Speaking of which, was there ever a pdf form of the Lilies Ball music?
I'm really just looking for an electronic copy of the Official Bransle,
which wasn't in the Crystal Ball 23 sets. I suppose I could scan it,
but I thought I'd ask.

Hello all,

I stumbled upon your group whilst searching for historic dance
groups. Please tell me, where are you dancing?? Many years ago I was
apart of the Barony of Mag Mor and participated in the music and
dance. However because of other activities that I was involved in I
had to step away for a time.

Now that my children are gone from the household and life is settling
down somewhat I am wanting to start once again learning, dancing, and
sharing with others, my passion for historic dance.

I hope to hear from someone soon,

There's a Lady Phaedra who I believe resides in Deodar? If this is the
person you seek I can forward your request to their shire list.

No, I think he want Phaedria d'Aurillac (Kristina Eloisa Pereyra) from
the West? Mists? who did the Pennsic 23 dance music collection.

kpereyra@... is one email I found through Google

The music is available at:

Indeed! Yes Indeed! I've been all over that site and not found
anything more illuminating in the realms of contact information than a
first name.

That site served to add questions rather than reduce them.

Specifically I'm redoing korobuskha and was doing just the Crystal Ball
23 version, but there I find a different version with quite a bit of
differences.

Basically as a courtesy I wanted to get her blessing and perhaps find
out which version she feels is the most current/developed/best and if
she'd have any special requests of me.

I suppose I should ask the Calontir musical populace for their
preferences. I'm sure Lady Conna has reasons for choosing one version
over another. I've also another version in my Lilies XIV Ball music.

I guess I could extend the same question as to if there are any special
requests for changes or such.

I guess I could have made a decent guess at a last name if I'd looked a
little more deeply in the Lilies XIV music and found her credited elsewhere.

Thank you for her contact info (and last name(s)).

Hi there:

Couple of quick (or not) answers -

Christian M. Cepel wrote:

"PnA" is a notation to identify the specific source manuscript, as these
dances appear in several similar manuscripts. My (new) copy of Smith
is at home, but I think it literally means (P)aris (n)ational library,
(A)mbrosio (aka Guglielmo Ebreo). This is alternatively referred to as Pa.

The other ms. at the Paris library is PnD (Pd), or Paris...Domenico.
The other ms. at the Paris library is PnG (Pg), or Paris...Guglielmo.
The Giorgio copy of Ebreo (NY) is at the NY Public Library. Other
mss. are in Florence (FL and FN), Modena (M), Siena (S), and the Vatican (V).

All are hand written variations on one another, but, IIRC, no two are quite
the same. Hence the need to identify which source you are using.

Ah, here it is. My notes list this manuscript (Pd) as:
Paris, Bibliotheque Nationale, fonds. Ital. 476

While I think this is a fine way to go, it is really a question for the
copyright holder, Monica.

Thanks. I'm still looking and will defer to her when I find her.

So, if I was to replace that with

Paris, Bibliotheque Nationale, fonds. Ital. 476

in the notation, it would be a less cryptic/more informative reference
for others like me who aren't necessarily fluent in the specific knowledge?

I appreciate it. Learning, learning...

Many thanks.

I just want to thank everyone who came and played in the music pit with me
this weekend at Chieftains. I counted 9 of us! Mistress Conna, you were
wonderful as always. I hope to introduce a few of the new, to me, pieces
we played to my local music group. I was very impressed with the two young
lords and the beautiful lady recorder players who joined us. The little
8-9 year old boy was a charmer! But to have his Excellency Dirge (Volkmar
to the newer folks) join us and her Grace Acline bringing in her wonderful
cello! (the intro to karabuska on a cello was very interesting and fun!)
It was just a sparkling great time for an old, crippled up, fat rebec player.

I loved the folks who would come up, dance a few steps, and bow to us and
move on. It was a very organic and natural music pit.

Fine torture us.

We were packing to go when the mail came on Friday and my long belated
paycheck was not within. It of course came on Saturday. If we had
been certain that it would have come on Saturday we would have come
anyways, but if you knew how reliable my Penn univ was about getting
checks here when they are supposed to get here, you'd understand why it
was too much of a gamble.

I really really wish we could have been there...... Oh the agony.

I'm glad you guys had a good time.

I had a terrific time! Thanks for letting me slip in and out as I needed to.
Wish I could have spent the entire day there! But it was a nice and relaxed
gathering, and I was glad to join in when I could.

Your Grace Acelin, thank you for bringing your cello out‹wow it sure made us
sound so much better! ;) Pavel, it was terrific to see you back in the
saddle, and I love it when you can convince HE Volkmar to join in the pit!
And Lady Emelye, thank you for making the trip from NE. I know itıs a long
drive, but it was terrific to have you in the pit. Ailsa, thanks for keeping
things moving when I ducked out.

And thanks to everyone who made our new young acquisition, Roger, feel so
welcome. His mom told me that he had a really great time, and is looking
forward to playing with us next time. (Thereıs nothing like getting my *ss
kicked by a 10 year old to remind me that I can never practice enough...)
:)

Thanks, everybody!
Conna

No, nothing special about the arrangement I picked. It has a simplified
melody line, which can sometimes be a Good Thing at Crystal Ball. But
frankly, I try to avoid playing it as much as possible. Youıll note that the
set also includes Petit Riens, which is how the dance mistress appeases me.
;)

And Iım betting Lilies XIV was the last time we played it at a Lilies Ball.
Anybody know? We mostly donıt do it in Calontir much anymore.

Iım trying to track down a friend whoıs a friend of Phaedraıs. Iıll let you

Tonight on Great Performances on PBS (check local listings for time), Sting
will be performing some of his pieces from his most recent CD, "Songs from

The songs are written by John Downland and performed by Sting and lutenist
Edin Karamazov. I really love this CD, and I'm looking forward to seeing the
show.

No problems there. I'm also a player of the whistle, bodhran, and (though not
period)
learning the button accordian. To me, the music (and musicians) are most
critical and
essential for the dance and I'm very interested in learning and finding

it all.

Thank you!!

There are lots of clips of interviews and performances of this duo on
YouTube.... Mr Karamazov is quite phenomenal. Sting.... he's
getting there.

Must be nice to be sting and to be able to make one's first lute
purchase a super nice one (they discuss it in one of the interviews).
My first lute purchase only had 8 strings and I think the sales guy
might not have been completely honest with me. I didn't think that the
8 strings were supposed to be tuned in pairs and I didn't think I was
supposed to play it with a pick.

I haven't heard this played in a long time by a dance ensemble, so I
can't remember where they began the tempo at and accelerated from. I
like the way it flows at crotchet = 120, but since it accelerates, I was
wondering if the initial tempo marking should be perhaps something like
crotchet = 108? I'm sure the musicians can play it at nosebleed speed,
but I've never danced to it so I've no idea what is reasonable. This is
the last detail I need to hammer out before putting it up on the site.

Man I soooo need a newer version of Finale. If anyone knows how to
suppress/hide 3 of the 4 staves in a group in a system (not all systems)
in Finale 2001d I'd love to know how... I don't believe it's possible.
The whole thing fits well on a single page, but if I was able to lose
those three staves on the intro line, it would give me tons of room to
increase the size of the note elements, spacing between staves and
spacing between systems. May have to break into the music school's
computer lab for a quick edit.

I'd be very willing to reimburse you for your media and shipping and
perhaps time. I'm gonna ask locally, but just in case I wanted to ask
here as well. I know I could get VHS, but I despise VHS.

Some notes on Korobushka from the Dance perspective:
As much as I despise the popularity of such an out of period thing, I do think
the 'Tetris' music is some cool stuff to play. As for tempo: I like most ECD at
about 120. For the speed-it-up dances you have to be careful to start it slowly
enough to have some where to speed up to, but fast enough that the dancers don't
have to defy gravity to extend steps. In one measure, the dancer steps and
closes 2 times. Think about walking, stepping once per beat, and you can figure
out what will feel comfortable, slow but not too slow, moderate-comfy, fast and
insane.
Generally I will visit with a Pit Chief before a ball to set tempi as early in
the process as makes him or her feel comfortable. If you will be at Bellwode
Symposium, I'd be happy to sit and do a tempo check with you or you can sit in
on the one the Conna and I will inevitably do before the evening dancing.

Good advice, and yes, I will be at Bellwode even if I have to move
mountains (real mountains, not Missouri mountains) to get there. I hope
to very much be involved and if anything can be done to improve/correct
any of my efforts, I'll surely accept with much gratitude.

Based on the step-close, step-close thing it seems that even Crotchet =
102 wouldn't be too agonizing and would leave a good amount of headroom
for acceleration before feet start smoking. I think I'll go with this
for now unless someone has better ideas and go ahead and publish to the web.

Any chance of doing the older (Slavic) steps to Korobushka? I realize
they're still not documentable, but they fit the music, and they're
traditional (i.e. nobody knows how old they are).

We have some cheese and lunchmeat products in the tray of our fridge
that I think are Traditional.

Ok.... to give this some legitimate content and because I wanted to but
forgot to include it in the previous posting, I'm needing some help with
the clefts in the original.... They are all G clefts, no G 8va clefts,
but that doesn't seem right, so... Could someone who's familiar with
the instrument tessituras make certain that the proper clef is being
used for what is likely the proper part.... I think the top two lines
are soprano by the notation that one is an alternate, but I'm not sure
about the others (except the bass of course which is an F clef).

I haven't added the other midis to korobushka, but will once I get home
this evening.

CAUTION: Mableth has inadvertently hit one of Tsire's BIG RED BUTTONS OF DANCE
DOOM!

"Traditional" undocumented vs broadway legend undocumented is, well,
undocumented to just about the same degree. Attempting to create a case for
legitimacy for this seriously out of period dance by introducing 'Slavic
Traditional' steps goes counter to the goal of enhancing the living history of
our period through dance. This is frustrating and muddles the fun vs period
false argument that I constantly hear.
It is possible that I'm beating a dead horse uphill both ways in the snow here.
If that is the case we can add "traditional" Lindy Hop to our next dance event
because it certainly is fun and I've certainly been doing that a long time too.
In my head, the out of period Korobushka, Slavic steps or no, is equally the
outlier. I'm in no way upset at Mableth, he's just making a suggestion. I'm just
frustrated that this is even still a viable idea in SCA dance with all the
researchable, documentable, knock-your-socks-off dancing available.

Thanks for indulging me in my Big Red Button Rant Folks - Now back to your
regularly scheduled DanceList.

I'm not at a loss per se, but as I'm hoping to be useful, I'll ask.

Does anyone have anything they'd like notated cleanly and midi for
practice exported in the manner done for Petit Vriens and Korobushka on
http://music.shireofthestandingstones.org/index.php?Content=Music

Changes to some existing piece or handwrites you'd like incorporated
into a small file-size high-qual print format?

In Service,

    "Merry"
