[Below are the first part of my notes from the "Future of KWDS" roundtable at
KWDS last weekend. Because there was so much said, I have grouped together the
descriptions of the two bids in this post, and I will post the more general
comments about what worked and what people would like to do differently in a
later post. --Urraca]

Felice Debbage began by recapping the decision made at Pennsic two years ago
when there were three bids for KWDS. At that time the decision was made that the
next KWDS would be in Bloomington, Indiana in 2011, the next one would be in
Columbus, Ohio in 2012 and then Deonna von Aachen would find a site in upstate
New York for 2013.

Since then, some concern has been expressed about having KWDS be an annual
event. However, Felice has enlisted the help of Laurel Victoria Grey, the
director of the Silk Road Dance Company, internationally known for Central Asian
and Middle Eastern dance. Dr. Grey already runs a dance workshop in Columbus
that draws 300-400 dancers. She has enough Middle Eastern classes lined up to
fill 8 tracks. However, the Middle Eastern classes will have to be done like
mundane dance workshops with advance registration for specific classes because
of class size limits. Because of this strong Middle Eastern component, even if
fewer of the Renaissance dance crowd are able to come two years in a row, Felice
believes the event will not lose money.

Felice has other teachers already lined up for Renaissance dance classes from
among the usual suspects. She is thinking of having the theme be "Anthony &
Cleopatra" to show love between East and West.

The event will be June 21-24. The date cannot be changed. Urraca asked why that
weekend instead of the Fourth of July weekend. Felice said that because next
year the fourth will be on a Tuesday that would be more awkward. She originally
picked the weekend because it was the former date of Origins. She wants there to
be more for dance widowers to do, such as arranging for outdoor fighting space.
(Some objected to the idea of adding fighting.)

The site is the Ohio Union. It is a modern building, unlike the IMU, but it is
very sexy. (She showed pictures.) There are rooms available with carpeting for
Middle Eastern classes and with sprung floors and mirrors for Renaissance dance
classes. The lecture room has a mic at every seat. We can have a cash bar at the
balls. There are a lot of rooms available, including an open dance room next to
troll and a room away from the other rooms where people can rehearse without
being overheard. There is not a connected hotel, but there are shuttles from
area hotels to the campus because of football games. She has not yet checked
into getting room blocks, but she would like to reserve room blocks is hotels at
a variety of price levels. The university is in the process of switching from a
quarter system to a semester system next summer, so she doesn't think dorm rooms
will be available, but she will check. There are lots of restaurants within
walking distance.

The bid will be submitted to the kingdom at the Pennsic curia meeting. Felice
believes the financials are strong. (Pre-reg price will be $60 and at-the-door
will be $90) She is calling it KWDMS 9 to call attention to the music track.
(Aaron Drummond is organizing the music classes.) It is already on the kingdom
calendar as a baronial event. There is a web site http://kwdsix.org (Yes, she
realizes that looks like "six" instead of "ix")

Deonna spoke about her plans to host KWDS in Saratoga Springs in 2013. No money
has been put down yet. The site and date are not set. She has baronial support.
She has some staff. She passed around flyers of locations she is looking at. It
is tourist destination with Victorian hotels at the hot springs and a family
destination as well. The National Museum of Dance is there with space we can
rent. Deonna would like to use it at least on Friday, but it is expensive, and
it makes much of its money renting out to weddings in June. We would be able to
have our own food there all day. Skidmore is the college in the area, but they
already have a dance camp scheduled for the weekend she wants to use. An event
in Saratoga Springs would have to be before horse racing season starts, i.e., it
would have to be in June. Urraca asked whether, if we are not using the 4th of
July weekend anyway, would there be a date when Skidmore would be available?
Other possible sites include a former monastery with dorms, and the Saratoga
Music Hall, which is where Dance Flurry (a large ECD event) is held. There is a
mundane dance community in the area, no belly dance community that Deonna knows
of. The nearest airport is Albany. Need to look into airport shuttles. There is
also train service. Hotels in Saratoga Springs have a "trolley" bus that goes
between hotels and various destinations.

Since this is still at the discussion stage, Deonna said she would be willing to
postpone the event until 2014 if people really feel that every year is too much.
People asked if there were any other possible bids. Urraca said that in 2009
Judith of Northumbria had talked about the possibility of a bid to host it in
Germany, but nothing has been posted about this idea in a long time. The
question could be put on the SCA-dance mailing list for discussion. The
consensus was that the time frame for discussion should be to talk about it
online until Pennsic and then have a meeting at Pennsic to decide whether to put
off KWDS 10 until 2014. Urraca noted that this was the time frame that was used
after KWDS 7 when we failed to come to a decision in Toronto, so using the same
process to amend the plan makes sense. Deonna said that she would have to be
ready to present a bid by January 1. Darius noted that she could look to other
SCA groups in the area to help her bid.

Subject: Re: [SCA-Dance] The Future of KWDS, part 2

[This is the second half of my notes from the "Future of KWDS" roundtable. It is

a much more random list of suggestions that were made for future events
--Urraca]

Future of KWDS, part 2-- What should be different?

Ruffina would rather not have the music track because she would rather not have
to choose between playing music and dancing. This was a controversial
suggestion. Deonna would rather have it. Urraca pointed out that, just as the
amount of emphasis placed on the Middle Eastern track has varied from year to
year, the amount of emphasis on music classes at KWDS could vary. There is no
Known World Music Symposium. We could also try to promote a music event. Ruffina

noted that a big problem with a national music event is the difficulty of flying

with instruments. Is it possible to have instrument rental? Further research
would be necessary.

Someone suggested having a non-class stretching room in the morning before
classes start.

Urraca asked whether people felt the event was too expensive. The consensus
seemed to be that the convenience of being in one building was worth the cost.
Cheap food options helped balance the hotel expense. Urraca asked whether the
dorm option was needed. Some felt it was worthwhile.

The fact that ACCEPS only accepts US credit cards is a problem. People would
really like to use Paypal. Urraca noted that the SCA is very against Paypal.
Someone said that some of the issues Paypal had a few years ago have been
changed. The Society MoAS said she would tell the BoD people want to be allowed
to use Paypal, but she has no financial experience to speak from. Someone else
said that from an IT perspective Pay Pal has security issues. It can't conform
to SCA accounting standards. Canadians are used to workarounds. Can we have a
different system for international registrations?

People liked the wooden floors and the ballroom space. The class size was good.
There was a good mix of genres. People liked that there was new research
presented.

Some people felt that the ball sets were badly mixed. This was to accommodate
the loud band. Some people like having sets that include different styles of
dance, so someone who doesn’t do a certain style doesn’t have to sit out too
many dances in a row. Other people liked the idea of theme sets that are all one

genre. There was some concern that that the ball not be based too much on the
classes because no one can take all the classes, but other people said they like

to be able to see the dances that were taught in the classes they didn’t take.
It feels different to dance in a ball, not a class.

Several people said that class descriptions should have a difficulty level
listed, but that can be hard to determine. List prerequisites, such as needing
to know Italian steps. Someone suggested using a check box system to get
teachers to answer specific questions about their class, like energy level,
steps needed, etc. List the names of the dances that will be taught in a class.

There was some discussion of when to put the more difficult/tiring dances. Some
said they should be early in the day, but not everyone is a morning person. A
bell curve for energy level was suggested. Others said it is better to put
harder classes on the first day, before people are too worn out.

Some people wanted a beginners’ track that was labeled as such. Others felt
that

you should have a beginners track, but that it shouldn’t be called that. A
beginners’ track should include all genres. Step class at the beginning of
both
Friday and Saturday was suggested. There should be beginner dances in the ball.

There should be a one day price and a ball-only price.

It was good that there wasn’t a long court. If royalty want to have court,
suggest that they do it in chunks during the breaks in the ball, and that they
be the Presence during the ball.

Darius noted that it is hard to promote KWDS to the Middle Eastern crowd.
European dance people know to expect this event, but the belly dance community
is separate. He noted that none of them were in the room for this meeting.
Invite them to participate in planning. Having a Middle Eastern track requires
more space. Seattle didn’t have Middle Eastern.

If there are different length classes, arrange them so all the tracks have the
same breaks, so people don’t miss half a class.

The lunch break should have been earlier. People liked the long dinner break. It

was long enough to allow for showering and changing clothes, as well as eating.
The catered box lunch at the KWDS in Seattle was convenient. Urraca said that we

could have had a catered lunch, but it was cheaper for people to just eat lunch
on their own.

It was good to have a passing period.

Greetings Dancers and Singers and Musicians

Last weekend was Warriors and Warlords in Northshield (southwest of Madison,
WI). I had a grand time singing/practicing Ravenscroft songs with the
Northshield Choir (2 hrs of 2 morn's).

Thanks to our own Master Christian d'Hiver who was Orchestra Leader and Ball
Coordinator. The Ball was well attended and I enjoyed flitting from dancer to
dancer in my super swirley surcoate.

If you have opportunity, I highly encourage this event next July !

Sorry I don't know of anyone in the barony there but if you contact their
autocrat they probably have a crash space coordinator. I was wondering, if I
am not physically able to make it this weekend, could you possibly take 3-4
quart sized jars and some strawberries for a strawberry-lemon redaction to
be part of the vigil table for the Queens induction into the Order of the

Sorry to respond so late but preparing for Queen's Prize is kicking me royally
so I have not checked my email for a while. I know this is the weekend
following Lillies but I would love to have Calontir have a good showing at this.
My thought was that all going would pick a group to meet at (or a string of them
if it works better) and carpool/caravan the rest of the way. Just a thought.

dancing, and more dancing this war then I need teachers (which means you)! I am
looking for anyone interested in teaching a dance class, or several this coming
war. I also know that a lot of you were able to attend the Known World Dance
Symposium this past year. Lillies War is an excellent place to teach/try out
new dances that haven't been danced in Calontir before.

I would like to see a wide range of classes from basic/beginning to intermediate
and advanced throughout the entire week. If you have never taught a dance class
before, this is an excellent opportunity to give it a shot. If you have a crazy
idea for a dance class that you would like to see, let me know! or If you (or
your group) would like to host a ball sometime during the war, I can work with
you to get that scheduled!

If you have any questions or comments, please let me know. I look forward to
hearing from you,

  ~Lady Alessandra de Piro

Hi again (my finger slipped)

Yay for dancing. 6 months til Lilies. Fun. I will be teaching 2 -3 Kids
Dancing classes at the children's area. I could perhaps do an adult class as
well. Plans for Shattered Crystal's Monday eve dance? At this time, Master
Philippe is unable to attend Lilies.

In the mean time, there will be dancing at Crown Tourney Jan 14, and at
Chieftains in Feb (both in Three Rivers). And of course, you can have a Ball
almost every nite at Gulf Wars !

slightly OT: there will be Medieval Choral singing at Kris Kinder led by
Mistress Gwyneth Espicier. Email her for copies of the music.

This call for classes was sent to the SCA dance list, but I want to bring it to
the attention of kingdom lists as well. Note that this is a Dance *and Music*
Symposium. Music classes are not limited to dance music. Past topics have
included period notions of rhythm, period vocal technique, an instrument
"petting zoo", etc. This is also a good venue for theoretical topics like the
politics of dancing, the connections between dancing and fencing, etc.

Ohio)

Unto the dance enthusiasts of the Known World, I send greetings!

This missive stands as the Official Call for Teachers for the Ninth
Known World Dance and Music Symposium. The event is hosted by the
Barony of Middle Marches, and will be held Thursday, June 21, through
Sunday, June 24, in Columbus, Ohio. As the primary coordinator for the
European Dance division, I invite you to send class and lecture
proposals dealing with the topic of dancing in Europe before the year
1652 C.E. Newer teachers are most welcome to submit proposals; feel
free to e-mail if you have questions or concerns. Please send a brief
paragraph detailing what your proposed classes will entail, thinking
about necessary prerequisites, the strenuousness of the class, and the
names of dances that will be taught, if applicable. If you're
absolutely certain that you want to teach, an early proposal
submission is best. Teaching slots are limited, and I would like for a
wide variety of teachers to be able to contribute.

Deadlines for KWDMS 9:

January 15th, 2012: Class proposals due.

March 1st, 2012: Compendium materials due. (We are doing a serious
printed book, compiled by an editor, for the compendium, and it would
be a great souvenir to have your work in print. Please do your best to
get your materials in on time to avoid missing out on this
opportunity.)

March 7th, 2012: Pre-registration opens.

May 7th, 2012: Pre-registration closes.

Event Details:

The event will feature open dancing on Thursday night, full tracks of
classes on Friday and Saturday, and a shortened track on Sunday. The
Friday evening ball will be antiquity themed, based on the story of
Antony and Cleopatra. There will be a costume contest, and dancers
interested in getting a bit more festive can wear either clothing from
antiquity or what people in the later periods *thought* people wore
during antiquity. We will also have a cocktail hour on an outdoor
patio prior to this revel.

For a totally different feel, Saturday evening's revel will feature a
full-scale court masque titled "The Masque at Coleorton, or, The
Farewell to Faeries," complete with a forced prospective set based on
Inigo Jones's original designs. The masque will be broken up into
pieces over the evening, with the dancers attending the ball becoming
an impromptu chorus in the show. There will also be 18 slightly more
involved chorus roles (3 separate choruses of fairies, women, and men)
in the show, and these roles will be cast earlier during the event,
likely on Friday. If you'd like to be a chorus performer (dance, plus
nonverbal acting), there will be a class for you to attend on Friday
and/or Saturday. (For those who are strictly interested in the regular
dancing on Saturday night, I assure you that there will still be the
same amount of dancing you would normally expect from a ball. The
masque, in its entirety, runs about 20 minutes and will be broken up
over the evening. The acting sections will essentially serve as breaks
between sets.)

Finally, Sunday afternoon will include a Caroso Ball featuring the
amazing tunes of Istanpita. It'll be a great time, even while you
aren't dancing!

For more information, check out http://www.kwdms9.com.

I look forward to hearing from many of you soon, and as always, good
dancing to you!

The Honorable Lady Felice Debbage
Barony of Middle Marches
Middle Kingdom
