Great idea! I'll be there Thursday with recorder and music book in hand!

Tsire sent me the steps and I transferred them to the 'net.

The word document (original) is there too.

I'll try to get dance music notes up by tomorrow.

Conrad, Tsire, Katrina, someone and anyone Help!

Working our way through the ball sets at dance practice we got up to Goddesses.
Which version are we doing?!? 6 verses or 11?? BOTH are in the Dance booklet. My
music is 11 but I don't know how many the musicians are playing.

Conrad, do you want me to include Goddesses in the ECD class? Its not really of
the same style but I can - if I know how many verses we're doing.

Up to you. I agree its style is in left field for an ECD. Maybe as break
between to similiar dances? Or as "if time permits".

I usually play until someone kicks me to stop. I really like the tune, but
tend to get a little twitchy after playing it :-) Especially if the
percussionists are overenthusiastic on the "dum-dum-dum"s (if you know the
tune, you know the part of the music)

Just read the steps. Can the verses really be done in 6 times through the
music? I mean it sounds entertaining to watch, but hazardous to the health.

The steps in the verses are slightly different when doing only 6 verses - both
sexes circle at the same time, both lines behind at the same time, etc. It can
be done, if the musicians don't play at quite the speed my taped music is at.
Can it be done in the dark, on uneven ground, without running into each other? I
don't know, it does sound hazardous (or humorous depending on your point of
view). I've only danced Goddesses at Gulf War and Crystal Ball and there it was
the eleven verse version. But if you go by the booklet your first impression is
that we are doing the six verse version. That's why I asked the musicians - how
many times do you want to play it?

With the 11 verse version you get a chance to rese/catch up on the mor or
women only verses.

Hey all,

The booklet is put together for ease of use both during and after the
ball... I like the 11 verse version but am open to doing the six if that is
the popular opinon...i seem to be hearing that the 11 is the traditional way
of doign things...

As for hole in the wall..it was a conscious choice not to put it innto the
ball. Rowan, if you would like to build a fund raiser aroud it, that is
fine with me I'll fit it in there somewhere. If we're taking votes mine
would cancel yours out witha big fat EK! NO! :)

Thats all for now...Tsire - the ever more convoluted.

Well, a little later than I'd hoped, but..

http://www.angelfire.com/ks/tomes2/Dancestuff/liliesball15music.htm

I have the text below so y'all can see if you even want to go see (sorry, I
took the time to make active links in the webpage, I'm not going to mess
with them in email) If you want the Noteworthy composer files for any of
the Word documents you can view the directory
(http://www.angelfire.com/ks/tomes2/Dancestuff/) and get them. Conrad (or
anyone who can) if you want to make pdf files, I'd take 'em.

katriana

Following are the dances I would propose using different music for at
Lilies and the reasons. There are a few pdf files (mostly off of the SCA
dance page) and some Word documents ('cause I can't make pdf files)

Grimstock
I like the key of G better
Word document

Rostiboli Goioso
The version in the music book is missing the salterellos and movimentos at
the end. I double checked with the dance steps and
the dancers will be expecting to do them :-)
Word document

Dashing White Sergeant
Music wasn't included. Melody only
Word document

Anello
Music in booklet repeats last bars, should not repeat
.pdf (Adobe Acrobat)

Maanschaft Pavan
Just 'cause I made up a prettier copy of this arrangement for Lilies last year
Word document

Heralds in Love
No new music, just a note that we'll be playing the 2nd ((A,B) x3) version.

Rufty Tufty
Again, I like it better in G
Word document

Heart's Ease
The first repeat in the booklet version is incorrect, the music as written
there has the repeat written out. This is a corrected
version (or you can just mark out the first repeat)
Word document

Gelosia
Version in the booklet is (I think) for a later version of the dance. This
version matches the dance as it will be taught (and is
done most everywhere)
.pdf (Adobe Acrobat)

Road to the Isles
Music wasn't included. Melody is the top line. I got this from a MIDI file
and thought it was a neat arrangement (could be
horrible in reality, who knows)

Well, let's hear how everyone thought it went this year.

Were there enough dance classes? Not enough?

How were the ball sets? Too short? Too long?

Obviously the merchant area is not going to allow the ball to use the area
OUTSIDE the Grand Pavilion every year. How did the RUSH area feel? (Other
than the tent stake hazards)

I thought the location had a much better feel than last year. Maybe because
we were all closer together instead of so spread out? Or maybe because of HE
Fernando's incinitrons? I think the light made a big difference to the
overall feel of the ball.

Was the ground better for the dancers than last year? Or worse because of the
tent stakes?

The slight slope resulted in the dancers drifting towards the tent stakes no
matter what we did, but for the most part everyone was aware of them and it was
no problem. The incenertrons DEFINATELY help in this. I would not have wanted
to dance near tent stakes without them.

I think the ball FELT much nicer this year. Although I was suprised at how tired
I was and didn't even make it through the whole ball. I think the dance sets
were just about the right length, with the dances we dropped for safty reasons
of slick grass and tent stakes. If we had included or replaced them I think it
might have been too long.

I wish we had had more students at the classes (its hard to teach english
country with just two of you), heck I wish I had made more classes. But I think
the two to four classes of dance related stuff per day was about right. Conrad
the dance reconstruction class was GREAT, do it again next year!

I heard a rumor that the Lilies Committee was considering making some
incinitrons for use at the war (so that everyone wouldn't have to keep borrowing
Fernando's set--apparently people borrowed them more nights than he got to use

I think it would be a great idea to have light like that at next year's ball.

Does anyone know of a plan-source for those? Perhaps every
shire/barony/college/etc has a crafty person with the resources, and by
getting the plans spread around, the things might become common enough
that each event has 2 or 3 good gentles who brought theirs along.

I wouldn't mind having a go.

Forwarded from Fernando:

Start with a standard 20 pound propane tank (like for a BBQ grill).

Next, you need a standard BBQ grill regulator. (You can buy these at a lot of
hardware stores that sell BBQ grills.) Cheap ones work, but go that extra
few bucks for the middle of the road model. The cheap ones hum annoyingly
more often and freeze up a lot more.

Note: I'm told that some more modern regulators have a shut back feature if
there is a lack of back pressure. If you end up with a regulator like this,
it is tough to get the flame up to full without a lot of work (feathering it
up a bit at a time.) Most of these regulators are for the newer male threaded
tanks (female regulator). Almost all the older ones use female tanks (male
regulator). If you can I'd target these.

Next, I use 1/2 inch black iron pipe for the poles. Start with one section
6' long for the main pole.

Safety Note: All your connections should be sealed with Teflon tape around
the threads before you connect the pipes.

On the top of this pole, I use a 1/2" to 3/4" adapter, followed by a 3" piece
of 3/4" pipe.

Drill holes in the 3/4" pipe for the gas to come out. I put 10 holes in 4
columns (3 -2- 3- 2). I think I used around 3/16" holes. If you want more
height, you could skip the holes and just leave the end open, but I like the
bushy flame effect of mine a lot more than the gas jet effect of some of the
others out there. Drill fewer smaller holes than you think you need, as you
can always drill a few more (or make them bigger) as needed once you have
finished trying it out. But if you screw up all you've lost is 3" of pipe. :)

Once this is together take an 8" stainless steel bowl (mine cost $1.47 at Big
Lots). Cut a hole in the bottom just big enough for the 3/4" pipe (but not
big enough for the 1/2" to 3/4" adapter and slide it over the pipe. Rather
than cut a hole, I used my dremel to cut a star like pattern the appropriate
size in the bottom of the bowl. Then I forced the pipe through, bending the
little "flanges" up around the pipe (this keeps it a bit more fixed.)

You don't "need" this bowl, but I find it a) looks better, and b) helps it
handle high winds better giving the gas a place to collect before being blown
away.

Finally cap the 3/4" pipe with an end cap. I drilled a single hole in mine
to add a bit of height to my flame.

Now the fittings.

To the bottom of the 6' pipe connect a 1/2" valve.

Below the valve goes another piece of 1/2" pipe. The length depends on if
you want the valve outside or inside the boxes. You must adjust this based
on the size of your boxes to put the valve where you want it. I made mine so
the valves are _just_ above the box. (the valves and everything above them
come off when I transport mine).

This short pipe is then connected to one of the arms of a 1/2" "T" fitting.

The base of the "T" is where the regulator connects. BUT, the regulator
connection wont fit the "T". You will need an adapter. Specifically a
"Flare - MIP" adapter. This is a brass fitting. Sadly I can't recall the
exact size, so you will need to take your regulator and your "T" in with you.
This, like almost everything else except the regulator, is found in the
plumbing supply dept. I _think_ it is a 3/8" to 1/2" adapter, but I don't
recall which is the flare and which is the MIP.

With this adapter you can connect the hose from your regulator to the 'T"

Below the "T" on the other arm goes about an 8" piece of 1/2" pipe.

Connect this to a 1/2" floor flange. Then seal the bottom. I have 3 ways to
seal the bottom.

A) Find someone who can weld iron pipe right (it uses different material than
typical SCA armor welding), and have them seal the bottom. - You _must_
check this under pressure. It is easy to have what looks like a perfect seal
that really pours out a _lot_ of propane. I speak from experience. Once you
think it is sealed, connect this to your tank, close the valve that leads to
the top and use soapy water to test for leaks. Or if you are brave just
stick a lighter near it and see if it lights. We did this, and even though
there were no visible holes and we could hear no hiss it still put out
several good sized 6+" flames.

B) Use a tap and die set to tap the inside of the bottom of the pipe (inside
the floor flange, then stick an internal pipe endcap in.

C) Forget the floor flange and just end the pipe with a typical end cap. This
is the easiest but the least favorable option because the pipe can no longer
be screwed down to the base of the box. You could also do this and have
someone weld the cap onto a metal bracket of some sort. This is a lot easier
than sealing the end for a lessexperienced welder.

Now take your hardware and mount it in a box. Don't leave the tank and stuff
exposed. Its more dangerous, and it looks stupid.

Make sure you incorporate some way to stake down the assembly to avoid it
being knocked over by accident. I use eyebolts in the corners of the boc and
run long stakes through them at angles. You could just drill diagonal holes
through the corners of the boc and use sjakes all the way through without the
eye bolts..

Once you are set, use a long lighter and FLAME ON.

Let me know if you have questions. Fernando@...

As someone who just came and danced, I liked things. I think the site had
its problems, but we adjusted (dancing korobushka around the tent, for
example). Nothing could be done about wetness, glad that a few dances were
skipped. Dancing under the tent might have helped with light by reflecting
(not to mention the grass being dried and ground flatter) but I think it
would have been dangerous to bring the incinetrons under the cover, yes?

I liked the dancecard, although I don't understand the notations for the
dances. Glad there were quick walkthroughs before dancing because I had not
gotten to classes (too busy!) and never remember which name goes with what
steps.

Otoshi's son is now a very enthusiastic dancer. I appreciated that others
in our sets helped him to get where he needed to be and he loved the
experience. At first Matt said "I'm too young to dance," and then I pointed
out Katriana's daughter and a couple other kids, and he was quite
enthusiastic.

----= Morgan (glad I made it this

Hello all!

This is my first post here...

I was wondering if anyone could tell me where I might find music for
Trenchmore. I need a good quality version that we can dance to.

Are there any CD's or tapes out there that I could buy that would
have that song on it?

Thanks for your help.

Is it on the Rose & Nefr dance tape? http://rocky.itasca.net/rosenefr/

Of course, both Alban and Katriana carry copies (unless they are sold out).

The problem with finding Trenchmore music is that there seems to be a
heck of alot of versions of music out there that the trenchmore dance
is done to. The most comment seems to be "hunt for the fox", but that
certainly isn't the song that I first learned the dance to OR the
taped song that the groups over here (Three Rivers/Shattered Crystal)
use.

If you want "hunt for the fox" it is available on "Why not dance" CD
from most SCA music vendors. Or try this site:
http://sca.uwaterloo.ca/~praetzel/CD-offer.html
This gentle makes and sells CDs for SCA dance.

What the music the musicians PLAY is I have no idea. Nor do I know
what the song is that is used in this area. If anyone knows what
taped song Alphia used to teach us all Trenchmore I would like to
know, since my tape bit the dust from over use and even hers was a
copy of a copy.

Unto all Dancers, Musicians and interested Folk, Greetings

At the upcoming Grey Niche/Three Rivers War (Sept 20-23) there will
be a tourchlight ball held Saturday evening (Sept 22).
We have lots of incenertrons and a nice paved area to dance on in
front of the shelter.

Musicians are needed!! Lady Conna has music packets for those
interested.

There are three sets of six dances planned. The planned sets are:
#1 Petit Vriens, Official Brawl, Manshaft Pavan, Hearts Ease, Heralds
in Love, Korabushka
#2 Rosti Boli, Horses Brawl, Belle Qui (Carolingian) Pavan, Jenny
Pluck Pears, Sellengers Round, Postis Jig
#3 John Tallows Cannon, Montard Brawl, Black Alman, Black Nag, Ruffty
Tuffty, Hole in the Wall

With both the live musicians and the 'bard-in-a-box' we will also be
able to do requests.

Directions to the Grey Niche/Three Rivers War site (Washington State
Park - the same site that is used for Mammoth last year) can be found
in the Mews or at www.threeriver.org\greyniche. The site opens 6pm
THURSDAY Sept 20th.

It should be a GREAT event with horses, hounds, fighting, archery,
dancing, bardic circle, and LOTS of shtick between the crowns of both
kingdoms and the ruling baronages of both baronies.

Katriana,
If you are coming to GreyNiche/ThreeRivers War...
Does T&T have any more Tape of Dance #4 books and CDs that you were
(according to the sca dance list) selling at Pensic? Even if you
don't merchant at GreyNiche/ThreeRivers War could you bring a copy or
two, perdy please with sugar on top? Otherwise those of us (me!) that
didn't find out BEFORE all our friends left for Pensic (that ToD4
would be out and we should send cash with friends) will have to wait
till Kris Kinder or Crystal Ball to get copies :(

Hi there,

I don't know if I'm coming to Grey Niche. I may be coming and selling, but
if so I'll be by myself (and it's a LOT of work as well as a long drive)
We don't have anymore Tapes of Dance (and the book wasn't out at Pennsic)
What we do have is sets of 9 dance CD's (the "cheap cd's") and Joy and
Jealousy (yeah!) I gave William Redcape all the Tape of Dance CD's back at
Pennsic, so you might ask on SCA-Dance and find out how to order them (and
maybe the book too)

The Barony of Shattered Crystal presents

The Field of the Cloth of Gold, AD 1520
Crystal Ball XVIII
Nov 2-4, 2001 (AS XXXVI)

web site: http://www.geocities.com/baronysc/CBHomePage.html

The year is 1520, and Spain is getting just a little too powerful
off their
New World gold for comfort. So their gracious majesties Henry VIII of
England and Francois I of France have decided to hold a great
meeting not
far from Calais, in France, to discuss a grand alliance between
their two
nations. And since neither of these great monarchs does anything in a
stingy fashion, they have brought almost their entire courts with
them and
are holding contests of fighting, archery, and (unofficially)
pageantry. In
fact, the display is so splendid that it is being called the Field
of the
Cloth of Gold, for as far as the eye can see there is a display of
riches
and splendor, each more magnificent than the last. Or, as Master
Shakespeare will put it,

Today the French, All clinquant, all in gold, like heathen gods,
Shone down the English;
and, to-morrow, they made Britain India:
every man that stood show'd like a mine.
Their dwarfish pages were as cherubins, all gilt:
the madams too, not used to toil,
did almost sweat to bear the pride upon them,
that their very labour was to them as a painting:
Now this masque was cried incomparable;
and the ensuing night made it a fool and beggar.
The two kings, equal in lustre, were now best, now worst,
As presence did present them;
him in eye, still him in praise:
  and, being present both, 'twas said they saw but one;
and no discerner durst wag his tongue in censure.

When these suns-- for so they phrase 'em--by their heralds
challenged
the noble spirits to arms, they did perform
Beyond thought's compass

Come join us for a full day of dance classes, fighting, food, and
games and then dance until dawn at our nightlong ball.
The site will open Friday night, and there will be a bardic circle
on both Friday and Saturday nights. On Saturday breakfast and lunch
will
be available on site for a small fee, and there will be a grand 3-
course
feast that night. The site will close on Sunday at 10:30 am.
Dance classes for beginners through advanced dancers will be held
all day Saturday, as will heavy and light fighting contests. Then
after the
feast you can join the ball, which will go on as long as there are
people
who want to dance or the site closes, whichever comes first. Dessert
will
be available during the revelment.
