Exhibited as the purest stock of the Caucasian race, rescued from slave traders, destined for some Sultan's harem, these "lovely ladies" were in reality local women who created afros by the neat trick of soaking their hair in stale beer and teasing it. They were a standard attraction in most sideshows from about 1860 - 1910.
