Unto the dance and music communities of Calontir, greetings and salutations;
more, wishes that these letters find all of you and your kinsfolk in good health
and happy spirits, from Christian d'Hiver, your servant.

For some reason, there are going to be a lot of musicians and dance enthusiasts,
from several kingdoms, coming to the Raid or Trade event in Coeur d'Ennui on
July 17th. The event stewads have agreed that it would be a pity and a shame if
there weren't a ball.

So, there's going to be a ball a little while after court. We have a shelter
with a good floor and lighting, if we wish to continue dancing after the sun
sets.

At this point, we're still assembling the team of dance shepherds. If you would
like to shepherd a set, or if you are a musician who would like advance copies
of the sheet music, speak up, and we will make that happen.

Hurray! A ball at the event is a terrific idea! And while we're discussing
musicians gathering, any musician interested in playing some background
music during the day's vigil, please drop me a note privately.

I hope everyone on the list will make an effort to be at this event, so we
can all celebrate the elevation of HL Christian d'Hiver to the Order of the
Laurel together. It should be a grand day!

If a lot of musicians are going to be together perhaps this would be a good
chance to ask Matherin and the CalonSound project to do a recording?
I know the dancers would REALLY like a recording of
1) lover's braid
2) lovely nymph
3) the rosti boli version that you've been doing lately - I think Christian
arranged it? - the one played at lilies
4) calontir bransle
5) bobbing joe (AA, 16xb)
6) hit or miss (playford) if someone has an arrangement of it

Dancers -- are there any others we need music for classes and practice?

Unfortunately I wont be at raid and trade :-( and can't coordinate this.

So, for Raid or Trade, the ball sets are currently:

SET ONE:

Rufty Tufty - same rules in a new dance, repeat the dance
Sellinger's Round - likewise
Bizzaria d'Amore
Anello

SET TWO
Pavanne and Galliarde
Amoroso
Jenny Pluck Pears
ly bens distonys
Heralds in Love
Gelosia
Confesse
My Lady Cullen

SET THREE
Ballo del Fiore
Gracca Amorosa
Lovely Nymph
Gelosia
Scotch Cap
Rostiboli Goioioso

We're working to have packets of sheet music ready for any ball musicians by

OK I must say I rather like all the dances on this list; some notes follow

SET ONE:
Petit Riens
Official Bransle - keep the advisories brief
Black Almain - repeat the dance
** Repeat how? Traditional is to have 4 continuous repeats of the pattern done
as one dance
Black Nag - emphasize the rules of English Country, repeat the dance
** This one goes well either just once or 3 times, with couples switching
position each time
Rufty Tufty - same rules in a new dance, repeat the dance
** this dance involves a lot of spinning, if done a my preferred tempo,
repeating it may end up with many dizzy dancers
Sellinger's Round - likewise
** 3 verses or 4?
Bizzaria d'Amore
** unless we have a class during the day, this would need to be taught, a quick
run through is a 5 minute minimum, probably closer to 10
Anello

SET TWO
Pavanne and Galliarde
Amoroso
Jenny Pluck Pears
ly bens distonys
Short or long (referring to the length of each repeat)?

Heralds in Love
Gelosia
Confesse
My Lady Cullen

SET THREE
Ballo del Fiore
Gracca Amorosa
Lovely Nymph
Gelosia
** again? It's in the second set; perhaps with the ladies active?

Scotch Cap
Rostiboli Goioioso
Gratiosa
Heart's Ease
Spero
** It might be preferable to end with something more people know and a couple
dance for the last one of the evening, move Rostiboli Goioioso to the last
dance?

What type of area will the dance be held in with what type of lighting. The
dances in the last set that need to be taught have footwork that will be
difficult to see in a dark environment.

Master Conrad,

I'm makin' up most of this. There's lot of people in atendance who are
smarter than me on the topic of SCA dance balls, and I'm trying not to carve
too much in stone.

The objective of the first set is to make it welcoming for new dancers and
non-dancers who are game to try something new. I'd wager that everybody
here has spoken with people who've said that dance is too difficult to
learn, and the most articulate of them have observed that, as soon as they
think they've more-or-less gotten the hang of one dance, the ball moves on
to another. They're always *learning* the current dance, and never
*dancing*. So, I assembled the first set with the intent to include dances
of simple to moderate complexity, that allowed people to meet one another,
and that continued on long enough so that new feet on the floor could get
the hang of a dance, and there would still be some of it left to do.

Black Almain - repeat the dance
** Repeat how? Traditional is to have 4 continuous repeats of the pattern
done as one dance

Four times is fine. I've also seen it with only two.

Black Nag - emphasize the rules of English Country, repeat the dance
** This one goes well either just once or 3 times, with couples switching
position each time

Either twice, or three times.

Rufty Tufty - same rules in a new dance, repeat the dance
** this dance involves a lot of spinning, if done a my preferred tempo,
repeating it may end up with many dizzy dancers

Then let's do it twice, at your tempo the second time.

Sellinger's Round - likewise
** 3 verses or 4?

Everybody dances this with four verses. (It may be the case, as Mistress
Katriana asserts, that everyone is wrong. If so, we'll continue the
tradition of being wrong.)

Bizzaria d'Amore
** unless we have a class during the day, this would need to be taught, a
quick run through is a 5 minute minimum, probably closer to 10

I don't know that there'll be time or space for formal classes during the
day. In a nod to the dance community, not everything in the first set needs
to be simple, tedious, or English. Bizzaria might just end up danced
without preamble, or a short reminder for people who already know it.
That's okay, too.

ly bens distonys
**Short or long (referring to the length of each repeat)?

We'll have guests from Northshield, but they don't dance ly bens, so we
should follow common Calontir custom.

Gelosia
** again? It's in the second set; perhaps with the ladies active?

No, that's my mistake. As Lady Azenari observes, this set is long anyways,
and doesn't need another dose of Gelosia. Having said that, I don't see any
reason the dance in the second set couldn't be repeated with the women
active.

Spero
** It might be preferable to end with something more people know and a
couple dance for the last one of the evening, move Rostiboli Goioioso to the
last dance?

Sounds good to me.

**What type of area will the dance be held in with what type of lighting.
The dances in the last set that need to be taught have footwork that will be
difficult to see in a dark environment.
I'm not sure. I believe we'll end up in a lit, covered pavillion-type area.

To those musicians attending Raid or Trade this weekend, here's the list of
downloadable sheet music for the ball. We understand that many musicians
would also like to dance, or would also like to participate in the bardic
circle, or simply socialize without an organized structure. There's no
problem with that. Come play for those pieces as you like. Obversant
readers will notice a preponderance of arrangements by Steve Hendricks
(Master Samuel Piper). This is a tribute to that gentleman's strengths as a
composer, and to the sheet music programs he has put to good use. Other
arrangements, just as strong and perhaps even more popular, don't show up as
clearly on the printed page. In any case, if you have your own strong
preferences about these arrangements, please bring them. (I'm bringing 8
copies of the physical sheet music, and I imagine that will be more than
enough.) --Christian SET ONE:

Thanks, Master Christian, for all the fun at Raid or Trade! It was all a

And thanks to all the good folks who braved the weather (of all sorts) to
come and have fun with us! It was a blast!!!

Her Excellency Conna is too modest to mention that it was she who worked
with the musicians during the day, when I was otherwise occupied. My thanks
for that, and for her unfailing years of support for dance music.

Thanks go to Conrad, Azenari and Ermendrich for their work shepherding the
dancers. To the team that cleaned up the dance space after the last sliver
of daylight was extinguished. And to the dozen musicians who lent their
time and talents to the task, to terrific results.

--

Would the ball, in the darkened shelter, have worked better if we'd had
those luminescent glo-bands for the dancers? Or was the Renaissance
ambiance preserved more by dancing in pitch blackness?

Master Christian and other Dancers and Musicians

Yes, thanks to all who made the dance and who made music happen all day. I love
music (background or forefront) all day long. Loved being able to flit in and
sing a bit or listen and then flit away.

I would rather keep the glow sticks relegated to the potties. I was OK with
dancing in the dark, but maybe a lantern or two strung from the rafters would
have been nice...

Also, since I'm already here, a plug for our next Dance Practice. Next Mon
July 26 in Columbia, MO is Dance led by Master Conrad 7 - 9 pm on MU campus.
All are welcome. email me if interested in more detail.

Greetings to all Bards and Interested Parties

As bards often travel with their news, poetry and songs, so does our special
bardic event. Calontir's 3rd Bardic Bedlam will be on the eastern side of the
Kingdom. I have official approval for sponsorship by Barony of Three Rivers to
hold our event on the Heights at Puddleford (same site as William Marshall
event, near Warrenton, Mo.)

It will be a wet (if ya know what I mean)camping weekend with a grand
firepit/circle, lots of bardic classes and challenges (for beginners to quite

To those who were at the Raid or Trade bardic circle: One of our visiting
friends taught us this song which we sang in a round. It got stuck in my
head so I finally searched for the lyrics online. I found the lyrics below
which fit my memory of the song very well. I remembered that there were
some requests for the lyrics to be posted so I thought I would oblige.
Yours in Service,
Rhiannon O'Keith

Darling Won’t You Wait

Darling, won't you wait, won't you wait, won't you wait,
For I must go far away.
Darling, won't you wait, won't you wait, won't you wait,
'Til I come back home to stay.

Should another love come along, come along
Simply tell her you're not free.
Send her on her way, on her way, on her way,
Darling won't you wait for me.

Oh, my love, some of us are bound to die,
Oh, my love, it breaks my heart to say goodbye,
Oh, my love, when I'm far away I miss you so,
Hold me close, kiss me once again before I go.

As most of you probably know by now, my apprentice sister, Jehanne Bening is to
be eleveated to the Order of the Laurel at King's Companie of Archers here in
Forgotten Sea on 9/11. Our household is putting together a vigil/ceremony
worthy of her, her new status, and of her personna as a 15th century Burgundian.

When discussing plans, she mentioned a hidden boom box playing appropriate cd's
during the day to add ambiance to the vigil area. I cannot let this happen. So,
I appeal to you, good musical gentles of Calontir, to please help me keep this
from happpening. If you, singly or in groups could find the time to come to
this event and provide your services for her special day, our entire household
would be forever in your debt. I'm not asking for a specified time of the day,
specified music, or even a specfic length of time. If you can come by and play
or sing one song only, or many, you will not be turned away. It would mean so
much to her, and to all of our household. We are working very hard to make this
a very special day, that she will never forget.

Did I mention that there is a sumptuous menu for the vigil food which of course,
is on offer to all? Fare such as you cannot imagine, and I'm sure there will be
plenty of it!

YIS,
Constance

Greetings all, from one new to the list--

I am Susanna de l'Essart, from the Canton of Axed Root (Ames, Iowa). I used to
be a singer, back in the day, and I very much enjoyed listening to you play at
Raid or Trade. Music was my gateway drug to the SCA.

So... I'm the one who jumped in during rehearsal on that Saturday to ask you to
come to fall RUSH in the Canton on October 23rd. We are recruiting teachers and
orchestra. :-) There will be a Ball in the early evening and we hope that some
dance classes will be part of the schedule during the day. (There will be a
buffet supper instead of a formal feast, so the dancing may commence as soon as
court is over. We'll make sure the players are well-fed, too!)

The event flyer will be posted on the kingdom website very soon, and
announcements are forthcoming on several listservs. Feel free to discuss here
or to contact me off-list for more info.

And if anyone feels inclined to teach a class on madrigals--I can guarantee you
at least one rapt attendee.

Let me double check my travel plans with my lady but I should be able to do a
class on early period music theory that focuses on madrigals (especially middle
madrigals as that is were my priority is). I'll get back to you as soon as I
can.

This link came via the Digital Medievalist list; has anyone here used it? (You
need a user name and id to actually view the manuscripts but it sounds like a
fabulous resource.) It's *extremely* slow to load, so go get a cup of coffee
and come back later... ;-)

Thank you Zino!

Anyone else?? We're still hoping to have dance classes during the day so that
everyone can participate in the ball... but so far no one has contacted the
Event Steward to indicate what classes they'd like to teach. We *could* hold a
ball with recorded music... but we'd much prefer live music. ;-) And let's not
forget that everything goes more smoothly with a dance leader!

Check your schedules, talk amongst yourselves, and let us know how you'd like to
participate.

Thank you,
Susanna

Checked and I will be there so if want to schedule it the name is "Madrigal
Theory" a class on the music theory applicable to 16th century Italian
madrigals. (Basic music theory can be ran through quickly if needed). My full
name is Lorenzino Bartolome dei Albizzi.

Thanks

Sure, Lucia,
but, I have to do it from work. We have rural dial-up out here, and the file
takes time. It's big. I will do it tomorrow!

Hi all

I'm looking to put together a list of dances.

What are your personal favorite 3 dances?
What do you think are 3 of the most common dances done in Calontir?

Thanks

Conrad
