Greetings.

I don't anticipate there being any merchants at the regional dance practice,
but
I can suggest a few useful cds that you can order reletively cheaply online.

The cheapest option is to go to the SCA Music and Dance Page (sorry, I lost my
book marks, but if you search for SCA Music and Dance Page on Yahoo it should
pop up). Eric Praetzel and Greg Lindahl have about a dozen copyright free cds
that they will copy for you for $3 (some of them have a few dollars copyright
added to that). If you have questions on specific disks I'd be happy to
answer,
but in general, all of the non-synth disks are reasonably useful, especially
for
a new group.

If you have a little bit more money to spend, I recommend the Musica
Subterranea
cds. They're an SCA band and they've put out two cds, the first (self titled)
has a fairly basic mixed rep and the second has some more basic dances and
some
more advanced ones. I've lent out my cds today, but I'll have them back this
afternoon and will post a track listing if you'd like, and an e-mail address.
They run around $15 each (I forget exactly).

I have other commercial cd recommendations. Let me know if you're interested
and I'll dig through my cds when I get home this afternoon.

And of course feel free to track me down at RDP. I"ll be the one running
around
like a maniac!

Greetings, missed you at Kris Kinder - and no one seemed to know
who you were.

I pretty much totally agree with Katherine, but do have some specifics.

>The cheapest option is to go to the SCA Music and Dance Page

http://sca.uwaterloo.ca/~praetzel/sca-music.html

>but in general, all of the non-synth disks are reasonably
>useful, especially for a new group.

By all means you can order some of the disks, but if you need stuff
quick and have the right equipment, you can also download and
record to tape - ask if thats the way you want to go.

>If you have a little bit more money to spend, I recommend the
>Musica Subterranea cds.

I also recommend their discs and can give you their webpage.

http://www.musicasubterranea.dhs.org/

I think the first one is better for a wide variety of styles
and partially due to its existance more of these are done here.

Though, Katherine, I'm glad to have some music for Dolce Amoroso Fuoco
now.

Sadly I won't be at RDP, I'll be at Estrella (hopefully anyway, work is
being difficult).

I don't know why I didn't think to post this here until Conrad
suggested it - Guess that's why he's about to become a Laurel :)

Below is some information about this years Cheiftains. Conrad will
be elevated and we will be having a Changlings Ball directly
following feast. Please, see the information on the Cheiftains event
below.

The VERY TENATIVE dance list for the Cheiftains Changlings Ball is:
Karobushka, Picking up Sticks, Petit Rienze, Jenny Pluck Pears,
Horses Brawl, Mannschaft Pavanne, Road to the Isle. We would also
like to include Conrad's favorite dance but he's gone off to war so
we can't ask him right now. After that we will take requests if
there are enough people interested and if the autocrate and site
clean-up steward allows (I'm not sure when we have to be out of the
hall).

Please remember that this a _very tenative_ list - I haven't checked
my tapes or with the musicians or ect. Alot will hopefully be
finalized this Thursday. I will certainly post any finalized info.

Cheiftains Info!!

I realize everyone is focused on Estrella right now, but Chieftains
follows just after and the staff of Chieftains wish to let everyone
know we are planning on a really fun event at our NEW, bigger site!
There are some twists to this year's Chieftains due to its theme:
Carnival at Chieftains (it's the last event before Lent - how could
we resist! :-) )

Fighters: ANY list legal mass weapon will be acceptable for the
tourney. Novel weapons are encouraged and I think there may even be
a prize. However, since all of us here immediately came up with the
same idea for a novel mass weapon, we ask that you remember that this
is a family show.

The A&S competition is masks in any medium - cloth, clay,
gingerbread, ect. Have fun! Be Creative!
There will of course be Shopping, Games, and all the other standard
fun things we do at Chieftains. Oh, and the rumor is that the fund
raiser will be something about indulgences from Pope Joan (sorry, we
couldn't track down Brother Luvaducki ;) ).

Changelings Feast: Fits with the theme don't you think? Please see
the letter below from the coronet. Please come and have fun with us.
Borrow your lady's houpalond or your lord's armor and be someone (or
something) else for the night! There are Prizes too!
As for the feast menu, Master A's in charge - you know it will be
good.
If you have dietary restrictions PLEASE contact him BEFORE Saturday
morning. I don't know the whole menu but I know it is very heavy on
the meat (again that Carnival theme thing). In fact I think there is
only one or maybe two vegetables.

Changelings Ball: Gee make a Dance Laurel, have a ball. Seems
appropriate. I don't have a dance list yet and I'm not sure if it is
going to be tapes or live music. Plus, you can dance and still go to
the post revel - it is only 2 blocks from the site! With the post
revel so close you can dance and not miss any of the fun singing.
Twice the fun for one low price!

Post Revel: It's at Master A's of course. Leave your car at the
site and walk to post revel or leave your car at Master A's and walk
to site!

Please, pass this on to anyone who might be interested. We are all
looking forward to seeing you at Chieftains!!

In Service,
Rowan and the staff of Chieftains

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Letter from the Coronet of Three Rivers:

What is Changelings?

Years ago, Changelings was a traditional feast held in the Barony of
Three Rivers. Gentles would attend the daytime activities as their
usual persona and participate in tournaments, A&S competitions and
various traditional SCA activities. For feast, however, something
mystical would happen. The gentles attending would sneak off and
change into someone or something else.

Some chose to change into mythical beasts, historical characters or
even deities. While some chose to impersonate someone they knew in
the SCA, or to be the embodiment of a pun or joke. Really, the sky
was the limit, and the good gentles of those long-ago Changelings let
their imaginations soar. We ask you to let your imagination take wing
for this yearís Chieftains, as we bring back the Feast of the
Changelings. Is it just a costume party? Well, sure, if you want to
look at it that wayóbut a costume party SCA style!

Why have we chosen to bring it back?

For starters, it was fun. But the reason we brought it back this
year, is because it really blends with the spirit of Mardi Gras and
Carnivale that we chose as our theme for this yearís Chieftains. As
the season of Lent drew nigh, the people of Christian Europe would
hold festivals and celebrations. Lent is a time of fasting and
sacrificeóMardi Gras is a time of indulgence and more indulgence.
Masked parades, costumed balls and other such revelry were extremely
popular. We hope you decide to join us in the fun, and come up with a
clever costume or mask.

Will there be prizes?

Most certainly!! During the day your mask can be judged in our mask
contest (although this contest is not restricted to masks that can
actually be worn). And at feast, several prizes (in categories to be
announced) will be given out for exceptional costumes.

Is there any limit?

Please remember that this is a family show. Any bawdiness must be
subtle. Nothing that would get you arrested on a city street please.

Are we looking forward to seeing the fruits of your imaginations?

Heck yes!!!

In the spirit of Mardi Gras,

Hirsch and Meredydd

Looks like it will be tapes and CDs.
Looks like the dance list will be Karobushka, Picking up Sticks,

Road to the Isle.
After that we will take requests if there are enough people

This could still change - nothing is set in stone.

Feel free to ignore me, since I almost certainly won't be able to make it down
(ah, the joy of being in my last semester of undergrad), but three of the
seven
dances (Korobushka, Mannschaft, and Road to the Isles) are not actually period
dances (allowing the two ECD to be counted as period). My suggestion would be
to try to use as many period dances as possible, especially considering that
it's a ball in honor of Conrad's Laureling (right?). Just my two cents (I
know
I'm fighting an uphill battle).

Well, I'm still trying to find someone to share a ride with (otherwise I
have an awfully long drive by myself in a minivan with no money), but we're
working on a "kirtle" to wear under the houppelande that Conna made me and
my dance music is all packed. My fingers are usually ready to go. So you
should have at least Conna and me there.

Very few dances "require" hopping. Actually, few dances "require" much
more than enjoying yourself. Anytime the teacher says "hop", just
substitute "pause" and smile r-e-a-l big and pretty. Maybe bob on your
toes briefly for effect. Unless someone specifies differently, we're doing
social dance, not performance dance and it only works if people get out on
the floor and socialize :-)

Hey Conrad
Post the wording on your scroll!

Well soon the whole thing will be on line, but for now ...

We, Lyriel, the Lady by the Lily marked, and Fernando, the Ritter by the
Falcon armed; by sword, law, and custom serving the people of Calontir as
their Sovereigns, and the Land of the Falcon as its Lady and Lord, do greet
all bound to Us, and order these words to be accredited in all places of
honor.

As the Chivalry defends the just and ancient freedoms of Our folk, and the
Pelikan renders all things possible in service, so too do Our artisans and
entertainers enrich Our subjects. It is both Our duty and Our delight to
paint in brightest colors, and to deck with gold and precious Honors, those
who by their efforts have jeweled Our courts and halls in seemly merriment.

Such a one is Conrad Martin von Kassel, who has by the disport of dancing

First, THANK YOU to the Conna and the musicians who provided music on literally
NO notice. I had tapes but this was much nicer (and since the only plugs were
all the way across the hall and me with my little boom box, at least this way
you could hear the music).

Also thank you to Conna and Conrad for taking over the running of the ball when
my duties of quartermaster and dance mistress collided (note to self - do not
volunteer to be two places at the same time).

I think the ball went well, I like it when we can encourage even just a little
bit of dancing at an event. As for questions/comments that came up on this list
before the ball...

>>three of the seven dances (Korobushka, Mannschaft,

I know they are OOP but nearly everyone knows Korobushka and likes to do it. I
figure using it to open a ball is a good way to get everyone out on the dance
floor, and hopefully they will stick around after. Mannschaft is HRM favorite
dance.

>>and Road to the Isles are not actually period
>>And let's not forget that we probably aren't doing Road to the Isles
>>but Scotland the Brave.

True but everyone knows it as Road to the Isle (those that don't know it as
Scotland Depraved that is ;)) Again, I view this like Karobushka - get them out
on the floor having fun and maybe they will stick around.

>>it's a ball in honor of Conrad's Laureling (right?).

Not specifically. It was a throw back to the Changlings Feast and Ball that B3R
used to do. At the time we planned it (back before Xmas cause flyers had to be
sent to the Mews) we didn't know where or when Conrads elevation would be - that
it just worked out that well was serendipitous.

>Those sound like fun.........too bad I can't dance..........are there any
dances that don't require hopping?????

Most dances don't actually. I know I gave Belle a tape of dance tunes for
Bellewood - she should be able to teach some of them (you are in Bellewood
right?)

>>Very few dances "require" hopping. Actually, few dances "require" much more
than enjoying yourself. <snip> Unless someone specifies differently, we're
doing social dance, not performance dance and it only works if people get out on
the floor and socialize :-)

Very well said MiLady! I will teach the fancier moves if people want them (those
that I can do that is) but I always tell my dancers "if you end up in the right
place by the end and haven't killed anyone and have had fun - you did it just
fine" The ONLY time I am a Dance-Nazi about the steps, music, garb or anything
is if it is a performance for a demo or for the crown.

I hope everyone had fun at Cheiftains Changlings. I will see some of you at
Gulf Wars (my first OoK War!) where it looks like they have some good dancing
planned. Otherwise I guess I'll see you at coronation or Lillies.

Hi all

Tsire has got the ball list together, and will
soon have music, steps and even CDs available soon.

I have put most of this on the web at the lilies site
http://calontir.sca.org/lilieswar/artsci/artsci.html#dance
go check it out. We still need some tune and music files.

The next major part of this is my thing. We need teachers
for the RUSH classes. The good news, no classes before 10 AM!
And the classes start the first weekend.

I would like to run classes 10-12 and 1-3 everyday, starting
at either noon on saturday or 10 on sunday. Ending either
at 3 on thursday or friday.

How did the Friday classes go last year?

Now the bad news, Tsire definately and I probably will be going
to the Known World Dance Symposium, which occurs the first
weekend of Lilies. I will be gone until tuesday evening
ans Tsire will be gone at least that long. So if anyone has
ever wanted to teach a class here's your chance. 3-4 days
where we'll be down 2 people.

As for the classes I don't ask much. I would like every
dance on the ball list to be taught at least once.
Don't feel like you can teach a 2 hour class? Pick your
best two dances and share them with your friends. Don't
think that will take even an hour - get together with
a friend and teach 2 dances each. RUSH classes should
be an hour long.

Also needed are non-traditional classes, dancing with style,
dancing to live music, theory, history etc.

I do plan to do a ball review class on thur afternoon and
I think I (and maybe Tsire) will put together a class
on all the neat stuff we learned at KWDS either wed or
thur morning.

So please, figure out your schedules, take a look at
the dance list and contribute where you can.
Lilies war dancing needs you!

Thanks again

Conrad

Hi there,

Christian d'Hiver was nice enough to send me a copy of the music for Lilies
and I have a few questions.

Could we possibly play Grimstock and Rufty Tufty in G?

Rostiboli and Gelosia are missing the ends of the dances if we are doing
the versions out of Joy and Jealosy. Are we doing different versions?

Anello shows a repeat of the last section. I'm not used to that repeating.
Are we doing the repeat the music shows?

Hearts Ease shows the first part repeating, but that will make 4 times
through the "verse" part. Are we doing the dance differently?

Dashing White Sergeant and Road to the Isles aren't included, not a
problem, 'cause I've got sheet music. Are we doing Road to the Isles or
Scotland the Brave?

Info on obtaining packets is available on the Lilies web site on the dance page.
Lady Sarah (Tsire?) is in charge. Hope this helps.
