Here are my two cents worth on the issue. First let me say that I am relatively
new to dance. I have danced at about a dozen or so balls, but it really was not
until about a year ago that I realized I was beginning to pick up on some of its
parts (other's are still eluding me). That being said, it took one year for me
to learn Korobushka was not period. It took another two years to learn Hole in
the Wall was not period. The reason? No one told me. Now I LOVE korobushka.
It is my intent to dance it at my wedding. But I also know that it is not
period and thus might not be appropriate for certain venues. That was a
decision I made.

The SCA is full of adults. Sure we act childish at times (myself more than
others I am sure), but we are still able to make our own decisions when given
the right information. I cannot stop someone from wearing rayon to an event. I
can give them a period alternative of fabric choice, but in the end I cannot
stop them. The same is with dancing. I can let people know, gently, what is
period and what isn't. I can teach what I want to teach and dance what I want
to dance. What we have to allow is for people to make their own choice.

Ermenrich

Hello, Tsire. Well met.

You related:

Does this really surprise you?

Tsire, you're the poster child for good behavior in this matter. You
don't act all huffy at people, you have reasons which you're willing
to share if people ask. In my experience, this makes you weird.

The first reason people see it as an attack is that you're acting in a
fashion *similar* to those people who *do* use it as an attack. There
are folk, presumably none in Calontir, who actually approach strangers
and criticise the authenticity of their garb or kit or activities.
They may have the nicest smiles in their kingdoms as they do this, but
they are malignant things.

It is, in most cases, an entirely different matter to update one's own
garb, kit, and activities; that is wholly commendable.

But a person leading a ball cannot purge non-period dances from her
own repertoire without purging them from others'. You're not just
saying "I won't dance 'Landler'. You're saying 'and I'm going to
impede you from dancing Landler, too.'"

I don't know that there's an easy solution. Cooks make decisions
about what other people eat. Musicians make decisions about what
other people hear. Et cetera.

(I recently come from a kingdom where, indeed, the dancing "in-crowd"
has actually mocked the dances they do not like, calling them 'grossly
out of period' and acting disrespectfully towards the musicians who
play them and the gentles who dance them. In doing, they have
offended some people and driven others to seek alternate evening
activities.)

The other reason this is contentious is that it happens on a visceral
level. Let's say that you really like to dance, oh, "The Parson and
the Maid". It's one of your favorites. You teach it, so that others
will dance it with you.

Then I come along, with my opinion that using Playford, qua Playford,
is a ridiculous source; the manual is 50 years post-period, and we
know that dance was changing tremendously in England during those 50
years. So I refuse to teach Playford dances that weren't independely
documented as having pre-1600 antecedents, and when I'm running a
ball, I refuse to allow any of that post-period Playford stuff.

Or, worse yet, I come along and announce that Playford is bad, and I
have *no* articulable reasons. (My real reason is that I admire a few
dance laurels and teachers, and they joke among themselves about
Playford, and I've never stopped to ask why. I just know that 'people
who know' don't like it.)

And it looks like I'm going to do my best to keep you from doing your
favorite dance. I'm going to try to drive it out of the SCA.

Is it so hard to see how people would take that as an attack?

I hear you, Tsire...

Yeah, it sucks, and I can see why you are baffled that this makes you "the bad
guy". Many, many people just can't hack hearing the words "No, not today"
without acting the victim. Even when you're just trying to "up" the coolness
factor by promoting the time period we are supposed to be interested in.

I agree, completely, with your attempts to promote dances that are more
appropriate to what we are trying to accomplish, as a group, overall. I am also
glad that you continue to do what you do, in spite of some negative reactions
that you may receive. If what you are doing was easy, it would probably have
been done by now.

By the way, at Gulf Wars this year, Master Octavio (whom I love with all my
heart) was bragging, rather gleefully, about never having to play several of the
goop songs we were playing at the ball, because "in TRIMARIS, we don't DO these
dances".
Well, I got to brag back to him, that "in CALONTIR, we don't play them EITHER!"
(well, at least not too much, lately!)

I have noticed at wars that Calontir has a larger number of "period" tents and
people in "period" shoes than many other kingdoms. I like adding "period" dances
to that little list.

So...thanks, Tsire.

   Christian and List

argh! star trek! I spit hot coffee! Too funny.

and now for the serious portion of our show....

To send a dance out to the farm where it can play out it's remaining years is
a great thing. This is, believe it or not, my favored method of making more
period dance happen. As vocal as I seem about topic, you will rarely find me on
lists discussing it, and you will never find me discussing it unbidden.

Here is the major place that I get stuck. If you don't teach a dance and don't
mention a dance, what do you do when someone asks you specifically why you don't
do it? Well, I try to explain why I made that choice and why it makes sense for
me. I try to be rational and factual and gently make my point. However, when I
do this, I am met with whining, complaining, incendiary language, frustration,
anger, and endless mind-numbing, antactid-requiring debates.

It baffles me that my opinion and explanation of my choices can seem so much
like 'fightin' words' to some. It confuses me further that a bid to do more
period things in a history club is seen as such a negative thing. I've never
asked that people stop doing these dances altogether. I've asked that people be
educated as to what they really are doing. I've asked them to think critically
about the choices they make. I choose not to dance, teach, include in a ball
list, or otherwise encourage the propagation of out of period dances. It's my
opinion, I'm entitled to it. If you ask me about it, I'll tell you. If you
don't, I won't.

How am I the bad guy here?

Any help from any of you on this list would be appreciated here. I really want
to know how to get my opinion across and to encourage period dance while never
again being revered to as a Nazi.

   Tsire
The tired, frustrated, antacid chomping dance monkey.

Thanks everybody. Your responses are like the hug you need when the day sneaks
up and jumps you for your spare change. I get flustered sometimes. I'm
emotional, connected and passionate. This has it's notably good and bad points.

Constantia - wahoo go Calontir street cred!

Yes Christian, it does baffle me. I have this unshakable belief that I'm talking
to rational people, and that all people are trustworthy, and have basically good
intentions. This gets me into trouble often. I'm just not the cynic I need to
be. :)

One of the things that got my attention was Ermenrich saying he didn't know for
2 years that some dances weren't period. (It's the reason that we did Dance
Jeopardy this year) To quote GI Joe "Now you know, and knowing is half the
battle" Lack of awareness is one of my biggest frustrations and why I'm so
vocal about period dance. I remember being devastated when I began to learn
about which dances were and weren't period. I did not learn this in a nice way.
Since then I have worked hard to make other people's experience with dance nicer
and more fun. I don't deride, I try to inform and I hope it works. Less
devastation, more dancey boing!
If we 'catch em' early and get period dance into their repertoire then they'll
be telling me that they'll do Piantone, Villanella, or Confesse at their wedding
instead. I fully believe that of the first 5 dances you learn, 2 will become
your lifetime favorites. If the first five you learn are period dances, then the
ones you'll be begging to do will be period dances....easy, peasy, done. We'll
be doing the dances they love and no one feels 'robbed of fun'. It's the dancer
catch and release program!

What a great thread! Does this mean "Hole in the Wall" can go to the farm? If
so, I'll drive the tractor that takes it there.

Also, love this quote of Tsire's:

As you know Tsire, we in Mag Mor are starting bi-weekly dance practice in our
Barony, beginning tomorrow. The lovely Sara Sophia is teaching Carolingian
"Belle Qui Tiens Ma Vie." I love that song and yes, it's one of the first dance
music songs I learned to play, so I guess it hooked me. I don't know who else is
showing up tomorrow and the only thing I think I would be remotely qualified to
teach would be one Branle. Hopefully, I won't scar anyone for life with my
rendition of Horse's Branle. Maybe we'll only do two songs. So what are your top
5 songs for getting new dancers on the right track with period dances? Anyone
else want to volunteer their top 5 favorite "catch and release" songs for new
dancers?

   Thanks,

   Emelye

My top song is "Gathering Peascods." It is simple, fun, and the chorus gets
stuck in your head for days. In the end I think English Country is the first
"type" of dance to teach. Since it has a standard pattern for the verses,
people can feel comfortable with it. I recently taught some dances to a
Roundevous group in the area and used EC dances so they all had a common theme.
It seemed to work well.

I have a theory on why people might get grumpy. If they don't dance
that often they may fall into the category of:

a) we did it long ago

b) it's the only one I remember a) by name b) the steps to c) enjoying

c) I don't attend regular practices and dances so I don't know that it's
fallen out of favor... or more importantly... why.

d) I don't attend regular anything, so when I get a chance to dance
you're a jerk if you don't dance my favorite one... I mean.. you get to
dance all the time.

Of course, if (any of) this is true, it doesn't make it any easier to
deal with *sigh*. It's not like you can tell them to 'get with the
program, chum' and have that go over well :(

It was Master Octavio who was largely responsible for
the fact that no Trimarian knows any out of period
dancing. This was not because he browbeat Korabushka
out of anyone, it was just that no one in the Kingdom
remembered how to dance. Because he wanted to play
for dance, he had to teach some people how to dance.
Now that he has done that, and he saw no reason to
teach any controversial dances, he can play music
again. I am his apprentice.

So, here's my diplomatic difficulty. I know nothing
of the corpus of out of period dances. Having no
attachment to them, I am not inclined to put them on
dance sets though I am not insensitive to the desires
of people to dance their favorites. I am coordinating
Gulf Wars dance next year. I realize that over a
series of years this has been carefully negotiated at
Pennsic but I'm not sure where the Gulf Wars dance
community is on this.

How endangered will my life be next March?
(By the way, if you are going to GW and would like to
teach a class, let me know.)

where necessary. For preference, turn your line counter clockwise. This creates
an opportunity for the Lord to take larger steps and the Lady to take smaller

I hope this helps, and keep the questions coming

Thanks everyone for the greetings, advice and links. :-) I'm not the one that is
actually spearheading dance in Mag Mor, Emelye is. But I have volunteered to
help teach. I will be at Crown as I'm one of the co-autocrats. I don't know how
busy I will be during the day, but I would love to get together and talk dance
as well as get pointers on teaching. I've only been on the student side of dance
so far so we'll see how the teaching goes. I think we will only have 1 dance
practice before Crown, this Thursday, so things shouldn't go too wrong before
Crown. :-) The first dance I'm teaching is a pavane.Which does bring up a
question, can you turn corners during a pavane ? If so, how is that worked? Or
what do you do when you get to the end of your space? The entire line turn
around and go the other direction? Thanks again,Sara SophiaTo:

I'll add that Josephina (This year's ball runner) took some great time and care
to make handouts and cds for practice. I'd suggest you contact her for
information. Please do not forget that two dances in her packet have been
replaced.

Last night, we had a great time at our first Mag Mor Dance Night. It was really
fun. We had 6 people there. Several others wanted to come, but couldn't due to
illness, working at the last minute, or school obligations. I think we'll have a
lot more people in two weeks. Sara Sophia did an outstanding job teaching
Carolingian Pavane. A member of our Barony, Iahan, owns a beautiful dance studio
and generously offered us his studio for bi-weekly dance practice.
http://basicallyballroomstudio.com/

Murdoch and I taught Horse's Bransle. We learned it via a combo of the Crystal
Ball mini-dance book and a You Tube video of people dancing at Pennsic to
Wolgemut. However, the video helped because I was able to say, "Oh that's what
the Crystal Ball instructions mean by 'paw!' " Who knows what I would have come
up without that visual aid!

We are planning to have more dance at Crown Tourney - time of day is not yet
determined. Tsire said she would be available to help us learn some new dances,
which will be fabulous. Maybe we can get through Tsire's top 10 Catch and
Release dances? Or, at least the top 5? I'm a beginner. (-:

Hope to see you in Mag Mor next weekend!

Good GOD Emelye!!!
Great FREAKIN' JOB!!!
And how crazy fortunate to get to use a real dance studio. And, you know, that
is SOME dedication, learning dances off of YouTube to teach to your group.

I suggest

Ly Bens Dystonis (English 1400's)
for Couples

Single, Single, Double
Lord Forward a Double as Lady Back a Double
(Lord turn about to face Lady)
Both Forward a Double to meet Right shoulders
Both Continue Forward a Double
(Both turn about to face each other)
Both Forward a Double to meet Left shoulders
(Lady turn about to face head of hall)
(Take Hands) Step away from you partner, Step toward your partner
Turn out (Lord Counterclockwise, Lady Clockwise)

It's fun to think of this dance as a tumultuous relationship.
You start out walking together, move apart, come together, move apart, come
together, connect, struggle out then in, spurn one another and begin again. :)

Hey so we have another dancing huscarl? Cool.

So since crown is a camping event (i.e. we don't get thown off site at 9 pm or
such)
is there enought interest to have an impromptu little ball? We dance on the
grass at lilies?

I love that idea and I'll be camping. I'd be happy to facilitate or help out
with making that happen.

I love Conrad's idea also. I also can't wait to call Murdoch "The Dancing
Huscarl." (-:

On site, there is a large enclosed Pavilion where the Inn will be. It's ideal
for dancing later on in the evening. I will run it by Countess Isadora, the
autocrat. If for some reason the Pavilion is occupied, there are other buildings
that might work without having to have a Ball on the grass. I will check and get
back with you.

What a treat this will be to have a dancing at Crown Tourney.
Emelyne, thanks for checking up on the space. Is there a way to post the intent
to have dance instruction and evening social dancing on the web page for the
event as well? It's not a huge deal, just an idea.

Ok, now I want to list DH after names for Dancing Huscarl instead of Designated
Hitter. :)
I feel like I need to cast pins (or have pins cast) to designate the tongue in
cheek Order of the Dancing Huscarl.

Tsire

Woohoo!! I'll be there, at your beck and call (or, well, something like
that).

I know we can count on Emelye. And I'm hoping Ermenrich will bring
Kasha and her rockin' drum. Any other musicians planning to be at Crown?

Bring it on!
Conna
