Anything that kills like the Interstate, Autobahn or British Royal Highway needs
a speed that it won't kill at or transfer from those who's speed is safe for the

=v= It's even worse than that. California's gas tax is as
high as the federal tax, PLUS tons of money from the general
funds, PLUS the largest public works bond in U.S. history,
saddling the state with bond debt for 30 years. And even
all that isn't enough to keep the highways maintained.

=v= The region has Spare The Air Days, which are announced when
air quality is particularly bad, and in theory the state wishes
to discourage driving on those days. The part of the bridge
that failed is something they'd done a rush job on over the
Labor Day weekend, entirely to ensure that the bridge would be
open for cars on the following Tuesday. This despite the fact
that they *knew* it was about to become a Spare The Air Day!

For those who don't know, the busiest bridge in the San Francisco Bay
area, the Bay Bridge, is closed indefinitely due to 5,000 pounds of
metal falling off.

http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5haVUKEctcZ2vga98Vq6VQv9S5GFAD9\

Of course there will be a full effort by local, federal, and state
officials to repair and reopen the bridge as soon as possible so as
not to inconvenience drivers. But what I keep coming back to is our
paltry 18.4 cents per gallon federal gasoline tax. Granted California
taxes gasoline more than most other states, but it's still not enough
to fund new highway and bridge construction and maintenance. That
comes from the general fund.

I wonder how many other bridges and roadways will have to fail in the
coming years before America wakes up to the fact that if they want
reliable roads, they're going to have to pay for them. And the
fairest way to do that is have the people who use the roads pay.

=v= Today I saw a spastic guy kicking the door of a car. I
didn't intervene or anything, since I figured, better a car
than a human being. He then lurched over to the car's parking
meter, gave it the hairy eyeball, and punched it a few times.

=v= At this point I noticed that the car had a parking ticket.
He went back to the car, jumped onto the front hood, and tromped
across it. This left dents but, as with the door, they popped
right back out. Again, no reason to intervene.

=v= Then he got into the car and drove away.

Driver: W. Melbourne mom tried to sell son for gas money
	 BY KAUSTUV BASU
Florida Today | 28-Sep-2009

SUNTREE -- A 37-year-old woman was arrested Friday afternoon
after a tow truck driver told police that the woman offered to
sell her child to him in exchange for money to purchase gas,
Melbourne police said.

Marcy Pappalardo faces a charge of child neglect in connection
with the report. Police are investigating.

Melbourne police Sgt. Michael Casey said officers learned of
a 9-1-1 call about 3 p.m. from a tow truck driver who said a
woman had tried to sell him her 6-year-old boy in exchange for
gas money at a gas station near U.S. 1 and Lake Washington Road.

The driver refused, Melbourne police said, then followed the
mother, who was in a white sedan with her child and another
woman as he called police.

"He rolled up his window and followed her," Casey said. "They
drove all across north Melbourne."

Police stopped the white sedan in Suntree. Pappalardo was
questioned and arrested. Her 6-year-old boy sat on the trunk
of the car and cried as his mother was led away.

Roy Baijnath, the tow truck driver who lives in Palm Bay, said
he was concerned about the child's safety.

"You know, I have mixed feelings. To see the kid crying like
that on TV was tough. I caused that upon him, and I have a kid
of my own," Baijnath said Friday night. "But had it been the
other way, where would the child be?"

Mallory Acker, who was in the car with Pappalardo, told police
that the tow truck driver requested sex with the woman in
exchange for gas money.

"When she refused, he made up this story for police," Acker said.

No other arrests were made.

Baijnath said Friday night that there was no mention of sex in
the conversation.

The child is in the care of his father, police said.

Here are my profile answers;

1. I do not presently own a car though I have owned cars previously.

2. I have been car free for over 3 months.

3. I decided to do away with my car when I realized that if I didn't have to
support my car, I could quit my job! I have felt the tension and pressure from
the job and commute drain from me.

4. I have been inspired by the amount of money I don't have to spend, and by the
health benefits I've accrued in a mere 90 days of bike riding! I've lost a pants
size and a shirt size; I don't get winded as easily; I sleep better and I have
fewer aches and pains. I also get to spend healthful time with my nephews; we
bike all over the county. The down side of being car free--I have a mobility
impaired parent who was dependent on me for rides, however, she has come to
enjoy the independence she has gained by using public transit.

5. For the most part the impact on my family has been positive, as noted above.

6. The advantages I've discovered so far, along with the health benefits noted
above, I've found time--time to be a part of my family and attend the kids games
and practices, part of my community and local government, and time to indulge
long differed hobbies and persue knowledge for the joy of it. I've also learned
patience and time management both cycling and using the bus/train. The downside,
so far, has really only amounted to dealing with drivers not sharing the road
with bicyclists.

7. Rather than recommending giving up the car to friends and family, I merely
tell them what I've done in the course of conversation; tell them how I feel and
let them draw their own conclusions. I do it that way because I've found nothing
so annoying as an evangelist for anything--plant the seed and let it grow,
rather than beat them into "conversion".

8. The only adversity I've encountered so far has been a limit on how far from
my home I can entertain notions of working. And that has turned out to be no
adverse consequence at all. Financially, I've found a windfall, without car
payments, insurance and gas and oil, I've found $350.00 not spent.

9. As stated above, I've lost weight, gotten in better shape, and have more
money with less work involved. I have time to do as I want, and I can actually
say I am doing something to make the world a better place for my having been in
it.

10.In my ideal world the car would become an example and a monument to the
pursuit of an idea to an absurd extreme.

11. I'm happy to be a part of the future of our communities and to be an example
for the upcoming generations.
12. I live in Paso Robles, California, USA.

I am running an Xtracycle on a Novarra Randonnee that needs a new front
wheel (700x35-43) in the next 2-3 months. Also since I just scored a new gig
after 5 months of no work that sees me commuting around 10 at night I also
wanted to look to at a generator for lighting purposes.

Any ideas, recommendations, etc. would be awesome. Stability, strength, and
longevity are more important than weight.
Thanks and ride safe,

=v= The U.S. government has recently shelled out a lot of money
to reward bad behavior, a "Cash for Clunkers" program for idiots
who bought gas-guzzlers to trade for slightly-less-gas-guzzling
cars.

=v= It took a beer company to come up with the more intelligent
approach, Bikes for Clunkers:

There is a Kia car dealership adjacent to my neighborhood. One of the
entrances to my subdivision is across a two-lane road from the back of
this dealership. Over the weekend I noticed something. There were two to
three dozen, perhaps more, large vehicles parked outside their gate, along
both sides of the street, and even in the drainage ditch that parallels
the street on both sides. It dawned on me these were the "cash for
clunkers" trade-ins.

Here are my thoughts on this.

1. While I can't comment on the actual condition of any of these vehicles,
many appeared to be in good shape. But by law the dealership will have to
pour liquid glass into the gas tank rendering the engine inoperable and
these hulking shells will end up in a landfill.

2. How will buying cars built in South Korea boost our economy?

3. Who gave the dealership permission to store their inventory in public
space? Are they paying for this privilege? Do I want a vehicle possibly
leaking antifreeze, oil, and other fluids parked in a drainage ditch where
it'll eventually end up in our environment?

4. Once again people who choose to be carfree are left out. Why not pay
people not to own a car in the first place or to trade it in and walk
away, literally, with nothing?

As far as I know, the bulk of the resistance was from the property owners.
Most of us are pretty sick of the traffic and understand that doing nothing
is ultimately more expensive.

Ok, thanks AnnaLisa. I hope idea that kind of resistance was put up by
property owners.
