Hi,

Does anyone know the geocache administrators? I'm talking
with "Erik" right now who won't post one of my virtuals because he
doesn't think there's a way to prove a person went to the cache or
not. I have my typical online logging system to allow people to
check their answers for the virtual cache, but I don't match up their
account names on geocaching.com with their answer on my system. Erik
won't post the cache because there's no way to prove they went to the
site or not, but isn't that the truth with all the caches on
geocaching.com, virtual or not? The only way to prove someone went
to a site is to go and check the log books at each site, which I
don't think anyone has ever done. If anyone has contacts with the
administrators, can they put some pressure on them to stop this or
come up with a better solution?

Thanks.

I wrote to Dan directly, then decided to post here as well. There are
several volunteers who do cache approvals. They may not be the last
word if you have a problem. You could try writing to Jeremy (his ID
is "irishe"), asking for specifics about why it is not approved,
and/or if he would post a poll about it, or simply post your
own "rant" on one of the discussion boards. If you do, you will have
to reveal info about the cache, since no members other than yourself
and the approvers/admins will be able to view it. Good luck, I've
enjoyed several of your virtuals already and look forward to more of
the local adventures you reveal!

Happy Trails!

Seems I have seen caches before they were approved, if you know the GC
code.....

So if I place one, and then get the GC code, let you have it, you can query
it and find it on the system.

The guidelines used for approving virtual and locationless caches
have been recently tightened. I posted what I though was a clear-cut
no problem virtual cache, only to have Erik initially deny approval.
I emailed him more specifics than I had revealed on the cache page,
and he finally approved it. On one of my locationless caches, I was
asked to add some disclaimers before it was approved. Ask Erik what
you need to do to meet the stricter guidelines, and change the cache
page to meet them. I guess you could always change it back later,
after it's approved ;)

I think it would be nice for the geocache admins if they added a keyword
feature to virtual cache postings, so their system will verify if a person
found the cache or not (where we set the keyword for each virtual cache).
It's all rather silly if you ask me. I didn't realize this was a
competition. Oh well, I'm only a hundred behind threelanes now. :) I sent
Erik my recommendations about the virtual cache system, but until then he's
denied my latest cache postings. I'll have to come up with something better
to prove somebody went to a virtual cache.

Do you think having to post a picture of yourself at a virtual cache as a
requirement to log it is too much to ask of cachers? Does everyone own a
digital camera? Just an idea.

VC's should not require a photo. I can't afford to replace my little
DC215 camera that is being held together with a giant rubber band,
and many people geocache with a $90 etrex from Frye's and nothing
more. I think that's a little too much.

Hey Candy,

If you want I will gladly give you my DC215 for parts. The battery cradle
is broken, and after it was dropped last the lens is screwy and gives
blurry photos, but there might be something on it/in it you need.

Does everyone own a digital camera? Just an idea.

I've seen several that require a photo. However, I don't think it's
fair to those who don't happen to have a digital camera.

I think a better way to meet the requirements with a minimal amount
of work keeping up with emails is to put something like this on the
page:

"Once you have the password, log your find, and email me the
password. I reserve the right to delete any found log for which I do
not receive an email with the correct password."

The person can log their find without having to wait for a response
from you. You can either check the emails against the logs, or
completely ignore them. And I think the cache approvers will be
happy.

Today I placed the first of my Texas GeoCoins in an Austin geocache.
If you are wondering what a Texas GeoCoin looks like check out
www.txgeocoins.com They were designed by someone in the Houston area
and I think they are super looking. Mine are serial numbered TX0046
thru TX0055. I have placed #47 in the Coyotee Watch geocache in
Northwest Austin. If you pick it up (or any travelbug-like
geo-traveler) please relocate it to anyother geocache and log it's
movement on the proper tracking website.

How is this about geocaching?
It is just a bunch of Ads that probably get someone paid.

Would the Admin remove this person from the Central Texas List, since there e-mail is even in  Brasil.

Or could we make it a private list by invitation/aproval only?

Chances are there are lots of lurkers that are spam finders and just watch our e-mail traffic go by and get our GOOD e-mail addresses.

Thanks!

Hey guys -

Myself and a couple friends wanted some general Geocaching
merchandise (shirts, hats, etc) but didn't want everything to say
Geocaching.Com on it. We just finished FIVE new designs which any
Geocaching fan could proudly (we hope) wear.

We are selling them on our website through CafePress and only marked
the items up $1 to help pay for their montly fee. Even if you are
not interested we hope you at least stop by and take a look at them
as we worked some long hard hours to making the designs as
professional and orginal as possible.

Those who have hit "Dan's Great Hills Cache" here in Austin... there
is a shirt which you should find amusing.

The link to the store part of our website is:

Thanks and let us know what you think!

I've placed two more TxGeoCoins. #48 is in YAPIDKA#2 and #49 is in the
Brushy Creek multi-cache. As with my first one, if you would pick
these travelers up, please move them north and/or east and help them
on their way towards Vermont.

Hi,

We picked up the XXX movie passes for Wednesday night (8/7) at 7:30pm from
Team KAMM's new cache in NW Austin, but we can't attend the show tonight.
We rehid them in a new cache in SW austin: N30 11.125/W097 52.238 called the
movie exchange cache. Please feel free to go grab them even before the
cache is listed on geocaching.com. Hopefully someone can use the passes for
tonight!

Fellow GeoCachers,

I just created a new Yahoo group for the new Garmin Rino. If you
have not heard or read about this new GPS device you are missing
out. The Garmin Rino is the first GPS device to have a GMRS/FRS
radio integrated into it. It also is the first GPS device to support
the Peer-to-Peer Positioning, this patented technology makes it
possible to transmit your location to a friend or family member.

What really separates the Rino from the rest of the FRS herd is the
ability to "beam" your exact location to another Rino user within a
two-mile range using the FRS spectrum.

Even if you don't have a Garmin Rino I think you will find this group
useful and informative.

To go to the website or subscribe to the new yahoo group use the
information below.

Website: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/garmin-rino
To Subscribe: garmin-rino-subscribe@yahoogroups.com

Thanks!

Matt

P.S. I've already got lots of links, files, pictures, calendar items,
and polls at the new Yahoo group website. It's going to be a great
group for all GPS users.

As a followup to this message, please note that using a Garmin Rino
reguires an FCC license. Operating any GMRS or GMRS/FRS radio requires a
GMRS license. In addition, Garmin is still waiting on a final ruling from
the FCC regarding this device. Currently the FCC rules governing FRS and
GMRS do not allow transmission of data, only voice, or call tones to
initiate a voice conversation. Operating the radio today, even with a
license, would be illegal with the current FCC regulations.

Hello all! I hope you won't mind if a Colorado resident posts to this
email list... ;)

I hadn't seen any September event posted yet on geocaching.com and
wondered if anyone was planning one for early in the month. The very
selfish reason I wonder is that Pumpkin Princess and I will be in
town on the 13th and 14th and wanted a way to meet up with everyone
while we were there (and get another 'find' while we were at it. :P )
We'd considered setting one up and just showing up but we'd have had
to reuse a place we'd already been too (so we'd have the coordinates)
and it seemed really weird in a self-serving sort of way to set one
up just so we could see everyone. BUT, if there were plans in the
works and we could swing by conveniently, now that's a different
story. So if anyone had one in the works, this is just a request for
that time. And if not, we'll try to see if we can't bump into you
somewhere on the trails while we're there.
Good luck and Great Caching to everyone!
Hope to see ya soon!!!

Hi eoghan,

Go to hear from you! GoHrnz and I replaced the container at Barton
Creek
Greenbelt the other day. There's still plenty of room in the log book.

As for a September gathering, I'm all for it! Perhaps a Friday
afternoon
or after work gathering at Sculpture Falls? Barton Creek is currently
flowing
nicely.

Jeremy has changed the geocaching.com site so that nobody except the
cache owners and approvers can see caches that have not been approved
yet, even if you ARE logged in.

Ham (Abraham) from Team KAMM here just letting you know that we have
placed to new caches to the Austin area. They are both unique in
their own way and are in great locations.

I also just finished renovations on our team web site and placed
some custom maps to use in your hunt. They are only one page (for
each cache) and have all the maps and info you will need to find
them. Why not print them out and take them with you instead of using
the ones on Geocaching.Com? You can find them at
http://kamm.nasser.net/maps

Well, that's it... We hope you enjoy the caches as we have put a lot
of work into them.

- Team KAMM

I'll remove that username, but that won't stop spam.
Until it gets to the point that spam becomes overwhelming, I won't
close off the group. There's so little traffic that it's easy enough
to just hit delete. Right now, the ratio of spam complaints to spam
is about 1:2, so things aren't too bad.

You are right, and most of the traffic is valid.

Still have not heard you all come up with a plan on the get together...

Since I have not been to one, I would like to make it if I am in town.

We met with Rose Farmer, Resource Management Specialist of Travis
County Transportation & Natural Resources, this week.

In July, she sent an email to geocaching.com about 3 of our caches in
Southeast Metro Park and had them archived. We removed these caches
at her request. When I discussed this with her in July on the phone,
she was only willing to allow virtual caching in the county parks.

The county has softened their position considerably since then. She
presented a draft of Travis County rules that were very reasonable.
She didn't provide a copy though they could have come right out of
Geocaching.com's web page. Some of the rules that we remember are:
1) No glass, no dangerous items,
2) No disturbing of the natural resources,
3) Permission must be obtained by the Park Manager including the
exact location,
4) No digging,
5) No caching in sensitive areas,
6) The county can visit and inspect the cache at any time,
7) No signs or marking anywhere in the park,
8) The county may remove any cache at any time to be picked up by the
owner.

I don't think any of us could argue with any of these. She said that
she will provide the list of managers for each park but for now, we
could contact her. Any caches in existing county parks should be
temporarily pulled while we obtain approval. (Windmill Run, Hamilton
Pool Preserve, Northeast and Southeast Metro that I know about.)

We spent a great deal of time discussing the Balcones Canyonland
Preserves. The County owns (or will soon)30,000 acres in addition to
the amount the City of Austin owns. Because the BCP's are endangered
habitat, we have zero chance of caching in this area. Both the
county and city must comply with federal oversight as a result of a
permit with Department Fish and Wildlife Management (or something
like that). There are large tracts of BCP that are off limits to
even hiking!

She is interested in feedback and is willing to meet with more of
us. The county recognizes that we can be a positive force in the
parks, as long as we follow the rules. They welcome any information
that we can provide about any problem areas that we might observe
while on the trails. We don't always have to trash out if we can
help identify where and when its happening so they can try to prevent
or eliminate the source of the trouble.

See you on the trails (or next gathering),
Tom and Marilyn
