So, in the evening of Luther & Maerwynn's coronation, in Their Shire of
Deodar, we'll be holding a dance ball.

Here's what I'd like to try. I'm posting this proposal here, and,
based on any suggestions you folks might have, I'll be disseminating a
more polished announcement to a wider audience on Monday or so.

There are three sets, each taking about an hour. Afterwards, there'll
be pick-up dancing and requests.

SET ONE:
Set One is intended to be dance-novice friendly. People who haven't
danced (or danced much) before should be able to walk away with a
positive experience. We can achieve that by getting them comfortable
enough with a few dances that they can get past the "learning stage" of
trying to remember the next steps, and actually dance. This set should
consist mostly of well-known favorites, but it might also include a new
dance. All dances will be taught.

     * Official Bransle
     * Black Almain
     * Petit Riens
     * Gathering Peascods
     * Rufty Tufty
     * My Lady Cullen

SET TWO:

The middle set is a "standard" dance ball. There may be some new
dances, but not many. Most dances will be reviewed beforehand, but not
all. In all, we'll probably get through about eight dances.

     *  Rostiboli Gioioso
     *  Sellenger's Round
     *  Picking of Sticks
     *  Ly Bens
     *  Calontir Bransle
     *  Heralds in Love
     *  Piantone

SET THREE:

Set Three is a "Caroso-style" ball. A Caroso ball is, in some ways,
the analogue of a bardic circle. People take turns leading. Sometimes
the leader starts a song / dance where everybody joins in, and sometimes
you'll see a a piece with just a couple or two on the dance floor, and
everybody else actively watching the performance. To accomodate a live
band, the request list needs to be restricted to, say, 20 or so dances:

     * Ballo di Fiore (will start)
     *  Amoroso
     *  Bella Gioiosa
     *  Chestnut
     *  Gelosia
     *  Gracca Amorosa
     *  Heart's Ease
     *  Korobushka
     *  Maltese Bransle
     *  Montarde Bransle
     *  Nonesuch
     *  Pavane
     *  Quen Quer Que
     *  Salterello: La Regina
     *  Vita di Cholino
     *  Washerwoman's Bransle

Help me out. What dances need to be added, or switched around?

--Christian

Wahoo, I'm glad I'm already planning to attend this one. This is quite an
ambitious plan and I'm excited to see it go forward.

In keeping with your request for suggestions, here's my two and a half cents.

It may be worth asking Cathus and Rowan for some of their newer English Country
reconstructions, I'm blanking on the names but they're quite nice. (Cathus,
Rowan , Help, what's the snap and change one??)

Please leave the out of period dances for the pick up dancing and out of the set
list. These include:
Korobushka
Calontir BranslePavane (which one - many are very very modern and made up)Quen
Quer Que (tertiary research experiment on a Cantiga format- ask it's creator
Sion if you'd like more info)Salterello: La Regina

For personal tastes I'd replace:
Bella Gioioso with Villanella, Washerwomans Bransle with any non-mimed bransle,
and Nonesuch with a root canal.

Most of all I'm just glad you're taking this on and that there will be dancing
at two coronations in a row. Woot!

Some of the more popular English Country dances we've done are
Confesse, Mage on a Cree, and Bobbing Jo (the 'snap and change' one).
:-)

I'd wouldn't mind seeing more choices on the Coroso list. Why not ask
the musicians for a list of the dances that they'd be able to play if
asked?

Unfortunately we're not going to be there - it looks like a great ball.

Thank you for your suggestions, as well as for your enthusiasm and
support! It would be rude of me to ask for your opinion and then
publically disagree with it. But I'd be happy to send you a private
note explaining why I chose some of the post-1600 dances.

Someone asked me for music for this tune from Christian's list, so I
thought I'd take the opportunity to post it more widely in case others
need it. I don't recall why I did this one (was this one that was on
two pages? Did I do it at your request Constantia?), but it's free and
clear in CCL from S. Hendricks. There were a couple of edits (replacing
tied notes with longer duration/value notes) that he suggested and I
don't know if I ever got to them, but hopefully at some point I'll find
the time to go back and check... These are from last November.

I never took the time to do the MIDI parts so it's just there all
together. If someone needs them, ask and I'll go chop it up.

Enjoy.

I also second Confesse. It's one of the lesser-known ones (isn't it?)
and it'd be a great teaching opportunity.

Just a remainder that Sept. 20th I will be hosting a Musician's Retreat at my
home.

This is a non-SCA weekend of food and music for my fellow SCA musicians. If you
want to come I need to know for food and crash purposes. The fun will start
Friday night and not end until Sunday afternoon.

Anyone wanted to teach a class or needed special "stuff" please contact me for
arrangements.
Pass this on to any SCA musicians who might be interested.

This is a loose schedule for the weekend. Subject to change as someone gets a
good, well landed blow past my guard.

Friday
I will be taking the day off so come when you might. We will have small snacks
and light drinks. The hot tub will be open and I do have trunks and lots of
t-shirts for those without a suit. My guest room is about the only crash in my
house as it will be our main meeting place. But we have a lot of crash space
across the street at Ly Beven place (And I do mean across the street.) and if it
is not rented by then Countess Fionna and Master Andrixous have a apartment just
a half mile away for folks to lay their weary heads. I will try to have
everyone a crash space assigned when folks plans firm up and I get your
responses.
I think we have a dozen coming and I have a dozen here. So if everyone shows
should be lots of music going on.

Saturday
For breakfast, bacon, toast, scrambled eggs, waffles, coffee, hot tea and oat
meal. I figure breakfast will be around 8:30ish. That gives us plenty of time
to shower eat and meet everyone. Breakfast, as all but one of the meals, will be
at Natalia's table.
  As we have over a score of us to play I will be taking all the large tools out
of my shop to clear the floor to make it our music room. If it is a nice day we
will open the doors and have a cheery shelter, if it is not so nice we will have
a stout haven for our fun!
For music I was thinking the "The Jubilee Set", 18 pieces of 4 and 5 part music.
This set is quite popular with many of the musicians in other kingdoms and I am
told the Lingua Franca of many SCA musicians. I will have enough copies for
everyone and try to get a PDF on the Grimfells Music site
(http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/Grim-music/) and will ask that it be put
on the Calontir music web page... which I will confess I don't know the address
for.
Lunch will be around 1ish. Just about time for my fingers to be getting tired.
I will be serving as main course a Pear-honey glazed turkey with Pear-Onion
stuffing. Many of the other Grimfellions will be bringing some of their
specialties to sample and enjoy. Should be a fine and filling repast. After
eating the last of Ly Natalia's famous apple crisps we will wipe and hands and
back to the music. If you want spirits with your meals I will ask that you
please provide your own. My funds do have a bottom. I will supply tea, water
and coffee. Saturday evening around 7ish we will all pile in to AQ for dinner.
(If you have not experienced AQ you have not had chicken. Iowa and Nebraska
have steak. Grimfells has chicken!) The rest of the evening is free flow. What
every you want. Hot tub will be open. I have a large collection of DVDs and a
home theater. Or if you are mantic you can play some more. I will follow the
crowd. If you decide to go find a rockabilly band and dance till dawn, I got
your back.

Sunday
Breakfast around 9ish. Pavel's omelet bar. Custom Omelets to your order. There
will also be the normal fixings; bacon, toast, waffles, oatmeal, coffee, and
tea. If there are folks here at lunch and dinner time we will be eating
leftovers. :) You are welcome to stay till 8am Monday, but I have nothing but
recovery planed for me.

I will be staying up till the last of you are in. You can just get off I540 in
Fayetteville, give me a call (479-283-8836) and I will come get you. Or if you
have a GPS use the following address to get here:

2463 W. Valley Dr.
Fayetteville, AR  72703-1122

Just a note to say a big Thank You to HL Christian for running the
Coronation Ball pit at Coronation in Deodar this past weekend.

It was fantastic to gather together musicians from a couple of
kingdoms, and the sets were lots of fun to play. Thank you for
organizing everything and for all the fun!

And a huge debt of gratitude goes to:

The irrepressible dance shepherdess: Lady Daria of Coeur d'Ennui
The musicians:
Amy of Jararvellir (soprano and tenor recorders; she also played background
music at feast), Mistress Conna (soprano and alto recorders), Gwenhwyfar
Grek (trombone), Hyacinth of Jararvellir (alto recorder), Lady Kasha
(soprano recorder), Lady Lorelei of Skye (percussion), Lorelei of Shadowdale
(violin; her first event; she also played background music at feast), and
Megan of Jararvellir (soprano recorder).
The free dance booklet, including all the steps to all the dances: Lady
Lorelei of Skye

It was a blast. Next time we do it, we'll want to invite more dancers.

Indeed it was fun. I wish I had enough energy for the other two sets. I know
this was NOT in the hands of those running the ball, but I think what hurt
attendance some was the Bardic Circle running concurrently. I know of some
people from my group that would have danced, but they also wanted to be a part
of the circle as well.

For future occurrences of 'too many things going on at once', you can
safely assure any would be dancers that the bardic circle will be going
on long after dancing ends.

I'm sure Conna can attest to this as well.

I happily stayed through the end of the ball, then happily stayed at
the fire circle until the fire was put out at 5 am.

Plenty of time for both! ;)

Crown Tourney is the weekend before Crystal Ball here in St Louis. Is there any
interest in making dancing happen there? I'm looking for volunteers as I may or
may not be able to attend this myself but am willing to coordinate.

Hi List!

I've got the music organized for musicians for this year's Crystal
Ball. As always, it's an open pit, and the more the merrier.

I've already heard from a few people. Let me know if you're able to
join us this year at the 25th Crystal Ball. I'd be happy to e-mail a
pdf of the music to you if you're going to come play.

Cheers!

Would it be ok to put that up on the Grimfells Music list? If so, would you
send me a copy?

I am hoping to attend. I have yet to go to an out of kingdom event, and
since becoming more active in the SCA music scene, I would love to make
Crystal Ball my first. I know it isn't ver far out of kingdom, but hey,
anywhere across the border counts, right?

Could you kindly send me the music to constancewsca@... ?
