We've not passed on our congrats for Jerose! We've had several
occasions to cache with Jerry and Rosemary and we think they're a
great addition to the Central Texas geocaching family! (No, they
didn't have to find 500 to get this inclusion LOL!) We're excited
about their enthusiasm for this great activity!

Way to go, Jerose!

Hi all

I have an opportunity to apply for a grant of anything up to $10,000
to fund a community project. There is a VERY loose remit about what
kind of projects qualify. It has to be new and it has to provide
some kind of service to the community and or kids in that community
that is not already being met. So no taking something old and revamping it.

One of the examples of a project from last year was setting up an
orienteering course, training local schoolkids and organising a
competition between schools at the end.

It struck me that I can substitute geocaching for orienteering and do
something to help local schools teach the kids about GPSRs,
coordinate systems and navigation.

Ten grand could buy a whole load of yellow etrexes.

On the down side, would it run the risk of letting the "bad kids"
know what we do and risk wholesale muggling of local caches?

I need thoughts and ideas please.

Well, since the GPSrs would be in the control of the schools, I really don't see much of a problem.  Heck, we could organize a "Georgetown School Geocaching Challenge".  I think it is a pretty good idea.

Hey Alex,

I think anytime you get a kid out of the classroom and into the outdoors it's a great idea!  I like to take kids out geocaching and they always seem to have a great time.  So many kids today are so busy being carted around from school to sports to music to (fill in the blank), etc., that the great outdoors has been left behind.

Again, great idea, and let me know if I can help you at all.

Hi Alex -

You know, the Girl Scouts are looking for about 24 GPS units so that they can be checked out by troops for geocaching activities.  Perhaps you could purchase the units and create a clinic to teach geocaching to Council staff, or maybe leaders, how to use the units, then they could work with the girls?  You know, a "train the trainer" kind of thing?  You could probably even do it at the Georgetown Scout House.  If there is one thing any GS worth her salt WON'T do, it's muggle a geocache, should she recognize it for what it is.  I'm going to introduce my Brownies to geocaching next weekend with a nature hike that ends at "Bedrock" in Old Settlers. It's a shame I only have one GPS unit - they'll be fighting over who gets to carry it.

Well,

After studying the history of the area, looking at current maps and an old land plot map from 1897 I believe it is pretty close to:

98°14'7.38"W   29°54'38.78"N

I am by no means an expert here but this was an intriguing question so I had to look it up.  If you are looking for buried treasure it probably won’t help any but as a bit of trivia, it will probably work.

I would have liked to get my hands on this book which might be able to pinpoint the location even better.

Hey group, I have fielded a question I am currently unable to answer so
I thought we would ask the experts out there for a bit of help.

When Canyon Lake was first created, there was a town named Hancock that
was submerged when Canyon Dam was finished. I have looked at some of
the history of the lake area but can only find the name of the town,
but not where under the lake it might be.

Can anyone give us the coordinates of the city of Hancock, Tx which is
buried under Canyon Lake, or give us information as to how we might
find the data?

Thanks

Girls Scouts, Boy Scouts, school kids.....  they are all as eligible as anyone from what I understand.  There seems to no limitation that all the money has to be spent on equipment either.  Training can certainly be part of the package.

I'm trying to find out at the moment what geographical area I have available to shoot at.  Certainly I know I can not do anything in Austin, they have their own 10 grand that they can apply for.

We need to talk !!!!

There have been several discussions on the main Geocaching forums on
geocaching in education, and there are several people there who could
guide you on setting up a curriculum. Tom, in Iowa, is one of them.
(I can't remember his full user name... sorry.)

There have been complaints that when teachers have used "real"
geocaches to teach the students, many of those have been vandalized
or muggled later. The best ideas seem to use the idea of introducing
geocaching using caches placed just for that purpose, without giving
the students coordinates of local caches. Of course, there will
always be people (young or old) who think it is cool to take
something that isn't theirs. I remember Snoogans posting about a
former "friend" (who was also a teacher, I believe?) that, when told
about geocaching, thought it would be fun to take the geocache, and
then watch all the posts from the people who couldn't find it!

You get immature thoughts and reactions from all age groups,
unfortunately.

Georgetown Parks and Recreation is also aware of geocaching... we
helped teach a course (through TPWD Outdoor Family program) here in
Georgetown last fall. They might have further suggestions or
requests, also. They also have a great Outdoor Camp/Activity for
older teens for the summer, with fun trips. They've gone rock-
climbing, canoeing, camping, and I don't know what all. Much more
than the typical summer camp!

Alex, checkout http://www.educaching.com/

It may have information you could use. They even give ideas on grant
writing! Also, check out the geocaching in Education forum. There
is a lot of information there. Iowa Tom is one you could contact for
more ideas and information, also.

I'll take his car away if he gets close (or maybe his gas card).  Oh wait, he found most of those caches before he had a car.

OK, I'll take his GPS away.  Uh, that won't stop him either.  He found a good number of those with no GPS.

I guess I'll just have to keep running around with him and grabbing caches as fast as he does!  Great fun - can't wait for the next 5000 caches!

That's my boy!

Thanks melanie, no we arent looking for any kind of treasure, we have a friend with a personal hovercraft and has installed side scan sonar on the unit and wants to test it out to see if it will image the remains of buildings etc on the bottom of the lake. He just needed some kind of starting point to go by so we will give him this information and see where it goes from there.

We will need to convert the waypoints to the Garmin hours.mm.mm format but that shouldnt be any kind of a problem. Thanks very much for your research on our behalf it is very much appreciated.

Well,

After studying the history of the area, looking at current maps and an old land plot map from 1897 I believe it is pretty close to:

98°14'7.38"W   29°54'38.78"N

I am by no means an expert here but this was an intriguing question so I had to look it up.  If you are looking for buried treasure it probably wonąt help any but as a bit of trivia, it will probably work.

Thanks
Paparazzi Pete

Using Expert GPS we plotted the waypoint and then looked at both the satelite and topo views and the spot appears to be in about the right place as Wanakenagirl remembered it. She said it was near the Canyon Lake Marina, and sure enough, that waypoint puts it due north of the Marina.

I have attached the Expert GPS view of the plotted waypoint.

Thanks again for your help

Thanks everyone for the congratulations. I've cached with many of you at one time or another on my way there. It has been a blast and I look forward to the next 1000.

If you'll are planning to come out to Pedernales Falls State Park for our event make sure and look at the area before you leave (or run a new query) there are some caches that are waiting to publish.

Thanks again to everyone. Central Texas Cachers are the greatest and I'm proud to be a part of such a great group.
