Description

For those interested in the Friends of Captain Scott Committee project to move and restore the "Captain Scott House," formerly located at the corner of SR 161 and 37 in Licking County, Ohio and now relocated to the west edge of the village of Alexandria.

About the Man:
A lifelong Licking Countian, Captain Joseph M Scott (1830-1919) was born in Utica and died in Alexandria.

He was a leader in the Anti Slavery Movement in St. Albans twp, and member of the Free-Soil Party. In Oct 1861, he raised Company B of 76th Ohio Volunteer Infantry ("Licking Volunteers"), and led his troops in action at Fort Donaldson, Shiloh, the Siege of Corinth, and the Battle of Milliken's Bend near Vicksburg.

Active in political, religious and civic affairs thoughout his lifetime, he was a historian who wrote most of the early history of the Alexandria St Albans Township area.

About the House:
This Victorian-era, Italianate-style home was built circa 1870 for Captain Scott, and was in the path of Ohio Department of Transportation’s widening of State Route 161: it had to be moved or demolished.

Italianate homes, libraries and town halls were built throughout the United States 1840-1885, and were most popular in the late 1860s. The Captain Scott House is unusual in that it includes two 2-storey side bays and has an overall cruciform shape. The double doors have classic molding and open to a foyer with spiral staircase. The back wing with the lower roofline contains the kitchen and workspace downstairs, and includes a back staircase to servants’ quarters upstairs.
