Greetings!

Crown Tournament is fast approaching. Our Fabulous Fall Festival is coming
up soon on September 24th. (More event info here: *
http://www.threeriver.org/CrownTourney2012/* ) And at this fabulous event,
there will be an afternoon ball. We will most likely begin at the end of
the tournament or as soon as the dancers get twitchy, whichever comes
first. I'm
looking for dancers to dance as well as musicians to play some amazing
music and for us to adore for their beautiful arts.

Ball list:

Set 1
Ly Bens Distonys
Gelosia
My Lady Cullen
Villanella
Hyde Park
Petit Riens

Set 2
Jenny Pluck Pears
Black Alman
Gracca Amorosa
Heart's Ease
Anello
Confesse

(If this ball list looks familiar, then it probably is ;-) )

Then we'll take requests!!

Musicians please contact Magdalene von Osnabrueck (Maggie the Musician) at
maggiethemusician@... and she can set you up with some music!

If there are any other questions, please contact me at ariel.sarah@... or
my partner in crime-- I mean, *dance*, Lady Alessandra de Piro at
k.pogatshnik@....

I look forward to dancing with you all!

YIS,
Lady Annora Reyner et al

Greetings artistic folk

This weekend at Twelfth Night, Mistress Gwyneth will again be leading those
interested in singing fun MEDIEVAL CHORAL songs. We'll do same songs as Kris
Kinder. We don't have a specific time and place yet. We'll figure that out Sat
morn, so if you want to join our joyful noise, keep an ear open for heraldic
announcement or find Gwyneth or me.

Jan 14 Crown Tourn.-- don't forget, there will be an afternoon DANCE

This past weekend, thee was a ball at Crown Tournament.
There was also a ball at the 12th Night event in Ayerton (the Chicagoland barony
in the Middle Kingdom). I was running the musicians there, and the fellow in
charge of the ball did something I thought was novel and clever, and it turned
out well.

He had short sets: 5 dances each. But the sets were themed: English Country,
16th Century Italian, Basse Dances and Bransles, etc.

This way, people who liked certain types of dances were able to attend the parts
of the ball they liked, and waner off to a bardic circle for a half hour when
they knew the ball was coming up with a set they didn't much care for. And
there's an obvious advantage to teaching several, say, English Country dances in
a row.

I'm not suggesting that every ball do this. But I offer it as something to
think of, the next time you're planning a ball.

So, how did the dancing at Crown go?

Thanks, Christian

So how many sets did they have, how long did the ball last, in eve or afternoon,
how many people danced ?Did they do mini reviews before ea dance, any classes
during day--for musicians or dancers?

Annora and Alessandra ran the dance at Crown, Musical Maggie the musicians (of
which we had 7ish, but were missing Conna as she is newly crowned Princess).  I
think there were 8-15 dancers.  It happened in the afternoon after Crown
tourney, in the same space (so there was already a lot of folks about).
Annora and Alessandra did little reviews at beg. of ea dance (which I like).
There were 2 planned sets and then a few pick ups before it was time for court.
Quite satisfying.

Other comments?  I'm taking notes (as usual) as I am the dance wrangler for ***
Feb 25 Chieftains***.  Maggie has agreed to coordinate music(ians).  As the
event in Three Rivers is our change of Baronage, I have asked Mistress Slaine
and HL Josef aboout any special dance----so the ball will start with Carolingian
Pavan at start of their Baronage.  Baron Ravasz is Russian and loves only one
dance, the Korobushka (HE Kajsa doesn't generally dance) and so we'll end their
tenure and our ball with Korobushka.  (Also, if there is a concensus for
repeating any dance, that will be done)

I hope to have a couple classes late morn if there's space available for
teaching.  More later.

Upcoming Dancing:   Jan 28 Vatavia, Love and Beauty
                                    Feb 25 Three Rivers, Chieftains
GULF WAR-- dances most nites and classes ea
day
Mar 31  Bellewode,  Heraldic Scribal and
Dance Symposium

Any corrections or additions?

Yes! Of course Dancing at Lilies will be amazing! We currently will be
having balls on both the first and last Saturdays of War, along with the
Thursday war ball and possibly another one on Monday evening! This doesn't
even include the dance classes! (which will include at least 1-2 classes
featuring new dances learned from last years Known World Dance Symposium)

So plan on coming to Lilies and dancing the days away. If you are
interested in teaching a class (or know someone who should teach a class)
let me know.

Opportunities for dancing/playing this month Feb 25 at Chieftains!
There will be lots going on at Chieftains, but we are slotted from **1-3 pm** in
the stage area. Each dance will be reviewed quickly just before dancing it.

Ooops. I forgot in yesterday's announcement about Dancing Feb 25 to say that
Lady Magdalene von Osnabrueck (Maggie the Musician) is in charge of the
musicians/music. (Hanne is dance coordinator). Lady Maggie is also the one
responsible for getting the actual music posted with the dances, so musicians
can practice ahead if they want! Please contact her at

Well met, my brothers and sisters, and may these letters find you and your
kin on good health and happy spirits. These wishes, from Christian d'Hiver,

By the grace and kindness of the event stewards for Chieftains -- may they
always have the blessings of the heavens, the love of their friends, and
good chocolate at ready hand -- we have a time and place to sing this
weekend: 3:30 in the chapel. Come all who will. And know, too, that we'll
be practicing some of the songs that we might sing at Coronation, a month
thereafter.

Unto the People of Calontir, greetings and felicitations; more, wishes that
these letters find you and your kinfolk in good health and happy spirits,
from Christian d'Hiver, your servant.

In some ten days' time, we shall all meet in Spinning Winds to celebrate
the successes of King Ostwald and Queen Kaye's governance, and to welcome
the reign of Lucien and Conna.

As befits such a grand day, there will be music and dance. You are invited
to join in.

As Ostwald and Kaye set down Their Crowns and leave the falcon thrones in
the hands of their most capable knights and huscarls, you are invited to
join in a choir, which will sing "Ecce quomodo moritur".

The translation of the Latin is

Behold how the righteous dies

and no one takes notice.

The righteous are taken away

and no one pays attention.

From facing iniquity

the righteous is removed,

and his memory will be in peace:

his (resting) place is in peace

and his dwelling place in Zion,

and his memory will be in peace.

From what I understand, we have several people already intending to sing
the soprano and bass lines. That's great. If you're one of those people,
don't switch. But if you're interested in participating, and you have not
yet learned a line, we could use more heft on the alto and tenor parts.

When Prince Lucien approaches the throne, there'll be a brass fanfare.

When Princess Conna approaches the throne, She would like to hear Cantiga
de Santa Maria #159, "Non Sofre". It's available on page 28 of Master
Avatar's "Medieval Songs and Dances, vol. 2".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Goj44NAIO4o is moving at the tempo I'd like

For those of you who don't have copies of Master Avatar's book,

sheet music with an English translation. (We'll be singing the original
Galician / Portugese: http://www.cantigasdesantamaria.com/CSM159.html )

During the second half of morning court, King Lucien and Queen Conna would
summon various groups to come swear fealty. During that time, They would
like short bits of music. Two pieces might be sung:

Good brothers and sisters,

Herein, find many links to the sheet music we'll be using for the ball this
coming weekend.

1st Set
Petit Riens ~ Phaedria d'Aurillac ~
http://sca.uwaterloo.ca/~praetzel/phaedria/PETIT_V.pdf
(You might note that the second line is very simple; that's a feature of all of
Phaedria's arrangements; there's a part for the people who have just learned
soprano recorder that day...)
Rufty tufty ~ Samuel Piper ~
http://sca.uwaterloo.ca/Hendricks/Playford_new/rufty.pdf
Anello ~ Samuel Piper ~ http://sca.uwaterloo.ca/Hendricks/Italian/anello.pdf
Dargason ~ Samuel Piper ~
http://sca.uwaterloo.ca/Hendricks/Playford_new/dargason.pdf
Tesara ~ Ellisif Flakkari ~
http://sca.uwaterloo.ca/~praetzel/ellisif/tes-ful6.pdf

2nd Set
Bel Fiore ~ Ellisif Flakkari ~
http://sca.uwaterloo.ca/~praetzel/ellisif/belfior3.pdf
Official Bransle ~Christian d'Hiver ~ "dirt simple arrangement" that I've never
posted
Lover's Braid ~ Kasha ~ not posted anywhere I know
Confess ~ Samuel Piper ~
http://sca.uwaterloo.ca/Hendricks/Playford_new/confess.pdf
Black Alman ~ Arianna of Wynthrope ~
http://sca.uwaterloo.ca/Arianna/BLACK_AL.pdf
Gracca Amorosa ~ Samuel Piper ~
http://sca.uwaterloo.ca/Hendricks/Transcriptions/gracamor.pdf

3rd Set
Amoroso – Samuel Piper ~ http://sca.uwaterloo.ca/Hendricks/Italian/amoroso.pdf
Heart's Ease – Samuel Piper ~
http://sca.uwaterloo.ca/Hendricks/Playford_new/heartsez.pdf
Vilanella ~ (arrangement under discussion)
Grimstock ~ Samuel Piper ~
http://sca.uwaterloo.ca/Hendricks/Playford_new/grimstoc.pdf (Team tenor, don't
say we never gave you anything interesting to play...)
Heralds in Love – Avatar of Catsprey ~ arrangement is not posted

Incidentally, I'll be giving a workshop on running a dance band, and people
taking the class will have the opportunity to direct and conduct the evening
band in one or two pieces. If there's a dance for which you would specifically
like to run the music, let me know.

Greetings!

Good Master Christian's post reminds me to ask if any of you find
yourselves disposed of some time at the event, I would be most grateful of
the opportunity to run through the dances I'll be teaching at Terpsichore
at the Tower the following month.

Looking forward to it,

So far, I know I am running the pit for the Shattered Crystal BAll. and, Maggie
(Magdalene) is running the pit for the Beginner's Ball. Is this the Wed. night
ball, or are there 3 balls this year? We want to get some information in the
Lilies book.

I'm also running a farewell Caroso style ball on the last Saturday
afternoon. I'd love live music if anyone wants to step up for that.
