
interest in learning more, I am posting several sites that might be well
worth visiting. Some of them even have more detailed and worldwide
epidemics which can be of interest also.

A copy of the original deed, which I have abstracted below, was
among papers provided by Ailene (Mrs. Murray W.) CRAIG to Mrs. Mary
L. SANDS (both of Columbus, GA) in 1988:

Deed: State of Georgia, Muscogee County, 18 JAN 1884. C. R.
McCRARY, C. S. McCRARY, C. G. DAVIDSON, W. G. McCRARY, Alice?
McCRARY, Sarah L. McCRARY, all of Muscogee Co, GA, Fletcher D.
CUMMINS of Harris County, Lucy O. McCRARY of State of Alabama, C. R.
McCRARY as Guardian, B. F. McCRARY of Ala. and J. J.? McCRARY of

lying in the 8th District of Muscogee County in said State, known
in plan of said District by No. 202 containing two hundred and six
(206) acres more or less, with a reserve of 9 acres in northwest
corner of said lot to run south 2 acres deep and east 4 and a half
acres deep, also 3 acres and 6 and a half rods attached to said lot
202 a part of lot No. 227 in 8th District Muscogee County, bounded
as follows: beginning at a lightwood stob on the line between lots,
thence west on line dividing lot No 227 from lot No. 202, seventy
four rods to a chestnut stob, thence to east of south 12 rods and 12

last named stobs so as no part to be below high water mark, thence

Public, Muscogee Co, GA. [extreme bottom of document cut off in this
copy]

Fletcher Davis McCRARY m. 28 OCT 1879 in Harris Co, GA, to Thomas
Jefferson CUMMINGS.

I would like to know the identity of C. G. DAVIDSON above.

Also, I am interested to know if the household listed as "S. G.
McCRARY" in line 18 page 300A of the 1840 federal census of Muscogee
Co, GA, is actually Timothy G. McCRARY. This household was in the
vicinity of Clapp's Factory. The household of my gggg-grandfather
Alexander MACKEY is listed in line 29. On p. 303A, M. M. McCRARY
(line 26) and G. L. McCRARY (line 27) appear. Two doors away is
William POOL and four doors away is Moses LAND - these are my
kinsmen. On the preceding page (302), appear Laban C. POOL, M. H.
POOL, and Mathew ROGERS. On 22 DEC 1835, M. H. POOL attested before
Laban C. POOL, Justice of the Peace for Muscogee Co., that he and W.
W. POOL had witnessed a deed conveying lot No. 201 (on the waters of
Standing Boy Creek, bounding BISHOP among others) in Muscogee from
Eli STROUD to Timothy G. McCRARY. I have a photocopy of this deed
and can more fully abstract if anyone cares to have it.

Hope this is of some help -

John,
This was very interesting. There is a couple of names in here that caught
my eye. The first name was Mrs. Murray Craig. I knew her, and what a very
sweet and kind woman she was. Her Husband, Murray Craig, Sr., was one of my
relatives (distantly). His grandmother was Sarah Layfield Craig. Sarah was the
sister to my third great-grandfather Christopher Columbus Layfield. I do recall
writing you once back in the past about a Layfield that married a Land. I
just recently found a picture of her by the way!
The second name was Eli Stroud. There is a Eli Stroud cemetery over in
Alabama just outside of Phenix City. He, along with other family members are
interred there. I figured he had come from around the Columbus area because his
son fought in a Columbus (C/W) regiment during the war. There are a couple of
other soldiers in there also for whom were in Columbus regiments also. I
think they were married into his family, because several of their names are
still prominent in the Columbus area. Just thought that you would like to know
this information.

            For Genealogists
             Unknown

  'Twas the night before Christmas
  when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even my spouse.
The dining room table with clutter was spread
With pedigree charts and with letters which said:

"Too bad about the data for which you wrote.
It sank in a storm on an ill-fated boat."
Stacks of old copies of wills and of such
Were proof that my work had become much too much.

Our children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of sugarplums danced in their heads.
And I at my table was ready to drop
From work on my album with photos to crop.

Christmas was here, and of such was my lot
That presents and goodies and toys I'd forgot.
Had I not been so busy with grandparents' wills,
I'd not have forgotten to shop for such thrills.

While others had bought gifts that would bring Christmas cheer,
I'd spent time researching those birthdates and years.
While I was thus musing about my sad plight,
A strange noise on the lawn gave me such a fright.

Away to the window I flew in a flash,
Tore open the drapes and I yanked up the sash.
When what to my nearsighted eyes should appear,
But an overstuffed sleigh and eight small reindeer.

Up to the housetop the reindeer they flew
With a sleigh full of toys, and ol' Santa Claus, too.
And then in a twinkling, I heard on the roof
The prancing and pawing of thirty-two hoofs.

The TV antenna was no match for their horns,
And look at my roof, with hoof-prints adorned!
As I drew in my head, and bumped it on the sash,
Down the cold chimney fell Santa - KEE-RASH!

Dear Santa had come from the roof in a wreck
And tracked soot on the carpet! I could just wring his neck!
Spotting my face, good old Santa could see
I had no Christmas spirit, you'd have to agree.

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work
And filled all the stockings. (I felt like a jerk).
Here was Santa who'd brought us such gladness and joy;
When I'd been too busy for even one toy.

He spied my research on the table all spread.
"A genealogist!", he cried (My face was all red).
"Tonight I've met many like you", Santa grinned,
As he pulled from his sack a large book he had penned.

I gazed with amazement - the cover, it read:
"Genealogy Lines For Which You Have Plead".
"I know what it's like as a genealogy bug",
He said as he gave me a great Santa hug.

"While the elves make the sleighful of toys I now carry,
I do some research in the North Pole Library!"
"A special treat I am thus able to bring
To genealogy folks who can't find a thing."

"Now off you go to your bed for a rest -
I'll clean up the house of this genealogy mess".
As I climbed up the stairs full of gladness and glee,
I looked back at Santa who'd brought much to me.

While settling in bed, I heard Santa's clear whistle
To his team, which then rose like the down of a thistle.
And I heard him exclaim as he flew out of sight,

"Family history is fun! Merry Christmas! Good night!"

Dan,

Hope you and your wife are doing well. I've been staying busy - I was
not able to go to Georgia at all this year. I have not given up hope
for a plan to save the Clapp's Factory Cemetery, but it has to stay on
the back burner for the time being. I am going to try to make some
time for it in the coming year.

I'm curious to know if you have had any contact with Georgia Power
regarding the cemetery or project? We in the group greatly appreciate
the work your firm has already done for us, and I still intend to
proceed with a full-scale survey when we are able to do so.

I hope you enjoy the holidays!

DEAR ANCESTOR
Your tombstone stands among the rest, neglected and alone
The name and date are chiseled out of polished, marbled stone
It reaches out to all who care, it is too late to mourn.
You did not know that I exist, you died and I was born.
Yet each of us are cells of you, in flesh and blood and bone,
Our blood contracts and beats a pulse entirely not our own.
Dear Ancestor, the place you filled one hundred years ago
Spreads out amoung the ones you left who would have loved you so.
I wonder if you lived and loved, I wonder if you knew
That someday I would find this spot and come to visit you.

I have run across references on the internet you have made concerning
the "old Clapp's factory" or Columbus Manufacturing Company. I have

The subject line looks like an oxy-moron - and I bet y'all are wondering what it
has to do with genealogy. This weekend I watched Modern Marvels do a piece on
Cotton. This show did the history of cotton in the US and how it impacts us
today. For those of us who have roots in mill towns, we know the impact it had.
Remember sometime in order to know our ancestors, we need to know how they
lived.

For me an interesting part was when they interviewed a man by the name of David
CLAPP who works as upper management in a mill in NC. The 2nd mill in GA was
built in Muscogee County and run by Julius CLAPP in the early 1800's.

If you get the opportunity to see the program check it out - could explain why
your ancestor moved to another county or state.

I knew there was a reason we have such a hard time finding our ancestors, we
didn't know about the commandments . . . enjoy.

Greetings, All -

Has anyone been to the Clapp's Factory Cemetery site lately? I'm
wondering if the condition of the property has changed? I know Rose
Bird has in the past been in the habit of visiting regularly to police
for trash, and perhaps some of you other Georgia locals get by there
every once in a while? Did Georgia Power ever remove the bulk trash
that was grouped at the southwest corner of the site?

I am planning to be in the Atlanta area in October for a family
reunion and would like to organize a meeting of the Clapp's Factory
Cemetery Preservation League. The tentative date for the reunion is
Saturday, October 14, so perhaps we could plan to meet on Sunday, Oct.
15. I will try to get confirmation on the date this week.

I am interested to know what everyone has been up to. I have been
quite busy myself, but would like to talk with folks about ideas for
getting the project moving forward again.

Thanks! John in TX

I have just been informed the the family reunion I plan to attend will
be at noon on October 7 in Columbus (rather than Oct. 14 in the
Atlanta area). I would like to know, among those who would be
interested in attending a meeting of CFCPL, what the best time to meet
would be. We could meet the afternoon of Sunday, Oct. 8 or - if I can
be in Georgia for that long - perhaps we could meet on Saturday Sep.
30 or Sat. Oct. 14. Everyone please let me know what works best for
you or if you have a conflict that would prevent you from making one
of these dates. Thanks!

Everyone,

We on the Board of the Clapp's Factory Cemetery Preservation League
(Kemis Massey, Cynthia Nason, and I) are conferring to get the
organization back on track with our Master Plan. We will be meeting
in Columbus the weekend of Saturday, August 5, to discuss changes to
the group and consider how best to pursue the group's goals. All are
welcome to attend this Board meeting – I will post the time and place
as soon as we have decided on it. I also anticipate meeting at the
cemetery for a walking tour, some time during Saturday, August 5, in
case anyone wants to meet us. We will be deciding on a date for the
general membership meeting in Columbus this fall – probably in
September or October – and hope to begin having regular meetings of
the general membership then (probably either once a quarter or once
every four months).

Activities with CFCPL Are Resuming – Please Join!

The new year for CFCPL begins on September 1, and we are honoring all
past memberships in the group for the coming year. Publication of our
newsletter, The Clapp's Factory Chronicle, will resume with Volume II,
Number 1 for Fall 2006. Copies of Vol. I (four issues) are available
for anyone who wants them – please send me your snailmail address if
you would like to receive them. Those of you who are already
subscribed will be receiving these within the next couple of weeks.

Subscription to the new issues (Vol. II forward) will be a benefit of
membership in CFCPL. I encourage everyone who supports our mission to
rescue the Clapp's Factory Cemetery to join the group. Your dues and
donations will help us publicize the project and implement our Master
Plan. Membership dues are $15.00 for an individual and $25.00 for a
household annually. The year starts September 1, but if you join now,
your membership will be effective immediately and run through August
of 2007. Checks should be made payable to CFCPL and directed to:

CFCPL
c/o John Mallory Land
8182 Whitewing Dr.
Frisco, TX 75034-4522

We will be issuing receipts for past donations and current memberships
within the next few weeks. All new donations and membership dues will
receive a prompt receipt.

There are many opportunities for volunteer service with the group. We
anticipate expanding the number of seats on the Board of Directors and
will be forming committees to manage such areas as Membership,
Publicity, Fund Raising, and Research. We also hope to assemble a
team in the local area to monitor the state of the cemetery site and
help police it for litter and dumping. If anyone in the Yahoo! group
is available and interested in serving in some capacity, however great
or small, please contact one of us on the Board (our email addresses
are at the tail of this message).

Improvements Are in the Works for the Group and the Cemetery!

This year, my primary objective as President will be to make changes
to improve the structure of the organization so that it will become
self-sustaining and self-perpetuating.

Our short-term goals include more actively publicizing our project,
increasing membership involvement, and building up our general
operating fund.

Our medium-term goal is to raise funds to pay for a formal
archaeological survey during the winter of 2007-08. This survey
should make it possible to have a property survey conducted to
determine the legal boundaries of the cemetery, which needs to be
carried out before we can erect a fence or take other measures to
protect the site. We will need a fence before we can move on to other
improvements, such as any monuments, historical markers, benches,
lighting, etc., so that they will be less vulnerable to vandalism.

Our long-term goals include establishing an endowment fund to provide
for the perpetual maintenance and protection of the cemetery.

Historical research into the Clapp's Factory mill operations,
community, and cemetery is ongoing. I have currently engaged a
volunteer researcher to look up the service and pension files of
Georgia Confederate soldiers connected with Clapp's Factory. She has
recently researched some CSA men on another side of my family for me
and is only charging us for copies, postage, parking and other
incidental expenses. She is starting with some of my kin who were at
Clapp's Factory (including NEWSOMES), and I am paying the expenses out
of my pocket at present. She will be moving on to other men who
served in the Home Guard unit at Clapp's Factory and other Confederate
soldiers and veterans buried at the cemetery, and some of her expenses
will be paid out of the CFCPL general fund. If anyone is interested
in helping with archival or other research, please let us know!

We appreciate your continued support for the Clapp's Factory Cemetery
project. Please feel free to email us with any questions or concerns
you may have. Thanks again!

Everyone,

We will be holding our meeting of the Executive Board of CFCPL in the
Genealogy Room of the Columbus Public Library, 3000 Macon Rd. in
Columbus at 2:30 pm tomorrow, Satruday, August 5. All are welcome to
attend - however, be aware that this is a business meeting, rather
than a general membership meeting with a program. We will be
discussing and deciding on the mundane, every-day matters of operating
the organization, as well as the grander issues of what we see in the
future for the group.

The library closes at 6 pm, and we expect to be done well before that
time. We will adjourn to the Cracker Barrel Restaurant at 1500
Bradley Park Dr. (between the J.R. Allen Bypass and the Whitesville
Rd.) in Columbus for dinner.

Prior to the meeting, I will be at the Clapp's Factory Cemetery site
from 8 am to 10 am on Saturday, then will be attending the NEWSOME
family reunion in Phenix City.

I will also be at the cemetery on Sunday from 8 am until lunch time
(we'll be looking for evidence of the mill building foundations and
other structures). We will meet for lunch about noon at Country's
Barbecue at 6298 Veterans Parkway, just south of Whittelsey Rd., then
will doing research for a few hours at the Columbus Public Library,
beginning at 1:30 pm.

If anyone can join us for any of these events, please do. I look
forward to seeing you!

Mike and Laura,

John is on his way back to Texas. Don't know if he'll check his email when he
gets home or if he'll rest first. We talked about missing y'all at the meeting.
There were several that met yesterday morning at the cemetery and visited last
evening. Plus John was meeting a guy this am. We now have a matching washer
and dryer at the cemetery. I'll be visiting parks and recreation about the use
of the River Walk as a road. Also, I'm contacting our city councilors and GA
Power about the same problem.

We've got to get the public aware so someone will start reporting the dumping
problem.

Councilors and Park & Recreation Department;

As a member of the Clapp Factory Cemetery Preservation League, Inc., I would
like to bring to the Councils attention a continuing problem that we have with
the River Walk at Oliver. A little history to understand the current problem.

In 1832 a mill was started in the area of what is today Oliver Dam. Many
prominent early settlers of Muscogee County had much to do with the 2nd mill in
Georgia being built on the banks of the Chattahoochee River. Over the years the
area was referred to as Clapp Factory for Julius R. Clapp one of the original
owners. Since the mill was located outside the city and mill workers weren't
"wealthy", the factory provided a cemetery close to the mill and village. The
1st mill was burned by Union soldiers at the end of the Civil War. The 2nd mill
burned in 1910.

Fast forward to modern times and the River walk at Oliver. The cemetery is now
located north of the 8th light pole at the River Walk. Descendants of the
persons buried at the cemetery have organized a group to preserve what is left
of the cemetery. This weekend a group of those descendants paid a visit to the
cemetery. What they discovered was matching washer and dryers that have been
added among other trash. The problem is we've had a clean up day and removed
this type of rubbish with the help of Georgia Power. This tells the group that
someone is using the River Walk as a road to illegally dump their trash.

While we do not expect the City of Columbus to help remove the trash, we do
expect that they help protect the tax dollars spent developing the River Walk.
It was designed to be used as a walk not a driveway to an illegal dumping site.
While the preservation league had to submit a written request with details of
our plans for the clean up day (working with Georgia Power as the cemetery is on
their property) we it seems that criminals don't. I will need to submit in
writing another request to get permission to drive on the Riverwalk to remove
the matching washer and dryer from the cemetery. Then the preservation league
will have to pay the legal dump to get rid of the trash. All the other visits
we make each member parks in the designated areas and carry all the trash that
we can find out. Somehow this doesn't seem completely fair. Once upon a time,
before the consolidated government Muscogee County took care to this cemetery.
Now the descendants of the factory workers struggle to do the right thing and
fight the wrong thing.

Information on Clapp Factory can be found out

He has plans to return the weekend of Oct 8th - complete plans to be announced
later. We are planning a meeting on that Sunday. We are attempting to have
more meeting - all of that as soon as John and I complete the minutes for
Saturday's meeting.

We had a productive meeting. We then adjourned to Cracker Barrel for dinner.
John and a few others visited the cemetery. John, Cynthia and I had a wonderful
visit with Ann Walk, who lived on Bridge Island and played in the cemetery as a
child. If you subscribe to the Ledger, keep an eye out for a Bibb City School
reunion - it's held in the fall and open to anyone who attended school there.
Could hold a valuable resource for historical information about the cemetery and
surrounding area.

Ok everyone, we have some good news and some bad. The bad news is
that we could not find the grave "Dewy" that we found a year ago, but
we will keep trying. The good news is that I took some photos and
some videos. I took photos but sometimes when you look at a photo you
might not know what you are looking at or even what you are looking
for. So I took some video so you could see and hear what I am trying
to point out. I am uploading the videos on youtube.com right now, I
have 14 of them so it is taking some time. Also I will let ya'll
knowwhen I get the photos ready. Here is the link to where the videos
will be at. Oh and just to let everyone know, we had our kids with us
and so we were playing and having fun to. So dont laugh to hard at
us. LOL
