Greetings. I just got back from Murree and am in the process of settling in. Here is some news that might be of interest. The report claims that the remains have been "stolen". Though its not the first case of its kind, when 'well-meaning' family members and descendants took the remains of the deceased with them back home to bury them in Britain. I know of a similar case in Murree 3 years ago, though not publicised in this manner. Given the declining state of cemeteries everywhere in our part of the world and the general apathy towards them families may be prompted to take this course of action before these cemeteries disappear altogther! (Many cemeteries have already disappeared and few cemetaries remain which must be preserved.)
DERA GHAZI KHAN, Sept 20: The unlawful stay of eight foreigners in the district and their brazen-faced act of escaping with a century-old coffin of a young wife of an Indian Army Punjab Commission’s captain has become a vexed question for the local administration and the people.
The coffin of Maud Evelyn, wife of Captain M.L. Ferrar, has been found missing from the cemetery in the hill resort of Fort Munro, about 80 kilometres from here. The cracks visible on the marble grave lends credibility to the suspicion of the coffin’s theft and official neglect.
Information gleaned by Dawn reveals that the foreigners stayed for three days at the Fort Munro cemetery in violation of the ban on stay of any foreigner in the district. On Sept 15, eight foreigners, including three women, came to Fort Munro by two jeeps and a motorbike.
Sources said the Punjab police escorted them at the tribal area border but their information was not signalled to the Border Military Police as it is done during the routine movement of foreigners crossing the area for Balochistan. Ironically, neither the BMP nor the provincial law enforcers keep record of these ‘suspicious’ foreigners.
Sources alleged that on their return on the evening of Sept 17, the eight foreigners were again escorted by the Punjab police as they set foot on the settled area land. They stayed for thee days in the cemetery having five graves — two of infants Walter, son of Mr & Mrs W.C. Oram (born Aug 12, 1910 and died Aug 17 the same year), and James Fedreick, son of Captain and Mrs J.W.C Hutchinson. The child was born on Sept 23, 1897 and died on April 26, 1898. It was the first gave at the cemetery.
Also lay buried were Horace Alleby Smith, a medical officer, and N.H. Smith, who drowned in the Dames lake at Fort Munro on Aug 2, 1900 at the age of 30. The last grave was of Maud Evelyn, the wife of Captain Ferrar. She died on Oct 13, 1906 (inadvertently published as 1886 in the preceding story on Aug 20) at the age of 26 while giving birth to a baby boy at Khar.
That child went on to become a member of the House of Commons of Britain as sources told Dawn that at least 20 years ago, a letter was received by the tribal area political administration from the official who claimed that her mother had died during his birth at Khar. He had requested the administration to take special care of the grave of her mother Maud Evelyn.
The foreigners, sources said, broke the marble slabs of the grave of the young lady with the connivance of the employees of civil works who had been deployed there by the DCO and the PA house.
“Now there are no remains of the coffin,” a BMP official told Dawn on the request of anonymity.
It is pertinent to mention that there are three cemeteries in Dera Ghazi Khan — one at Fort Munro tribal area and the other two in the settled area.
The district police officer denied the report of arrival and stay of any foreigner in the area during the aforementioned days. Meanwhile, the BMP commandant has suspended from service the whole staff of the Fort Munro police station of BMP.
The DCO told newsmen that the administration had no record of their identity.
He claimed that the staff of all check posts (BMP, Rangers, Punjab police and Punjab highway police) which works from Fort Munro to Dera Ghazi Khan has been suspended.
He confirmed that there had been a ban on stay of any foreigner in the district since 2001. (end)
Hi - new member here. My great-grandfather was in the British army in India from 1879 to about 1896. He married there and had a family. While he was stationed in Nowshera, his wife and infant daughter died. Here are the details:
Grace Vidler (maiden name Newland) passed away 12 Mar 1894. Cause of death: "Remittent fever"
Cora Beatrice Vidler, born about 12 Mar 1894, passed away 12 April 1894. Cause of death: "Inflam. Stomach - Acute" (I assume that means inflamed stomach)
I am hoping that someone can help with where they would have been buried? Would it have been a custom then to place markers - either wood or stone - on the graves? I wasn't sure how that NCO's families (I believe my gt-grandfather was a sergeant by that time)
I have just been signed up as a new member. I may have, unwittingly
contributed to the situation with the grave in Fort Munro. My nephew
is a civil service officer who took a photo of the grave on his camera
phone. He then EMailed it to me. I subsequently sent it to some people
on the rootswebindia group. Its quite possible that descendents of the
deceased person identified the grave and then arranged for the remains
to be brought back to England.

Thank y0u for your email regarding the above. I have for some time been in
touch with DrAli Jan who has been a fund of information regarding my family,
namely 2 great aunts (infants) who were buried in Pakistan. My grandfather
and grandmother were posted there in the British army, and the whole
exercise has been most informative.
Best wishes

New Email Address for Kerrie
Heads up everyone,
New Email address for me.
Just add it to your address book.
Might be nice if you "reply" with a simple
note that you have my new address for me to double check my mail lists to make

I am looking for information on St Patrick's Cathedral Cemetery, in
Karachi. I believe my grandparent's Edward and Ruth Samuel to be
buried there between 1935-1945. Any information on the Samuel family
in Karachi, would be appreciated. My great grand father was Samuel Samuel.
On another note I am also looking for information on my grand mother
Ruth her last name is said to be Hamilton but it also could be Packoum.
My brother David Payling, an infant, died im Murree 14 May 1942. His death was registered via the Army BMD system and recorded by ADMS Rawalpindi District.
What I was wondering is whether there are burial records for that period and where they are located or any other method by which I could determine where he might be buried?
Subsequent to my recent posting I have received an email (thanks Ali and Sue) which answers an earlier query confirming that my brother was buried on 15 May 1942 by W S O'Neill, the Chaplain. Unfortunately there is no record in which cemetery he was interred.
I understand that there are two cemeteries in Murree that still have to be investigated and recorded so I am hoping that one day I will have the answer.
I appreciate the opportunity offered by the list to help resolve such queries.
Hi - many apologies for the length of this story but I feel, if anyone
is going to be able to help, you might need a bit of context here!!
I am trying to research my Great Grandfather who died whilst 'serving
with the British Army in India' in the late 1890's. The family has no
real detailed information about any of this period although our family
understanding is that my Grandfather (John Frederick Perry) was born in
India in 'Rawal Pindi' and was then orphaned (It is assumed that my
Great Grandmother must have been with my Great Grandfather and also
died in the same period?) Our family have always believed that an RSM
brought the orphaned John back to Britain and brought him up as his
own. His name was 'Gomer'. No more family info has ever been known; I
am trying to piece the story together as best I can
I know that John (my grandfather) was born in 1895, went on to join the
Queens Royal West Surreys and fought with the BEF from October 1914
right through the war, suffering a lost eye and bayonet wounds to his
stomach. I have been researching his exploits for over a year and now
find myself back in India at the turn of the century!
I have researched the ecclesiastical records at the British Museum and
have discovered that there is a record for the death of an Arthur
Perry, aged 22 and a private in the Queens Royal West Surreys who died
on the 23rd June 1895 and was buried in Ferozepore. I have also
discovered a baptism record in 1900 in Rawal Pindi, for a son of a
Walter Edward Gomer (Band Sergeant) on a page with other 'Queens' -
this could be, I believe, my RSM who eventually took my Grandfather
back to London. These records seem, at least, to place everyone with
the same Regiment, in the right place at the right time! There is
however, no record of any death for a 'Mrs' Perry during this period.
Questions:
1. Is it likely that the cemetery still exists today at Ferozepore and,
if so, is there any way of obtaining any more information about this
Arthur Perry?
2. Would anyone understand why I can find no record of my Great
Grandmother?
Once again, apologies for the length of this tome, and thank you for
reading this far!
Any help would be gratefully received.
Thank you
Martin
Dear Listers, I am new to this list and am seeking information on my grandmother Mary Elizabeth HENVEY who I believe died in or near Lahore about 1900. Her (second) husband was Dr William Henvey, Official Superintendent Central Jail, Lahore (Harts Army List). By 1901 English census he was back in London - a widower. Any suggestions where Mary Elizabeth's grave might be would be gratefully appreciated.
(I've already searched BACSA publications and LDS film of Index to Bengal Deaths of that period) Regards, Mary
I am looking for a photograph of the Grave of Pam or Pamela Gillot who was
buried in 1959 in a cemetery that I believe is in Rawalpindi and probably the
cemetery is on The Mall, although this is not confirmed. The reason for this
request bis that I am the ex-son in law of the parents of Pam and they are
presently residing in England but because of their age and fragility they are
unable to conduct this search but they would be very happy to see a photograph
of their daughter's grave before they pass on. A wish for two wonderful old
people.
The BACSA publication “Rawalpindi Cemeteries & Churches” (Susan M
Farrington) confirms that Pamela was buried in Rawalpindi – in Harley Street
Cemetery (which is in the cantonment). The inscription reads:
Pam Elizabeth Gillot
Passed away 26 Jan 1960
Deeply missed by Mummy, Daddy, Diana and Peter.
I hope that this is of some help.
Regards,
Michael

Micheal, thank you again for the information which is very much appreciated. I have just spoken to my son who is with his grandparents at the moment and they are overwhelmed by the information which will undoubtedly bring many memories for them. Margaret and Doug had three children, Pam, Diana and Peter and, unhappily, Peter died shortly after they returned to England which, I'm sure, compounded the sadness for the family that had already suffered the tragedy of the death of Pam. Both Margaret and Doug are now very old and extremely fragile and it is not expected that Doug will survive for much longer and I know that this has given them an immense amount of pleasure and a few tears which could only be expected.
May I thank you again and on behalf of Margaret and Doug,
With my best regards,
Peter

Hello, I came across this site on the RootsWeb India list. Please can anybody help find my grandmother's burial site.? She died I believe in1899 or 1900 in Lahore. Hi,
I am looking for my great grandfathers grave, he died in Quetta 5th March 1909.
He went out to India with KOYLI around 1890, and got married 1893 in Poona, by
the time he died we believe he was serving in the Indian Army.
HIs service records have been lost, so info is scarce.
I would love to know where and how he died.
Grateful for any help.
Many thanks
Chris Naylor
I have been watching with great interest
your request unfolding, and thrilled to learn that you found all the details
you required, and that Margaret and Doug have the information about their
daughter Pam, and probably by this time, a photograph of her grave. This email
is just to say thank goodness for lovely folk like Ali Khan, Dr. Ali Jan and
Susan Farrington who are always ready to help people far and wide. They found
for me the deaths and gravestones of two of my great-granddaughters who both
died there in 1888 in Rawalpindi
for which I was completely overwhelmed – bless them all.

Dear Rita, I sincerely thank you for your mail and as I am sure you can imagine the initial task of finding a grave in Rawalpindi with, at the time, skant information that was probably jaded by time and memory was, I felt, quite daunting. It is without any shred of a doubt that purely because of, as you say, Ali Khan, Dr. Ali Jan, Albert Godin, Susan Farrington and others the task was made so much easier and I am overwhelmed by their personal involvement and kindness. Rita, as you quite rightly say, they are a group of very special people and on behalf of Doug and Margaret Gillot it gives me the utmost pleasure to say a heartfelt thank you.
