When I go to that listing now, I don’t see any posts at all other than the “Publish Listing” item.   Maybe Zeppo cleared them all out?   If anyone has a copy of them I’d like to see them and report the whole thing to Groundspeak.   Was the issue that people weren’t going to be getting pathtags?

Anyhow, don’t let a bunch of idiots take any joy or comfort from you that Geocaching gives.   It’s amazing how upset and vicious people can be when they have the anonymity of a computer and internet.    Know that 99% of the Geocachers out there are like the ones that you have come to know and love.     The main thing is that you continue doing the activity that you enjoy, and that has helped you so much.     Spectrum issues are tough, and you have already started to conquer them.   Don’t let this push you back!

I think the reason Prime Reviewer allowed the cache to be published was because of the way zeppo worded it. He does not state in the description that all caches must be found in 2013, he only states that if you want the pathtag they must be found in 2013. Although I thought people would be upset about the new rules I thought they would be aimed at Groundspeak and not at me.

I have gotten threats, including daring me to show up at the Texas Challenge. I won't be going. In fact, I won't be going to any events in the near future. You might see my name on a log here and there because I'm not giving up on a sport I so love, and a sport that has changed my life beyond what any of you can imagine.

Let me tell you a story about the first tb I found. It wanted to go to a cache in La Grange. At that time back in 2010, I had occasionally geocached here and there close to my house. I decided to take that tb to La Grange. I didn't cache along the way, I didn't cache back, and that was the only cache I got in that park. You have no idea what a big deal that was for me. You see, being on the autism spectrum had made me slightly agoraphobic. I grocery shopped at 6am, and did most of the rest of my shopping on Amazon. Heck, I still do those things. God bless Walmart for being open 24 hours.

But then in Janary 2011, MCP had a milestone event and I thought if I worked real hard I could get to 100 and I did. And then I met you guys. Because we all shared this love of geocaching, I finally fit in somewhere. You guys taught me how to use my gps properly and I got one for my car and now I can go anywhere. I still don't drive at night, and there's too much activity going on around me to do too much city caching. It's more than just not liking being in traffic. I can't concentrate when things are moving so fast all around me. But I'm out there. Wanna know why I have so many cemetery caches? Because I mostly cache in the country. I got the three caches I needed in Dallas and headed for the country.

Anyway I digress. I need to take a break and decompress. I don't know if any of you saw the movie Temple Grandin, but I could really use a squeeze machine right now. But I'll be back. It's best if you guys didn't associate with me too much until after the challenge.

Toni,

I hate to see you say that you won't be attending any events for a while. Don't let this nastiness ruin your fun. Don't give the haters that power over you!

The issue was that Zeppo said all the caches had to be found in 2013 and she didn't abide by zeppos rule of the cache.  Lots of people were watching (including myself) and honoring his challenge.  Tfbrown swooped in and grabbed the FTF by using caches found in previous years.

Just frustrating when the 50+ people who were watching and playing by zeppos rules for this cache lost out in the FTF because tfbrown went by ground speak rules.

He cleaned out the log because it was getting messy and he didn't want it to be a forum of complaining.  I don't think he's trying to sweep it under the rug - just trying to get the cache back on track to be fun and challenging as intended

He also said if it gets archived then oh well

It is just a game

Subject: GSAK Macro for 2013 ABC Challenge - GC4291X
lignumaqua
Send Email Send Email

I've just posted a GSAK macro file to this forum that will check your 'Found'
database for compliance with Big Guy in Texas / Blizzard's 2013 ABC Challenge
Cache - GC4291X

The differences from last year are as I see it :

1. Anywhere in Texas - not just CTX counties

2. Addition of 'special character' caches. For the purposes of the macro I've
used the following list of special characters, if there are others that need
adding, please let me know.

`~!@#$%^&*()-_=+[]{}\|;:,<.>/?'"

(It stops checking after 5 are found as that's all that is needed)

3. WARNING There are many, many combinations of finds possible and order
matters. For example - do you count 'Final Stop #1' as an 'F' or as a '#' or as
a'1'? This macro does not check every possible order combination, life is too
short, but it does check many. It is always possible that it might miss the
'perfect' combination.

4. As written, the macro requires that finds are in 2013. If you want to change
that, please do so. That's just my personal choice. Change $FoundDate =
"2013-01-01" in line 21 to whatever date you want to use.

After it runs you will get a window showing you your progress, and there is a
copy of that in your clipboard ready to be pasted into a message, like this, I
still have 11 to find this year...

I don't have a copy of the messages, but it was pretty bad. And yes, Zeppo did
just delete them because I have my deletion notices.

Here is the issue. Groundspeak made up a rule back in March 2012 that
challenges can no longer have date parameters on them. In other words, you
can't say that all caches have to be found within a specific time frame. On the
cache page, it doesn't say that all caches have to be found in 2013, only that
you have to find them in 2013 to earn a pathtag. I took that as I read it and
logged a find this weekend. He deleted my first one, which I understood because
I hadn't finished my bookmark list. I was logging it at the site because I know
how testy cachers get when they think they're going for a FTF only to find out
someone else has already logged it. BTW, I thought the only reason people
hadn't claimed it as of yet was because they were going for the pathtag.

So I get to my hotel and finished my bookmark list and post my find again.
That's when all heck broke out. Zeppo deleted my post again stating that all
caches had to be found in 2013. Once again I posted a find explaining that I
wasn't going for the pathtag. I thought maybe zeppo didn't know about the new
rule, but it turns out he did. And since it got past Prime Reviewer that's how
he was going to run the cache. I still think it got thru PR because of how the
page was worded. I'm not going to post another find and keep this nightmare
going because I can't take it anymore. But I tend to agree with Matthew that
the cache ought to be archived. I'm not sure who this zeppo guy is or why he's
above the rules set forth by groundspeak, but I'm not crazy about him or his
many winged-monkey minions.

Oh good grief, all this crap over a FTF?   Really?   No, I mean *REALLY*?

I’ve a right mind to quit the game now if I’m going to associate with people who would get upset over this.   Thankfully, I know better because of the group of folks down here treat everyone like family.

I still would like to see the logs and know who NOT to associate with.

The issue is that Groundspeak has rules and the cache description, as written, goes by those rules. Zeppo! cannot mandate that the finds for this challenge occur in 2013 but can strongly encourage it if he wants to. And everyone who is watching the cache can choose to be upset, angry, slighted and so forth that someone logged a find with caches not from 2013. But no one has the right to threaten another cacher and be nasty about this. Disagree; be angry; be dismayed; say it wasn't right. But don't try and argue that a small faction of people, including any CO, can and should circumvent the rules we agree to by having accounts at geocaching.com. No one said this cache had to be posted there; but when it was, Zeppo! agreed to the rules established by Groundspeak.

I even offered to give up the FTF and let it go to one of the 'pathtaggers' if
that's what all the fuss was about, but they weren't happy with that either.
And no, the page doesn't say the caches have to be found in 2013 unless you want
to earn the pathtag. Read it. Don't read between the lines. READ IT.

NTX takes their FTFs seriously.

Anyways, Groundspeak has the ability to review deleted logs. I am just waiting to see if PR does anything about it. PR can be a little slow, so given a week's time, if no action has been taken, I will send my personal recommendation to Groundspeak for the archival of the cache, bypassing PR.

Toni, I remember caching with you when you were a newbie, all giddy with excitement. Do not let a bunch of backward cachers in NTX prevent you from enjoying the company of the geocachers who love you.

Anyhow, dont let a bunch of idiots take any joy or comfort from you that Geocaching gives. Its amazing how upset and vicious people can be when they have the anonymity of a computer and internet. Know that 99% of the Geocachers out there are like the ones that you have come to know and love. The main thing is that you continue doing the activity that you enjoy, and that has helped you so much. Spectrum issues are tough, and you have already started to conquer them. Dont let this push you back!

Oh my .. I guess I need to chime in and offer my two cents worth ....

The logs were deleted to hopefully move the focus from what was to what is. They were not deleted as a result of what someone did or did not post. They were deleted with the hopes that cachers will focus on the intent of the cache: to get you out there to cache!

Regardless of whether or not you agree or disagree with the challenge being published as a 2013 challenge, it was and is a challenge for 2013. The requirements are well stated - log 91 caches surrounding a set of 13 requirements. But again, all said caches need to be logged in 2013. Even if you disagree with the date stipulation, in the spirit of the challenge, abide by the cache guidelines. This is a challenge for 2013, just like the challenge for 2012, the challenge for 2011, and so on.

"barking Chihuahuas" - really? I am not sure why we, as a group, need to get into name calling. Yes I have seen it before and will probably see it again. Granted, there were a few posts on the cache page that were strong worded. Rather than post something like this, why not contact the cachers who said it directly? Just a thought. Since I am from North Texas when I see those cachers again I will make my concerns known, in person.

"winged-monkey minions" - seriously?

Yes I agree that this is a game. And that it should be fun. But posts like this and others detract from this. I am not convinced they are necessary.

This challenge is fun: 2013 Geocachers to do list. Go cache and get 91 caches in 2013. Way cool I think. For the record, I have three events left before I can log it! I have had a lot of fun trekking around town making sure I have met the requirements. I suggest yall take the time to do it too - it is a unique challenge.

The early log. The challenge is for caches logged in 2013; hence the name: a challenge for the year 2013. The cacher used logs from past years. Bottom line is the cacher did not meet the challenge requirements. If she truly wanted to log such a challenge, then log the 2012 challenge, if these caches were from 2012. This current year is still quite young with plenty of opportunity to meet the 2013 requirements. From talking with a Central Texas cacher earlier it seems that part of the issue at hand is that some centex caches with date restrictions were not approved, but this one was. It is unfortunate that not all caches are approved as we like them to be, but the fact that this one was approved should be a good thing, not a source for everyone to point and bicker. It was not sent for review with the intention of throwing sour grapes at anyone. It was sent for review with the intention of setting up a challenge cache for 2013. With this, if you feel you need to make this an issue, contact Groundspeak and complain. Get it archived if thats what needs to happen. But, if this does happen, does this make us all better? Does this action make this a better place to cache? Will it make all the CENTEX cachers happy that now there isnt a cache around Dallas with a date restriction? I dont think so. I think we should embrace the fact that we do have a cache with a unique challenge available to all of us.

Personally, I think its just time for us to behave like adults. To quite a game you enjoy, or to say off the wall things to others because they dont agree with you... well we all know it happens but it still doesn't make it right. If my words offend anyone on here I am truly sorry - this is not my intention.

Just my thoughts.

Wade

I may not be the most active Geocacher right now, but what I saw on that cache page reminded me so much of the crap I dealt with during my time on the TXGA board when it was majority NTX ran. It was disgusting. I hope that everyone noticed that when I called for its archive, the CO deleted all the logs. If I am not mistaken, a notice still gets sent to PR about it.

I say, Tony, go claim it again. Don't back down from those barking Chihuahuas. All bark and no bite. I hate to drag name calling I to this, but those were threats in those logs. Empty threats, but still. If that cache is still up in a week, I will email Groundspeak about it myself.

All in all, you definitely have a right to claim it. If you are not allowed to claim it, no one should. Its a damn game, a hobby, a sport. It isn't a reason for gang warfare. I know some of these NTX cachers follow this group, so read this carefully to those that apply. Stop making geocaching unpleasant for others! If it isn't enjoyable, then stop doing it!

Rules are created by Groundspeak for situations exactly like this.

CO’s can’t dictate their allowed cache finds on their own arbitrary rules if they go against Groundspeak rules.

Caches that don’t follow the rules should not be published, and if they are, archived.

Simple.

In the words of Joe Bob Briggs – “I’m surprised I have to explain these things”.

Toni, hold you head up high and know that you have every right to claim this one.    However, I agree that as the cache is written, it should be archived.

I don't have a copy of the messages, but it was pretty bad. And yes, Zeppo did just delete them because I have my deletion notices.

Here is the issue. Groundspeak made up a rule back in March 2012 that challenges can no longer have date parameters on them. In other words, you can't say that all caches have to be found within a specific time frame. On the cache page, it doesn't say that all caches have to be found in 2013, only that you have to find them in 2013 to earn a pathtag. I took that as I read it and logged a find this weekend. He deleted my first one, which I understood because I hadn't finished my bookmark list. I was logging it at the site because I know how testy cachers get when they think they're going for a FTF only to find out someone else has already logged it. BTW, I thought the only reason people hadn't claimed it as of yet was because they were going for the pathtag.

So I get to my hotel and finished my bookmark list and post my find again. That's when all heck broke out. Zeppo deleted my post again stating that all caches had to be found in 2013. Once again I posted a find explaining that I wasn't going for the pathtag. I thought maybe zeppo didn't know about the new rule, but it turns out he did. And since it got past Prime Reviewer that's how he was going to run the cache. I still think it got thru PR because of how the page was worded. I'm not going to post another find and keep this nightmare going because I can't take it anymore. But I tend to agree with Matthew that the cache ought to be archived. I'm not sure who this zeppo guy is or why he's above the rules set forth by groundspeak, but I'm not crazy about him or his many winged-monkey minions.

Wade,

I agree with you that the name-calling should stay out of it. We should be able to have a proper discussion without resorting to unfair and demeaning stereotypes about any group based on the actions of the vocal few.

Regarding the cache, it mostly certainly does not say the requirements have to be met in 2013 to log the cache. It says they must beachievedin 2013 to receive a pathtag:

The cache IS NOT at the posted coordinates. Solve the puzzle to obtain the correct coordinates. In order to receive a pathtag, the following Geo-list will have to be completed with all 13 requirements in the year 2013. Once all requirements have been completed, feel free to find the cache and log your smiley. Cache On!

Splitting hairs? Maybe. But this is in all likelihood why it was approved and why caches from previous years are acceptable. Does it go against the spirit of the cache? Sure, but who gets the FTF and when shouldn't detract from how any one else chooses to complete the challenge. Every cacher out there can choose how s/he reacts to this situation and can be upset and angry that tfbrown's finds technicallyfulfillthe requirements for logging a find but don't keep with the spirit of the CO's intent.

This seems like a silly situation to get up in arms about. If she logged her find second, would anyone have noticed?

Just don't lump all NTx into that pool. There are more than one of us who agree
with Toni and that rules should be followed. Unfortunately, moreso in NTx, there
are those who don't care. Why? Because there is no punishment. We all want to
park at the front door of Wal-Mart in the summer instead of walking clear across
the hot parking lot, but we don't. Just know there is more than one faction to
NTx and we all don't neccessarily agree with each other much less get along.

Wade,

I'm not asking whether the CO would have noticed; I'm asking if we would be having this public discussion if she had been anything other than FTF. And I interpret the cache name to simply mean a new cache for a new year; I don't understand why anyone thinks that the CO's intent trumps the Groundspeak rules. Why is that?

Exactly. Putting 2013 in the title and on the top line doesn't superceded
Groundspeak rules.

Anyway, I'm going to my happy place now. Why don't you turn this back into a

Sorry to hear this happened Toni. I didn't get to read the logs before they were
deleted but backhanded and/or threatening comments are always uncalled for. I've
unfortunately had people leave snarky comments directed at me but, from the
sounds of it, nothing as extreme as yours.

I'm only now familiar with the new rule but guess I would compare it to every
other complaint about "going against the COs intension/instruction/BS" ...which
I've certainly been accused of doing, lol. Nothing in the rules saying you can't
out-think a hide however COs and lurkers sure get their panties in a wad if you
do, so you should expect the same I figure.

Ultimately, if you don't want to get called out then I guess you *should* take
into account what the CO's intention is for the cache/challenge and, *probably
more importantly*, what hoops your fellow cachers are jumping through that you
are side stepping. IMHO it's really you ruining the game just as much as your
critics with their nasty comments--it takes two to tango... And forcing the
cache to be archived (either by you or your supporters) is a clear continuation
of such nastiness.

Everyone rule bends I figure (I do), but avoid the especially taboo stuff if you
don't want to be a target--I've noticed you do/did use to log your own hides
(more than once if you replaced the log), count events as FTFs, count your own
events as FTFs, sidestep CO intents, claim unfound hides (we share a FTF and we
certainly did not find it together), etc, etc... Hey, if that's the way you want
to play then whatever, but doing those things are going to open you up to more
criticism ultimately (and has!)... so clean up your game if you don't want the
criticism... or do what you do and grow thick skin like me! "It's a game"
everyone always says but thats plain BS... people take it crazy serious as you
well know. It's not "just a game" to most and if you really talk to people
everyone has a very developed code of ethics that they unrealistically expect
others to follow... or worse, expect others to follow but don't themselves!

Anyways, if you feel you are being true to yourself then don't worry about those
people. And if not, then reassess the way you are playing maybe?

I apologize for the name calling. I can honestly say that not all NTX Geocachers act this way, but those who stand and try to represent NTX the loudest give it the image I described.

My opinion is standing firm, though. There is no room for these malicious logs in the game. There is no room for COs that feel they they are the final authority on a cache, when Groundspeak makes the rules. We are not talking about anything taboo.

The issue did not start when the CO deleted the first FTF, or even the second FTF. The issue started to happen when the CO refused to acknowledge the rules they need to abide by, and people chimed in to turn it into a "We arrrrrg NTX, and we don't let people from anywhere else tell us how to cache!" scenario.

Dirk, I used to count my own caches as finds when I first started geocaching
because I didn't know any better. That FTF that we shared, we no longer do.
The CO of that cache told me to count it as an FTF because I was there first
where it was originally hidden and it was missing before even found. I did
count it at first, but then took it off. You said at an event that you didn't
care because it's just a game, but apparently you do so I'm glad I took it off.
Although I was there first, I didn't find it. CO permission or not, the FTF was
rightfully yours.

I agree with you regarding some of the comments that have been made.

However, I disagree with your interpretation of the issue.

1. Co submitted a 2013 challenge for review. It's premise is identical to similar challenges submitted for the past 4 years.
2. Challenge is approved and published.
3. A cacher logs the challenge without completing the 2013 requirements.
4. Log is deleted by co since approved requirements aren't met.

I'm not seeing how you are making the co out to be the antagonist here rather than the cacher logging the challenge without meeting the requirements. I'm not seeing how this is a NTx vs centex issue; a cacher logged the challenge without meeting requirements and the log was deleted, nothing more.

Perhaps the issue is more with this challenge being approved while similar challenges were not. Regardless, my thought is to be glad it's approved and complete the challenge rather than be envious and seek its archive.

I figured you would misinterpret my comments, Toni. I'm trying to help you. I
don't do challenges. I'm not the one with a group of people calling for my head.
I personally don't care what you do to justify your finds--thats *your* numbers
and it does not have any effect on mine. But that also doesn't mean that I have
to be mute on the matter either. You have a history of doing it "wrong" in many
people's eyes (as you admitted yourself with your last post) but everyone likes
you so most wouldn't say so. It's not an issue unless you want to make it
one--we all like you Toni. If you can't take justified and legit criticism then
thats your problem not mine. I'm just trying to help as to what might have
spurred this backlash since I find it hard to believe this all is from a single
cache. More likely this was the tipping point and not the the fuse. But what do
i know? Apparently you don't even do that stuff anymore tho do its whatever
anyways.

In response to Matt--I was under the impression that the CO was not directly
involve in the beefing since I didn't get to see the logs. I probably don't have
enough info to comment one way or the other given such but in general I agree
with Wade. He stated it better than I could.

Toni, I'm upset that people would treat you this way for something that is a simple disagreement and a differing of opinions. To contact you and make threats is absolutely unacceptable. I don't know those people, I know you, and I am not ashamed to be associated with you. I respect that you want to keep your distance but please know that I support you and will stand up for you.

Well I guess y'all got your wish and the challenge cache has been archived. I hope y'all feel some vindication with your "victory". Apparently Tori's log has been restated too even though she did not complete the challenge.

What a sad turn of events. It's sad that a group of cachers made such a big deal out of this one simply because their caches with dates restrictions were not approved. This seems to be the real issue.

As far as I am concerned Tori's log is not valid. It wasn't logged with respect to what the cache was intended or approved. From the messages I have received outside of this list there's lots I could say with respect to this, but it would serve no purpose here.

Again, congratulations in winning. Apparently its what y'all wanted. Unfortunately it's a loss for the caching community, but I don't think that is, or ever was, a concern.

Just my two cents worth.

I have tried to make some sense out of the whole thing and have tried very hard not to get involved (except one post in her defense) but I just had to vent somewhere.

After much reflection, I have come to a realization that Prime Reviewer allowed this cache to be published as a 2013 finds only cache! That must be why the cachers up there are so upset. They are not aware that down here we were not ALLOWED to do that!

I listed GC4291X - The @#$%& ABC Challenge even before zeppo! did (mine published 12/28/12, his was published 12/31/12) and was explicitly told that this was not allowed by Groundspeak.

Well, I guess this truly means that we are NOT all equal!

This is my last post in this thread for the sake of ending this debacle. Sorry, I've got a lot going on in my life right now so I'm limited on time in which I can respond.

CO started off just stating that the requirements had not been met but then went back and chimed in their own two cents about two times with everyone else. It was not as belittling as what others had been saying, but it was negative and hurtful as well.

The last post anyone made before I posted a need archive was about how there were 52ish people watching the cache and that Toni should really be careful about how she 'is antagonizing NTX and trying to force them to cache her way."

And the only opinion I will offer to this now... good. The best way to move past this in the first way is to do the fair thing, prevent further debate over it, align to what Groundspeak says, and if that means archive the cache, do so.
