826 Seattle Announces the 2010 WRITE LIKE I DO Adult Writing Workshop Series!
Hello David,
For the past two years, 826 Seattle has hosted WRITE LIKE I DO, a series of writing workshops for adults. Many notable authors have shared their wit and wisdom; screenwriter Stewart Stern (Rebel without a Cause), comic illustrator Ellen Forney (I Love Led Zeppelin), funny men John Moe (Conservatize Me) and Ryan Boudinot (The Littlest Hitler), musician John Roderick (of The Long Winters), and librarian extraordinaire Nancy Pearl (Book Lust) have all contributed.
We are pleased to announce a whole new year of insight, instruction, and inspiration!
Come spend two hours with local (and not so local) literary nonpareil who will share tips on writing like they do. At no extra cost, you'll have an opportunity to practice your skills and maybe even rub elbows with the next Faulkner-in-Training. Regardless of your forte or
favorite genre, whether you're an aspiring writer or seasoned professional, you'll find these workshops worthwhile.
Buy a season pass for the full experience or single tickets for the classes you find most compelling. And know that all proceeds for these workshops go to support the work of 826 Seattle, which is teaching young people in our city the art (and skills) of writing. Individual workshops are $30 and a season pass is $210 (more than a 20 percent discount).
A full schedule can be found below:
For fans of — HISTORICAL FICTION —
Tuesday, January 26, 2010 — 7PM HOW TO WRITE LIKE YOU DREAM ABOUT HISTORY AT NIGHT (AND MAYBE YOU DO) with Elizabeth Kostova
To buy tickets, direct your web browser to Brown Paper Tickets at www.brownpapertickets.com or visit the Greenwood Space Travel Supply Co. at 8414 Greenwood Ave N. More information can be found at www.826seattle.org/writelikeido or by calling 206-725-2625.
All workshops take place at 826 Seattle, located at 8414 Greenwood Ave N, in Seattle's Greenwood neighborhood. Doors open at 6:30pm. All workshops start at 7pm and last approximately two hours. Coffee, water, writing implements, and paper will be provided.
All proceeds benefit 826 Seattle, a
writing and tutoring center for students, ages six to eighteen. All of our programs—including after-school tutoring, in-school assistance for teachers, writing workshops, and story-telling field trip experiences—are offered free of charge and are supported, in part, by events such as the Write Like I Do workshop series. For more information, visit www.826seattle.org.
The Write Like I Do workshops are geared towards and are appropriate for adults. Aspiring writers under eighteen years old are advised to check out the 826 Seattle writing workshops for students.
It's
the end of the year as we know it, but does that mean Cartoonists Northwest
will be doing something "sketchy" for the final meeting of 2009?
Well, yes and no!How 'bout something
completely different? How 'bout the chance to create your own Christmas
ornament or holiday gift out of glass?
Yes,
that's right: finally a new way to channel some of that "hot air" we
all exhale in great big puffy clouds! We'll be meeting for our December gala at
Blowing Sands Glass Studio. Everyone is invited to blow their own pumpkin
(approx. 4" diameter), float (approx. 6"-8" diameter), or
ornament (approx. 4" diameter) for $20 per piece (they're giving us a $5
break off their regular rate). No experience is necessary (literally a 3 year
old has done it). We will need to know by Thursday, December 17th how many
folks will want to participate, because the studio hosts need to know how many
blowers they'll need. E-mail us your name and how many folks you'll have
participating.
And
that's not all! We'll run through a brief agenda, and then plow (nyuk!) right
into the festivities. We'll share snacks and drinks (please feel free to
contribute by bringing food to share with the group). This year, the Holiday
Spirit means we can enjoy holiday spirits! Yes, we can have alcoholic beverages
this time around, as long as we drink responsibly (this is a glass studio,
after all). CNW will provide non-alcoholic drinks and utensils. Finally, we'll
play some games, including the time-honored "White Elephink"
gift-exchange game! We'll explain the rules at the meeting, but for now, if
you'd like to play, plan to bring a wrapped, unlabeled gift to the meeting to
contribute to the gift pile. Gifts should be inexpensive, humorous items. Bring
a smile to someone's face (I know: cartoonists are a "tough crowd"
too, eh?)! Come and send 2009 on its way at CNW's Super Glass Blast!

Dear CNW members, family, and friends! It's with great pleasure that we announce the results of the vote for the Presidency of Cartoonists Northwest. The election took place on Sat. Nov. 21 at the regular monthly meeting....and MARYBETH BARR won unanimously! Marybeth brings fresh energy and enthusiasm to the CNW ship of state, and all CNW members (and prospective members) can no doubt look forward to an exciting new year of CNW happenings under her leadership. Outgoing President Keith Curtis presented a heartfelt...and hilarious...farewell speech that recapped the eventful years he spent as a CNW officer. After the vote the group celebrated by watching a short flick about Will Eisner, and the history-making animated film "Gertie the Dinosaur" (1914, Winsor McCay), followed by food and drink at the Hurricane Cafe.
Marybeth has begun assembling her new cabinet of officers. New Secretary Nat Cook will replace outgoing Secretary Jeff Hawley. Other outgoing officers have volunteered to continue their duties in the interim. So, this message is also a CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS! Outgoing V.P. Stephen Prescott and Treasurer Jeff Hamill will train and assist whoever steps up to those respective plates. Please consider volunteering for these positions. CNW Needs YOU! If you're interested, please contact Marybeth to discuss, at mkbarr6611@...
If anybody wishes to advise or otherwise help Kathy with her project (see below), please contact her directly at the email or phone number shown. Thanks

Wonder if someone in CNW can help me. Am putting together a
slide show of my walk from Boston to New York – to celebrate my 70th.
Have all the pictures and captions in tact and am happy with the
result. But the music is giving me fits and starts. Starts, indeed, as
music doesn’t start – or for that matter even appear -- when it should!
Have deleted music and put it back in several times to only more
frustration as there seems to be no pattern as to when certain songs
decide to opt out. Some songs I’m using: On the Road Again, 500 Miles,
New York New York, Riding on the MTA, Happy Wanderer. Fun music, but
some so uncooperative. > > Slide show created under

NORTHWEST FILM FORUM PRESENTS
Stephanie Maxwell Visual Music
November 23 at 8pm Artist attendance!
Stephanie Maxwell
specializes in hand-painted experimental abstract animation. After
performing a variety of painting, marking and engraving techniques
directly onto 35mm film stock, Maxwell re-photographs each frame of the
film using a digital feed camera and digital frame capture, sometimes
employing additional manipulations such as bending and twisting the
film, layering film frames together, and progressive alterations of the
image during the frame by frame re-photography.
This screening will feature selections from Maxwell's work from 1984
through her two newest works from 2008, as well as a twelve-minute
short documentary about Maxwell's filmmaking process, with footage of
the artist at work.
Take a class with Stephanie Maxwell Direct on Film Workshop Sunday, Nov 22, 12-4pm
Instructor: Stephanie Maxwell
Tuition: $20/WigglyWorld members, $25/general
Max Attendance: 8 Direct Animation is a unique filmmaking technique in which images,
textures and patterns are hand-inscribed on the motion picture film
itself, using paint, markers, etching tools, collage materials and
other media. Maxwell discusses and demonstrates basic techniques of
direct animation and elementary principles of the frame-by-frame
process of animated filmmaking. Both 16mm and 35mm film stocks are made
available to workshop participants for experimentation. In addition,
cameras are provided for re-photographing handmade films to allow
artists to digitally manipulate original imagery. During the workshop
excerpts from well-known historical and contemporary works are viewed.
Information about Stephanie Maxwell and excerpts from her works are
available at http://people.rit.edu/sampph/

Tickets will go fast for this event, so buy now! Berkeley Breathed ("Bloom County", "Opus") used to live on Vashon Island, and when he returns to Vashon for this book reading, it is certain to be a sellout. November and cast your on-the-spot vote for the office of President of Cartoonists Northwest!Â
Exercise your franchise! Hear a
stirring speech from outgoing President Keith

Obama, FDR, and Dr. Bronner simultaneously.Â
Gaze with awe and respect at the NEW
President, whoever she or he turns out to be!Â
By the by, you may wonder who the candidates are. Well, the answer is simple…the candidates are
anybody and everybody who wants to run!Â
And running could not be simpler.Â
Just stand up and throw your hat in the ring. CNW has always been led by volunteers, and you
can help keep up the tradition. Take a
turn at the CNW helm! Don’t be scared,
it’s not the Titanic. And remember, the
campaign, voting, and inauguration all happens in this one meeting, so it’s
painless no matter what the outcome. Be

Â
But wait, the fun of the November meeting doesn’t stop with the election. Other surprises lay in wait. Bring a favorite cartoon DVD and if we have
time, we’ll watch cartoons on the big screen.Â
Will we have reports from the hinterlands (i.e., The Writers Block
Group)? The hoopla never ends at CNW
meetings! See you there!

Our usual Penstuff folding party is this Thursday November 12th at 5:30pm at BurgerMaster in University Village. We always need the help, so we hope you can make it.
We chat and share and discuss topics that help with CNW, so everyone's input is always appreciated. All while folding and labeling and stickering our monthly newsletter. it can be fun. And Dick help a lot, too, by printing and folding Pensuff for us as well.
Hope to see you all there, and besides, the food is good. YUM!
This is the time of year when we should be starting to think about when to have the Toonies (Thanks for the reminder, Dick!). I believe we usually have them during April., Maybe the 2nd weekend or 4th weekend?
Before we select a date, does anyone know of any cartoon conventions or shows that may be a conflict for us during April or May? Please check on that, if you would. I would really appreciate if folks would get back to me.

Draw, Dabble, Doodle at the 10th Annual Drawing Jam
Artists of all ages and abilities are welcome at this 12-hour art-making festival December 5 at Gage Academy of Art.
Seattle, WA | October 9, 2009 — Try your hand at art during the 10th Annual Drawing Jam — a 12-hour art-making marathon — on Saturday, December 5, at Gage Academy of Art on Capitol Hill in Seattle. From 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Gage provides all the essentials for a full day of art creation.
In 2008, the Drawing Jam was named a “must do event” by Seattle Magazine, and no wonder why. Three floors of space, art supplies, food, models, inspiration and entertainment are all included with admission — just $10 for adults and free for teens and kids. Whether you draw, dabble or doodle, head to the Drawing Jam to give drawing —or even sculpting — from the model a try.
A cast of over 50 models will rotate through several studios. Dancers, musicians and performers act as gesture models, nude figure models pose up to three hours at a time, and costumed portrait models sit for drawing. Costumed models include the “Stars of Seattle” — a group of local celebrities, which in the past have included troupe members from Teatro ZinZanni, The Stranger’s Dan Savage, the SeaFair Pirates and Sylvia O’Stayformore.
The Drawing Jam at Gage Academy of Art is geared for all ages and abilities, and families are especially encouraged to come. Kids will have a room of their own to draw, paint and craft during the day, and teens will also have their own dedicated studio for all 12 hours of the event.
Even if you don’t create art yourself, this is a unique chance to see an art school in full swing. Studios will be open to tour, and you can catch a glimpse of art in the making as award-winning Gage instructors conduct drawing, painting and sculpting artist demonstrations. Three exhibitions will be on display as well, including a selection of paintings by local artists included in Gage teaching artist Mitchell Albala’s new book Landscape Painting: Essential Concepts and Techniques for Plein Air and Studio Practice.
No matter your age or ability, come to Gage and spend an hour — or the entire day — dedicated to creating art! Check back at www.GageAcademy.org/drawingjam as details emerge.
Buy your tickets at the door: $10 for adults, $5 for students with ID, and free for kids and teens. Free parking provided.
Presenting sponsors of the 10th Annual Drawing Jam at Gage Academy of Art are 4Culture and the Mayor’s Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs. Event sponsors include Artist & Craftsman Supply, Bellevue Art & Frame, Dakota Art Store and Daniel Smith Artists’ Materials.
Gage is located at 1501 10th Ave. E., on Capitol Hill next to St. Mark’s, Seattle, WA.
About Gage Academy of Art:
Celebrating its 20th Anniversary year, Gage Academy of Art is a non-profit art academy offering classical instruction in the principles of drawing, painting and sculpting. Gage offers a wide variety of classes, workshops, ateliers and more for artists of all ages and abilities. Gage Academy of Art won the 2007 Governor’s Arts Award for excellence in art education.
