Origami Zoo Chapbook Contest 2012

We are pleased to announce that the first ever Origami Zoo Chapbook Contest is
open for submissions from now until January 5, 2013! The final judge will be the
cataclysmic Matt Bell. Origami Zoo Press has published chapbooks by Laura van
den Berg, Chad Simpson, BJ Hollars and Brian Oliu.

PRIZES: Winner receives $250, publication by Origami Zoo Press in 2013, 25
copies of the chapbook, and plenty of love and affection.
One honorable mention will also be published by Origami Zoo Press in 2013,
receive 25 copies of the chapbook, and an equal amount of love and affection.

WHAT WE WANT: We want stories that surprise and thrill. We want words that come
alive with longing on the page. Basically, we just want our minds blown by your
writing. Send us something we haven’t seen anywhere else. Send us what you
think we absolutely must read.

GUIDELINES (please read thoroughly before submitting!): Submissions must be
received no later than January 5, 2013. Submit manuscripts of 40-80 pages in
either doc, docx, pdf, or rtf format. Both novellas and collections are welcome.
It’s great if pieces of the manuscript have been previously published as
standalone pieces or excerpts, as long as the manuscript as a whole has not been
published. Include title page, table of contents and, if necessary, an
acknowledgements page. Pages should be numbered. Please do not put any
identifying information in the submission itself. In the cover letter field on
the submission form, include author’s name, mailing address, phone number and
email. The author must not have a close personal or professional relationship
with either Matt Bell or the editors of Origami Zoo Press, Rebecca King and Sam
Martone. If an author is unsure if this applies to him or her, query us at
<origamizoopress(at)gmail.com> (replace (at) with @ in sending email).
Simultaneous submissions are fine as long as you withdraw your manuscript from
the submission manager immediately upon acceptance elsewhere. An author may
enter the contest an unlimited amount of times, but each submission will require
its own reading fee. There are two options of reading fees: a $15 submission fee
for consideration, as well as guaranteed personalized feedback from the editors
if not chosen. Or, a $20 submission fee for consideration and personalized
feedback, plus a copy of the winning chapbook.

Subject: poet in residence sought: The Frost Place

https://thefrostplace.submittable.com/submit

Applications are now being accepted for the 2013 Dartmouth Poet in
Residence at The Frost Place in Franconia, NH. This is a six to eight
week residency in poet Robert Frost's former farmhouse, which sits on
a quiet rural road with spectacular views of the White Mountains.

The residency begins July 1 and ends August 31, 2013, and includes a
$1,000 award from The Frost Place and $1,000 from Dartmouth College.
The poet will have several opportunities to give readings across the
region, including at Dartmouth College, for which the poet will
receive a $1,000 honorarium.

The house, built in 1859 and owned by the Frost family from 1915 to
1920, is spartan, but comfortable. The Frost Place Museum is open to
the public during afternoon hours, and a portion of the house is
closed off for the resident poet.

Previous recipients of this residency, which began in 1977, include
Katha Pollitt, Robert Haas, William Matthews, Cleopatra Mathis, Mark
Halliday, Mary Ruefle, Mark Cox, and Laura Kasischke. Many of these
poets have returned to The Frost Place to participate in the
conferences held each summer. The aim of the residency program has
been to select a poet who is at an artistic and personal crossroads,
as Frost was when he bought the place in 1915.

The primary criteria is that applicants must have published at least
one book of poems. Application and guidelines can be found at
thefrostplace.submittable.com. Poets may apply directly or be
nominated by someone else. There is a $25 fee for applications. The
deadline for submission is midnight, December 31, 2012.

Since 1994, the Poetry Center's Residency Program has offered emerging poets,
fiction and non-fiction writers an opportunity to develop their work.
http://poetry.arizona.edu/awards-residencies/summer-residency-program

The Poetry Center awards two residencies each summer to one poet and one prose
writer to spend two to four weeks in Tucson, Arizona developing his/her work.
Writers at any stage of their careers may apply; emerging writers are welcome.
The residency includes a $150 stipend per week and a two-to-four-week stay in a
studio apartment located within steps of the Center's renowned library of
contemporary poetry. The residency is offered between June 1 and August 31.

2013 Guidelines

Interested parties are asked to follow the guidelines below when submitting,
which includes a project proposal. All project proposals will be considered;
however, the committee is especially interested in projects that make use of the
Center's library collection.

Applications are reviewed by a committee of poets and prose writers comprising
UA faculty, Poetry Center staff, and local writers. This is not a blind
submission process! Committee members are asked to acknowledge any conflict of
interest and not invite friends, students, or family members to apply.
University of Arizona faculty, staff, students, and Tucson residents are not
eligible to receive the Fellowship. International applicants are welcome.

Deadline: December 17, 2012, by midnight

2013 Committee: Fenton Johnson, Manuel Muñoz, Aidan Fine, and Sarah Kortemeier

We're now accepting submissions via Submittable!
https://universityofarizonapoetrycenter.submittable.com/submit/14383
Visit link to submit your Summer Residency application.

We no longer accept paper applications via mail. Applications received via mail
will be recycled. Please make sure your manuscript is exactly how you would like
it before uploading. We do not accept revisions.

Submissions should include the following in one document in the order listed:

A resume or CV.
A project proposal, no longer than 3 pages, outlining the kind of work you plan
to undertake during your residency.
Work sample. No more than 10 pages of poetry or 20 pages of fiction or literary
non-fiction.
We only accept DOC, DOCX, PDF, and RTF files.
Reading fee: $25 via Submittable. Submittable accepts Master Card, Visa,
American Express, and Pay Pal.
The Residency Experience

Temperatures in Tucson average in the hundreds during the summer. Mornings are
cool and great for hiking in the Sonoran Desert. The monsoon season hits about
the end of June. The guest apartment is located within the University of Arizona
campus and on the premises of the Poetry Center. There are a few coffee shops
and restauraunts nearby and the guest apartment comes equipped with a bicycle.
Residents are responsible for providing their own transportation to Tucson and
for the duration of their stay. Some of our guests do just fine without access
to a car; others wish they would have rented one. This is especially true of
those interested in sight-seeing and exploring. Unlike other residency programs,
there are no other writers or artists staying on-site simultaneously. However,
the Poetry Center library is full of fun and interesting patrons who like to
talk about books. The Poetry Center staff, volunteers, and docents do provide
some hosting and welcome activities for the summer residents; however,
applicants should understand that they are largely on their own. We leave it to
each individual to decide how much engagement with the community s/he would
like, understanding that residents are here for uninterrupted writing time.
There are no obligations to teach a class or hold office hours (although some
residents have done this and it has been received well by the community). The
only obligation, aside from maintaining residence in the guest apartment for two
to four weeks, is to give a reading with another local writer sometime during
the visit.

We provide residencies for one poet and one prose writer. Unfortunately, we only
have the resources to provide one residency for one person at a time. The guest
apartment cannot accomodate spouses, significant others, or pets. The primary
purpose of this program is to provide time for people to write. Beyond the
initial welcome, where we stock the guest house with some basic essentials, the
residents are responsible for buying their own food and other supplies. We have
a wide variety of markets, grocery stores, and restaurants in close proximity to
the Poetry Center. In addition, residents are responsible for doing their own
laundry. Again, we have a few laundramats in close proximity to the Poetry
Center. While we do have free internet access in the Poetry Center, as well as
in the guest cottage, the guest cottage is not equipped with a landline.
Residents are responsible for bringing their own cell phone, lap top or
computer, car, and exercise equipment. Smoking in the guest house is not
permitted.

(title TBD) celebrating the Jersey Shore. The book, edited by poet Joanie
DiMartino, is expected to release in late 2013, and proceeds from the sale will
be donated to ongoing restoration charities.

We are looking for: your prose, poetry, and artwork inspired by your
recollections and reimaginings of the Jersey Shore. The focus should be more on
love than loss, but send your best work for consideration. No restrictions or
length limit on submissions, within reason. Send submissions to
<annmarie(at)unboundcontent.com>
(replace (at) with @ when sending email)
and INCLUDE JERSEY in the subject line. Writers and artists do not need to be
residents of New Jersey to submit work for consideration. Deadline for
submissions is 03/31/2013.

Joanie DiMartino is the author of two collections of poetry, Licking the Spoon,
(Finishing Line Press) and Strange Girls, (Little Red Tree Publishing). She is
the director of the Hidden Treasures Poetry Series in downtown Mystic, CT, and
hosts the Soup & Sonnets Literary Salon for Women. Raised in southern New
Jersey, she holds history degrees from both Rowan and Rutgers. She has fond
memories of summers at the shore, and is a true Jersey Girl.

The 2012 Boston Review Essay Contest
https://www.bostonreview.net/contest/submit/
http://bostonreview.net/about/contest/index.php#Essay

Deadline: December 1, 2012
Judge: Glenn Loury
Prize: $1,500 plus publication

With all the derision cast upon flip-floppers and etch-a-sketches, it is easy to
forget that changing one's mind can be a noble and decent act. Sometimes a
conversion is unavoidable. It can come fast or slow, deliberately or
unexpectedly. There is no formula, and that's why the story of a changed mind
can be a great one.

Boston Review wants you to tell us how you came to see things differently. We
are looking for personal essays of up to 3,000 words that describe experiences
or encounters that forced you to recognize dissonances in your worldviews,
struggle with those dissonances, and ultimately affirm new moral, intellectual,
spiritual, or political commitments. Essays will be judged on the strength of
the writing and critical analysis.

Complete guidelines:
The winning author will receive $1,500 and have his or her work published in
Boston Review, March 2013. Essays should not exceed 3,000 words. Mailed
manuscripts should be double-spaced and submitted with a cover note listing the
author's name, address, and phone number. No cover note is necessary for online
submission. Names should not appear on the essays themselves. Any author writing
in English is eligible, unless he or she is a current student, former student,
relative, or close friend of the judge. Simultaneous submissions are not
permitted, submissions will not be returned, and submissions may not be modified
after entry. A non-refundable $20 entry fee, payable to Boston Review in the
form of a check or money order or by credit card, must accompany each story
entered. All submitters receive a complementary six-month subscription (3
issues) to Boston Review. Submissions must be postmarked no later than December
1, 2012. The winner will be announced in March 2013, on the Boston Review Web
site.

accepted. The extra cost is to cover the paypal fees as well as the time, labor,
ink, and so on, to print out your manuscript. Or use our website

http://www.pavementsaw.org/pages/chapcontest.htm

If you wish to send via regular mail, have your envelope postmarked by December
31st and accompany your manuscript with a check in the amount of $15.00 payable
to Pavement Saw Press. All contributors to the contest will receive books,
chapbooks and journals equal to, or more than, the entry fee. Add $3 (US) for
other countries to cover the extra postal charge. Do not include an SASE for
notification of results. Do not send the only copy of your work. All manuscripts
are recycled and individual comments on the manuscripts cannot be made. This
year the editor will be the judge and, as it should be, he promises not to chose
former students, former or potential sexual partners, press interns, or people
that can make him famous. A decision will be reached in March. Entries should be
sent to our address at the bottom of the page.
