Okay so The group doesn't take attachments and I know that but my brain is
off. For anyone who wants the steps for Saturday Night/Sunday Morn here they
are directly copied from Aphia and Aethelwyn's handout.
Hope to see you all out there doing this one in just about a week. :)

This is a new dance that will be danced at Midnight (whenever it may fall)
during the ball

ENGLISH COUNTRY - PROGRESSION DANCE
Active (A) & Inactive (I) couples
A's progress down the set; I's progress up the set
When a couple reaches the end of the line, they sit out one repeat of the
dance
and then start as the other kind of couple (ie: A's become I's & I's become
A's)
Notation given is one repeat of the dance.

Saturday Night and Sunday Morn (couples in a line) (Playford: 1651)
v1 - Forward & Back a Double – 2x
c1 - Set & Turn single – 2x
v2 - Full Gypsy with partner (Gypsy – circle each other closely)
         Full Gypsy with opposite (M to M & W to W)
c2 - A man & I lady switch places / A lady & I man switch places
         A man & I lady switch back / A lady & I man switch back
v3 - Arches along the line – A’s take hands & go under I’s arch (as they
move up)
I’s take hands & go under A’s arch
(as they move up)
Arches across the set - Men take hands & go under lady’s arch (as
they move across)
                                           Lady’s take hands & go under men’s
arch (as they move across)
c3 – R & L around (end at original place)
         R hand to your partner & change / L hand on the side & change (M & M
/ L & L)
         R hand to your partner & change / L hand on the side & change (M & M
/ L & L)
v4 – A & I Fwd a Double (toward other couple) / Lead out to the side (M & M
/ L & L)
Lead back to the center / A’s take hands & go under I’s arch (as
they move up)*Progresion*
C4 – R & L around (end with A’s below & I’s above)
         R hand to your partner & change / L hand on the side & change (M & M
/ L & L)
         R hand to your partner & change / L hand on the side & change (M & M
/ L & L)

Slight changes were made from Playford in verse 3 (2nd half is arches
instead of casting off) and in verse 4 (arching thru instead of “lead from
each other”). We felt these changes made the dance flow better and easier
to learn. Hope you enjoy. Alphia & Aethelwyn

I wrote this to a shire member starting out learning but got to thinking
that a lot of folks might really benefit from it, so I'm forwarding it
after anonymizing it to the list.

For you Mac users out there, I'm afraid that the program only runs in
MacOS 9 and below, or in MacOS X if you have the classic environment
installed. On my 800mhz G4 running MacOS 10.3 Panther, running Classic
(MacOS 9.2.2), the program behaves flawlessly.

Enjoy

This works fine with the internal speaker on your mac.

Notable points of merit/interest within the program are

1. Midway down in the right hand panel is an Manual/Auto button. When
using auto, the computer will listen to the microphone and guess which
note you are trying to play. In manual mode you have to pick the target
note you are trying to achieve.

2. Next to the Manual/Auto button, when Manual is selected, are Down,
Small Down, Small Up, Up arrows. Down and Up change the the octave of
the target note

3. At the bottom of the Right Hand panel are two buttons labeled "Instr"
and "Ument". When you first install the software, this will show a
shakuhachi as the associated instrument. If you click "Ument" to
advance to the next instrument and continue clicking, you will
eventually reach "Recorder in C", and in Manual mode the fingering for
the target note will be shown, and in Auto mode, the fingering for
whatever note it's hearing you play will be shown.

4. Last but not least, in the bottom left hand panel, where the actual
"tuner" portion of the program is located, there's a window showing the
target note in Manual mode, or the detected note in Auto mode, the note
it's detecting. Below that is a window showing the frequency of the
modern "Concert" A4, which is A = 440Hz. The up and down arrows on
either side of this display will let you tweak it for historical tunings
like A = 437Hz and the like.

There is also a volume meter in Decibels at the top of the right hand panel.

I'm amazed that such a wonderful, full featured and versatile program is
available for free.

Hello! :)

I'm interested in reproducing a period music stand, but I'm not even sure where
to start in my pictorial research. I've been poking through some manuscript
facsimiles hoping someone has painted one in a scene somewhere, but I'm not
finding anything. Does anyone have any ideas to help me as I search? Anywhere
that might be a grand place to look. . .?

Thanks,

It¹s hard to find an example because I don¹t think there are any out there.
;)

In period, ³professional² music was mostly memorized. And genteel music,
like a gathering of upper-class people entertaining themselves by singing
madrigals after dinner, was thought of as a private affair, not performance
per se. There are some great scenes of people gathered around tables, with
their part books on a table that clearly had just been cleared from dinner.
Very cool stuff!

I saw a re-creation of this image at a Midrealm A&S competition once. It was
really something. They brought a big oak table to sit around for their
performance and everything.

Hmmm. That sounded a little too ³glass half empty² and I didn¹t mean it that

I guess what I meant to say is that I¹ve got some scribal stuff that will

I will be hosting a music pit and impromptu ball at March Warden on April
1st here in Grimfells. It will be much as the music at BOH. Same site,
and same music except we are adding a couple of songs. I am hoping to get
our local dance enthusiastic to run dance for me. (though I am sure she
would love to have help.) and all are invited to play music with us. We
had a great time at BOH with this format and hope to repeat the fun.

I would like to get permission to ask for a dance demonstration at our
Faire here in Harrison area on May 5,6 or 7th 2006.

While we are Amtgard based ourselves , our Faire is aimed at all ren
folk and hoping to get as much SCA participatin as Amtgard and other
groups. We currently have 22 vendors committed and several herbal
demonstrations- a drama club doing an abbreviated Shakespeare and
some good musicuans are involved -

If you think the group might be interested , please e-mail me.

Thanks for your time.

Unfortunately, a wedding is going to keep me in St. Louis that weekend, but
I sure hope some musicians get together at Queen¹s Prize. That¹s a terrific
place to have music, and it gives the people who are newer to the SCA an
opportunity to hear some live music and realize that it¹s an option for
them, too.

Dear Friends of Dance,

The Letter of Dance once again needs your help! I am
well past my normal deadline to publish another issue
and am eager to do so, but my slush pile has run dry!
I need your articles, reviews, choreographies, and
reconstructions.

For examples of the materials we publish and our
editorial policies, visit the LoD website at
http://www.pbm.com/~lindahl/lod/

If you're interested in helping out, drop me a line at

any questions.

Also, don't forget that the annual April Spoof issue
is coming right up. It's not too early to start
thinking about satire, comedy, and just plain dance
silliness to submit for that issue. It's always a lot
of fun.

Also, also don't forget that Letter of Dance

Subject: Anybody have a review of this label? && Bawdy Songs
bramblethorne

http://www.lyrichord.com/

I've had a cd for the last several years that I've loved, but never
actually looked into seeing who the group was and trying to start a love
affair with them like I have The Baltimore Consort.

The CD: Lems 8018 Minstrelsy: Songs & Dances of the Renaissance & Baroque.

Specifically, it has the 6 gavottes that were the first thing I learned
to play in the SCA and still remain my favorites.

I'm still not sure if it's a group, or just a collaboration for this
label or what (It's rather hard to get to know a band that's not a band
from one day to the next.)

Ahh... answered my own questions, sort of...

The cd is here:
http://www.lyrichord.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=28

I've finally clued in to LEMS being an acronym for "Lyrichord Early
Music Series"

Minstrelsy is the name of the Minneapolis based group... Here's a quote:

... Baltimore Consort, watch out. You'd better keep on your toes
because Minstrelsy is here!
The Minneapolis based group Minstrelsy! consists of five accomplished
musicians (Nancy Froseth, viola da gamba, recorders, David Hays, baroque
violin, Carole Hofstad-Lee, soprano, David Livingston, winds, and
Phillip Rukavina, lutes) who specialize in historically informed
performances of music composed during the Medieval, Renaissance and
Baroque eras. This stunning recording includes works by Rosseter, Lawes,
Dowland, Arne, Praetorius, Campion and Pachelbel (no, NOT the piece you
think!) Minstrelsy's reputation for precise ensemble work and musical
variety is already well established from their many concerts tours
throughout the US., and is a real highlight of their first LEMS CD.
Combinations of recorder, violin, voice, pardessus de viole, etc., are
supported by a "plucked" basso continuo section of archlute and bass
viola da gamba. The musical fabric is intimate, lively and full of
color. Minstrelsy! possibly the midwest's finest gift to the world of
music!...

So... my questions are... Anybody familiar with the group and the label
and have any opinion of either, especially as regards to the SCA?

... oh... just got a copy of The Baltimore Consort: The art of the bawdy
song off ebay and took a listen... Purcell was a dirty minded fella,
wasn't he? He's a bit later than period (1659-1695), but I'm
wondering... were there many examples of the bawdy song in SCA period?
I remember studying Opera Buffa, and the Chanson de geste, but I don't
recall when they had their beginnings.

Are you a Herald? Do you know any Heralds? Are you a Scribe? Do
you know any Scribes? Are you a Dance Enthusiast? Do you know any
Dance Enthusiasts?

If you answered yes to _any_ of these questions, the College of
Bellewode is providing an event just for you (or someone you know).

April 8th, with site opening at 8 am, in the College of Bellewode
(Kirksville, MO - Truman State University Campus), we are proud to
present the 2nd annual Heraldic, Scribal and Dance Symposium. A day
of classes focusing on all things Heraldic, Scribal and Dance
related. We will, once again, be hosting a Ball to end the
festivities of the day.

Do you teach any of these areas? Would you like to try to teach for
the first time? Do you know someone you can goad into teaching?
All teaching offers, or requests for specific classes, can be sent
to Ldy Esa Southwick, or Ldy Helena Gewolf, at
bellewode_dance@... or Bellewode_herald@...

If you have questions, or inquiries, they can also go to the same
email addresses.

Yours in Service,

Roberto Carlos Dominguez

________________________________________________________________

"Basse e Balli: European dancing from 1400-1550" has a
website:

http://ntc.iucf.indiana.edu/patrick/BasseBalli/

When: 22nd of April

Where: The Shire of Mynydd Seren in the Middle Kingdom, otherwise known
as Bloomington, Indiana.

What: A small workshop and ball with a more specific focus than the
average SCA event.

Day: Classes and discussions on all and any aspects of European dancing
from 1400-1550. Dances from the evening ball list will be taught, and
there'll be more scholarly sessions for the confirmed geeks amongst us.
We'll have a 'sideboard' of tasty dance-sources and articles, including
facsimiles of many of the primary sources for this period (feel free to
bring contributions).

Evening: A feast of delicious 15thC food, followed by a small ball
composed entirely of dances from our
period: stately basse danses, slinky Italian balli, rousing saltarelli,
bransles from Arena and as much more as we can fit! Various musical and
theatrical entertainments will be scattered throughout.

Whom: 15th dances are often fiendishly hard to reconstruct, yet
relatively easy to dance, so there should be something for everyone
interested in this period, from raw beginners to seasoned saltarellists.

How Much: Site by donation. Dinner $5 (please book by 15th April for
dinner).

For more information, to offer or request a class, or a particular dance
for the ball, contact the stewards, Katharine & Ludwig von Regensburg,
at katherine_may@..., or (812) 333 8191.

If you are considering travelling from out of town please get in touch:
I may be able to help with crash space and/or rides to and from
Indianapolis airport.

your humble servant,
Katharine von Regensburg

In approximately one month the time will be upon us for the Heraldic,
Scribal, and Dance Symposium in Bellewode (mundanely Kirksville, MO).

The event is being held in Barnett hall this year, which is a slight change
from last. There will be signs up. It also was in the current MEWS.

There is a list of classes for the event this year, online. The URL is:
http://ssmc.truman.edu/ and then there's a link for the class lists. These
are in a rough stage, as we haven't gotten as many offers to teach this year
as we did last. So PLEASE, if you can teach a class on the scribal arts, or
on Heraldry, check the list - if you see something you are willing to teach
that's not listed, email Bellewode_herald@... and offer it. We will
try to get the listing updated as fast as we can when these come in
(probably once a week).

Also, if you have the ability to teach a dance class (I know some people
were volunteering at Chieftans and just haven't sent them in yet) send an
email to Bellewode_dance@... . We are working with our webmaster to
get the class list broken down into the 2 segments and looking proper. Just
send in your thoughts on classes and we'll make the best set of clases we
can for the event.

Lady Helena and Lady Esa are waiting to hear from you.

Also, until March 15th, we have a special deal on rooms at a local
historical hotel. This hotel has been under renovation and very much looks
like a picture out of the 1920's. It's the Traveler's hotels and every room
has a location theme. Their normal rate is 65 per night. The hotel is close
to campus, and the event. If you think the drive is too far to daytrip and
you want to make sure you have a comfortable bed (crash space is very
limited) make your reservations now for our special price. Their number is
660-665-5191.

In service,

Lord Roberto Carlos Dominguez

Are you a Herald? Do you have any desire to learn about Heraldry?
Do you yern to use your voice for other than talking to your friends
or entertainment value? Do you like learning - sometimes - bizarre
and obscure rules and sharing that information with others? Do you
like to research names, and document their times? Do you like being
up in Court and making sure your voice is heard above all others?

do you enjoy to do Calligraphy? Is Illumination up your alley? Do
you enjoy studying ancient texts and Books of Hours, and sharing
techniques on how to recreate them? Do you just want to learn how
to do preprints in order to help the Kingdom?

Do you want to learn what a Buffen is? Do you yearn to dance, and
prance, and bounce, and otherwise frollic for an entire day? Do you
have that one special dance that you would like to share with others?

Then we have the event for you.

This is the second year Bellewode is holding the Heraldic, Scribal,
and Dance Symposium. The information for the event is linked to the
group's website at http://ssmc.truman.edu

Do you have a desire to teach anything relating to Heraldry? There
have been a few more class additions on top of what's on the list.
However we need more teachers. We have an entire building of
classrooms for this event and are woefully short on teachers. We
strive to have the website updated by early this next week with all
current classes on it. And we plan to email the lists with the
current class information as well.

But we need teachers. Anyone who wants to teach anything tied to
Heraldic activity, or Scribal Activity, or Dance Activity should
email their offers to teach to bellwode_herald@... or
bellewode_dance@...

The date for the Symposium is April 8th. The place is the College
of Bellewode - Kirksville, MO on the Truman State University
campus. All details on the event can be found in your MEWS, or on
the event website (again http://ssmc.truman.edu ).

Please come teach, come dance, come learn, come play.

In Service,
Roberto

I am supposed to be leading some dance classes in April. I have
plenty of material, however I would like to ask which beginner-level
dances are most common in Calontir these days.

Is this at your group or at the Dance, Heraldic and Scribe event April 8th
in Bellewood?

I would suggest you start with ECD and brawls - they seem to be the easiest
and yet not boring for new dancers
Pavans and Almans are easy but often boring. Most Italians are a little
advanced but there a few good for starting dancers.

Try these first for a good beginers selection (I don't guarentee speling)
Petiet Riens
Jenny Pluck Pears
Rufty Tufty
Horses Brawl
Calontir Brawl (SCA creation)
Carolingia Pavan / Belle Qui Pavan
Black Alman
