The Chisholm Trail District (covers Round Rock ISD) of the Boy Scouts is running a merit badge fair on August 11 and 18.  They'd like to offer the geocaching merit badge.  I've taught this a couple of times, but can't commit to this due to fuzzy vacation plans at this point.  Is anybody interested in teaching Geocaching to some Boy Scouts?  if so, let me know and I'll get you in touch with the coordinators.

Dave,

I'm the Geocaching Merit Badge counselor for Troop 441, but will be out of town
on the 11th. I'll check on the 18th. What are you needing for the event?

Hey, y'all!
this is your last weekend (Thu-Fri-Sat) to catch Waterweasel on stage in Harold & Maude at the Sam Bass Theatre in Round Rock. I understand tickets are still available, but definitely purchase in advance. [VERY small theatre.]

I, Tygress, can be found on stage in Leander, in Way Off Broadway Community Players' 1890s comedrama Wild Dust. If y'all who went to mda_taz's event think my Disney outfit was a sight, you HAVE to see what I show up in for this show! Poppyfest Parade announcer said you need to see the show, "Just to see that costume again!" Fridays & Saturdays (and one Sunday -- THIS Sunday) through May 19.

If the stage spirits move ya!

Thanks!

Hi Gang,

It came to my attention recently that some folks around here don't know how to
clear the Needs Maintenance (NM) icon from their caches, so I thought I'd come
on here and address this for others who may not know about it.

Just to be clear on what I am talking about, the NM icon is that little icon
that shows up on lists and your cache page attributes that is a white cross on a
red background. It is placed there when someone posts a "Needs Maintenance" log
on your cache.

When one of these logs is posted, the attribute is added to the cache listing
and, of course, the posting is emailed to the cache owner (CO) and anyone
watching hte cache either via the watchlist or bookmark features. The email is
not sent to Groundspeak or a reviewer unless, of course, the reviewer is
watching the cache.

OK. So why does this matter? Very simply, because many folks filter out caches
that have this NM attribute. I have seen many cases where a problem has been
fixed, but the NM attribute has never been cleared so the cache will still not
be seen by those that do this. So if you want you cache to get maximum
visibility, you need to clear this attribute as soon as you address whatever
problem the cache may have.

Fortunately, clearing the attribute is VERY easy. All you, the CO, must do is
go to your cache listing and write an "Owner Maintenance" log. You do this just
like any other log. Go to the "Log you visit" link at the top of the right
sidebar, click that, and post your log. This will remove the attribute.

Just to be clear, there is no other way to clear it. Writing a note, deleting
the any NM logs, etc. will not get it done. You MUST post an OM log to clear
the attribute.

That's all there is to it.

Groundspeak offers an 'Add to Bookmark' API function - and this is already implemented in GSAK in the 'Geocaching.com access' menu. GSAK allows you to add either the current cache or the current filter to a specified bookmark list.

However, there are no functions provided to remove caches from bookmark lists. If/when it is added to the API then we'll add it to GSAK.

FYI - the Help page for all the API functions can be found here:

I manage my PQ’s with bookmark lists â€" a “Caches to find” list and a “Found” list. Whenever I make a find I have to manually add it to the found list and remove it from the caches to find list. It sure would make things easier, but as far as I saw in GSAK, they didn’t include a function like that. I didn’t know if that was because they just didn’t do it, or if Groundspeak doesn’t have that in their API.

Great Tip!!!

I'd like to offer a second way to clear it as well you can click on  "Edit Attributes" and remove the "Needs Maintenance" Icon.

Worked as long as I've been maintaining caches.

But there have been so many software upgrades.
An OM log in response to a NM log is a good thing, anyway, imho.

In my world API is American Petroleum Institute, but in GSAK world it is
Application Programming Interface. From Webopedia:

"API, an abbreviation of application program interface, is a set of routines,
protocols, and tools for building software applications. A good API makes it
easier to develop a program by providing all the building blocks. A programmer
then puts the blocks together.

Most operating environments, such as MS-Windows, provide an API so that
programmers can write applications consistent with the operating environment.
Although APIs are designed for programmers, they are ultimately good for users
because they guarantee that all programs using a common API will have similar
interfaces. This makes it easier for users to learn new programs."

Basically, the benefit of an API is that you don’t have to rely on “screen scraping” your data from a Groundspeak web page (something they really don’t like you doing).  The API talks directly to their system when performing a function, rather than sort of remote-controlling a web browser to do so.    The widespread use of the API probably won’t be seen, however, as they charge software developers a fee to have the privilege of using the API in their applications.   Many other sites (Google, for one) publishes their API to the world for free.  Groundspeak charges for their API because they also sell an application that uses it, and most likely, a better version of it as well.   I’ve always been in the camp of Groundspeak should be giving their app away for free to Premium members, or at least offering a discount, but I suppose they like to see the revenue coming in.

Ok, I’m off my soapbox now….  ☺

In my world API is American Petroleum Institute, but in GSAK world it is Application Programming Interface. From Webopedia:

"API, an abbreviation of application program interface, is a set of routines, protocols, and tools for building software applications. A good API makes it easier to develop a program by providing all the building blocks. A programmer then puts the blocks together.

Most operating environments, such as MS-Windows, provide an API so that programmers can write applications consistent with the operating environment. Although APIs are designed for programmers, they are ultimately good for users because they guarantee that all programs using a common API will have similar interfaces. This makes it easier for users to learn new programs."

Sorry for the off-topic message, but am posting out of desperation. My office is
in immediate need of an secretarial/administrative type person. We are a small
land surveying company- much of what we need are basic tasks like answering the
phone, invoicing and filing, However, there are office tasks which are specific
to our type of work such as accessing maps and other materials for our field
crew. There is a lot of variety in each day. Right now we envision half or 3/4
time, but the job most likely could be full time for someone pretty quickly.
This position could even transition eventually into other areas of land
surveying within the office. It is how I got my start as an RPLS!

If anyone knows of someone looking for this type of work, please email me
outside of the message board.

I may not post very often, but I enjoy reading about everyone's milestones and
experiences!

Thanks!

Have a GREAT time!
We enjoyed Anchorage (and its caches!)
Hopefully you'll be there long enough to catch the tide turning in the Turnagain Arm -- and that it will actually give you a tidal bore. Just watching it come in is cool enough -- that puppy moves! (it's an earthcache -- one of several up the arm)

The Native Cultural Center there is very nice, too. Where else would you hear a conversation re: "Had the kids help dry salmon skins last weekend."

However, Anchorage is the farthest north we managed, so the only spot on your coords we can bubble about.
