And the wonderful thing about this event is, that the Autocrat will compile
the class lists, and will attempt to design a few tracks. However, the
dancers have the complete and final say in the order of the classes, because
we like it that way :)

All right folks - you heard the autocrat - it's time to step up and teach a
class. Challenge yourself. You can do it.
This is a friendly low-key event. It is a perfect place to begin teaching
and take a chance. Aisha used it last year as a warm up for classes she
would teach at Lilies war. What a great example she has set!
I challenge all of you who have never taught, rarely taught or always teach
one thing to do something new and take a leap.
We need your help to make dancing in Calontir thrive.

Duchess Rondallynn's Pavanne is done to Mannheim Steamrollers's tune
Toot-a-Loot (track 12, I believe) on Fresh Aire II (2). As for the
dance itself, from what I remember being told, it's a mish-mash of
favorite steps from favorite dances of one Duchess Rondallynn. There's
the three-point spins from Korobushka; the wrist tapping from
Jouyessance Vous Donnerai; and various pavan & galliard bits
connecting it all together.

details to follow in the future after I have a telephone conversation with

This is fabulous news. I will not be there but what I would like to see is
someone step up and offer to organize and lead dancing for this. Space to dance
is one thing, but someone there to say 'hey let's dance' and 'let's dance this,
why yes I have the steps right here, ...lozenge...etc, would make it more
readily actually happen. This is a great, relaxed and informal way to start
leading dance snd to invite people to dance. We are blessed with friendly,
talented, willing, and relaxed musicians...if you travel to dance, you'll know
this for the rare wonder that it is. So come on dance enthusiasts, take
advantage of Calontir's vast national resources and make it happen at
Coronation.

Not a dance event, mostly. One of the stations is a station where
your team must dance a certain dance. Live music will be preformed by
the Grimfells Music Esemble. (with help of our friends I hope!)

Thank you to all the musicians who came out to play at Coronation,
serenading Caillin in her Rose ceremony. And special thanks to HL Ailsa, for
arranging the space and herding us into place.

The weather couldn't have been lovelier. And the turnout was great. Special
thanks to Emily (Katriana's daughter) who helped wrangle the music stands
when the wind blew them over. And to HE Xorazne, who provided many seats for
us.

And a big hearty Calontir welcome to Elysse (I'm sorry, I'm sure I'm
butchering the spelling--pronounced ee-lace), who just moved to the Oakheart
area from the Outlands. This was her first Calontir event, and I'm glad she
came by to play with us.

I can hardly wait for the next event with an open pit! Yeah music!

Hey all,

  Ermenrich and I have updated the website again for the Bellewode Symposium;
this SHOULD be the last update. However, if you woke up this morning saying to
yourself "If I don't run this class now, I'll never be able to face myself in
the morning!", then please feel free to email me a class idea. We have a few
open slots left.

TEACHERS- please look for your classes, just in case we got something wrong,
and let us know. Obviously, we'd prefer to find out about our screw-ups now
rather than Saturday. :-)

If you have any questions, please let me know, and I'll see you Saturday!

A hearty thank you to all the musicians and dancers who came out for the fun
at Bellewode this weekend. I had a great time! And I'm not sure when the

I had expected the dancing to peter out, but the last dance of the ball set
had a ton of dancers, still going at it. It was terrific to see!

Thanks, everybody!

A hearty Hear Hear to that!
This event is always attended by such enthusiastic fun people.
The dancing was joyous, and the attendants astounded me with their glee, energy,
and willingness to just give dancing a shot. The music was amazing, engaging and
well played.
As usual, I left this event with renewed energy for dance.

If you see one of the happy sprites that inhabit Bellewode soon, I encourage you

It was because I didn't come.

I'm no longer saying that I am coming to events.... if I do that, I may
actually be allowed to go. I honestly think God hears me say that I'm
going and then throws something in my path.... in this case about $1100
of legal troubles with a neighbor falsely reporting my
locked-in-the-house dog for menacing him.

Every single time..... Every single time.

Hey all,

Thank you to everyone who came up to Bellewode for the Symposium this past
weekend! For the most part, everything ran very smoothly (which is almost
certainly a reflection on the populace's coordination and forethought, and not
the autocrat's... :-)), and pretty much all I've heard is that people had a
great time!

Of course, extra thanks go to everyone who volunteered to teach a class for
us, even those who had issues come up that made their attendence impossible- the
Symposium depends on teachers to exist, so Bellewode thanks you all heartily for
volunteering. Incidentally, while I only really got to sit in on one or two
classes, there were a LOT of them that I wish I could have taken; bravo!

Also, Tsire put on a great ball for us, and wrangled up a bunch of
gregariously rowdy musicians for it, and I can't thank her enough for that.

In short: thanks to everyone who came to Bellewode's Symposium, and everyone
here hopes to see you all again very soon!

   In service,

-Lord Aldheim of Seven Oaks, no longer the autocrat!

Micha, the leader of the medieval style musical group, Wolgemut , (
http://www.wolgemut.net/ ) will be at Lilies War this year! For anyone
interested in playing or purchasing medieval style bagpipes or
rauschpfiefes, here is a rare opportunity to learn from the best! Here is
what he sent in a letter to me:

"I will have several bagpipes for use for workshops as well as for sale.

I also hope to have a few prototype Rauschpfeiffes for testing. I will
also have some new music and arrangements for a Rauschpfeiffe workshop. I
will need some assistance in getting the word out about the workshops. In
addition to a Bagpipe and Rauschpfeiffe workshop, I'm also interested in
holding a generic, Medieval Music jam workshop."

You can be assured that if you buy an instrument from Micha, you will come
away with a playable, in tune, well working instrument and a basic knowledge
of how to start practicing - MUCH different than buying a set of pipes by
mail order or from a store that can't even help you adjust a reed! Face it,
how many of us have instruments at home that we bought and can't play -
either because it's a faulty instrument, or the instrument needs some minor
tweaking, or we just don't know where to start?

For those of you who have heard only Conna and me play rauschpfiefes, come
to a workshop with Micha and hear how they are really SUPPOSED to sound! The
rauschpfeife is also somewhat adaptable to middleeastern style music too, by
the way.

I suspect that the "medieval music jam workshop" might involve other
instruments as well(drums, strings, etc) but I have no information other
than what I just posted from Micha. There are no set dates or times as yet.
He will be arriving at Lilies on Monday or Tuesday, and staying through the
week. Workshop times and days will be posted in the music tent on the battle
field as soon as they are decided.

Come and participate, or just sit in, on a workshop or two - this man is a
gold mine of musical information! (He's pretty darn nice too.)

See you at the music tent,

Constantia Innocenti

Thanks to all the musicians who came to Lilies and played in the music
pits. I had a terrific time playing with you all this year. Special
thanks to the hearty brave souls who were up to the challenge of the
jamfests organized by Micha of Wolgemut in the Broken Harp.

The dance party on Monday night sponsored by our dear friends in the
Barony of Shattered Crystal was a whole lot of fun. I know it's a
tremendous amount of work from our Midrealm friends, but I had a great
time, and I was really pleased with the turnout.

Thank you to Lady Neathery, who organized this year's pilgrimage on
Tuesday afternoon. I thought it was a lot of fun, especially the
encore performance at Ellien's laureling vigil Wednesday night by
candlelight. I received lots of positive comments about it.

And a heartfelt thank you to our dancing Midrealm friends Philippe and
Shannon, who graciously stepped forward to make sure that we had a
Liles Ball this year. It would have never happened without you, and I
am deeply in your debt. You have my deepest regard.

Love,

I heard through the grape vine that there was quite a turnout for my classes
(Drunken Rounds and Easy Sight Reading for beginners) at Lilies and,
unfortunately, I was not there to lead. I was unable to attend Lilies due to
a death in the family and I hope that you will forgive the inconvenience
that was caused. I would like to thank Una Billy for stepping in and holding
a class in my place. I will, however, teach these classes at another time.
Once again, I am sorry that I missed you if you attended and I do hope that
your Lilies was most enjoyable anyway.

Sigh,
It sounds like you all had alot of fun and I'm glad the dance and ball stuff
went well. Especially since so many of the dance teachers had real life
meltdowns and couldn't make it this year (I counted up six of us that were
not going or only making only a small part of Lilies this year).
Thankyou to all who were involved in keeping dance going without us pushing

Love,
Conna

?

There will be a short ball (two sets of 5 or 6 dances) fallowing feast
at Gryphon/Mammoth event and wile
we can use Musicians in a box (aka CD player) it would be great to have
live dance music. So if you would
like, and are able to play for us at Courtly Love please e-mail me off
list so I can see if we have enough people
and can get input on dance selection.

Greetings.
Cross posting to try to reach the largest knowledge base possible.

Our shire had a demo last night and I was told by many people that they
were really happy to have me playing mandolin & alto & tenor recorders
in the background while they did their A&S display and then Fighting
demonstration.

It got me thinking and I need some help. [ I usually need help with
thinking *grin*]

I'm having difficulty getting our music group back up and running this
new semester, and dance has been regretfully nearly dead since Seonaid
went away *cry*. I'm thinking this endeavor might kill two birds with
one stone in that it may also get people energized for both of these
activities again.

The endeavor:

How cool would it be to have two or three dances worked up that only
require two couples or four singles. With live music, with at least two
instruments playing in harmony/counterpoint, it would be wonderful. I
expect I could talk another member or two into learning the soprano
parts of a couple of dances for this purpose leaving me the harmony.

The dances would need to have the following requirements I am thinking:

1. Able to be danced with a low turnout ( 2 couples or 4 singles, etc.
We have perhaps this many in a core group that is diligent to attend
most demos and such).

2. Able to be danced in poor venues (we can't always be blessed with a
ballroom to dance in).

3. Simple, both for our shire members in learning for the initial group
and in picking up the dances if perhaps we end up with 3 singles, or 1.5
couples or similar.

3.1 Simple so that we might invite the public to join us. We'd have
cheat sheets printed with the steps so that any of our core group would
be able to 'call/teach' the steps.

3.2 A dance that would allow audience participation.

4. It's gotta look super cool and fit people's stereotypes of medieval
music and dance (Loosely.. I realize the importance of authenticity,
but also the importance of doing something that the audience can relate
to and not be turned off by.)

5. They have to be non-acrobatic, non-contact. No tossing of Duchesses
and the like, and perhaps it's best to limit physical contact to
touching of hands and forearms. These could be children of either
gender and they can't be expected to throw people around even if they
realize that it's largely stylized and that the Duchess does a good
percentage of the tossing. Also height & weight differences would be a
consideration. Finally, keeping physical contact between adults and
children need to be absolutely appropriate and obviously above board.

6. It would be beneficial if we had a history/genre/style description of
the dance/music/steps/etc that could be read off ahead of time to
provide education and evoke interest. It would also underscore the fact
that we are an academic re-enactment group and not just a bunch of
freaks (the public's word, not mine... to each their own), who like to
dress up and 'pretend' they ride dragons and cast spells.

So... I'd welcome suggestions of a tune list. I'd really like to have
a minimum of three and would be very happy with four.
