In a continued effort to help people know where thier dancing comes from, here's
a link to a resource guide for the dances on this year's Crystal Ball set list.

Enjoy,

OK so in a effort to improve the peridocity of the fun, what dances could we
substitute for the ones listed.

By substitute I mean a bunch of dancers doing an alternate dance at the same
time to the same music?

Ok some seem beyond hope (i.e. laendler,John Tallow's), but you should be able
to do any salterello to 'la Regina or maybe

a piva to Posties (ok this might cause a minor meltdoen in the irish dancer in
me). Are there any others?

La Chirantana for Trenhemore?

Galliard for Troika???

Master Conrad was kind enough to ask:

>what dances could we substitute for the ones listed?

>By substitute I mean a bunch of dancers doing an >alternate dance at the
same time to the same music.

Conrad,

I'm not sure you realize what message this sends to the gentles in charge of
the dance.

I have *not* spoken to the good people of Shattered Crystal, and they *may*
be a specific exemption, but I have seen dance mavens do this in both the
Midrealm and Northshield, and as the lead musician, I have been privy to the
astonishment and sense of insult felt by the people who assembled the ball
and taught the dances. Substituting dances comes across as disdainful.

The practice "we don't think your dances are authentic enough, so we're
going to assemble in your presence and dance something we like better" goes
over about as well as a bunch of cooks sitting feast and asserting "we don't
think the pork dish you brought out in this remove is period enough, so
we're going to eat this substitute pork dish that we brought, instead."

The people who taught the out-of-period dances felt like they've been
undermined. The new people at the event were confused, thinking they'd
learned something wrong. Observers saw the action as a public protest.
(And, I suppose, that the dance mavens might have admitted, 'Yes, we are
protesting. Yes, you were taught something wrong. And yes, we are trying to
undermine the spread of grossly-out-of-period dances.')

If the people who had objected to an anachronistic dance at those balls had
simply sat out and perhaps chatted during its performance, no insult would
have been given. If the entire ball held so many out-of-period dances that
sitting out would have limited the fun, I'm sure that a private note to the
dance coordinator, or simply choosing more authentic balls to attend, would
have been more effective.

I'm sure that the people coordinating Crystal Ball are experienced enough to
have encountered objections to their dance choices. I'm sure they've grown
a thick enough skin that they won't let this change the kind of balls they
want to host. I'm sure they are gracious enough not to let a sense of
offense show on their faces or in their manner. But in these things they
are exceptions. Master Conrad, there are groups in other kingdoms, and
perhaps even here, where an enthusiasm for dance has been stifled by people
doing things like this, and I would hate for others to follow your example
at other balls, spreading insult or a sense that dance mavens are disdainful
and snobbish.

With all respect and admiration,
Christian d'Hiver
(who used to claim that he didn't know the music to Korobushka, but who has
grown up since then)

Conrad,

Your idea got me thinking in the ways of creative re-use. I agree that Laendler
is a lost cause. However, I would be excited to work on a period style
choreography for the music for John Tallow's Cannon. The music we use is period
- the choreography is not. It would be neat, creative, and fun to work out a
more period choreography to go with that stunning piece of music.

Off to be creative. (that's what the C is for)

It is my pleasure to announce that Bellewode is beginning to look for
instructors to teach at the 5th (really? Has it been that many?) Annual
Bellewode Heraldic, Scribal, and Dance Symposium. This year it will be held
January 30th in Kirksville MO.

Due to Easter being where we normally like to hold our event and various dates
already taken, Bellewode is moving our event up this year. Now that our date is
set, we are looking for those interested in teaching classes. Our event has
been a great success every year we have held it because you decide to come and
share your knowledge with the rest of the Kingdom. Also let us know what you
have liked in the past and what you think we can do better in the future. And
of course we also look forward to dancing the night away at the only regularly
held ball in Calontir outside of Lilies!

If you have a class to teach send it to
mlagemann@...<mailto:mlagemann@...>. Include in
your email: your name as you want it to appear on the class list, the name of
your class, a description of your class, any time preferences you may have, and
any technology requirements you have (projector, laptop, etc.).

As classes come in and more plans come to fruition (oh and what plans we in
Bellewode have made!) we will have a website with the details.

There is also one other bonus to the event. From Noon until 4 pm there will be
a traveling exhibit of ancient Egyptian art that is open to the public on campus
for those interested.

Hi All

The main battlefield area has just been declared fallow for (probably) 2 years.
The new battlefield will be the field the fireworks are launched from.

So does anyone have any ideas for the locations of dance classes, the formal
balls, semi-random dancing and the music tent?

Alegreza lives up around my area (that's that extreme northwestern part of
Missouri, for those playing along at home), as does Alessandra. I could find a
spot to host dance practice, but no guarantees if I'd have people come. (One of
the hazards of living in the wilds of the kingdom - things are really spread
out.)

I'll try and get Alegreza and Norata on the list, though, as I'm not sure they
are.

Very cool Christian - especially discussion re: history/democratization of the
lute. Music is great. I'm listening to the bransle right now, wondering if I can
pick out "Big Bertha." (-:

Unto the Dancers of Calontir and the musicians that make us so happy:

Dancy, Dancy! (I will assume you all answered with a Boing, Boing!). The
Bellewode Symposium is now less then two months away! I know what you are
saying, "Ermenrich, that is still ages from now! I have time to plan my class
and get back to you later." Remember folks that the
Christmas/Hannukah/Kwanzaa/INSERT OTHER DECEMBER FESTIVITIES HERE is fast
approaching. Combine that with a Crown Tournament and Queen's Prize in January,
and you have a busy two months ahead of you. Please be thinking about what
class you might want to teach at the symposium.

Have you learned a new dance lately that you want to share? Teach a class! I
have heard rumors of something called Heralds in Lust, and I hope someone is
planning on teaching it! If you also want to see something danced at the
Bellewode Ball, email your suggestions.

I'll be there. I'd like to teach a 2 hour Tesara class. It's a dance for 10
people with ribbons! Whee!
I'll also happily do a Cascarde class and/or a Balli class.

Add to your class list -
Ly Azenari teaching English Country for the Masses (4 or more couples)
HL Cathus teaching Yet More New English Country
HLy Rowan teaching English Country Progressions

We can also each teach a second class if you like - Italian, EC, GOOP,
beginner or whatever you want/need
