Remembering how much fun the ball was last year was the deciding factor in
wanting to return this year.
(OK the fighting, game and feast were all good too). I'd be happy to run or help
run a ball, though if anyone else
who could use some experience in running a small casual evening of dance wants
to try I would defer to them.

Come to Caravan's and have a ball!

Once again, we will be having a little informal ball this year. I would like
to invite any and all musicians to join us at our humble little event.
Currently, the music pit is few in numbers but big on fun! So if you like
music and have an instrument that you can play, please join us next weekend
at Caravan's Ball.

If you don't play an instrument, then why not bring your dancing shoes and
have a ball anyway. In Ivory Keep, there is something for everyone to do.
Why... even if you have 2 Clef feet......oops, I mean LEFT feet.....sorry
about that slip. You can still dance at the ball.

What's that? You can't dance or play an instrument? Well, just sit back and
enjoy the show that is the Ivory Keep Caravan's Ball. I hope to see you
there.

Please excuse the multiple posts for some of you.

Greetings unto the artisans of these wonderful lands of Calontir,

While Lilies War is still a time away…. Preparations should now be
under way. Particularly for the artists and artisans in this kingdom.
I am calling for A&S competitions and displays for the war.
As many of you know we have had a change of themes for Lilies this
year.
For those of you who had all ready made plans with the prior theme
please do not feel you need to change it. We will welcome any and
all opportunities to showcase our talented artisans.
You also do not have to design a competition or display with either
theme in mind.
Please contact me with your ideas and we can start scheduling things.
Please note that competition sponsors are responsible for supplying
judges and prizes for their competitions. If you need help or
information about lining up judges or prizes, or if you have any
general questions about sponsoring a competition, please contact me
and I will be happy to help.

In Service to Crown, Kingdom and War,

Well.

After what I think has been well over a year of trying to get it
together and get people interested, the Shire of the Standing Stones had
their first music night last night!

An open invitation was extended of course to those in Amlethmoor and
Wyvern Cliffe, and anyone else willing to show up. There were 6 of us.
More than I feared and less than I hoped.

We had a chance to distribute some music from the long ago defunct
Stones music group and to learn that not a single one of us can
sight-sing a lick.

I'm very excited. We hope to encompass Voice, Dance Ensemble,
Dance, Instrumental, and Percussion, and whatever anyone else wants.

     Yeah!!!!!

Oh... The talk last night was 1st & 3rd Wednesdays, but I rather hope
more than that.

We don't have a location for dance, but for now it matters not as we're
gonna concentrate on other things until we can perhaps get a site and
enough folks to justify it.

Well... to be completely honest two were drag-along spouses :) One
being the 'husband of hostess', but all are willing to participate.

As you might imagine, scheduling is proving to be a real bear.

Couple of questions.

The first is, does CalontirDance serve double-duty for Music as well? I
think I've always seen musical discussions here, but I didn't know if
there was a list more specifically for vocal and non-dance instrumental.

Second is... I've the Crystal Ball (and corrections) and Lilies Dance
music packets to give my guys, but for vocal I've scanned in the vocal
music I had from when Countess Alix was the head honcho. The question
is.... A lot of it is copied out of copyrighted materials. Like the
Dance Music, I'd like to give it to folks electronically and ask them to
print it on their own dime as for just last night for 8 copies of a
small selection of dance, vocal, inst , & fingering charts the bill came
to over $40*****. What do you folks do. Do you think it's safe putting
it in a password secured directory at an unpublished/linked web address
distributed through private email (i.e., not yahoogroups) ??

The third is more for Mistress Conna, but anyone's welcome to field it.
A while back I was discussing getting this group going with you and have
since lost my inbox. You shared a link with me that had already done
much of what I had planned to do.. I.e., re-notate a lot of this messy
vocal music and then export to parts, both as sheets and as midi. Might
I trouble you for that site(s) again?

***** I was shocked to find that Kinkos is charging $.08 a sheet for b&w
copies. I was relieved to find that there was a price break if you
printed double-sided. Only $.16 a sheet!!!!!!!!!!!! What gives? The
paper isn't part of the cost at all????? Very irritated.

Many thanks!!!

Iıve always treated it as both dance and music, since weıre a closely
associated bunch. I donıt think the dancers mind sharing the space, do you??
I think itıs good to share one list, rather than splintering off, but maybe
thatıs just me...

There is a ton of music available for SCA use; no need to use copyrighted
material and also no need for one person to be responsible for all those
copying costs. I have known some music groups who have found some wonderful
book and all agreed to go out and buy individual copies. But I think thatıs
rare. Why not make use of the wonderful free stuff available?

That last site (saers.com) has a bunch of vocal stuff. Granted, they
arranged it for recorders, but itıs got all the words, too. And itıs free.
(Tons of John Dowland, for example.) I think it would work great for vocal
groups.

And hereıs the Choral Public Domain Library:
http://www.cpdl.org/wiki/index.php/Main_Page

I would stay away from Kinkos, etc. Iıve been really impressed with a group
thatıs an offshoot of the St. Louis Recorder Society, called Easy Early
Music. Itıs run by a lovely woman named Joyce; sheıs dedicated to helping
people learn how to play the recorder. She put together a web page with
music she finds from the free sites listed above (and maybe others, too),
and people can go and download what they need for that month. Itıs very
convenient. Hereıs her web site: http://easyearlymusic.org/

Yay music!

Hot on the heels of yesterday's conversation about the Dance group
serving dual duty for Music (which personally, I prefer because the two
seem both pretty inseparable to me and to have a lot of overlap, and
down down down with cross-posting!!!), this came to the Standing_Stones
shire list.

--- Forwarded message ---
Greetings good gentles all. As you are aware, there is now string
music in our fair barony. As some of you probably know I have
inquired on the Calon list as to the interest in a kingdom level
instrumental music group. I got quite a good response to this idea.
So, I have created a Yahoo list for anyone in the kingdom who would be
interested in playing together at various events. The intention is to
bring istrumental music for it's own sake to our kingdom. If you are
interested in this idea, please join me on this list at
Calontir_Camerata@ yahoogroups. com

Please pass this along to other group lists you are on.

YIS,
Constance W.

--- End forwarded message ---

I of course must join, but I rather wished it would stay here.

Anyone have scoring to this that they especially like? We started
learning it ala oral tradition last night, but I'd like to get some
music to distribute to our group. The version we went through was sung
in cannon and consisted I think of an A&B part which formed the
overlap. Very simple, single melody line.

We had our 2nd meeting last night and things went Splendidly and we had
a lot of fun! Her Grace brought her cello, and we actually sang some
parted harmonies. Pictures here.

anyone wants to see them :)

I notated Ah Robin for our music group.fig

Could I trouble anyone to take a quick look over it and see if there's
anything glaringly wrong with it? Moreover, would someone who is good
with figu ring chords be willing to provide a few for those playing
harmony/accomp instruments?

Thanks!

Heh.. No... I'm not worried about voice crossing and other such
evils. This isn't my arrangement, just one I've copied from something
hand-written. I'm just asking folks to look over for any glaring
errors, or obvious musical blunders on my part (or I suppose the
original transcriptionist, but that's more subjective), as I'm used to
doing bagpipe scores and haven't done anything like this in a while.
This was written in mid & low 4 measure phrases to be repeated, and then
all 16 measures of the high written out and I wanted to put them in a
formal score with the correct lyrics (there were some questions that I
think I've resolved correctly with web searching... Other than that, I
suppose style criticisms and the like.

Here's the much cleaned up original I started from if it's any use:
http://photos.bramblethorne.org/main.php?g2_itemId=1326

As far as the chords, I am not the best at it despite years of music
classes and I know that there are folks out there who can just look at a
score and fiddle around on a piano or a guitar and come up with a lead
sheet that isn't just musically precise, but also sounds quite nice...
Of course then I'm also wanting to keep things simple so our most
elementary of people can participate and enjoy the

Frankly, I'd rather leave my copy of "harmonic practice in tonal music"
in it's place of dishonor on the shelf gathering dust. (I know it's a
wonderful book, but I struggled so...)

Looking back over my original post, it's frightfully obvious to me just
how tired I was when I posted. I apologize that a good deal of it made
no sense. I'm cross-posting back to the dance group as well (a lot of
the instrumental/vocal music side has been discussed on there in the
past, so I'm used to asking there for answers too), as they got the same
confusing message I sent to this list and my response to your questions
could help clarify.

Many thanks!

Greetings one and all.

As the autocrat, Aldheim of Seven Oaks so eloquently announced at Kris
Kinder, the College of Bellewode is one again hosting the Heraldic, Scribal,
and Dance Symposium this year.

The webpage for this year is still being assembled. But at the group’s
website you will be able to find all of the information as soon as it is
available. That website is HYPERLINK
"http://ssmc.truman.edu/"http://ssmc.truman.edu/

The date for this year’s Symposium is April 7th. That is the Saturday of
Easter, but we hope you will still make the journey to the lands of the
College to join us in sharing those subjects which make us strive for
excellence.

Aldheim will be checking the email accounts and building the class lists, so
please email HYPERLINK
"mailto:bellewode_herald@..."bellewode_herald@... for your
Heraldic and Scribal classes, and HYPERLINK
"mailto:bellewode_dance@..."bellewode_dance@... for your dance
classes, so we can get them up on the website.

I may no longer reside in Bellewode, but this event is near and dear to my
heart, and I will be coaching Aldheim at every step for this event, and I
hope we can see record numbers this year.

Thanks for your support, and well wishes for this event.

fallen through, the Royal University is extending RUSH credit to all

As part of the RUSH board, I would highly encourage everyone take

fallen through, the Royal University is extending RUSH credit to all
of the Symposiums taking place in April...which includes this one.

As part of the RUSH board, I would highly encourage everyone take
advantage of this situation and offer to teach.

All my searches are turning up precisely diddly. I can't even find
'mention' of it let alone music & verse.

Anybody heard of this and can at least discuss it's existance.

Sorry for cross posting.... I'm getting frustrated and want to pick as
many brains as possible.

Greetings to all,

The College of Bellewode is extending an invitation to one and all to join us
for our third annual Heraldic, Scribal, and Dance Symposium, which will be held
on April the 7th.

Currently, we are assembling our event's website and the class schedule. If you
would like to teach a dance class, please let us know and we will add your class
to schedule.

We have also been informed that, since the Spring RUSH event in Axed Root is not
being held, all classes at the Bellewode Symposium will count for RUSH credit.

Thank you all, and we hope to see your at our symposium!

In service,

Aldheim of Sevenoaks, Autocrat

Going through music for my group and just noticed that sets 4-6 aren't
actually in the PDF. Was there a second file? I think I can populate
a lot of it with Lillies XIV music, but if there were any edits I'd lose
those.

Thanks!

P.s., why so quiet?

Only the first 3 sets are played live. the rest is canned. I don't know that
anyone works up the music for the tunes that aren't played.

Conrad

This list is almost always quiet

No, I never bother to put together the last three sets. Itıs all done by CD
at that point; no need for the sheet music.

By the end of the third set, Iım lucky if Iıve still got enough musicians
left to play to the end of the set. I dunno, something about practicing
three hours and then playing another four wears them out. ;) They start
dropping like flies by the middle of the second set. Iım blaming it on
having to play My Lady Cullen 20 times... It causes brain meltdown. :)

PS: Just kidding about My Lady Cullen. We like that one. I actually think
itıs caused by Mariıs Wedding...

Yes to both.

It’s the same email address as last year. I am not running it this year,
and no longer live in Bellewode, but I am keeping in touch with Aldheim and
I am pushing him to plug it more. I think there will be 3 rooms available
for dance classes again.

But Mari’s wedding is so light and cheerful!

Like June Cleaver pickled in a bottle of jasmine scented Cairo Syrup.

Hey, is pole dancing period? I bet it is.

Will there be any classes on pole dancing at the Symposium?

Hey guys - glad to see the list being used again.
Just out of curiosity, who is doing Lilies dancing this year?

I guess I have quite a few questions about this gentleman. He has quite
the Curriculum Vitae in the ole' music subject.

At a rough count, I see 14 of the 30 pieces in the Crystal Ball 23
packet are Arrangements, and I'd be very much surprised if Jenny Pluck
Pears, War Bransle, and Hole in the Wall aren't derivations with a very
few changes of his work.

His stuff has fleshed out the majority of every music packet I've been
given (several Lilies and at least 2 Crystal Balls).

I find links all over the web to his site, specifically to his tunebook,
and they are all broken. His website shows these as being available
for purchase in a tunebook.

So... I'm wondering... what are his feelings towards the SCA and it's
use of his arrangements? If I had to guess I would guess that he never
granted permission to use them as they have been used, or has since
rescinded permission for some reason. Has there been non-attribution
conflicts and such?

Can someone bring me up to speed? Am I just imagining things?
