As Warren said, Haven't heard about the ruder getting too hot in the water due to having black paint. However, I do know the answer to your second question.

My knotmeter transducer became erratic sometimes, so I simply replaced the wheel and sending unit, kept the ST50 indicator at helm station. Cost about $125

The 18x15 is available at a good price. Frankly I've never run it a full throttle to check RPM.

New boat to us, and previous owner did not have the knotmeter installed in hull fitting, just the plug was installed. Boat is still on the hard, and bottom of
