Adirondack Life Writing Contest
https://www.adirondacklife.com

There’s more to the Adirondack Park than its peaks and valleys, woods and
waterways—it’s the people here who shape this place’s culture and
character. That
’s why we’ve made profiles of people, past or present, within the Blue Line,
the focus of our first-ever writing contest.

Writers are encouraged to tell the stories of forgotten Adirondackers,
living or dead, using oral histories, interviews and personal observations.
Material should be compelling, fresh—a perusal of Adirondack Life indexes in
local
libraries will indicate who has already been profiled in the magazine’s
pages—
and written with an eye for detail and honesty. These profiles should broaden
our knowledge of life in the Adirondacks through the region’s noteworthy
individuals.

Entries must be unpublished, no more than 2,000 words and no fewer than
1,000, and postmarked by September 1, 2007. The winner, determined by
Adirondack Life’s editorial staff, will be published in the December 2007
issue of the
magazine and its writer will receive $500. Second- and third-place winners
will appear on www.adirondacklife.com. Submissions, one per person (previous
contributors to Adirondack Life are not eligible), must be sent, with a
self-addressed stamped envelope, to Adirondack Life Writing Contest, Box 410,
Jay, NY
12941. E-mail submissions will not be accepted.

RESPONSE: The Seattle Pacific University Magazine
http://www.spu.edu/depts/uc/response/spring2k7/features/essay.asp

At Seattle Pacific University, we’re learning to engage the culture, with the
ultimate goal of bringing about positive change in the world through the
gospel of Jesus Christ. In the pages of Response, we offer glimpses of the many
and varied ways in which that mission is being fulfilled. But we know that there
is much more to discover, many stories that have yet to be told. You may have
observed some of them. You may have lived some of them.

Response invites you to submit an essay (750–1,000 words) that conveys in
some way — whether through a personal story, investigative reporting, or some
other form of creative nonfiction — the theme of “engaging the culture,
changing
the world.”

The winning entry will be featured in the Winter 2008 magazine, and the
writer will receive a $250 prize.
Deadline: August 1, 2007

Send your essay to
yourresponse(at)spu.edu (replace (at) with @)
or mail it to Response, Seattle Pacific University, 3307 Third Avenue West
Suite 116, Seattle, Washington 98119.
Please include your name, address, email, and daytime phone number when you
send your entry.

Competition Rules

Each entrant may submit one essay to the competition. All entries must be
accompanied by your name, address, email, and daytime phone number in your
email.
The competition is open to anyone, except Seattle Pacific University
employees and their immediate families (spouses or children).
Entrants will receive an email acknowledgement that their entry has been
received. The winner will be notified by December 1, 2007.

mentions. The four prize-winning stories will be read at the 2007 Santa
Fe Short Story Festival by professional actors. Finalists (the four

allowance if they live 100 miles or more from Santa Fe. The contest is
open to all 14-19 year-olds residing in New Mexico.

Original short stories on any subject of up to 2000 words in length
will be considered. (Essays and works of creative non-fiction and
memoirs are not eligible.)

Submit four copies, double spaced, one side of the page only, starting
with the title half way down the first page.

Do not include your name anywhere on the manuscript. Instead, fill out
and return the contestant's statement/submission form with your entry.

One story per contestant.

Please do not send your only copies as they will not be returned.

Only entries postmarked by August 3, 2007 will be considered.
Postcards acknowledging receipt will be sent to all those whose stories

The Festival retains non-exclusive rights to publish, in print or

The Festival offers young writers a unique opportunity for recognition
and exposure of their work in the Festival setting. Please make the most
of it!
