Single = A step (first single is with left foot, second with right, etc) with
the other foot then coming together (So "Step, Together) This should take two
beats (one for the step, and one for the Together)

Double = Step Left, Step Right, Step Left, Bring right foot together with left.
The next double (if doing two in a row) would be Step Right, Step Left, Step
Right, Together. This should take four beats, (one for each step and then one
to bring them together).

Hope this helps.

Hi

OK this is a bit of an oddball dance

Simple Explanation
Singles are simple step left and close with the right, step right close
with the left.
A double would be a left, right, left and close (or turn in this dance)
While the single, single, double has the same pattern as a pavane, it's
much more upbeat

As for timing that's trickier. If the music is 4/4 then a single is 2
beats or 1/2 measure.
While a double is 4 beats or 1 full measure. This will vary if the
signature is different.

One tricky thing about the music for this dance is that the last phrase
(the step out, step in, turn)
sounds very much like the first part (the single, single, double),
resist the temptation to start
the next repeat here.

Fuller explanation (ignore if you want)
The Greesly series of dances (which this is one) have been described as
English dances with 'Italian like' steps
They are not English Country Dances.

With this in mind there's more freedom to style the steps. The main
difference is that Italian steps don't
close the trailing foot in a series of like steps. Italian singles are
more like step left, pause; full step with right, pause
Etc. And a double as left, right, left, pause (the 1 beat for the pause
is when the turns to face are done).

Thanks for the explanations so far. I'm trying to get the steps to work out
with where I think it should end in the music, but keep coming up short. And
the stuff online that I'm finding is not being very helpful. I think I'm
looking at stuff that is too scholarly when what I need is someone that says "a
single is a step-close." I will keep practicing it and see if I can get a speed
that matches the music. That is always the hardest part about this for me. I
learn the steps alone and then have to fit them to the music. :-)

Thanks again,
Sara Sophia

I can get the dance to end where I want it to about 50% of the time. I don't
know what the difference is between it not ending right and it ending right. :-)
I'm treating the music as 4/4 time. Sigh, all I can do is keep working on it
until 7 tonight. :-)

the above is a link to a short sample of the music,
it starts in the middle of a repeat.

The first full phrase is the out, in and turn. To me it has this rhythm
(daaa daa dada daa, daaa daa dada daa)
[Out close in close turn 2 3 4)
The next phrase is the single, single double forward.
This essentially sounds like a repeat of the same music.
(daaa daa dada daa, daaa daa dada daa)
[lf close rig close lef righ lef close)

The little slider should be just past halfway over when the second
phrase ends.

The next phrase is the away a double and pack phrase. To me it's more
melodic.
To me it has this rhythm
((1)Bambaba baaaa ba, (2)baa baa baa baa - (3)Bambaba baaaa ba, (4)bam
bababamp baaa)
The double out is measure(1), the double back, measure(2)..
With the second out and back being (3) and (4)

This takes up 2/3 of what time is left.

The last part of the music in this cut is the first half of the second
out and back (just the out)
And the music starts to fade out at the beginning of this part.

I hope that helps.

If you can't get it you can call me after 5 at 314 229-9687 and can play
the music loud enough I can try to
call it for you.

The following is billed at Ly Bens Dystonia. I am not sure if this is the same
thing, but it might help. Or it might not. I honestly don't know, so if
someone could correct me if I just sent a link to a completely different dance,
I would appreciate it.

It is but it's the long variant and different from the one we normally
do here.

The following is billed at Ly Bens Dystonia. I am not sure if this is
the same thing, but it might help. Or it might not. I honestly don't
know, so if someone could correct me if I just sent a link to a
completely different dance, I would appreciate it.

the above is a link to a short sample of the music,
it starts in the middle of a repeat.

I can get the dance to end where I want it to about 50% of the time. I
don't know what the difference is between it not ending right and it
ending right. :-) I'm treating the music as 4/4 time. Sigh, all I can
do is keep working on it until 7 tonight. :-)

Thanks so much,

That is indeed the music I am trying to dance to, but the dance steps are not
the same. It looks like a variant of the dance I'm trying to put to the music.
Maybe a different interpretation?

Thanks for the link though. I keep forgetting to check YouTube for SCA dances.

Well, I finally sat down and counted and guess what. The first run through on
the mp3 is about 2 measures/bars/4 counts shorter than the rest. No wonder I
can't get the steps to come out right the first time. :-)

Thanks for all the help everyone. I think I've got it now. :-)

Hi everyone,

I just have to brag on Sara Sophia doing a fabulous job teaching Ly Bens. It was
so much fun! I noticed she received a lot of guidance from the list yesterday.
Thank you! This is by far my favorite List that I'm on.

Our dance group keeps growing and growing each week. The first week we started,
we had 6 participants. Last night we had a total of 12! We'll have one more
practice before Lilies. Between now and then, I might also poll the list for
advice/dance description interpretation.

Thanks again!

I have a question about Charlotte Bransle. I've read it can be danced in a
circle or in a line. How is it danced in Calontir - circle or line?

Thanks,

Emelye, you are making me blush. :-) Thank you. Might I suggest that we look
at a slow dance for next time. We seem to have quite a few fast dances in our
repertoire and when we run through them all, we get quite the workout. :-)

I had a great time last night. We have a great group of people. It was a fun
way to spend my anniversary. :-)

In most of the SCA bransles are danced in a circle (with the partial
exception of horses bransle).

This is normally a function of how we set up a dance. I.e. We announce
what dance we are going to do, form

up in the called for formation, usually review the dance then ask the
musicians to start playing.

Apparently a common way to dance bransles in period was for one (or a
few ) to start a dance as the musicians started to play

and others join the line on the right as they wanted throughout the
dance. At some time during the dance, maybe as it neared

the end or as there were as many people that wanted to dance/could fit
in the space, the lead person (person on the left)

would draw the line into a near ring or even close it by taking the
person on the right's right hand.

This joining in progress for bransles is practiced in the SCA by
breaking the ring at most any point if somebody wants to join in after

The music has started.

Perhaps Black Almain or Contrapasso in Due would, Amoroso is also fairly
slow as is Chestnut for an ECD.

Good thought! Maybe Murdoch and I can figure this one out - Black Almain.

Found a You Tube video of it:

Plus these instructions from Tsire . . .
Black Alman (Couples in a line)
Double Left Forward; Double Right Forward
Double Left Forward; Double Right Forward [end facing partner]
Double Left backing away from partner; Double Right toward partner
[turn to own L] Double Left away from partner
[turn 180°] Double Right toward partner
  Lords step Left, step Right; circle Left, Right Left;
Ladies step Left, step Right; circle Left, Right Left
[take hands with partner] Double Left switching places; 4 slides up the hall
Double Left switching places;4 slides up the hall

Hopefully, we can make sense of these two sources and try Black Almain next

To clarify a bit

>[take hands with partner] Double Left switching places; 4 slides up the hall

4 slides up the hall will be to the lords right

>Double Left switching places;4 slides up the hall

The slides are again to the lords right, but this is the opposite direction as
the first 4 slides (really down the hall)

The video looks goods, but it looks like it starts 90% of the way through a
repeat with the

'Double Left backing away from partner; Double Right toward partner'

The dance really starts with the 4 doubles forward.

Hi everyone,

Sara Sophia and I were wondering what's the next easiest dance Mag Mor could
learn from the Lilies Ball list. We have one more practice before Lilies. So far
from the list, we know Carolingian Pavan and Ly Bens. Murdoch and I are going to
try to teach Black Alman. Is there another dance from the Ball list someone

Sara Sophia was looking for a slower dance. (Slower than Charlotte or Horse's
Bransle)

Here's the complete Ball list:
Carolingian Pavan (Mag Mor knows this)
  My Lady Cullen
  Anello
  Confesse
  Villanella
  Heralds in Love

Black Alman (Mag Mor will know this)
  Gracca Amorosa
  Heart's Ease
  Saturday Night/Sunday Morn
  Hyde Park
  Petit Vriens

  Black Nag
  Sellinger's Round
Ly Bens Dystonis (Mag Mor knows this)
Rosti Boli Gioiso
  Picking of Sticks
  Cantiga 119 (Piantone)

Well, TECHNICALLY the easiest dance on the list to learn is Piantone -
couples in a circle with the ladies on the outside, gentleman form a "star",
Do pivas around the "star" to the music, caller tells you to go up or back
one (or more) partners, or to reverse and piva the other direction, or to
switch and put the ladies to the inside of the "star". DONT STOP THE PIVA
CIRCLE AT ANY TIME. Continue with the caller till the music is done or the
dancers have all messed up trying to find the partner that is "four back, or
six forward, or switch and one forward" and have fallen out of the dance.

Hyde Park and Confesse are both nice and slow but certain sections/verses
can be confussing to explain in print - easier to show you. NOT my lady
cullen - its not what I would call a slow dance. I'd have to say go for
piete riens - not particullarly slow but probably the next easiest to learn.
Or possibly hearts ease or black nag - good english country standards.

My Lady Cullen is rather quick and has the added complexity of being a
progressive dance, meaning the couples will do different parts at
different times).

From the ball list I would suggest

Anello

Hearts ease

Black Nag

Petit Riens

Hearts Ease is definitely the slowest of them, petit riens the fastest.
