Wow, what a neat thing to hear from the Famous E. Lee. Roane after
all these years. And to mention Crazy Horse Rick Brandon in the
same post. I was a Voyager @ NWNCB in 1975 and had the pleasure of
learning the ropes under the tutelage of Rick Brandon, along with
guidance from Dick ("from the nort' side 'o Oshkosh")Pope and one of
the Grate Brothers (sp?). I managed to sprain my ankle during
training and was given the option of going back to base camp or
continuing with training. I opted for the later. After our group
returned from the trails, you asked me to stay on the remainder of
the year with the option to return the following. I did continue
and helped close the camp at the end of the year after helping out
in the mess hall and the outpost. I am sad to say that I never did
return, young love took me away and I have forever regretted it. I
have been chasing the ghosts of that summer ever since. Good to
hear a familiar voice (so to speak). Happy New Year. I hope to
hear from you again.

As you know, my Dad passed away in April 2007. My brothers and Bonnie and I took his ashes and my Mom's back to the family plot in Toledo, Ohio in August 2007. We had their ashes mixed together and interred them together as per their wishes. I did have the funeral home save me some of their mixed ashes and last Aug. 2008 I went back to Boulder Junction for three days. I scattered their combined ashes at the base where the office used to be, where the dining hall was, and where the directors quarters were located. I also put some in the water by the beach area in White Sand lake. While I was at the Base, I was being observed from very, very high up by a solitary bald eagle that kept circling. I remember thinking that if his mate joined him, that would have to "twilight zonish", but she didn't. The next day, I found the old Eagle Scout camp road
where they had put up a gate. So I parked and walked back to the clearing where the buildings stood on Lost Canoe. I spread some ashes there and then went down to the beach where I found three large rocks going out into the water. I carefully balanced myself out to the last rock and spread their remaining ashes in Lost Canoe. It was very bittersweet for me, but it was something that I promised myself that I would do for Mom and Dad. It gave me so much more closure than the trip to Toledo... I knew that they were truly home and together. I went up there by myself, but I was not lonely. My memories of the Base and all of the guys that made up the staff were in my mind and heart the whole time. Just wanted all of you to know that JEB and Jean are at peace. Hope this finds everyone healthy and well...we are all doing fine. Let us hear from you! Love to all of you, Barb [Boehm]

Dear NWNCB (R7NCB or R7CB) staff member,
Here's wishing you a safe and joyous holiday season and many blessings
in the coming new year.
It is at Christmas that I remember my winter experiences with Rick
Brandon and Bill Baar in 1975 and with my friend Art Hale (not a CB
staffer but a visitor in '74 and camping buddy at New Year's '76) in
the cabin behind the office and on the Voyageur Circle. -30deg F. 3 or

Welcome to the site. We had a reunion in 04 at the site of the base. Sorry we missed you.
The base closed officially in 86. In 1983 the base became part of the Charles Sommer base and operated as a satelite base for a few years. The base was losing attendance which eventually cause it's closing. I was on staff in 80-83 and saw part of the slide. Glad I wasn't there to see the end.
Stay in touch. Glad you found us!

Hi, This is Tom Simpkin. I was on the canoe base staff from 1974 to 1977. This is my first visit to this site or any others. I enjoyed the staff photos.
After graduating from the U. of Wisconsin in 1986 (after many years in school and 3 degrees), I moved to Colorado and have been working for as environmental engineer.
I have not had the opportunity to ever return to the Base.
One basic question, when did it close and why. I have 2 sons who are now both Eagle scouts and I have not seen anything about it.
Tim,
The Base closed in 1984. The last few years it was only open part of
the summer and staff with a minimun of staff. Sometimes they would
be staff from Sommers who would come down for the few weeks that
crews went through the Base. It's too bad that you've only recently
found the site because you missed the reunion in 2004. It was a
great weekend.

I just got emailed from a scout who attended the base in 1980 and
claims he remembered my picture from the web site. Nice to know I'm
memorable for 27 years.
He's asking for the words to the voyageur song. Anyone happen to have
that typed up anywhere in an electronic format? I thought we had some
messages about that a while ago.

Wish I could join you. Haven't been to BJ since the reunion in '04. Have a great time, and include all of us "Old Timers" in the toast to JEB. Enjoy the Walleye, too.

I would like to take this opportunity to inform the staff members from 1963-1974 that my Dad, JEB, passed away in his sleep Tues. morning. He had been having some health issues, no one specific thing, just a combination of alot of little things. He was never really happy after my Mom passed away in 1996. They were together for over 50 years and he never truly recovered from that experience. My sister and brothers were very lucky to have had wonderful parents, as I'm sure you former staff members know. He considered each of you family and was so proud of all of you {most of the time!} He remembered his years at the Canoe Base the fondest out of all his years in scouting. Thank you all for being a part of our lives..we will miss him so much. Stay in touch with each other if possible, you have all shared a once in a life time "high adventure!" God Bless you all, As Always, Barbara {Boehm} Behan
Thank you, Barb, for your fine email.
Give my best to your sister too.
As I said at the CB reunion, your father was a breath of fresh air and
integrity after the directorship of Al Hughes, who preceded him. I much
enjoyed him and now enjoy his memory.

sharing information about your work and or personal relationships,
however, I wanted to let you know Glen passed away on April 25. He

His e-mail address book was quite large and I hope I have not

She stops by me, catches my eye, and suddenly sings... "You can get anything you want... at Alices Restaurant". She smiles... and walks away. I didn't even know she liked the song.
Talk about surreal! When you 13 yr old sings a folk anti-war song made famous in the 70's while she's listening to an IPod, it's a little weird. The last time anyone sang that song to me was just
outside the Swamp, 1981-ish. Same verse. Thanks Jeff Laubenstein.

Hi All,
This recent activity prompted me to look on Google Earth to see what
remained visible of the old camp and I have to confess that I am somewhat
disorientated. Now I know 32 years is a long time and the old grey matter is
not what it used to be and that looking from the land is not quite the same

where I can clearly see what claims to be White Sands Lake but cannot work
out where the base used to be. Can anyone give me a lat long?

I agree that it did stir up some activity in the group, which is good. I was going to comment on that.
However, spam control should be at the group level and not necessary at the user level for these groups. Yahoo has settings which can control spam very well for a group like ours. The owner/moderators can set the group to moderate or approve postings by members. In other groups, we permit someone to join, and approve their membership, but require them to be on moderated status until one or more of their postings prove that they are really interested in the group and have some knowledge about the subject of the group. The moderators must approve the posting prior to it being sent to the group. At some point, the moderators can set the person posting to non-moderated, allowing their postings to go without being moderated. This works extremely well in other groups that I moderate. Of course, if we know the person joining, we can set them to unmoderated immediately. This takes a little time to manage on the part of the moderators, but it is worth it. I moderate and/or own several groups and I am able to moderate them even with my Palm Treo 600 while on the road. Having several trusted moderators makes it easier on everyone. There is no cost to this procedure, except the time spent by moderators.
It is disappointing that we have received no comment from the list owner, and apparently the only moderator.

The Yahoo groups can work well if they are managed properly. The ones I
either own or moderate have no problems with spam because of the control
over new members joining. I find the Yahoo groups very easy to manage and
fairly simple to configure. The "mailman" systems seem a
bit awkward and don't have the options and ease of use that Yahoo groups
do. Thanks for your comments, Bruce. I hope we can work out
something with the group to make it better.

Yes, I think the yahoo group "can" work. If our next attempts at gaining co-moderation ability, then I suppose we could entertain other options then.
I'm in Seattle at the moment. Hope you are all well.
The spam filter is not the best solution. Not everyone has the same
filter, and maybe not even a filter. The presence of spam will drive
people away. We really need to work toward having a spam free
group.
I don't understand why Larry doesn't answer his email on this.
Creating a duplicate group is a solution, but I hope we can avoid
that.

yet I think I get non-ad posts. So maybe that's a solution
too.
