I cant remember the name of the narrow but there is a place in Ports and Passes that runs at 14 knots at times, I believe, twice the speed of the 33 Pearson I was on.

Jim, figure out where you want to sail and when you expect to be there. I would be happy to share, as would others in the CYC, thoughts and advice to your questions and concerns. Once you nail it down a bit more, it will be easier for us to help. Also, for a newbie, you might want to consider The Dreamspeaker Cruising Guides. Vol.4 on The San Juan Islands, and a Vol 1 on the Canadian Gulf Islands. If you plan to sail mostly in Puget Sound, there are many guides available for this area too. Finally, one must realize the importance of understanding the tides and currents when cruising this area. There are many approaches to this, but I think one of the the best is Ports and Passes published yearly by the Canadian Hydrographic department. If you do get this, make sure you read the back section as well so you know how to factor in the corrections. Currents can run 9 knts in some areas and underst anding how things work there is a matter of personal safety for skipper, crew, and your boat.
