"Warriors and Warlords" is Northshield's big summer event, jointly produced by
the baronies of Nordskogen (Tin Cities) and Jararvettir (Madison) on the weekend
after the 4th of July.

I justreceived the following missive from Mistress Rosanore of Redthorn. (Whome
some of you may recegnize as the "Rose" of "Rose and Nefr")

--Christian

Dear Christian:

I'm going to be the coordinator for the dance ball at WW16. Our plan is have a
shorter ball as early in the evening as possible on Saturday. We are wanting to
be the first party of the evening, in fact, and are hoping to be a very family
friendly event that lots of folk of all ages will want to attend. So, in
addition to teaching as many of the dances as possible in advance, we will also
be teaching during the ball.

Here is the list of dances, in the order in which we plan to do them.

Sellenger's Round
Scottish Bransle

Jenny Pluck Pears
Gracca Amorosa

Horses Bransle
Rufty Tufty

Earl of Essex Measure
Montarde Bransle

Amoroso
Madame Sosilia Alman

If there is enough time, we will also dance:
Quadran Pavane
Hearts Ease
Pease Bransle
Black Nag

Rosanore

Oh My! Lilies is only 3 weeks away!
Musicians tune up your instraments and please contact Lucia for copies of
the ball music.
Dancers put on your dancing shoes - we have over 25 hours of classes and 4
different balls on offer, plus a pilgramage!
My thanks to Hanne, Azenari, Arina, Ermenich, Cathus, HE Phillipe, HE
Isabaue, and Master Conrad for volenteering to teach classes. Especially Ly
Hanne who will be teaching our Calontir youth the joy of dance.
If anyone else wants to volenteer a bit of time before the ball please
contact me.
I am also looking for people willing to help provide munchies and drink for
the balls.
If you have enclosed candle lanterns that you can let us borrow for the
ball, please bring them.

See you all there!
Dancy, Dancy!!

Greetings all,

I now have a .pdf file available containing music for all the Lilies Ball sets.
The file contains music for the three sets -- from Official Bransle to
Contrapasso in Due -- and also contains copies of music being made available for
populace choice selections at the ball. This includes the following: Karabuska,
Mari's Wedding, Posti's Jig, Angus Reel, Road to the Isles, Female Sailor, Hole
in the Wall, John Tallow's Canon, Sellienger's Round, Heralds in Love, Black
Nag, Salterella la Regina, Manschaft Pavan, Calontir Bransle, Quen Quer Que,
Tangle Bransle and Lover's Braid.

Copywrite issues prevent the file from being placed for general download, so
anyone interested in playing for the ball please email me and I will return a
copy of the PDF to you. (Please note, the file is 6mb in size.)

I will only have a limited number of copies of the music with me, so please do
email me for your own copy of it, print it out and bring it with you to war.

I would also like to remind you all to remember to bring the following with you
the evening of the ball:
-- stool to sit on
-- booklight
-- large paperclips or clothespins in case of breezy conditions
-- music stand

I am planning to have a musician's rehearsal on Monday afternoon of the war
week. However, I'm having a bit of trouble managing to get it posted on the
Lilies site, so at this point I don't know what time they have it slotted. If I
don't find out in the next couple of days, I will set a time for it myself and
post it here. Also, I am planning to have a blackboard located at my tent that
will give information about music activities day to day. If you have any
questions before the war, please don't hesitate to email me. I'm very much
looking forward to seeing everyone there!

Best regards,
Lucia

Howdy, brothers and sisters, from Christian d'Hiver and Kasha Alekseeva,

This year, we will reprise our "Noontime Singing" at Lilies, every day of
the war, in some corner or another of the RUSH pavilion. Everyone is
welcome to come and sing. You don't need to read music. You don't need to
have pieces already rehearsed. You don't need a trained voice, or a trained
ear, or, well, much of anything other than a love of music and a willingness
to sing with others. This is just for fun: practicing pieces so that they're
performable is nice, but that isn't our main goal.

The pieces we're bringing to sing include:

Sumer is Icumin In, anon. 13th C.
sheet music: http://maucamedus.net/PDF/sumer.pdf
a MIDI (a little too fast): http://maucamedus.net/midi/sumer.mid

Dixit Maria (by popular demand)
sheet music: http://www.cpdl.org/wiki/images/sheet/hassler/has-dix2.pdf
a MIDI (a litle too slow):
http://www.cpdl.org/wiki/images/sound/hassler/has-dix2.mid
MIDIs for each part can be found at
http://www.gflower.org/nscmidis.htm (look for the "Spring/Summer 2001"
section)

The Peaceful Western Wind, by T. Campion
sheet music: http://sca.uwaterloo.ca/Hendricks/eballad2/peaceful.pdf
a MIDI (too fast): http://www.luminarium.org/renlit/peaceful.htm

Since First I Saw Your Face, by T. Ford
sheet music:
http://www.chorusrehearsal.co.uk/partsongs/pdfs/ford_sincefirst.pdf
a MIDI for each part:
http://www.chorusrehearsal.co.uk/partsongs/partsongs.php

Innsbruck, ich muss dich lassen, by H. Isaac
sheet music: http://www.cpdl.org/wiki/images/sheet/isaa-001.pdf
a college choir and flute ensemble performing it:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b6XmT3w-hY0

We'll be prepared to work on any of the pieces the Known World Choir is
planning to perform at Pennsic this year:
http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/KWChoir/files/Pennsic%20Music%202009/("Than\
ks
Gentle Moon" is nice.)

We'll also bring back the pieces we sang last year, but --and this is the
important part-- we welcome *you* to bring period music *you'd* like to
sing. (We brought four or five copies last year, which proved to be barely
sufficient. Learn from our mistakes, and bring six or seven copies.)

See you at Lilies!

Sincerely,
Iia Kasha
Lord Christian

It's now the count-down for Lilies, and I hope everyone is looking forward to
dancing and playing lots of music next week!

Since I haven't had much luck in getting things on the schedule, I just wanted
to post some info here. I will be having a Lilies Ball rehearsal on Monday,
June 15th @ 1:30p.m. More information, including the location for this, will be
posted on a blackboard outside my tent, located on the side-road right behind
Fernando's tent. Please attend so we can get an idea of how many people will be
in the pit, and what instruments we'll have. If you can't stay for the entire
rehearsal, please stop by for the beginning so I'll know you're planning to play
for the balls.

Good day, my brothers and sisters.

I have a small correction to make.

Her Ladyship Lucia wrote:

I regret being contrary to such a lovely person as HL Lucia, but the
balls do not use the same music packet, at all.

There is an enormous, twisting maze of arrangements for dance music,
all different (as far as musicians are concerned) and all mostly
identical sounding (to the ears of anyone dancing). This stems from
the way we have documentable melody lines for most dances, but very
few full arrangements. So various and sundry modern and SCA musicians
have written their own.

(I have seen nine different arrangements of "Rufty Tufty". Which
means that, at one point, somebody said, "We have eight versions of
'Rufty Tufty'. Clearly, we need another." Which is sad, because they
all mostly sound like Rufty Tufty.)

Virtually every SCA arrangement has been put into the public domain
and are available on the Web. One arranger in particular has chosen
to retain copyright and place his work for sale rather than
distribution. He's perfectly justified in doing so, but that's why I
avoided using his arrangements when announcing the music for the
Shattered Crystal ball. HL Lucia favors his arrangements and that's
why she needs to send private .pdf files.

For musicians looking to play on Monday night, I refer you to Message 1263:

Set 1:
Carolingian Pavan -- http://sca.uwaterloo.ca/Hendricks/Arbeau/bellequ5.pdf
Trenchmore -- (music unavailable in electronic format, but very simple)
Hyde Park -- http://sca.uwaterloo.ca/Hendricks/Playford_new/hydepark.pdf
Amoroso -- http://sca.uwaterloo.ca/Hendricks/Italian/amoroso.pdf
Horse's Bransle -- http://sca.uwaterloo.ca/Hendricks/Shawm/horse.pdf

Set 2:
Petit Riens -- http://sca.uwaterloo.ca/~praetzel/phaedria/PETIT_V.pdf
Black Nag -- http://sca.uwaterloo.ca/Hendricks/Playford_new/blacknag.pdf
Official Bransle -- http://sca.uwaterloo.ca/Hendricks/Arbeau/official.pdf
Gelosia -- (Musica Subterranea edition)
Chestnut -- http://sca.uwaterloo.ca/Hendricks/Playford_new/chestnut.pdf

Set 3:
Pinwheel Game -- (currently under investigation)
Heralds in Love -- (the popular Avatar 2-part arrangement)
Black Almain -- http://sca.uwaterloo.ca/~praetzel/Stockton/black_al.pdf
Gracca Amoroso --
http://sca.uwaterloo.ca/Hendricks/Transcriptions/gracamor.pdf
Ly Bens Dystonas -- http://crab.rutgers.edu/~pbutler/music/lybens.pdf

In past years, the Shattered Crystal ball has best been described as a
party, and we're hoping to make it just as fun this year. With a
couple of exceptions, all dances will be taught during the ball, and
danced with enough repetitions for everyone to feel comfortable.

I just scanned through the Lilies War Site book PDF that they announced today on
the Calontir list. They have the Shattered Crystal ball listed as starting at
7:00pm on Tuesday night.

It's my opinion that we should keep it on its normal Monday evening time slot,
and just post on lists about the mistake. And maybe put up flyer at troll and
around site? This ball has been on Monday night since I've been attending it and
I like the tradition value of that. Christian, what are your thoughts about it?

evening activities, but as on Monday night in the daily listing of
classes. At least it's 7 PM in both cases.

night ball

I just scanned through the Lilies War Site book PDF that they announced
today on the Calontir list. They have the Shattered Crystal ball listed
as starting at 7:00pm on Tuesday night.

It's my opinion that we should keep it on its normal Monday evening time
slot, and just post on lists about the mistake. And maybe put up flyer
at troll and around site? This ball has been on Monday night since I've
been attending it and I like the tradition value of that. Christian,
what are your thoughts about it?

Sigh. And they messed up the instructors for each class too in the class
descriptions.
Oh well. The point is - LOTS OF DANCING AND MUSIC
music classes, singing practice, dance classes, balls, pilgramage, socials,
and fun fun fun.
When I first mail the schedule in, Her Majesty said she was imagining people
starting the war preparing to enjoy dance and ending the war with stubby
legs cause they had danced their feet off! While I don't suggest you go
that far I hope to see everyone at something during the week.

Updates and notices for Music and Dance will be posted outside Lucia's
roadside camp (just down from the battlefield) and at the permanent shelter.

I'm still looking for help to set up the ball Wed night - meet either on the
battlefield or at my camp (just down the hill from Lucia's camp) at
~6-6:30pm

... regarding the sight-singing workshops you presented at Lilies:

I've been practicing pieces, and I'm thrilled that the techniques you taught
still work after Lilies!

But I've run into some songs that are not in major keys. (For example, the key
signature for Taverner's "Gloria" has one flat, but instead of leaping to F, the
tonic of the major key, it spends a lot of time leaping to D and G.)

In this case, do I stick to singing "6" on D, or do I try to get a minor "1 - 3
- 5 - 1" in my head instead?

Hi, sightsingers!

Christian, your question is a really good one.

There are no rules for learning sightsinging, so you should use whatever system
seems to work for you. I think that the easiest way to do things, however, is
to use "1" for the tonic note, no matter what key you are in. In a minor key,
that will mean that "3" is lower than it is in a major key. (It might mean even
weirder changes, if the song is in, for example, Dorian or Phrygian mode.) If
you keep the tonic as "1", though, you remind yourself and your ear of which
note is the most important in the piece. You also avoid singing lots of "6"s
and "2"s and other odd numbers.

I hope that is helpful.

Sincerely,
Kasha

Dear Kasha, I didn't see Christian's original email regarding sightreading. But
I attended the 1st, 4th & 5th of your sightreading classes at Lilies.

What was the pattern that you had the class sing to help people be more familiar
with the notes? -- it started 1 3 5 .....

Wasn't the "1" note the note that the song started with?

Also a question for you, Christian and other singers--I am looking for a simple,
inexpensive musical instrument to use to help with singing at the park to play
the starting notes of a song with--I was thinking of a xelephone (sp?) and was
wondering if I could find one that would be fairly inexpensive, but that would
be reliable (ie, that would keep the correct tone over time.)

I am 63 years old and learning an instrument that requires that I blow correctly
into it to get the right tone is out.

Jayne, As a vocal education major, my answer to the problem you are mentioning

Jayne,

My madrigal group used a simple recorder. You can get a good one for only $5
from Yamaha or Tudor. It is also good if someone needs to hear a part before
singing because it is portable. However, pitch pipes are good too, I always
carried mine as a backup in case the recorder player didn't show. Oh, and this
was a time before I could play the recorder myself if this confuses anyone.

Dear Jayne,

The pattern that I prefer to use for "getting the key in your head" is to sing
1-3-5-1(high)-5-3-1-5(low)-1-7(low)-1. Adding the 7 and the lower 5 helps, but
just 1-3-5-3-1 should do fine if you want simplicity.

"1" is *usually* the note the song starts on, but not every single time. To
find "1", look at the beginning and ending notes of the piece, and try to find
notes that are emphasized a lot. "1" will always sound like it has the least
tension--all the other notes in the piece will feel like they should lead to
"1". You can also get an idea from the key signature, although this can be
deceptive, especially in medieval music.

Let me know if any of this doesn't make sense... :D
