I'll add that Josephina (This year's ball runner) took some great time and care
to make handouts and cds for practice. I'd suggest you contact her for
information. Please do not forget that two dances in her packet have been
replaced.

Last night, we had a great time at our first Mag Mor Dance Night. It was really
fun. We had 6 people there. Several others wanted to come, but couldn't due to
illness, working at the last minute, or school obligations. I think we'll have a
lot more people in two weeks. Sara Sophia did an outstanding job teaching
Carolingian Pavane. A member of our Barony, Iahan, owns a beautiful dance studio
and generously offered us his studio for bi-weekly dance practice.
http://basicallyballroomstudio.com/

Murdoch and I taught Horse's Bransle. We learned it via a combo of the Crystal
Ball mini-dance book and a You Tube video of people dancing at Pennsic to
Wolgemut. However, the video helped because I was able to say, "Oh that's what
the Crystal Ball instructions mean by 'paw!' " Who knows what I would have come
up without that visual aid!

We are planning to have more dance at Crown Tourney - time of day is not yet
determined. Tsire said she would be available to help us learn some new dances,
which will be fabulous. Maybe we can get through Tsire's top 10 Catch and
Release dances? Or, at least the top 5? I'm a beginner. (-:

Hope to see you in Mag Mor next weekend!

Emelye

Good GOD Emelye!!!
Great FREAKIN' JOB!!!
And how crazy fortunate to get to use a real dance studio. And, you know, that
is SOME dedication, learning dances off of YouTube to teach to your group.
Way to GO!

I suggest

Ly Bens Dystonis (English 1400's)
for Couples

Single, Single, Double
Lord Forward a Double as Lady Back a Double
(Lord turn about to face Lady)
Both Forward a Double to meet Right shoulders
Both Continue Forward a Double
(Both turn about to face each other)
Both Forward a Double to meet Left shoulders
(Lady turn about to face head of hall)
(Take Hands) Step away from you partner, Step toward your partner
Turn out (Lord Counterclockwise, Lady Clockwise)

It's fun to think of this dance as a tumultuous relationship.
You start out walking together, move apart, come together, move apart, come
together, connect, struggle out then in, spurn one another and begin again. :)

Just read Tsire's suggestion of Ly Bens. That's a great idea. Could you teach
that one? You did such a great job with Carolingian. Keeping with my Bransle

Bransle CD. (-:

Hey so we have another dancing huscarl? Cool.

So since crown is a camping event (i.e. we don't get thown off site at 9 pm or
such)
is there enought interest to have an impromptu little ball? We dance on the
grass at lilies?

I love Conrad's idea also. I also can't wait to call Murdoch "The Dancing
Huscarl." (-:

On site, there is a large enclosed Pavilion where the Inn will be. It's ideal
for dancing later on in the evening. I will run it by Countess Isadora, the
autocrat. If for some reason the Pavilion is occupied, there are other buildings
that might work without having to have a Ball on the grass. I will check and get
back with you.

What a treat this will be to have a dancing at Crown Tourney.
Emelyne, thanks for checking up on the space. Is there a way to post the intent
to have dance instruction and evening social dancing on the web page for the
event as well? It's not a huge deal, just an idea.

Ok, now I want to list DH after names for Dancing Huscarl instead of Designated
Hitter. :)
I feel like I need to cast pins (or have pins cast) to designate the tongue in
cheek Order of the Dancing Huscarl.

Woohoo!! I'll be there, at your beck and call (or, well, something like
that).

I know we can count on Emelye. And I'm hoping Ermenrich will bring
Kasha and her rockin' drum. Any other musicians planning to be at Crown?

Bring it on!

Heard back from Isadora. Looks like we have space for a mini-ball. Here's what
she said:
"The tabernacle is what it’s called and, yes, it should be available with a bit
of work. It will be set up for the evening court, so there will be lots of
benches in the middle of the room. You’ll need a small crew to move the
benches. Not all of them will need to be moved, but for those that are, it would
be wonderful if they were moved into the northeast corner of the tabernacle.
That’s where they’ll need to eventually be moved anyway!!! Hey, that would be
great – less to do in the morning! There are white “Christmas tree” lights
strung along the ceiling beams of the tabernacle which will provide subdued but
pretty good lighting. Perhaps musicians who are reading music will want a bit
more light...will have to investigate that once we get out there."

I know HL Murdoch, DH can help move benches! (-:
Musicians might want to bring booklights. I will talk to the web page person to
see if she can put an announcement on the page.

Hello to all on the list! I just joined up and I'm looking forward to
all the dance discussion (even though I'm just one of those musician
types.) :>

Now that I'm here, I hope you won't mind if I post a small bit of
advertising regarding the upcoming Lilies War. We've just gone live
with some webpages with the aim to list dance and music information
for the war, so that the info is both easy to find and offers the
details you need. You can find the home page here (and we have a link
on the Calontir A&S page as well):

http://www.calontir.sca.org/lilieswar/lilies22/MusicDance/cmd_home.html

If anyone has anything to add to the pages regarding music classes,
dance classes or music events, please contact me!

Best regards,
Lucia (from B3R)

I posted this on the Calontir list. Hope to see you there . . .

At Crown Tourney, we will have dancing in the Tabernacle building after Feast.
(The same building where the Inn and merchants will be earlier in the day.)
Bring your instruments and/or dancing shoes and join us. For musicians, copies
of music will be provided at the event.

Thanks,

Lady Emelye Tayte.

I can cover the music part of Ly Bens. Good to know that we need to be aware of
more than one version.

I don't have the music for it. I'm one of the co-autocrats for Crown tomorrow

Thanks for the heads up. :-)

I'm guessing you probably got your music for Ly Bens either form our

musicians or it's the same as the 'Dragonscale's Consort' version?

There are 2 reconstructions to this dance and they use different

versions of the music.

I just want to make sure you have matched versions, otherwise things

won't quite fit.

Sorry it has taken me so long to answer this. Very busy week,

apparently, since I haven't been on email most it. :-)

I will attempt to teach Ly Bens. I'm looking forward to meeting Tsire on

Saturday. :-)

Back to frantic activity. ;-)

Just read Tsire's suggestion of Ly Bens. That's a great idea. Could you

teach that one? You did such a great job with Carolingian. Keeping with

my Bransle theme, I could do Charlotte Bransle. I can just work my way

through my Wolgemut Bransle CD. (-:

Also, remember Tsire will be here at Crown next Saturday to impart her

dance knowledge. YAY!!!

Last night, we had a great time at our first Mag Mor Dance Night. It was

really fun. We had 6 people there. Several others wanted to come, but

couldn't due to illness, working at the last minute, or school

obligations. I think we'll have a lot more people in two weeks. Sara

Sophia did an outstanding job teaching Carolingian Pavane. A member of

our Barony, Iahan, owns a beautiful dance studio and generously offered

us his studio for bi-weekly dance practice.

Murdoch and I taught Horse's Bransle. We learned it via a combo of the

Crystal Ball mini-dance book and a You Tube video of people dancing at

Pennsic to Wolgemut. However, the video helped because I was able to

say, "Oh that's what the Crystal Ball instructions mean by 'paw!' " Who

knows what I would have come up without that visual aid!

We are planning to have more dance at Crown Tourney - time of day is not

yet determined. Tsire said she would be available to help us learn some

new dances, which will be fabulous. Maybe we can get through Tsire's top

10 Catch and Release dances? Or, at least the top 5? I'm a beginner. (-:

Hope to see you in Mag Mor next weekend!

Duke Fernando piqued my interest about an instrument I'd never before
heard of and prompted me to look and learn more. Having enjoyed Caz's
'build' pages, I likewise enjoyed this _long_ but excellent build page
(with links to other build pages) for a progression of several Citoles
(much as Caz's rebec build page had iterative development of consecutive
instruments.

http://www.crab.rutgers.edu/~pbutler/citole.html

Hope you enjoy it as much as I have. I found it a bit depressing as I
lack the basic talent of eye and form and creativity that he's put into
the carving and design. My strengths lie elsewhere. My lutherie will
always be much more functional than creative with lots of effort to
cover up mistakes, but I do take comfort in the fact that I am improving
bit by bit. I don't think I'd ever have the patience or dedication to
allocate funds and time to build mock ups and trials even though in the
long run it would probably save me time and material costs (and
frustration) when I make my mistakes on the mock ups instead of
destroying the piece I'm putting my heart into.

Cheers.

I'm so happy I could pop.

Yesterday, I attended a cute little renaissance festival in the Amana
colonies, about 15 miles from Iowa City. And there as a Renaissance
dance / music troupe there, "abeas Corpus", directed by a woman named
Rachelle Tsachor (http://www.uiowa.edu/~music/bios/MVMTtsachor.htm).

They performed 16th Century Italian, French, and English Country Dance.
And they need musicians.

Yay.
