I have a question about Charlotte Bransle. I've read it can be danced in a
circle or in a line. How is it danced in Calontir - circle or line?

Thanks,

Emelye

Emelye, you are making me blush. :-) Thank you. Might I suggest that we look
at a slow dance for next time. We seem to have quite a few fast dances in our
repertoire and when we run through them all, we get quite the workout. :-)

I had a great time last night. We have a great group of people. It was a fun
way to spend my anniversary. :-)

             Hi everyone,

I just have to brag on Sara Sophia doing a fabulous job teaching Ly Bens. It was
so much fun! I noticed she received a lot of guidance from the list yesterday.
Thank you! This is by far my favorite List that I'm on.

Our dance group keeps growing and growing each week. The first week we started,
we had 6 participants. Last night we had a total of 12! We'll have one more
practice before Lilies. Between now and then, I might also poll the list for
advice/dance description interpretation.

Thanks again!

Emelye

In most of the SCA bransles are danced in a circle (with the partial
exception of horses bransle).

This is normally a function of how we set up a dance. I.e. We announce
what dance we are going to do, form

up in the called for formation, usually review the dance then ask the
musicians to start playing.

Apparently a common way to dance bransles in period was for one (or a
few ) to start a dance as the musicians started to play

and others join the line on the right as they wanted throughout the
dance. At some time during the dance, maybe as it neared

the end or as there were as many people that wanted to dance/could fit
in the space, the lead person (person on the left)

would draw the line into a near ring or even close it by taking the
person on the right's right hand.

This joining in progress for bransles is practiced in the SCA by
breaking the ring at most any point if somebody wants to join in after

The music has started.

Perhaps Black Almain or Contrapasso in Due would, Amoroso is also fairly
slow as is Chestnut for an ECD.

Thank you! Good to know! We've been practicing Charlotte in a line, so now we
can mix it up with the circle.

Plus these instructions from Tsire . . .
Black Alman (Couples in a line)
Double Left Forward; Double Right Forward

[turn 180°] Double Right toward partner

Ladies step Left, step Right; circle Left, Right Left
[take hands with partner] Double Left switching places; 4 slides up the hall

To clarify a bit

>[take hands with partner] Double Left switching places; 4 slides up the hall

4 slides up the hall will be to the lords right

>Double Left switching places;4 slides up the hall

The slides are again to the lords right, but this is the opposite direction as
the first 4 slides (really down the hall)

The video looks goods, but it looks like it starts 90% of the way through a
repeat with the

'Double Left backing away from partner; Double Right toward partner'

The dance really starts with the 4 doubles forward.

Hi everyone,

Sara Sophia and I were wondering what's the next easiest dance Mag Mor could
learn from the Lilies Ball list. We have one more practice before Lilies. So far
from the list, we know Carolingian Pavan and Ly Bens. Murdoch and I are going to
try to teach Black Alman. Is there another dance from the Ball list someone

Sara Sophia was looking for a slower dance. (Slower than Charlotte or Horse's
Bransle)

Here's the complete Ball list:
Carolingian Pavan (Mag Mor knows this)
  My Lady Cullen
  Anello
  Confesse
  Villanella
  Heralds in Love

Black Alman (Mag Mor will know this)
  Gracca Amorosa
  Heart's Ease
  Saturday Night/Sunday Morn
  Hyde Park
  Petit Vriens

  Black Nag
  Sellinger's Round
Ly Bens Dystonis (Mag Mor knows this)

  Cantiga 119 (Piantone)

Well, TECHNICALLY the easiest dance on the list to learn is Piantone -
couples in a circle with the ladies on the outside, gentleman form a "star",
Do pivas around the "star" to the music, caller tells you to go up or back
one (or more) partners, or to reverse and piva the other direction, or to
switch and put the ladies to the inside of the "star". DONT STOP THE PIVA
CIRCLE AT ANY TIME. Continue with the caller till the music is done or the
dancers have all messed up trying to find the partner that is "four back, or
six forward, or switch and one forward" and have fallen out of the dance.

Hyde Park and Confesse are both nice and slow but certain sections/verses
can be confussing to explain in print - easier to show you. NOT my lady
cullen - its not what I would call a slow dance. I'd have to say go for
piete riens - not particullarly slow but probably the next easiest to learn.
Or possibly hearts ease or black nag - good english country standards.

My Lady Cullen is rather quick and has the added complexity of being a
progressive dance, meaning the couples will do different parts at
different times).

From the ball list I would suggest

Anello

Hearts ease

Black Nag

Petit Riens

Hearts Ease is definitely the slowest of them, petit riens the fastest.

Easy Dances on this list are:
Carolingian Pavanne
Anello*
Black Alman*
Hearts Ease*
Hyde Park
Petit Riense*
Sellengers Round*
Ly Bens *
Piantone
  * Sara Sophia - you did these at Crown Tourney

My suggestions are:
Anello
Black Alman
Petit Riense
Hyde Park
Keep in mind that with live music you can make any dance slow while you're
learning it. :)

   * Sara Sophia - you did these at Crown Tourney

  My suggestions are:
  Anello
  Black Alman
  Petit Riense
  Hyde Park
Keep in mind that with live music you can make any dance slow while you're
learning it. :)

Hey Folks,

I will not be on site till Tuesday and need someone to cover my Monday afternoon
Progression Class.
Azenari will not be at the war as planned, thus, I need someone to cover the 2pm
Ball review on Wednesday as well.

Progression class requires a patient teacher of an English Country type bent.

Please e-mail me ASAP if you can cover this.

"Renaissance" magazine issue 61 is the annual Wedding issue, and
includes an article on "Dancing at Your Renaissance Wedding".

There are steps and instructions for Black Alman, Official Branle,
Petit Vriens and Sellenger's Round (alas, with four verses,
Katriana). The author, Nicole Salomone
(www.originsofplayforddance.com), seems fond of the Musica Subterranea
recordings.

Subject: Bardic College revises Charter - includes dancers, musicians
emelye_tayte
Send Email Send Email

Hi everyone,

Just wanted everyone to know the Bardic College is considering revising its
charter to include musicians and dancers. I thought you may like to know this is
occurring and perhaps comment before any final decisions are made. You may or
may not have an opinion on whether dance, instrumental music or choral music
should be part of the Bardic College. The main discussion on this topic is
taking place on the Calontir Bardic list - CalontirBards@yahoogroups.com.

Dorcas is the Dean of the Bardic College and gave me permission to forward the
latest revision of the Charter. I don't know if I can attach Word docs to this
list, but I'll give it a try anyway. If it doesn't work, the specific wording of
the membership part of the charter is as follows:

----------------------------------------------------------------------
                 Membership
The Bardic College is open to all who have an interest in the bardic or
performing arts. Anyone may become a member by: 1) stating an intention to
become a member and 2) completing one performance in the presence of any member
of the College. The member who was witness of said performance shall then
notify the Dean by writing or email at the soonest opportunity of the name and
residence of the new member so the new member may be recorded for purposes of
maintaining a census of the college.

All members of the College shall be considered equals, and there shall be no
internal rank structure of members within the Bardic College. The Kingdom of
Calontir's award structure shall be used should any need arise.

Definition of the Bardic and Performing Arts
Three traditional bardic arts are recognized by the Bardic College:
   1. Storytelling
   2. Poetry
   3. Music
Other performing arts are recognized as having historical significance and
entertainment value. These include, but are not limited to:

   1. Dancing, as practiced in all cultures relevant to the SCA
   2. Playing music for dancers, including drumming
   3. Instrumental performance
   4. Theatrical performance
   5. Juggling, tumbling, and other arts of the Fool
   6. Choral performance
   ---------------------------------------------------------------------

Hopefully, the Word doc attached ok. If it didn't and you'd like to read the
entire charter, I'd be happy to email to anyone who wants it.

Thanks,

Emelye Tayte

OK - I saw you can't attach a document to an email, but you can easily upload a
file to the Group so everyone can download it. Cool! So the Bardic Charter
should be accessible to everyone. If you still can't access it, I can email it
to you.

Thanks for bringing this up. What does everyone on this list feel about being
included in the Bardic College charter? Were any of you approached about your
opinion on the subject before being added?

I would like to clarify for a moment before much else.

The Bardic College is not trying to say if you do these arts you have to be
a Bard.

The reason the change came about, was trying to open things up to people who
want to be involved.

So I think the intent is, "We will accept any as Bards who do any of the
following activities, if they wish to associate as bards," is a little more
accurate than, "All of the people who do these arts are by default, Bards."

The whole thing appears to be a bit of a sticky wicket from where I stand,
but I think this might help the appearance of what is being discussed.

-Roberto
