Which version of Whirlygig???
Long, short or extra short?
my feeling is that the short one is correct but maybe we could take
a look at playford to decide?

Don't hold your breath for the Angus Reel - at least unless
y'all come the the monthy Ceili in Columbia - one tomorrow night even :)

Wahoo a create a class session - this is fun!

1) Heralds in Love is being taught in the Not Period but Dang Fun class
2) I'll incorporate Hearts Ease and Rufty Tufty
3) I dont teach Posties since it's grossly out of period - I'll ask Isabeau
could throw it into the NPBDF class for you though.

Hmm - bouncy eh? Ever liked Gracca Amorosa? How about Whirlygig? Gratiosa?
Picking of Sticks? My Lady Cullen?

Also on the not period but fun track - I bet you'd totally dig Argus Reel as
well as Dashing White Seargeant. The NPbDF class used to be mine but I've
passed it off to Isabeau (less my area of interest now and much more up her
alley) :)

I forgot about Picking of Sticks and Rufty Tufty. Very very fun.

Sounds like an all around good class. I havn't heard of the others
but I know you don't reccomend non-fun dances :)

I was adding ANgus Reel only as a another boing but out of period dance -
comparing it to posties in that regard -

Also I meant elimination in the sense that its not on Calontir Ball lists or
in class sets I teach - not as in elimination from the face of the earth -
you know I'm not as hard line as all that :)

YAY for My Lady Cullen - it's got to me my new favorite contra-type thing -
and yay for Dashing wWHite Seargent - one of my faves in the GOOP category.

Not that this necessarilly applies to Dashing Whit Seargent, but
there is a great difference in my mind from GOOP to original dance in
period style, even if they both were written in the 20th century or later.

Korobushka is the epitiome of GOOP, 20th century (1920's?) dance written for or
adapted to a Broadway show to either late 19th or early 20th century music
which a popular poem was set to.

On the other hand the ECD Tsire wrote a few years ago "Ilyia's something?"
used elements from "1651" ECD so is a reasonable original dance in period style,
much better than a modern dance brought in from outside.

Manshaft Pavane and Heralds in Love are original dances based on period styles,
but use elements not found in period sources so fall in between. "Period style
dances with modern elemets" perhaps.

Other anachronisms are Black Nag (clearly classic ECD in construction, but from
the 3rd?
edition of Playford. My Lady Cullen and Hole in the Wall are both 'contra' style
of ECD, but properly HitW should be done with waltz-like steps and is very
Baroque
in style (and thus OOP, verging on GOOP (true 17th dance has far more in common
with
19th and 20th century dance than pre-1600 dance)) while MLC uses many more
elements
of old style ECD (Set turn singles, stars for 4, heys, etc.).

Dashing White Seargent is sort of a combination dance - it came into the SCA
through
the movie "Tarzan, the Legend of Greystroke" or something like that, and
anything
made for, used by or associated with hollywood is imediatly suspect. Still it
has period
elements, the STS and heys. There are also elements I now recognize from Irish
dance
(the 3 facing 3 and pass through lines) and at sometime all the dances of the
British Isle
influenced each other. If anybody has ony other info on this dance I'd be
intrested.

Okay,

There are less than three weeks until the College of Bellewode's Heraldic,
Scribal, and Dance Symposium.

That being said, any last minute offers to teach anything should be in by the
end of this week. That will allow myself, my co-autocrat, and our helpers make
the full class list and publish it well in advance.

The website for the event is:
http:\\ssmc.truman.edu\symposium.html

The class list is linked off of this page.

Classes are being scheduled to begin at 9, and will continue at 10, 11, 1, 2, 3,
and 4. This ends all classes by 5 pm.

There is going to be a ball after court - timed so that people can go have
dinner.

THIS IS A CHANGELING BALL. In honor of it being the day after April Fool's Day,
we are trying to keep the symposium rather serious, but the ball exceedingly
fun. So plan to come, hang out, and enjoy the time of compansionship with your
friends in the SCA. There won't be an official - after the event post revel, as
all of the locals will be at the ball helping out. This makes the ball the post
revel (at least until 11 pm when we have to shut down the ball and clean up the
hall). There may well be a post revel after that.

Crash space is _very_ limited. My personal space is already 100% booked, if you
want me to check on other crash space for you, mail either of the event email
addresses and I can see if I can pre-plan anything. But this is a college group
wihch makes providing crash space difficult. We do have a listing of the local
hotels linked to the group website, and rates in town are very reasonable.

I am hoping the final list of classes and discussion groups will total:

12 Hours of Dance
14 Hours of Scribal
25 Hours of Heraldry (including Vocal, Protocol, Name, and Device oriented
classes)

We are well on the way.

Oh, what, I just mentioned discussion groups? That's right. Not every class
needs to be a class. I am looking for volunteers who want to lead discussion
groups. A lot of people at intermediate to advanced levels don't need a formal
classroom presentation, and indeed get bored with this. That's where discussion
groups come in. I already have a couple for the dance and scribal, and one or
two for heraldic. We need MORE. Any discussion group topic, related to the
topics of the event, are welcomed and encouraged.

The emails for the event are:

bellewode_herald@...
bellewode_dance@...

These email addresses were made just for this event, and will be gone at the
conclusion to the event.

So please, tell your neighbors, tell your friends. Come share a day of learning
and education with your neighbors in Bellewode. It will be an unforgettable
experience.

The webmaster has not yet put up changes I sent last week as it was spring
break.

I have hoped all along people would email bellewode_dance@... with
their class information. I don't have the final schedule set as life has
pulled a lulu. I am working on it this week it will be done asap. But
since I have to go back through the list archives to get all the class bits,
that just adds time.

I will announce when the schedule is up, but please be patient as I am
putting together both the scribal, heraldic, and dance bits at the same time
into it.

Alright folks its that time of year again! Time to set the Lilies Class
List. That means a call for teachers and by teacher - I mean YOU! I know
we're all raggety from Gulf Wars and trying to wrangle the Bellwode
symposium but hey it's gotta happen.

Conrad has asked that all the dances on the ball be taught so take a look at
that list and I'll give precedence in the schedule to teachers willing to
teach these dances.

I need to fill 5 - 1 hour slots M-Sat We'll start at 10am and end at 4pm
with no classes from 12-1pm each day. 2 hour classes are welcome, series
classes are welcome, discussion classes are welcome - shoot me an idea and
I'll see what I can do.
I will need ECD (Beg, Int, & Adv) 15thc. Ital (Beg Int Adv) 16th c. Ital
(Beg, Int, Adv) Bransles, Almans, Pavannes, Mish Mash, All kinds of stuff -
bring it on!

E-mail me at Tsire@... with your contact info and what you'd like to
teach or talk to me at the symposium. I'll try to have a prelinminary list
up by 4/15/05.

Please forward this call for teachers to any appropriate persons or lists.
Thank you kindly.

Okay the class schedule is up on the website.

http://ssmc.truman.edu/class.html

Also, I think now that the classes are set, we should build a ball
list? I am sorry that I havn't given more input on this but i'm a
little burried with mundane work right now. The ball is scheduled
from 8pm - 11pm, so however many sets we think we can fit in. There
may be a chance to start earlier, but the end time is firm.

Yay class schedule - it looks great!-

Roberto - are you happy having 2 open spots (9am room 1 & 4pm room 2) or do
you want us to come up with 2 more classes for you?

Everyone - since I'm leading a Ball Planning discussion over lunch we could
possibly set the ball list during that time - it would not be our normal
plan light years ahead game but might be interesting as an exercise. Just an
idea and probably not the best one - I'd love to hear comments.

I had agreed to not put any of the dancing classes at 9 am, so Conrad's
class got put there, as it's an actual sit down class. And I'm okay with
the 1 class being 'let's all get together and dance. We might even want to
consider moving it to the 'ball room' if enough are interested in it and
court is going to be there. Just a thought.

If you want to do that, then we can do that, Can we firm that up on Monday
so I can take a couple days and work on other things (I have a major test
coming up on Thursday mundanely and need to focus on that for the weekend)
and I can move that around by the time the event gets here.

Actually I would prefer moving the teaching dance to the
4-5 slot in the afternoon.

Its not really an inspiring class first thin in the morning.

The only problem with planning the ball the day of the event is that the
musicians need to have any necessary sheet music at the event. But I'm sure
there's a way to work around that.

Will the ball be selected only from classes being taught that day? If so,
then I can just prep based on that info. (Is there a list of what dances are
being taught in each of the classes?)

Thanks!

Conna - This is a strong and valid point - The lack of available live music
is the main downfall I can think of for this plan. However - I'm sure we can
put together what is being taught and add to that what we usually like to do
( see lilies ball lists from years past, pennsic pile, and well ... anything
Seonaid and I have begged you to play lately) That might work.

The class schedule lists only classes - not the dances being taught - but
I think I may be able to put a rough list together later today from what's
been out on this list. The class list lacks some dance types such as almans,
bransles, pavannes, greesley, and many SCA pop-faves. One of the points I
intend to raise during the planning discussion is that of balance - so just
going with what is taught that day could pose a problem there. This is my
reasoning for including past Lilies Ball lists or a recent pennsic pile.

I know it's shameful but I could also provide recorded music if there is
something that we're just dying to have on the ball that you all dont have
or just dont like to play. I ALWAYS prefer live music to recorded tracks
but, if we have to, we can supplement with the recorded resources.

Lots of thoughts on this - I'll try not to go too far out of the box and
would be giddy with delight if the musicisan woudl attend the ball planning
dicsussion. Live music coordinating and the view point of the musician are
badly in need of representation here. With the musicians or a
representative there we could make use to keep our ball within the set of
music there that day. Whaddyathink??

That sounds great! If you can, please send me the list of dances being
taught (as well as any that you think might be wanted for the ball).

A lot of the newer musicians don't have past Lilies music or Pennsic piles.
I'd like to avoid making 12 copies of all of that stuff if it's possible to
narrow it down some. It sounds like you understand exactly what I need.

And definitely not a problem for musicians to drop out on a few as needed if
we don't have the sheet music, and you can dance to recorded music.

Thanks!

Well, last night after our weekly meeting, I had the honor of sitting
in on a garb making night. My heraldic garb is almost done. But more
importantly, the students made masks, and other fun things for the
Changeling Ball. The locals are very excited about this event, and I
would like to spread my thanks to all in the dance community who are
making it happen. If anyone needs me anymore this week you can email
me directly at pretzelbear@... or call me at 660-665-6988.

I'm teaching an intro to most things so I'm teaching Horse's Bransle,
Carolingian Pavan, Half Hannikan, and Petit Vriens. I know I'm teaching some
dances that other people are teaching, but hopefully the newest dancers will see
this as a confidence builder. "I know one dance, I can handle the others."

I would like to suggest that anyone who has extra handouts may want to leave
them at troll or some such front table so that someone who wasn't able to attend
your class can learn.

So I've moved some things around (yes- It's been a slow day at work) and now
I only need 1-10 AM class on Monday and need a 2 & 3 PM class on Friday.
Again - forward at will. I will bribe as necessary :)

Are we as a community interested in having pick up dancing this year? The
Shattered Crystal Social Dance is Monday night, The Ball is Thursday night
and the Fireworks are Friday night. So we have the potential to have pick
up dancing Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday nights of the war. I will not
commit all of my nights to this enterprise and don't expect you to either -
it is our vacation after all. :) What do you all think about pick up dancing
- hosting it, leading it, having it at all?

Regards,
Tsire

I finally met some of you at Bellwode. Now I can put some faces with
the names that I see in here everyday.
By the way, I was the short red-head in the red dress.
I had so much fun and I wore myself out. I learned alot.

This will be my first time at Lilies. And since I am so eager to
learn, I will help anyone out as needed. I am far from being ready to
teach, but I will be at classes ready to learn. I saw that some of the
dancers are doing a shift at troll. I would love to help.
