Oh, looks GREAT! I'll get you finalized names and course descriptions soon, i
promise! One request, though. Can we switch the days of the Salterelli class
and the Heys class? Also, have you considered scheduling the Swap Meet for
longer than an hour? I bet we could fill up more than that!

Katherine

Oh, hey! One more thing that I just remembered. If I'm going to be teaching
Amoroso, I want to make sure that I'm teaching a version that will match the
music being played at the ball (apparently the version I first learned is
wierd
and corrupt). Conrad, do you have a cheat sheet done up for it yet? Or
Katriana, do you have the music that you could send me, or at least give me a
reference?

Katherine

Lilies War 14 Class Schedule 7/27/99
Day Time Title Teacher Description

Monday 10 - Noon Dance 109: Survey of European Dance
   Conrad Martin von Kassel
An overview of European Rennisanse Dance from about 1450 to 1650. Styles
incluide; Pavanes, English Country Dance, Bransles, Italian Balli. This
class is desinged to introuce dancers to most of the styles of dance of
Rennisanse Europe, features some easy dances from each style.

Monday 1 - 3 Dance 111: Bransles and Pavans
   Philippe de Lyon
Come and lean the dances of the French Court. Pavans (slow and stately)
and Branles (rompus and fun) are easy to lean for the beginners, and offer
lots of flirting potential for the experienced dancer. We will be focusing
mainly on the dances being done at Lilies Ball.

Monday 3 - 4 Open
Can we fill this last open slot?

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
----

Tuesday 9 - 10 Dance 291: Teaching Dance Conrad Martin von Kassel You know
dozen of dances, learn how to pass this knowledge on to others.
Tuesday 10 - Noon Dance 121: Introductory English Country Dance Tsire Tuzevo
Come learn some basic English country dances. Round out your persona by
learning to do some dance. These dances are so fun everyone likes them and
so easy everyone can do them.

Tuesday 1 - 3 Dance 131: Introductory Italian
   Katherine Mercer
Think Italian dance is boring and stuffy? Think again! It's actually fun
and flirtatious and a great way to show off! We'll cover dances from both
the fifteenth and the sixteenth centuries including four which will be
danced at the Lilies Ball (Petit Vriens, Amoroso, Gelosia, and Rosti Boli
Gioioso).

Tuesday 3 - 4 Music 211: Playing music for dance
   Katriana op den Dijk

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
----

Wedensday 9 - 10 Dance 292: Intro to Dance Reconstruction
   Conrad Martin von Kassel
Join a group of dancers as we try to decipher an primary source and
reconstruct a dance.

Wedensday 10 - Noon Dance 224: Dance Intermediate English Country Dance
   Tsire Tuzevo
Come learn some of the rarer English Country dances involving some of the
2 couple and squares for four couple dances.

Wedensday 1 - 3 Dance 206: Dancing to live music
Conrad and Katriona Learn to listen and dance to live music, instead of
the momorized taped rendition of the music thats the same every time.

Wedensday 3 - 4 Dance 200: Caroso Ball
   Conrad (Host)
Come join in a period dance event where you can be both performor and
spectator. Dances will be limited to those in the ball list.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
----

Thursday 9 - 11 Dance 220: Heys are not for Horses
   Katherine Mercer Love Heys?
Then this is definitely the class for you. We'll be dancing English
Country dances that have different variations on the basic hey (mostly
intermediate level) including Black Nag, Picking of Sticks, Grimstock,
Whirlygig, and possibly one or two more if time permits.

Thursday 11 - Noon Music 211: Playing music for dance Katriana op den Dijk

Thursday 1 - 4 Dance 106: Review for the Ball Conrad et al Request any ball
dance you missed, don't know or need some more practice with.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
----

Friday 10 - Noon Dance 230: That Class with all the Saltarelli
   Katherine Mercer
The Saltarello was a popular medieval dance form and lots of wonderful
saltarello music has survived. But what do we actually know about how people
danced to them? In this class we will dance two hypothetical saltarelli
(Saltarello la Regina and Prendente in Giro) as well as Rosti Boli Gioioso,
an Italian ballo that prominently features a saltarello section.

Friday 1 - 4 Dance 204: Dance swat meet
   Katherine Mercer (Moderator)
Bring at least one dance you can teach (and provide music for it if
possible). Try to find an rare, new or unique dance to share with everyone
else.

==========================================================================

New stuff:

A 1 hour Caroso Ball on wendsday and a reconstruction class.
Also Katherine has agreed to host the dance swap meet on friday while I
fight (thanks).

Is this the "concert in the park" that people kept telling me about, but could
never provide details? I was given the impression that it was more of a
concert, not a competition. What's the story?

Greetings Calontir Dance Folk!

At last, the announcement you've been waiting for with baited breath (Well,
maybe not, but I imagine you're all glad to hear of this in any case). I have
finally compiled preliminary information on the Ball to be held in the evening
after Calontir Performing Arts Day in Couer d'Ennui on July 22nd 2000.
Anything
and everything is subject to change between then and now, I'll send out final
information when I have it, but for now questions, comments and suggestions
are
encouraged either on this list or privately.

Set List:

1st Set:
Gatherine Peascods
Gelosia
Maltese Bransle
Herald's in Love
Road to the Isles/Scotland the Brave
Black Nag

==Special Performance==

Second Set:
Carolingian Pavane
Rufty Tufty
Hearts Ease
Charlotte Bransle
Dolce Amoroso Fiamma (may switch to Villanella depending on what I teach)
Korobushka

==Special Performance==

Third Set:
Petit Vriens
Grimstock
Black Alman
Quen Quer Que
Jenny Pluck Pears
Rostiboli Gioioso

I chose these particular dances because they represent (in my mind) a mix of
standard and new dances, none of which are particularly challenging (ie if we
need to we can do review sessions before each dance), but which are fun. I
tried to alternate genres and speeds so that slow dances are followed by
quicker
ones, and more obscure dances are followed by well known dances. Most of the
dances being taught during the day will be danced during the ball (everything
from my class, almost everything from Conrad's Intro to Ren. Dance
class--although I have omitted Ballo Del Fiore, Horse's Bransle and the
Galliards from this draft if anyone has a problem with those omissions let me
know). I also tried to select dances which are popular in the northern region
especially.

Music:
I'd LOVE to have live music if we can gather enough musicians. If anyone will
be coming and would like to play, please let me know asap and we can work out
details (Katriana, will you be there by chance???)

Special Performances:
Tsire suggested that we might break the sets by doing special performances
inbetween. I think this is a great idea. They will be non-competative
chances
for people to show dances to the rest of the kingdom. I would like to
schedule
these in advance, so if anyone would like to perform, please let me know ASAP.

If there's enough interest we could have two dances per break.

Other Details:
I hope to make up a cheat-sheet/dance card for distribution. We will have
various snacky things handled by the capable Moire of NoMountain.

I tried to pick reletively common (with one or two exceptions) dances. If
anyone needs instructions or music to practice with your dancers, let me know.

See you the

Would anyone care to offer an opinion on how combining the Torchlight
Madness Merchant's event and the Lilies Ball went? My view of the whole
thing was limited to the musicians and dancing. The goal was to provide
some entertainment for the shoppers (and maybe pull some of them to the
ball) and provide entertainment for the dancers between dances (and let
them shop)

Also comments on the quantity and timing of dance classes if you're so
moved :)

Well, speaking as one of dancers who wanted to be there for more or less the
whole ball, I didn't like that it was the same night as the Merchant Madness.
The breaks weren't really enough time for me to go and actually shop.
Probably
the shoppers were quite entertained, though which is a nice bonus I hadn't
considered.

>

I think it would have been nice to have the dance classes a bit more spread
out
across the week to correspond with the timing of the other RUSH classes,
especially since some people only come for one or both of the weekends in
which
case they would have missed *all* the dance classes, ball, and pick-up
dancing.
Quantity was good, although I suppose I would have liked to see more things
like
Conrad's reconstruction and dance master classes perhaps at later times.

Well, in years past we have had a problem with attrition. When people
wanted to sit out a dance, there was NOTHING to keep them in the area (no
seats, no light for flirting) By having the sale and ball at the same
time, hopefully more people stuck around 'til the end. And the ball did
start later than the sale (outlasted most of the merchants too!) Also,
hopefully, we could pull some people who hadn't thought about dancing.
And having the combination of events gives a stronger hold on the night
against a torchlight tourney (the one thing that definately reduces
attendance)

Maybe we can come up with a solution. I'm hoping to hear from some
merchants about if the ball helped or hindered sales (in their opinion)

I personally thought it was a great idea to have the ball on the same night as
midnight madness. In reality, I don't know if we got any strays who wandered
up for shopping and came over for a dance or two. Anyone know?

And I'd like to know what the merchants thought of it. I'm sure Dragonsflower
liked it, since we were right by her and she could hear the music. Did we
really reach the whole merchant area? My perception's lousy.

Conrad, could you tell if we had more dancers than usual?

It's a layup for sure that this is a much better alternative than competing
against torchlight tourney.

Just my opinion,
Conna

Greetings again...

Well, once again I'm negligent and technologically incompetant. I tried to
get
the .wav file and failed miserably, but I have to admit that I didn't try as
hard as I might have because I've been toying with the idea (and, indeed, have
decided to) exchange that particular dance that no one knows for anther dance
that few people know, Villanella. The whole reason DAF was on the ball list
is
that I will be teaching it during the day, and I was having guilt pangs about
using a simplified and altered version of a 16th c. dance as my one example of
the genre. Anyway, Villanella it is.

If anyone wants the full ball list again, let me know. Katriana, do you know
the music to this one or shall we start the whole thing again (!). Thank you
so
much, by the way, for all of your efforts past and yet to come. :)

See you all the 22nd, I hope.

Rigela asked for input for the autocrats handbook on the Lilies Ball /
dancing.

This isn't the place for dreams (a good floor, lighting, ...), but rather
information to help people running the ball in future years. For example:

Making the list of ball dances available before the war and having the
dances taught both at events leading up to Lilies and at Lilies is a good
thing.

I'm leaving tomorrow morning for Pennsic, back on the 22nd or so.
Hopefully y'all will have posted some great suggestions and I'll get them
to Rigela.

or maybe Rigela remembered to ask Conrad a while ago and he already did this.

I would say be sure to have a (well publicized) night of review and pickup
dancing. That seemed to go very well. And at the ball, as much light as
possible and plenty of water. Obvious, I know.

See you at Pennsic.

Don’t let those dance skills languish over the winter. Be prepared to put
your best foot forward at the next event. Polish your existing dance skills
and learn new skills at our dance workshop / event.

Our site is the community building in the town of Whittier, approximately
20-25 minutes north and a little east of Cedar Rapids. Lady Tsire of Couer
d’Ennui and Lady Katherine of NoMountain have volunteered to teach an entire
day of dances.

Basic Information:
9:00 AM Site Opens
10:00 AM --- First Dance Session – Dances anyone can do – Bransles and
simple country dances
1200 NOON – Break for lunch. There will be a tavern of simple fare on site
1:00 PM – Second Dance Session – More English country dances
3:00 PM – Third Dance Session – Pavannes and Italian dances

10:00 PM – Site Closes

Fees -- $5.00 for site, with the evening meal included. Make checks payable
to SCA Inc, Shire of Deodar

Other activities – we will try to have gaming tables available. Fighting is
a possibility if the weather cooperates – however, this is Iowa in November.

Directions – If you are coming via Interstate 380, you will need to use the
Toddville Exit. Turn east onto County Home Road. Follow County Home road
approximately 12 miles (going east) to Whittier. The community building is
on the southwest corner at the only stop sign in town.

If you are coming from the east, you can use Hwy 13 to the County Home Road.
From Hwy 13, turn east onto County Home Road. Follow County Home Road
approximately 4 miles (going east) to Whittier. The Community building is
on the southwest corner at the only stop sign in town.

Note: Whittier is a very small community with no grocery store or fast
food. The closest place to purchase food would be Springville or Central
City. We will have directions for those who wish them.

Greetings Calontir Dance Folk!

I would like to announce that the 2nd Northnern Region Dance Practice will be
held at the college of NoMountain on February 17, 2000. Unfortunately this
date conflicts with Estrella, but we hope that enough people will not be able
to make it down to Atenvelt to make our event a success anyway!

I would like your help ont he following:

1) Can you please any dancers or musicians in your groups know that they would
be most welcome (particularly northern region folks). We can provide some
crash space (please contact me in advance) and the site fee is free!

2) I'm looking for teachers, anything from one or two dances that you know
particularly well to a full hour (or more!). I know some of the people I
would normally count on are going to Estrella (Conrad?, Tsire?), so *anyone*
who thinks they wilbe coming and would be able to teach for a bit is most
welcome.

I'm away from home right now, but I'll send along the event flyer in a few
days.

In Service.

ps. Tsire, could you please forward this to your C d'E dance list?
