There's a video on youtube—I'll let you look it up yourselves if you're so inclined—called The Man Cold.

I've shown it to several of my female acquaintances and they all agree: that's their man!

I'd like to inform you all that Mr. Ashbury is quite different from that video.  Yes, I'd really like to tell you that. But unfortunately, I can't.

Like most men, he regresses when he's not feeling well. Unlike most men, he doesn't do a lot of complaining. The reason is simple. It's his desire to be noble in death.

Yes, Mr. Ashbury convinced himself long ago, before we got married actually, that he was going to die a young man. Hence, every time he's a bit sick, or thinks he needs to see the doctor, in his mind it is the beginning of the end.

Now that didn't come across with sufficient gravity.  Let me try again. It Is The Beginning Of The End. Yes, he still believes he's going to die young, even though I, (not indelicately you understand) pointed out that he wasn't exactly young any longer.

His propensity for being convinced that his demise is imminent is known by every member of the family, and has become kind of like an inside joke.

You would think with this kind of thinking that Mr. Ashbury would be the first to line up for a flu shot each year, but alas, he only had it once, and then it was by ambush (he went with me when I got mine last year; our doctor is a force to be reckoned with).

I must report to you, as of writing this Tuesday evening, that Mr. Ashbury has a cold – poor little bunny. He took the day off work Tuesday, a fairly rare occurrence for him. This is a sign to me that he has a Bad Cold, and that indeed it could be The Beginning Of The End.

He has no fever. He is not coughing. He is not sneezing. He is not particularly achy, and while he claims he has been a bit sweaty, he hasn't had the chills. Nor has he been lying around the house moaning—at least, not overly much.

He does, however, have a sore throat, and his sinuses have been bothering him.

I wasn't to make a dinner that night, he informed me the morning.  Chicken soup was to be his menu of the day. So far, he has had two doses.

I also prepared my usual winter night time beverage of hot lemon. Very simple: cut a lemon into a pot, add water, simmer several hours. Then re-heat in the evening, pour some into a cup and add honey (for me just a touch of honey, and artificial sweetener).

He said that yes, he would take the hot lemon. This is yet another sign of how serious this cold is. He hates  hot lemon.

By the way, just like that video on youtube, I have a cold too. Only I didn't give mine to Mr. Ashbury – poor little bunny. He actually gave his to me.

He slept all morning yesterday, after getting up and having a cup of coffee. Then, around noon, he got up to lay in his recliner and rest. I gave him some chicken broth, which was what I was having too.

And since I didn't have to worry about going out anywhere, such as to drive for an hour and a half fetching Mr. Ashbury from work, I thought I would fight my cold with an afternoon nap.

He woke me when he came back to bed about an hour and a half later to tell me he was coming back to bed. And no, he really didn't feel that much better.

I have my fingers crossed that as you read these words, Mr. Ashbury will have returned to work—poor little bunny.

I figure that's the only way I'm going to be able to get some rest myself.

I wish all my American friends a warm and wonderful Thanksgiving…and a happy birthday to Wednesday's Words. It's three years old – and no one is more amazed about that than I am!

Love,

Morgan

Celia, I don’t think it’s the “shifts” that concern not just RWA, but many author’s organizations have come out in dismay.  It’s the lack of ‘truth in advertising’ that is the real problem.

And frankly, there is nothing wrong with self-publishing ¯ IF someone understands the realities of it.  No subsidy publisher gives the potential CUSTOMER the truth about what they are buying. They spin glossy tales or hold your book now instead of waiting years, or “available for sale in every brick bookstore across the nation”.

These are myths they offer – a chimera to lure the dreamer into paying them thousands of books, for which, basically family and friends will be the customers.  There is no distribution.  Yes, they are “available” for bookstores to order.  Will they?  No.  Bookstores will not order non-returnable books in most cases.  The handful that do often charge $5-25 surcharge and prepayment to order them.   You can sell if you get book signings.  True.  Again – IF the bookstore will order them.  In most cases IF they will permit the signing, they will make you pay for the 50-100 copies upfront.  All sales will be your

pushing.

Basically, few authors ever sell more than 100 copies of these books.  Do they tell you this?  I recall one lady with PA who asked how long would it take her to earn $20,000?  Hallo...like never?

In Harlequins case – the phrasing of their package hints that if you do well, that they will pick you up for Harlequin regular lines.  Could happen.  But very doubtful.

If a person truly knows the facts about self-publishing and elects to go this route (they would be better off with Publish America who DOES pay all cost of production), then it’s their choice.  I wish them well.  Bridges of Madison County was one of these self pub books.  But it cost the guy several years of living in his car, peddling to bookstores that took pity on him and allowed him to leave the copies in the stores for commission sales.  I doubt most people will want to go that route.

Harlequin is selling them a dream on the Goodship Lolly Pop.  Truth in advertising is the problem, not if a person chooses to go this route.

Deborah

Hi Donna,

I just read your statement posted on Cataromances so now it's a bit clearer to me.

The publishing industry is changing, especially with the advent of eBooks and the opportunities that self or vanity publishing offers. Perhaps writers' associations need to be a bit flexible to accomodate these shifts. In any case, it's hard for me to imagine HQN not a part of RWA. Hope they reconsider. I'm a Harlequin fan. Just my two cents.

Deborah – I can’t make any particular comment about this except one clarification.

Harlequin did not buy out Author’s House.

They entered into an agreement with Author Solutions to form a new venture.

Harlequin just bought out Author's House, a vanity press and have
put out they will now begin publishing Romance books if you pay
them $600-1000 per book under the line of Harlequin Horizons. They
will offer "editor's recommendations" which is NOT editing, but a
couple pages overview of how the book might be improved.

RWA maintains that any press on their "accepted list" must not have
the author contributing money in any fashion. They have two tiers
of "accepted publishers" ¯ small press that pay royalties that do
not offer advances, and larger presses that offer $1000 or more
advances.

Harlequin just went into the Vanity Press business - meaning
authors are going to pay THEM money to get into print, so that
makes RWA take steps to remove them from the "accepted list"

I feel for the authors caught in the middle of this.

I am concerned all slush pile will go there. What better way to cut down on
slush pile expenses, and have slush pile actually paying money. Instead of an
author sitting there for a year (or 2 or 3 with Harlequin!) they give you
immediately - you can wait 2-3 years for a rejection OR―- you can pay $600 and
be an author in three months...so that authors who could be getting paid,
suddenly are jumping at the "immediate" and paying them instead.

Quick fix...what happens when the public won't touch the books because after
four or five of these no edited books they are scared to spent their money.
What happens when they begin to not trust Harlequin across the board?

Harlequin don't really need the RWA. The vanity/subsidy press looks like
something that was forced on them by the bosses at Torstar. Harlequin is the
only profitable part of Torstar. Torstar lost over 200 million dollars in their
newspaper and tv section last year. This partnership is going to drag
Harlequin's reputation through the mud.

I have no problem with self-publishing - open, honest and straight forward self
publishing. This is not. This is a vanity/subsidy press which has a lot of
misleading, confusing and inaccurate information on their website. I find it
unethical that they have adverts to this new press all over their website and
they will be directing the slush pile to it.

The RWA has a position and I'm glad to see they stuck to their position even
though it is probably going to hurt them. I'm an old cynic though so I expect
Harlequin will be back in the RWA fold sooner or later (with the RWA doing all
the leg work).

To get the shot, or not to get the shot: that is the question.

The Canadian government is providing to all who want it, free of charge, the vaccine for the H1N1 flu. I believe that it's being made available to my neighbors in the United States as well.

In my area, the County Health Unit is administering the vaccine; with it being offered first to those deemed `priority cases'—that is to say those groups of people already identified as being at the highest risk to develop complications from this flu.

This group includes pregnant women, children from six months to five years of age, adults under the age of 65 with underlying medical conditions, and health care workers.

I'm in that third group – under 65 with underlying medical conditions.

My daughter, like a lot of people, is skeptical of this flu shot. Her feeling is that it was developed too quickly and not tested thoroughly enough.

From my understanding the flu vaccine used each year is different than the one from the year before; and actually, the medical-research establishment makes their best guess as to which strain of flu will be prevalent and manufacture the year's vaccine based on that guess.

I've heard some rather strange comments about this particular `flu shot'. The strangest one, espoused by a woman of my daughter's acquaintance, is that this vaccination is in fact the government's secret master plan of execution – to get rid of the poor people.

On a daily basis, I deal with a lot of people. I never fully appreciate how intelligent most of my friends and associates are until I hear opinions like that.

There are some legitimate questions to ask about this `pandemic'. If you're cynical, you might be of the opinion that the media of the world, frustrated when the supposedly imminent bird flu pandemic didn't materialize a couple years back, jumped on the early reports of the swine flu (oh, sorry, politically correct this to use the term H1N1), making a mountain out of a molehill, as it were.

Some researchers claim this new strain of influenza doesn't kill any more people than any other influenza has done in recent years. And yet we hear cases of previously perfectly healthy people being stricken, and dying, seemingly almost overnight from this flu—in our area a thirteen year old hockey player being the most notable. I cannot in all honesty recall a similar kind of instance in recent years with `normal' flu strains.

There are others than my daughter who are suspicious of the speed with which this vaccine was developed. To me it seems as if there is a veil of fear – fear of government, fear of foreigners, fear of practically every darn thing – that has invaded human society of late. Thus, the `opinion' I cited above  about the government killing off the poor isn't the only one out there that thinking, rational people are repeating. I really miss common sense.

Because of the Internet, people are communicating more than ever and learning more than ever all the time. Conversely, it has never been easier for baseless rumour and innuendo to spread as any idiot can, and does, have a web site supporting the most preposterous of claims.

One only has to look back to the history of the last century to understand what can happen if measures aren't taken against this new strain of flu. In the years 1918-1919, the influenza pandemic killed between 20 and 40 million people worldwide.

The astute among you will scoff and say, well yes, but Morgan, that was before the days of modern medical science and flu shots.

And I ask, what difference does modern medicine make, if people refuse to be immunized?

To get the shot or not get the shot: it's a decision everyone needs to make. I hope you choose as I have done, and get it.

Love,

Morgan

Monk season 1 was hilarious. His quirks weren't just for the sake of
it. They were comedic relief, sometimes they helped him stumble upon
the answer to a case, and they showed a vulnerability to the
character. As seasons progressed, the show has downplayed his quirks.
I always laughed at his trademark quirk of touching lamp shades.

Psych is one of my favorite shows. Both Gus and Shawn, the lead
characters, are very quirky. But it's part of their friendship. They
play off of each other and I think the dynamic makes the show
enjoyable. However, I will admit that sometimes Shawn is quirky just
for the sake of quirkiness, and that is irritating. Kind of like jokes
that are drawn out too long.

I think moderation is key. If the quirks seem to be thrown into the
story just for the sake of it, that turns me off to a story.

Did anyone see Music & Lyrics with Drew Barrymore and Hugh Grant? I
liked that movie, but Drew's character had several quirks that turned
me off a bit because they weren't explained, and (in my opinion)
seemed thrown in just so the character could be described as "quirky."

Quirky character are what MAKE the series or the movie.  Even so-called 'normal' series have small quirks if you were paying attention.  Mike Logan in Law & Order always wore plaid ties showing off his Scottish heritage, but then had an American flag on his lapel. (Double quirk and insider joke when you realized Chris Noth was Vietnam protestor that burned American Flags in his youth).

Dexter is quirks all the say...lol

Without quirks, tics and flaws...then the whole process would be very boring.......

The answer is always in the voice. If the author doesn't have a voice that compliments quirky characters, it won't ever matter how good the plot might be or how well the author writes. The book will always have an awkwardness to it that an intuitive reader will feel.

Any other the characters on Big Bang Theory. All quirky, all lovable in their own ways and when they reach out to a friend in need that tests those quirks, it makes it all worthwhile.

I love quirky characters - within reason. Give them one quirk, make the character "own" it and it can work.
