Hello Brown CS Alumns,
For the 14th year, Brown's Department of Computer Science is planning
Artemis - a nationally recognized outreach program to encourage girls
from local public schools to pursue careers in Computer Science, and
more broadly in science and engineering. Artemis is a five-week
summer program in which its participants - female rising ninth graders
- are exposed to the breadth of applications of Computer Science, and
are introduced to a variety of the technologies underlying computing.
The learning process includes a range of both educational and
confidence-building activities. Further, the girls hear lectures from
women scientists and other potential role models from both academia
and industry. Artemis is also a networking opportunity: the girls who
participate befriend other girls their age who have an interest in the
sciences. A key goal of the program is that each Artemis student
should be able to picture herself as a scientist by the end of the summer.
Work is beginning for Artemis 2009. Our Artemis '08 coordinators are
currently recruiting coordinators for the coming year but we need
additional financial support to keep this important and highly visible
program financially viable. If you would like to contribute to
Artemis, please email abt@....
Thank you for your consideration.
Best regards,
Amy Tarbox
