For those who need a cache hidden by username starting with "Y" check out the
new cache GC3NNBZ by "you_celli?" in NW Austin.

I wanted to invite everyone to my (and Princess Bubblewopper's) first geocaching
event GC3N8WX A Midsummer Night's Event
http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GC3N8WX

It's very ambitious for our first event (haha) but it should be fun! We will be
having a series of games based on Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream and
winning these games will fill in the coordinates for a temporary cache nearby.
I hope more people can come! Please log your will attend so we have plenty of
prizes for everyone!

Perhaps so. But Urban Parks need love, too...

Bastrop is needing, I don't deny that. But so are a LOT of other parks. I find these popularity contests... well, just that. Totally subjective, and a trifle odorous. But maybe it drums up interest for supporting the Parks beyond the contest.

Just thought everyone should know of the heroics Mark Case did! He rescued a lost girl at Hanging Rock State Park while there caching on Monday 6/19/12. It's a Blessing that Mark was there at the right time! His story is amazing and it's just better to read it on his post. GC1G4PY

That's great to hear, but I hope that there truly -is- a happy ending to the story. The way that the 5-0 was all so interested in Mark, and took down all his information, is more than a little scary.

The problem is that we, as a society, are on the edge if not already at the point of being bat**** crazy over child molesters, sexual predators, etc. There really is a modern-day witch-hunt going on over this.

I hope nothing happens, but I wouldn't be surprised to hear if Mark comes under some sort of scrutiny or some sort of special attention over this. There are people with political careers to be made over this hysteria, and they are eager to manufacture anything they can. In other net forums, I've heard of people who actively avoid any interaction whatsoever with children, for fear of being accused of anything- since a mere accusation is all it takes nowadays to ruin your life.

I think that everyone on this forum would likewise have "done the right thing". But think of the circumstances- an adult male, alone in a secluded place with no witnesses, comes across a minor child. I don't know about other people, but I get enough of the "evil eye" from the soccer moms in the parks, when I get too close to a playground while caching. I've also heard of fathers who have been interrogated by the police for nothing more than taking their own kids to the park, without the mom.

I really wish that things weren't that way- I wish that it could be like the "old days" where adults could be friendly and helpful to kids without people automatically fearing the worst. But it's something that every guy, especially, has to be mindful of these days.

The Chisholm Trail District of the BSA here in Round Rock is looking for someone to teach the Geocaching merit badge on August 8 and 15.  I've done it in the past, but can't commit to it this year due to vacation conflicts.  If you'd like to know what the merit badge requirements are, see http://meritbadge.org/wiki/index.php/Geocaching .  Let me know if you'd like to teach.  I can help you prepare, and might be able to help one of the two Saturday mornings involved.  Thanks.

In Arizona real bombs are being placed in old flashlights. So... caution? It is frustrating that a waterproof matchcase likely purchased inside Walmart looks like a IED. Doesn't even look particularly taped.

A> makes sense to LABEL THE EXTERIOR "Official Geocache" and the website. At least someone with sense could have looked it up. And, yeah, maybe we need to do better police outreach.

B> retail permission is good -- but in large corporations, or even small, does the word get around? And how often is permission actually requested?

C> If an employee or other person looks at you suspiciously, TELL THEM WHAT YOU ARE DOING! Our big mystery only frightens muggles. Once they find out that, see? just paper and no money, most lose interest. The rest may start caching.

That's my 10 cents.

I have a 25 cent version that deals with sensible placement and awareness of the bigger sociological picture... but I'll spare you.

We can mock the muggles -- but they have been kicked up to a genuine hysteria by media and real events. We need to have care to not feed that. And not to get righteous when they overreact. WE ARE THE VISITORS.

This story made the USA Today newspaper this morning. It was covered in a small blurb in the "Around the Country" section...

Yeah, I remember the days (not too long ago, I guess…) when I thought as a new cacher I really had to be “stealthy” to ensure NO ONE saw what I was doing.  It was definitely fun at times, but I also remember spending way too long waiting for a muggle to leave (and fretting afterward about whether or not I was careful enough!).  Months later I loosened up.  I began to realize that many muggles aren’t even really looking, others are but really don’t care, the few who do aren’t likely to remove the cache, and in the rare case of a careful cacher causing a cache to get muggled… well, it’s an unfortunate part of being a CO.

Of course, I still do my best to watch, but if a single muggle is holding me up… guess what?  I’m going to go introduce myself.  I’m also very keen on going the extra mile if I ever feel like a muggle is “eyeing” me down from a distance and try to go meet them.  The Refer to… cache (GC2ZXZK) out in Pflugerville was a prime example of why it’s important to proactively introduce yourself if you can.  Turns out the muggle across the street was the president of the HOA.  Someone beat me to FTF by a little & he said he was about to have a fit for various reasons until I introduced myself and explained what it was all about.  He then said it was all good, but to let everyone know in my log to be careful about grass fires, wrecks, and such they’ve had problems with lately (which I did).

Anyway, enough of my rambling.  Excellent post, Tygress!  Let’s all be smart about hiding, finding, and discretion it situations where you get “caught”—especially by someone living/working in the area on a regular basis.  If they like the idea, great!  If they don’t, well, then a cache probably shouldn’t be there anyway.  ;-)

Happy Hunting!

We are enjoying the history and beauty of Kentucky. For the last four days we
have been at the Good Sam Rally in Louisville with the nightly entertainment -
Gatlin Brothers, Burt Bacharach, Sheryl Crowe, and tonight Elvis impersonators.
There have been lots of prizes given away and we have won several. Will be
pulling out tomorrow for Frankfort and the Hwy 127 cache series. Earlier on this
trip we found our 17,000th and 18,000 th cache.

Just in case someone out there in Central Texas is not aware, ACCLANMAN is AWESOME!

This gal is so talented in so many ways!  Not only can she find caches like nobody's business, she remembers where they all were!  Not only does she find hundreds in a day (like at the ET Highway), she invents a way to log them all so fast it makes smoke come out of the Groundspeak servers.  Mel shared her secret with me and saved me hours and hours of logging time.  Now I'm paying her back by embarassing her in front of all her friends.  TOO BAD!  I just can't keep my admiration to myself!

Love ya, Mel!

There is a TXGA (http://www.texasgeocaching.com/) that is separate, with a membership fee, but is more than CTXG (Central Texas Geocachers).

So why is it that this type of cache is allowed in Denmark but not in Texas?

Here is a sample GC3J296 there are several like it!

Howdy!
For some of you, the name Chris Mackey may or may not hold much meaning. He is
an artist and geocoin designer. He has come up with his newest trackable and it
is a unique idea.
You can go to GxProxy.com (Frozen Buns is his mother)to see it and to order one.
But I suggest you do it IMMEDIATELY as they are selling "like hotcakes"!
