Ghost Bikes are made from bikes and bike parts which are no longer rideable, painted all white, and installed where cyclists were killed by motorists.
They are grim but necessary reminders of the hazards cyclists face on our roadways.
They remember the victim and raise awareness of the need to combat reckless and aggressive driving and fix our streets to be safer for all users.

The purpose of this group is to be a virtual space to coordinate ghost bike creation, placement, and maintenance in the Chicago area.

The ghost bike project is an independent effort which bridges the various sub-communities of the Chicago bike scene. There is no office and no board of directors, just a group of concerned citizens with varying amounts of free time. The project was inspired by similar efforts in other cities worldwide. The idea is said to originate in St. Louis, with a mangled bike painted white and placed at the scene of a cyclist's death. Cities around the globe continue the tradition in their own individual way.
