P.S. If you decide on a list I can get up a quick web page for them.

Me! I'll be there. Since I didn't ever quite make it to the Barn at Pennsic, I
promise I'll make it to Coronation to play!

Conna

PS. I really did carry my basket of instruments/music around, intending to end
up at the Barn. Honest! It's Calontir's fault that we're just so darned much
fun. I even got waylaid at Sato's vigil until 3 am. Too much fun!

Hmmm. Well, I have to admit I never get tired of Carolingian. And don't you
think we should do Calontir Bransle?

Hey, another question. Does anybody have a good tape player (or better
yet, a cd player)? I'll bring sheet music and hope, but better to be
prepared. Conrad, you'll be willing to teach, right? I've seen the
Italian dances, but only danced a couple.

I like it a lot, though a good deal of teaching will
likely be required.

The following will need to be taught:
Gelosia
Amoroso
Il Piantone
Saltarello de la regina
Candlestick Branle or Ballo del Fiore

I know I can't teach Ballo del Fiore unless someone has notes
(I might have them or be able to find them today).

The following will likely need to be reviewed:
Petit Riense
Jenny Pluck Pears
Rufty Tufty
Black Almain ** (I learned a cool variation of this at Pennsic!)

Not that you (Katriona) need to hear this but I think I have recorded
music for everything but Il Piantone. Sell list above for source.

Note: Most of the taped music is scattered randomly over 3 or 4 tapes
with limited indexing and there is not enought time for me to make
a ball tape, sorry.

Well, since dance doesn't happen often enough at Calontir events, this will
not be unusual :) What I was going for was dances that were simple enough
to be taught on the floor (and hopefully during the day sometime)

>The following will need to be taught:
>Gelosia

>Il Piantone
>Saltarello de la regina
These, if you don't know them, they're out. Did you say you found the
steps to Il Piantone on-line? Where?

>Candlestick Branle or Ballo del Fiore
These are basically the same dance (and almost the same music. I'm going
to work on the variations that get more people dancing (either start with a
bunch of flowers, or give everyone candles)

I'm working on a tape, but since I haven't kept up with the technological
revolution, my facilities are limited (yes, I see the joke there)

Does this look do-able from a teaching on the floor standpoint?

Not too hard, but have youy seen the meeting schedule?
At least the Lily and Cross are back to back.

>>The following will need to be taught:

>>Amoroso
>>Il Piantone
>>Saltarello de la regina
>These, if you don't know them, they're out. Did you say you found the

I can teach any of these, their pretty easy, just not likely to
be widley known.

>>Candlestick Branle or Ballo del Fiore
>These are basically the same dance (and almost the same music. I'm going

They are obvisouly related, but Ballo del Fiore is considerably more
complex.
I learned it the day before the ball at Pennsic, and remembered it well
enough
during the class, but couldn't remember it well enough to feel ready to
do it at the ball.

>Does this look do-able from a teaching on the floor standpoint?

Genrerally yes, but it depends somewhat on the knowledge and willingness
to learn of at least some of the dancers.

When doesn't it :) If you have any suggestions, now would be the time,
before I get cheat sheets done up. Really, any suggestions at all.
Substitutions galore, I don't care...I have this headache that won't quit
and our computer keeps crashing with "disk full" messages.

There's no way to know beforehand. Cheat sheets are good, but they usually
don't help if someone doesn't know the dance at all.

I really like your choice of dances, they are a little ambitious, (as far
as "new" dances go), but I think that's good. I'd say go with them. If it
doesn't
work out we can always fall back to easier or more well known dances that
you
can play and I can teach - or take requests.

Greetings Gentles,

My name is Aoife Ni Aodhagain and since I just joined this discussion I
felt it polite to introduce myself. I currently reside in the Shire of
Standing Stones in the the Kingdom of Calontir. My home is on the far
shore of Ireland in the town of Galway, the city of the tribes.

Since I am new to this list I would like to know if there are dance practices
sheduled near me and if so, where and when.

In service,

Hello all

Well the schedulers are starting to ask who wants to do what and wend at
Lilies. Now its been pretty well decided that the Ball will be on
thursday night in the grand pavilion. But exactly when to start is still
an open question. Last year I think it was scheduled to start at 8 or 8:30
I don't remember. I remember thinking that it was early enough that I had
to hurry off the field, eat and get ready quickly and we did start dancing
before it was dark. Any opinions?

Also I would like to have 1 scheduled night of pick up dancing. We will have
to see waht space is available for this, I'm leaning toward monday night -
but except for sunday night thats the night with the least number of people.

Lastly I think we need to coordinate the RUSH dance class offerings. Now the
RUSH organization is seperate from much of the rest of Lilies and anyone who
wants can offer to teach dance, but I would like to see classes offered by
many different teachers representing all levels of experience and areas of
the Kingdom. I will probably try to schedule 2 or 3 classes. If we have
enough teachers I'd like to have something scheduled 10-12 and 1-3 (at
least)
from minday to thursday. If possible I'd like to have live music for
some of the classes (in part to get people used to live music, earlier).

The current list of ball and request dances is listed at the end of the
message
and is availavle on the Lilies Dance Web page
http://calontir.sca.org/artsci/dance/lilies-ball/lilies-ball.html.
I encourage all teachers to learn and reteach these dances (the first group)
so
that many people at the ball might already know them. I'm working at getting
all
of them on the web, but that effort got slowed down when I became the
Calontir
web person.

A more general dance page is now at

http://calontir.sca.org/artsci/dance/dance.html

Not yet sure of my schedule. I'm shooting to be there the whole week, but sort
of doubt that I'll be able to because of work (summer is my busy season).

Some of the songs I'm not familiar with. Is it possible they have other names?

Yea, someone out there is reading this!

Speeking of practice - I think I would like to make actual live recorded
(as opposed to electronic) music available for practice. I am not happy
with what I've been able to do on the computer. There are some on my list
I don't have music available to teach the dance to. If it bothers anybody
we could always put on the terms of use that the music is not to be used
if live music is available.

I would like to actually start before dark - at the very least it makes
setup
easier and there are some who just won't/can't dance in torchlight.

These 3 should be available somewhere - I'm pretty sure these are
the names of the dances from priod sources.

This is an SCA dance - it probably uses music from
some other Allemande I don't know which - Its from Meridies

Also from Meridies - I've never heard live music for it.

Could be interesting...

I'm not sure if anyone would bother, though. For Crystal Ball this year, the
A&S competition was to create a dance to match a song that I picked for the
occasion. We made tapes ahead of time so people had plenty of time to come up
with a dance. No one did. I was disappointed.

What are some other ideas that would draw people in sort of last minute.
Wasn't there a competition a year or so ago about spiffiest garb present at
the ball? Maybe another one could be the dancing couple that most entertains
the musicians (or am I biased?).

Conrad, wasn't there some sort of competition at Gulf Wars last year? I can't
remember what it was now.

I was waiting a little to see if their were any other ideas.

I've got 2 ideas for Ball based contests. I would like them
both to be War Points. The first is the now mostly traditional
attendance WP. I would like it to be during the last dance of
the first set. Something easy and fun - Trenchmore maybe.

The second is a bit more competition-like and here I was inspired
some by what was done a gulf wars last year. A head to head
competition of dance performances, one done by each side.
Each side gets to choose its best entry however they want, any
time prior to the ball. During the first break each side will
perform their dance. Results judeged almost immediately.
Non-selected entries could be perfoemed during later breaks.

Preliminary criteria

Level 1
   Performance (16)

Level 2 (8 each)
Music (bonus points for live music!)
   Style (participants having fun1!)
Authenticity (period reconstruction or very period-like original)
   Audience response

Level 3 (4 each)
   Documentation (3x5 index card)
Garb (similar, appropriate to time and place)
   Complexity
   Teachability

Coments?

Hi there,

I've signed up to teach dance all day at RUSH in Oakheart. The morning
will be intro to dance and afternoon will be Lilies ball dances. Anybody
who wants to spell me (especially in the afternoon for the dances I don't
know) is welcome to email me. I mainly wanted to reserve the room for
dancing and get the classes on the schedule. Not that I can't talk about
dance for 6 hours, but there are a lot of dances that I know the music
better than the steps :-)

I'll be there. I'm glad things got on the list. Tammar was trying to
get a hold of me, but I was away at Estrella. Now that I'm back, she's
away and won't be back till tuesday - after the mews deadline.

which of the ball dances do you know the music - maybe we could start
with these.

Hi all

Due to the lead time, now is the time to start thinking
about dance (RUSH) classes at lilies. If things go well
we should have the grand pavilion for 4 hours per day.

10-12 Noon and 1 -3 PM Mon-Thur. If anyone really wants
to teach dance outside of this get with me (OR HE Shajar)
real soon. RUSH will be open on the first sunday, do we
want to have classes then?

Note on Tue and Thur war battles will begin at 11 AM.
The ball is on Thurs.

I would like to get a collection of dance teachers from
all over the Kingdom (and even beyond). The only thing
I would really like to see is that all the dances on the
ball list get taught sometime during the week.
(I'm just talking the ball proper, not the request list).
See the link below for the list:

http://calontir.sca.org/artsci/dance/lilies-ball/dance-list.html

If we have musicians willing to play for some (or all?)
of the classes that would be great.

A topic for discussion, do people prefer to have similar
dances in the same class or have classes with different
types of dances (all about the same complexity).

Please forward this message to any dance teachers who
are not on this list.

Conrad
