newsompage

Supersleuth Cynthia Nason is in Salt Lake City this week, and just
called with some CF discoveries, including the following burial
(previously unknown to me). Mrs. C. M. D. SIMPSON was named as a
surviving daughter of Mrs. M. J. HINES, who was buried at CF in SEP
1899:

"MRS. R. A. SIMPSON DEAD: Funeral Will Occur From the Late Residence
This Afternoon.

"Mrs. R. A. SIMPSON, the wife of Mr. C. M. D. SIMPSON, died at their
residence, No. 12 [?]Seventeenth street, at 3:20 [?] o'clock
yesterday morning, after an illness of four weeks of general
debility. She was 50 years old on June 10th last. Besides her grief-
stricken husband she is survived by five children. They are: Mrs.
Leila JONES, Miss Nellie SIMPSON, Mr. Clyde SIMPSON, and Masters
Thos. E. and Geo. E. SIMPSON, all of Columbus. She was a member of
the Broad street M. E. church, and a consecrated Christian and died
in the full triumphs of the Christian religion. She was a devoted
wife, a loving mother, and a kind neighbor. The grief stricken
family have the profound sympathy of their wide circle of friends in
this and dispensation of an all-wise providence. The funeral will
take place this afternoon from the house, at one o'clock, and will be
conducted by Rev. J. G. HARRISON [?]. The interment will be in
Clapp's Factory burying ground."

[Columbus (GA) Daily Enquirer-Sun newspaper, Tuesday, 13 JAN 1903]

Among other things, Cynthia found a photograph in a Chicago newspaper
that evidently shows a row of tenement housing in the Clapp's Factory
village. Go, Cynthia! I'll post more as I receive it. - jml

"Little Willie Pauline PRICE Dead.

"Willie Pauline, the infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Augustus PRICE,
died at their residence in Wynnton at 11 o'clock Sunday night after
five days' illness of dysentery. Had the little one lived until May
17th, she would have been 1 year old. The funeral occurred at 1
o'clock yesterday morning [sic], conducted by Rev. C. T. CLARK. The
interment was at Clapp's factory. The parents have the profound
sympathy of their friends in their bereavement."

[Columbus (GA) Enquirer-Sun newspaper, Tuesday morning, 14 MAY 1901, p.

Perhaps kin to the infant daughter of Mr. & Mrs. M. G. PRICE, who was

I just wanted to let everyone know that isn't keeping track of the progress
that FamilySearch is making in getting records indexed and available online
that the 1850 Census now includes Georgia in the searchable index and the
1900 is also available to search and view the actual images - for FREE!!!
http://search.labs.familysearch.org/recordsearch/

The 1880 has been available to search the index but the images are not
available through them.

We had John Mallory Land, Cynthia Nason, Rosebird and myself. That's 2 bag
holders, 1 sitter and 1 worker. John bagged up 31 bags of shingles (1
pile). That leaves at least 4 more piles of shingles and we can start doing
cutting back vines.

We set a table up on the Riverwalk with info available. The weather was
great for cleaning. Just wish we could get more help. The Ledger didn't
print the press release. I sent copies of an announcement to the government
channel and 4 TV stations for their "community" calendar. Didn't see
anything on them either. Oh well maybe next time. Small steps.

Hey guys,

This is Jay Odom with www.civilwardocs.com . The site has been a huge
success since it opened up in Septemeber. We have changed the site up a
little, adding an online chat forum, a "member" based format to allow
discounts, coupons and online orders able to be delivered electronically
through email. We also have the Union documents section up and running, so
we can accept orders from the Union side as well. Visit the site, sign up,
and let me know if you have any suggestions. This site is really for all of
our genealogist's friends out there, so any corrections or imputs are well
received.

As list admin I don't have a problem with posts that pertain to genealogy.
Some list admins will not allow any posts that doesn't specifically pertain
to that list and please don't have any fun. As long as it's genealogy or
history related, I don't have a problem.

Just last week on another list someone was trying to find Civil War
documents and said they we pay for whatever we could help her find. Some
Civil War info is hard to find. I simply hope that maybe one person can
find a clue to the line they are working on.

Subject: Dedication Ceremony postponed
newsompage
Send Email Send Email

Hello, Everyone,

I must apologize for having been out of touch recently and for the
lack of information regarding the upcoming dedication ceremony for
the Confederate markers. I have not been well the last few months,
but have been prescribed some medication and am on the mend. This is
by no means a life-threatening malady, but has been somewhat
debilitating for me, and I'm very sorry that it has hampered plans
and progress for the project.

Because of delays with arrangements, the ceremony has been postponed
until the autumn - I regret any inconvenience this development may
cause anyone. Within the next three weeks, we will set definite
dates and agenda for the ceremony (and for the All-NEWSOME Reunion,
which will be held in tandem). I expect that these will occur in
October; more specifics will be posted as soon as they are set.

I expect that, in the mean time, we will meet for another Clean-Up
Day, probably in late April or in May. We will also be firming that
up and will announce more details as soon as we have them.

I also have a few updates on the Clapp's Factory research to post,
which I probably will not get to until after Feb. 15. These include
the death notice for Ann WALK's aunt, Mattie Belle FAULK (we had the
wrong death date for her, and she did not drown in the river, but is
definitely buried at Clapp's Factory, according to the notice). I
have a couple of other updates to the burial list, and I spoke with a
man named Norman Cobb who lived near the cemetery as a boy and
related some of his recollections to me.

I hope everyone is doing well, and I will post again as I am able.

Thanks to all for your continued support -

John

have a couple of other updates to the burial list, and I spoke with a
man named Norman Cobb who lived near the cemetery as a boy and
related some of his recollections to me.

I hope everyone is doing well, and I will post again as I am able.

Thanks to all for your continued support -

   John

When we set the date, we'll let you know. We haven't received the markers
and really don't know when they'll be in.

I'm copying the group on this as this is exciting.

   Mike,

Thanks for the email. I've copied the president of our organization, John
Mallory Land. What is the name of your ancestor who is buried at the
cemetery? We have ordered CSA markers for the civil war soldiers we have
documentation to prove their service. We are planning a dedication at a
later date.

Genealogy Alert: Geocities to close this year

You may have heard that Geocities will be closing down later this year
(2009). There are many genealogy sites on Geocities, and sadly, many of
these
sites may be lost if the webmasters don't move the sites to a new location.
Yahoo is not notifying anyone about this by e-mail and many webmasters
have not updated their sites in years, so--more likely than not--are not
even
aware the pages they have posted will be lost.

You or someone you know may have genealogy information posted on a
Geocities site. USGenWeb & Rootsweb also have had links to Geocities sites.
Please
help spread the word so genealogy websites won't be lost.

Hello, everyone. For those of you who may not have heard, my mom passed away on
July 18. We held a memorial service at my parents' church in Dallas on July 21
and another on July 26 at Mt. Paron Primitive Baptist Cemetery in Box Springs,
GA, where mom will be buried. I apologize for the late notice to those of you
who have not heard - I thought a message had already been posted to this list,
but I was wrong. The following is mom's obituary:

<<<<Nadine (Aderhold) Land, February 3, 1925 – July 18, 2009

Nadine (Aderhold) Land, 84, passed away on Saturday, July 18, 2009, at Graystone
Manor hospice, 17207 Graystone Drive, in Dallas, TX.

Mrs. Land was the wife of Ernest C. Land, Sr., whom she married on January 30,
1955, at Eastern Heights Baptist Church in Columbus, GA. She was born Vesta
Nadine Aderhold on February 3, 1925, in Columbus, daughter of the late Archie M.
and Ethel E. (Sizemore) Aderhold. She was a homemaker and had lived in Dallas
for forty years.

Mrs. Land received a bachelor's degree in social work from the Carver School of
Missions in Louisville, KY. A long-time member of Park Cities Baptist Church in
Dallas, she was also active for years in the Town North Antique Study Club and
was past president of the Dallas Chapter, Lupus Foundation of America.

Mrs. Land was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Dorothy (Aderhold)
Redmond; and an infant brother. She is survived by her husband, Ernest, of
Dallas, TX; two sons, Ernst C. (Trudi) Land, Jr., of Refugio, TX, and John M.
Land, of Dallas, TX; one sister, Mrs. Louie F. Giglio, Jr., of Alpharetta, GA;
three brothers, Lester M. (Rae Jean) Aderhold, Sr., of Tallahassee, FL, Alton M.
(Myrtle) Aderhold, Sr., of Rockmart, GA, and Clyde W. (Frances) Aderhold, of
Orwigsburg, PA; and a number of nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was conducted at Park Cities Baptist Church, Dallas, on
Tuesday, July 21, 2009, at 10:00 AM, officiated by Dr. John McCormick. A
graveside memorial service, officiated by Mrs. Land's nephew, Louie F. Giglio,
III, will be held at 3:00 PM on Sunday, July 26, 2009, at Mt. Paron Primitive
Baptist Cemetery in Box Springs, GA, where interment will take place.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lupus Foundation of America
(www.lupus.org) or to the Mt. Paron Primitive Baptist Cemetery Association (c/o
700 Box Springs Rd., Box Springs, GA, 31801). Arrangements by Dalton & Son
Funeral Home, Lewisville, TX.>>>>

The Executive Board of the Clapp's Factory Cemetery Preservation League will be
meeting on Sunday, September 6, at 6 pm, in Columbus, GA (location TBA).
Everyone is welcome to come and hear our discussion and to voice your opinion,
if you wish. The meeting agenda will be posted to this list prior to the
meeting.

We will be holding our next Clean-Up Day at the cemetery on Saturday, October
24, from 10 am to 4 pm. Our goal will be to collect and remove all of the
remaining roofing shingles and construction waste from the site. Further
details for this event will be posted here as they become available. Please
plan to come if you can and bring a friend!

While I was in Columbus for my mom's memorial service, my brother Erny, my uncle
Clyde and I toured the Clapp's Factory Cemetery. Later, my brother and I went
back and policed for litter. There seemed to be relatively little trash about,
most of it concentrated around the siting monument placed on the bluff by
Georgia Power. Thankfully, we detected little encroachment on the interior of
the cemetery by pedestrians, cyclists or hooligans. I took up the remains of a
television set that apparently had been obscured by vines but was now exposed.
My brother and I also picked up trash and collected aluminum cans at the fishing
point developed by Georgia Power - we removed a total of eight trash bags of
litter, four trash bags of cans, and nine tires.
