Tips for Getting Organized
As a Group Member, you have options to keep you organized. Let's explain some of
these methods. Which method is best for you will depend on your personal
preferences.

You can change your delivery options using the list's web interface or by email
using the email commands described below. To use the web interface go to the URL
(http://groups.yahoo.com/group/CampbellsAustralia) and sign-in with a Yahoo ID,
click on “Edit my Membership”.

Method 1: Individual emails: This is the default option when you subscribe to
the list. Individual email messages will be sent to your subscribed address and
they will arrive at your inbox. The advantage of this option is that you can
read the messages you want, delete those you don't want, and save those messages
you want to keep for future reference. In addition, if
you use POP email (not web based), messages are downloaded to your machine, and
you can read the messages offline, at your convenience.

CampbellsAustralia-normal@yahoogroups.com gets you this type of mail (after you
have changed from digest or nomail).

Method 2: Daily digest : This method reduces the number of email messages you
receive from the list by consolidating messages into a daily digest.

CampbellsAustralia-digest@yahoogroups.com gets you this type of mail.

Method 3: No email/go on vacation/temporarily stop delivery: With this method
you do not receive list messages by email. Instead, you read list messages and
participate in the list using the web interface. The advantage of this method is
that you do not need an email program to participate in the list. You can access
the web interface from anywhere you have access to the Internet. And it is
available to all list members. You may also switch to this option when you want
to temporarily stop email delivery during vacation or for other reasons.

CampbellsAustralia-nomail@yahoogroups.com gets you this type of mail.

Method 4: Individual email with filters
With this method you receive individual list messages by email and you take
advantage of the filtering feature of your email program to get organized. The
CampbellsAustralia Group automatically prefixes the Subject field of all list
messages delivered by email with [CampbellsAustralia] to make it easy for you to
sort incoming messages.

Most POP email programs and web based email applications provide you with a
filtering tool to sort and organize incoming email messages. This tool is
usually listed under the Options or the Tools menus of your application. It may
be referred to as Rules Wizard, Messages
Rules, Inbox Assistant, Filters, or Custom Filters.

To take advantage of this feature, open your email application, create an email
folder called "CampbellsAustralia" . Then create a filter to automatically move
incoming messages that contain [CampbellsAustralia] in he subject line to the
designated folder.

Hi,
could anyone help me with my great, great grandfather John angus Campbell, who
married 17 october 1864 one Sarah ann Harris b. 1842 in Launceston. they had
john henry 1866, henrietta 1868, alfred andrew 1871, robert boyden 1873, louis
edgar(my great grandfather) 1875, ethel emily 1878, oscar william 1880, and
george clarence llew 1886. All were born at River Don near Devonport in northern
tasmania.
John angus 's death certificate says he was from Stirling in scotland, but
tradition also mentions kilmarnock. He worked as a clerk and died 3 december
1919. His death certificate gives his age as 89.
I would love to hear from any other descendents or anyone who has knowledge of
his parentage.
Many thanks
colette

Hi everyone
My name is Katrina Smythe. My mother was a Campbell and I have so far
traced her grandfather John Campbell to Glasgow. All I know is he
arrived in Australia before 1896 when he married Ellen Elizabeth
Giles in Sydney. His parents were John Campbell and Adelaide
MacIntyre (from his marriage certificate). I've found IGI entries for
his birth, his parents' marriage and 2 siblings.
My grandfather's name was Adam John or John Adam but known as Jack.
born 1905, died 1975. His siblings were:
Alexander born 1896 served in WWI in AIF, I believe he married
Hanorah P Linkenbach in 1920;
William F born 1902 married but don't know who to;
Ellen Elizabeth born 1917 married Maurice Bennett;
James born after 1918 (someone who looked for him on the 1918 bdm cd
couldn't find him) married Jean (can't find their marriage either).
There were 2 others who died very young.
I'm hoping someone here may know of these Campbells.
The 3 brothers apart from my grandfather had a paint factory called
Brigadier Paints in Waterloo and later Mortlake, Sydney.
My grandfather had a falling out with his brothers over unions and
walked out of the business, to become active in the Brewer's union.
I think Mum saw her cousins as a child but when we were young there
was no contact to speak of. In the few years before Mum died in 1992
she did spend some time with Jim and his wife Jean. I've spent $$$$
on phone calls trying to find them where I thought they lived but no
luck. I really hope I'm not too late. I'm still getting over finding
out that 3 of Mum's aunts and uncles on her Mum's side died in the
last few years, one only last year aged 94.
There are 2 of Mum's brothers still alive. I have gotten some info
from them and am waiting on certificates etc from them. They both
seem to find it hard to talk about the past and their sister has no
interest at all.
Regards
Katrina

Hi

I just started doing the database then it stopped allowing me to enter
data. When I tried to edit it, I was told I didn't have permission.

Click DATABASE
the Campbell file second down, in the green line is
the one. TYo the left is a EDIT or DELETE
Click EDIT to add.

I was worried it may only be me that could do it, but
someoe else (goofychick) has added hers, so it must be
accessible to others.
best wishes

Hi Katrina,

You need to click on the "Campbells" on the green line which opens
up the database, then click on "add record". I think this should
work.

Cathy.

I have just added a bunch of my Campbell's to the database by just clicking on "Campbell's" and then "Add Record". Seemed to work OK.

Good luck,
Cathy.

Thanks for adding your records Cathy, let's hope we
eventually have a roll call of every Campbell who ever
existed! It may help others in their search - there
MUST be connections somewhere!

Hello Gillian

Finally had time tonight to do it and it worked fine, but I think
there's too much info in the children column, it looks messy!

Thanks for hosting this group, it's a great idea.

Kind regards
Katrina

Hi Katrina,
whether messy or not, ANY information what helps is a
treasure!

I hope every with a campbell connection will add to
it, I find there are so many Campbells, especially
with the same first name, that it would be great to
have one large resource to consult.

Hi fellow Campbell researchers- thought Gillians database a great
idea, our list shows 64 members. It would be great to get all the
members to add too the database, amazing how many of us can help each
other. No matter how small, a small piece could be the link some one
else is looking for. Or entering certificates we have obtained, to
only find they do not belong to us. (Donald and Hugh Campbell, could
someone not be a little more original!! searching is a nightmare, and
expensive!) But may help someone else on the list. Come on
Campbell's!! See many of you out there can put your info on the
database.

Subject: [CampbellsAustralia] Re: Adding records to the Database

Hi members at CampbellsAustralia Group

As an early member of this group and a long time financial member of the
Clan Campbell Society in Australia (NSW Branch), I have been following this
group with interest.

I thought the group might come up with the descendants of the Campbell women
who married and whose descendants no longer carry the name Campbell. It is
often the women in the family who inherited family memorabilia or were
interested in their forebears, so a lot of missing information may be held
by people who no longer bear the name Campbell.

As to the Database, this is an enormous undertaking, and as not everyone who
has family information (often elderly) is computer literate, you might be
battling.

If anyone is interested, The Clan Campbell Society in Australia already has
a huge database of Campbells and their descendants which has been collected
over more than 30 years by several very hard working volunteer members. It
started as a card index and has been expanding every year as new members
send in their genealogy.

Members are now putting all the files onto computer, but again as these
people are volunteers, it is a long process. Anyone attending Scottish Games
in NSW where the Clan Campbell Society is present, can look at a hard copy
of these files, but as the Clan is a non profit making concern, we do not do
research for members or non members. We share what information we have with
financial members, but cannot afford to make the data base available
onlineto everyone. Our membership fees of $25 per year barely covers the
printing and posting of the 3 copies of our Clan magazine Cruachan.

This is not to say everyone on this list should join the Clan Campbell
Society, but if you do have a brick wall, and didn't know there was already
a Campbell database in existance, it may be another option.

The Society also has a very good reference library including Campbell and
Scottish related books, as well as information published about Australian
Campbell families. These vary from hard cover to personal photocopied
stories about specific lesser known Campbell families in Australia.

Barbara

PS: The new Clan Campbell Society of Australia website should be online in
the near future.

Hi Barbara,
Our database is for members on our list as an interest and a
contribution to their searches - not everyone has access to the Clan
Campbell database. The more the better in family history - even if there is
a double up.
Most genies these days are learning to be computer literate - that is
where I have found 99% of my information or sources, and others have found me
via
the internet. At our local SAGHS it is really heartwarming to see
so many elderly people intent at the computers. The publication of
infomation should never be discouraged, even if we only help one
person solve a family mystery, it is worth it. Has the
society thought about publishing their Campbell infornmation online?

Hi Gillian

Thanks for your prompt reply and also the work you have undertaken to do
with CampbellsAustralia. I agree the more information we can share the
better and hopefully we can pull down many of the brick walls.

The data base being compiled by the Clan Campbell Society in Australia is
huge and is still being copied electronically. It includes not only the
Australian Campbell but where possible their ancestral family trees, and
those descendants who no longer bear the name Campbell. All are being cross
referenced so families can be reunited if a match come up.

This information has to be checked and cross checked as we sometimes get
several different versions with different information and dates for the same
families.

Several attempts have been made over the last 20 years to put something
together that we could publish re Campbells in Australia, but that has also
fallen by the wayside when enthusiastic members realised how much work and
research would be involved, especially without infringing copyright if
including information from works already published. This includes text and
photographs.

I also speak from experience having published my own limited edition of my
Campbell family history 11 years ago. It took many years of research (over
20) but still contains errors and access to the internet has not cleared up
any of the brick walls. I just keep hoping.

I will do what I can to check anything posted to this list, against data I
have access to.

Regards
Barbara

PS Have had a lot of trouble with a new email address so not sure if my
original email has been repeated.
