Our institution sees creativity as one
of our "essential skills" that we teach and embed in all of our
courses.
It is described as:
Employability Skill #1
Creative Thinking and Problem
Solving Skills
Recognizes problems and generates new ideas;
devises and implements plans of action.
Foundation Competencies
observe and record data accurately
define and articulate the problem
identify information gaps
identify constraints and limitations
create, test, modify solutions as necessary
for implementation
Advancement Competencies
make generalizations (transfer knowledge and
training to new situations)
document a systematic decision-making process
using appropriate methods and comparison
facilitate the creative problem-solving process
using a variety of techniques such as brainstorming, analogy, probing,
attitude, analysis
identify the impact of solutions on resources
(personnel, financial, time, etc.)
critically evaluate information for accuracy,
relevance, and importance
think critically and act logically to evaluate
situations
while this is not everything that creativity
offers, it is nice to work somewhere that values it
looking forward

Hello Any members out there
Hello Allan and other friends
I have already joined the group and I have great interest
in the subject of creativity. I am doing these dyas a study aiming at developing
a framework to integrate creativity skills in the curriculim of technical
education in Saudi Arabia. Anybody is interseted in that subject?
I have special interest in investigating creativity considering
Cultural Factors. In addition I think we need to conduct deeper
studies and discusion on the methodology used in creativity literature.

Hello Any Members of the Creativity List
still remaining?
No messages have been posted on this list since April.
Does this mean there is no longer any interest in the group?
Cathy
You are definitely applying your creativity daily.
Good luck on all the great things you have planned
over the next couple years.
I just did a Google.com search for
"new zealand" + "creativity courses"
It found a few hundred possible sites.
Here is one for the University of Wellington.
http://www.vuw.ac.nz/conted/courses/professional/creativity.asp
Alan
Hi back from my day out in one of main avenues for practical creativity
- handweaving & spinning and in my case mainly the avenue of magically
but creatively overdyeing, dyeing and rejigging mainly wool yarns into
something tempting for members and folks to buy and add to their stash;
maybe create something etc etc
But also Alan is already in the know that next year I'll be joining
those in the "playground" @ Auckland University
http://www.auckland.ac.nz/ as a mature full-time student taking a BA.
I've more or less planned out which subjects to take Philosophy; Logic &
Computation; Anthropology as the main 3 and add for one semester English
Writing and in the following semester one of the 2 General Education
courses - outside of BA field that is part of this particular univ.
criteria.
Because I'm a little unsure of Logic/Computation I have taken a course
in Philo which could lead to another area.......the reason I'm unsure is
that if this particular subject doesn't like me then I have a fallback
subject however if it does like me I most likely will have to add Maths
and that might be a stumbling point.........however there is extra help
in particular for Maths. So we shall see.
I may change Anthropology to something else but that will depend on the
Careers Day which is coming up Sat week when I have had a chance to
really looksee. I have a huge range of subjects to choose from with a BA.
On Aug 21 I'm signed up for Groundwork which is a 10 session course to
get my rusty brain back to the school yard i.e. writing assignment & we
have to write one so that will sure give me something to work on. Then I
begin in earnest next Feb.........if I find I can cope with study etc I
may add another degree the following year and do a Conjoint but at this
point I have accepted to do a BA - have the mugshot and ID card to prove
it! :-)
It would be really lovely to do Creativity as a subject but there is no
university in this part of the country that actually does that and I'm
not sure there is anything in NZ at all........I could at a pinch and I
will have to think pretty hard about this......could go overseas for
part of my BA 6-12mths which could mean I could add something but as
have to think hard! as that would mean changing alot of what I like to
do Textile wise and of course the financial side of just living might be
more difficult.
I didn't have a lot of trouble being accepted because of that lovely
word "mature" but there was a lot of form filling and I still have much
more to deal to including applying for scholarships. I've been on a
gov't handout for well over a decade with my health issues and I have
found out [lovely surprise] there is much help financially wise via them
but then again I have a long form to wade through. So until Oct I can
rest from forms then get them out and get stuck into them!
I've had marvellous verbal support from pals; from health professionals;
and some my relatives! And the more I get involved with the whole
structure the happier I feel. My health has improved a lot over the last
2yrs which is encouraging. And of course a lot of that has been to do
with getting the body fit - becoming a gym bunny! I just changed gyms in
the last week or soooooo so I'm on a steep learning curve yet again
learning how to use basically the same machines but different brands.
Working through the logistics which in a way are easier as this place is
closer to home......and stuff like that.
I carry on creativity in the textile art works I make from time
including my main love is creating with colour and dyeing yarns either
for me or to re-sell.

I did my doctorate in creativity from 1979 to 1983
with Dr. Paul Torrance and Dr. Sidney J. Parnes, from
the Creative Education Foundation and founder of the
Creative Studies Masters Program at Buffalo State

Yes I am interested in discussing your work in Saudi
Arabia and how creativity translates across cultures
and the potential differences in approaches and
results.
The premise of your paper matches my work since 1976
in helping people in any field to develop and enrich
their creative thinking in any job in any field.
Unfortunately some of the most famous creativity in
accounting has ended up becoming infamous....Enron and
others in the past 10 years here in the US.

Thanks for the motivatioin Eileen.
Folks let's challenge our visual creative muscles.
Divide a 2 dimensional, drawn box into 4 pieces as
many ways as you can.
The goal is to see if we can do it 144 or more
different ways.
I offer a copy of my book BROKEN CRAYONS as a prize to
the single largest producer of ideas.
I believe we can share the drawings as graphics/photos
through the group.

I wish you well as you creatively deal with your
"problem".
It was members of this list and CREA-CPS that helped
me when my wife was ill and died from 1997 to 1998.
Good to see you are still on the list.

Hello Any Members of the Creativity List still remaining?
No messages have been posted on this list since April.

My most recent project was to deliver,
this morning, a 3 hour workshop on Developing your Teaching Portfolio,
I spent yesterday finalizing a short
text on the topic and creating a couple of interactive and thoughtful activities
to get people started. We will offer at least two more chances for this
group to reunite and to share what they are doing on this journey to develop
a reflective and focused Teaching Portfolio.
The event went well and I received useful
feedback from the participants.
Later in the week, I will give a workshop
on Creating Inclusive Classrooms and another on 8 Ways to Motivate Your
Students (Howard Gardner's 8 Multiple Intelligences) that is a bit of misnomer
as I hit them with 104 ways (13 for each Intelligence) and then we look
at how this can be used in the classroom.
Other than that I am working on my doctoral
studies and hope to do my comprehensive exams this fall.
looking forward

What is one of your recent projects?
For me professionally is outwardly marketing again
after 10 years of traveling and working. Personally
one of my creative projects is digitizing (scanning)
photos from pre-digital camera trips to create photo

Hello Alan,
I am also on this list.
The last days I was reading several questions on www.brainreactions.net
Its one version of open brainstorms with peoples from all categories.
One feature is the possibility of never ending collecting.
But we all can also talk in this list.

Dear Alan,
I'm stil here too. Why don't you put up an ice breaker on the list to get
people talking? I can find one on Google if you want me to do it. I'm trying to
deal creatively with a big sad problem that I can not discuss openly on the
list. I'm succeeding about fifty percent as much as I'd like to.

I am currently reading Thomas I. Friedman's book:
THE WORLD IS FLAT
It is filled with many examples of creative and innovative thinking
that has continually made the world more flat or simpler rather than
more complex at least in the business world.
How do you think the world is more flat for you?
Alan
this last few months have been a somewhat checked creatively time.
about 3mths ago I discovered I was heavily booked every weekend for 6
of them right through to Easter when basically it would be mine!
so to get through this marathon of things I had to make sure I never
overdid the mostly short weeks between things. Each of the w/ends
except for 2 Sundays were different.
1 = 2 days of textiles - mine for Waitakere Arts Weekend. I was in a
cluster at Titirangi. That is when I created another Art Hanger which
is just way over the top. Called it Born to be Wild when it hit
another w/end further down the track.
2 = off to Taumarunui for my primary school [Turaki] reunion and to
catch up with family including my much older brother now in
residential care. Thurs - Sunday.
3 = back in town but important AGM Saturday - then Round the Bays
Sunday along with 80,000 others estimated. First walking challenge
for me did it in 1hr 24mins 3sec + 9mins to get to start line!!
http://roundthebays.co.nz/ - the barcode says something different though.
4 = up to Kerikeri for Great Escape an Embroiders workshops and fun
stuff. It rained from mid Sat morning right through to late Sun nite.
I mean rain!!! Went away Fri am - late arvo Mon. Born to be Wild and
Shark - 2 Art hangers in the mini exhibition as well.
5 = in town but 3 days at the Home Show in the Crafts section as
model on the catwalk everyday at 1pm. With an extra session on Frid
at 2pm. Clothes varied but mainly wool or mohair. So hot work in the
big tin sheds at the showgrounds - lots of spot lights - high
roofline and a tiny wee change area. Lots of the fun, though & I learnt heaps.
6 = not soooooooooo much happening but on Sunday Nikes Womens
Challenge http://www.hotrun.co.nz/womens-challenge.shtml with an
official timing chip 1hr 16mins & some seconds :-)
and this is w/end 7 supposedly my time out however today I have a
family do because my middle sister who lives France/UK died recently
and there is a letter and stuff to read from her husband etc. However
this w/end I have managed quite a lot of dyeing of both wools,
synthetics, cotton, tencel so that has been great. I finally managed
to get back to my loom and have woven the princely sum of 6" but hey
that's a little less than 10mtres!!!
also over this w/end I have constructed my first Auckland Embroiders
newsletter on the provided template. Up until a few weeks ago I was
only the gofer/collector and someone else was the Editor but she
suddenly threw in the reins and I'm on a steep learning curve.
However I found though my local library services that I was entitled
to some free self-directed online learning for computer and Publisher
- kewl. A new upgrade computer that I'm still getting to grips with
as well - also have a scanner and printer. Yes I know most people
have printers but for a few grey years I've not had one!!!!
I continue to fit in as much as I can into my life and taking on the
Editors job [unpaid] was just the ticket for someone trying to get
more done with her own textile art :-) but it also means I get to
play around with Publisher and crreate stuff I guess for my life. And
fitness plays a huge part in my life so that each day I endeavour to
walk the hard yards or do the Gym stuff but it does help I have way
more energy to get through everything else
Happy Easter everyone

Hello fellow list members from around the globe
What have you been doing creatively lately?
For me the past few days it has been nearly every simple act I would
normally have done with my right hand and arm. I had surgery to
repair a torn rotator cuff during a simple accident the first week in
January. In about 6 weeks I should be back to being a two armed person.
For awhile call me lefty.
I just read Daniel Pink's A WHOLE NEW MIND.
I enjoyed reading it and being a mostly predominantly right brained
focused person by nature and nurture generally agreed with his messages.
Back to reading.
Please share what you have been doing creatively or with your
creativity lately.

3RD CONFERENCE ANNOUNCEMENT AND CALL FOR PAPERS
Sustainable Innovation 06
Global challenges, issues and solutions
11th International Conference
23rd – 24th October 2006
IIT - Stuart Graduate School of Business
Chicago
USA
Organised by:
The Centre for Sustainable Design (www.cfsd.org.uk)
In Association with:
The Center for Sustainable Enterprise, Stuart Graduate School of Business
Part of the 'Towards Sustainable Product Design' series of conferences
Background
The new business model means that design, assembly, manufacturing and
consumption are now often geographically disparate within long and complex
value chains. This change has dramatic implications for the creation and
development of future products and services. Such restructuring and the
economic rise of China and India is leading to increasing interest in
Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP) - with an emerging issue being
the need to improve understanding of consumers and users behaviour and
their relationship to products and services. In addition, climate change
and the need for new low carbon solutions - to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2)
emissions - is now taking centre stage with growing acceptance of the
uncertainty surrounding global weather patterns. However, most
product-related
sustainability improvements are incremental or based on re-design with
little radical innovation focused on significant reduction in materials and
energy use throughout the lifecycle. In addition, where sustainable product
design and development (SPDD) happens it tends to focus on environmental
aspects with social considerations largely ignored. SPDD tends to be
practised by advanced, transnational companies with little penetration
amongst small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). A major opportunity to
accelerate sustainable innovation is emerging with the growing interest in
South-East Asia, Europe and North America in the use of public procurement
as a tool to drive improved environmental and social performance of product
and services.
Concept
Sustainable Innovation 06 will provide a platform to discuss gobal
challenges and opportunities for sustainable product/service development
and design. It will highlight best practice and provide a range of case
studies and examples. Sustainable Innovation 06 will include invited and
refereed papers covering sustainable product/service development and design
from academics, consultants, product designers and design engineers,
sustainability, environment and CSR managers and other business functions.
The event will be a be a unique learning experience and networking
opportunity. Delegates will come from large companies, entrepreneurs and
small and medium-sized (SMEs), as well as academia, government and
non-governmental organisations (NGOs). The conference is supported by an
leading-edge international Advisory Board.
Conference topics
Sustainable Innovation 06 welcomes conceptual and research-based papers
covering sustainable product and service design and development in the
context of a range of issues:
* Market transformation
* Product policy
* Sustainable public procurement
* New business models
* Collaborations and partnerships
* Innovation processes
* Supply chain management
* Product-service-systems (PSS)
* Education and training
* Tools and techniques
* Management systems
* Organisational dimensions
* Performance measurement and metrics
* Newly industrialised and 'developing' country perspectives
* Case studies
There will be particular interest in papers that address the following
questions:
* How to design 'systems level' change?
* How to accelerate the design and development of low carbon products,
services and technologies?
* How to tackle organisational challenges associated with sustainable
innovation?
* How to diffuse sustainable product design and development (SPDD) to SMEs?
* How to build SPDD capacity in China and India?
Submission details
Conference papers: please email, fax or post 500 words describing your
proposed paper by 31st March 2006. The paper will then be sent to the
Advisory Board for evaluation and authors will be given feedback by the end
of April 2006. The highest rated papers will be invited to present at the
conference.

Hi there,
I am SAM, an Iraqi refugee living in Lebanon at the moment; I have spent the
last 10 years of my life as a refugee registered with the UNHCR in Beirut. The
last 4 years, I have spent as an activist for peace and human rights (especially
refugees and asylum seekers) on the Internet; I'm also books author and ebooks
publisher. I have launched many campaigns to improve our situation as refugees
in Lebanon and hopefully bring more understanding to our problems worldwide. I
helped make many changes and improvements at the UNHCR office in Beirut; I used
the Internet as the field for my activities (you can read more about that in my
free ebook 'MY CAMPAIGNS'). All my ebooks are free and could be download from my
sites.
This is my newest campaign, it's about the illegal and humiliating actions of
the UNHCR, who using photos of refugees as banners and human-buttons to collect
money. This is an abuse of the dignity and humanity of the refugees and must
stop immediately and a clear public apology present by The United Nations High
Commissioner for Refugees. My friends, I am talking about the pictures you can
see here:

For more info about UNHCR and life of refugees you can read my free ebooks. I
invite you as fellow humans and members of the world community to support my
campaign by reading my article on my site and see the human-buttons. The
campaign is to support and improve the UNHCR http://www.unhcr.ch especially
after the last scandals in the UN and UNHCR, just for example:
The refugees allege that UNHCR staff is selling most of the food items they are
supposed to be supplied.
"They aren't supplying sufficient food to us because they sell most of the food
items," they allege: http://allafrica.com/stories/200503140214.html
Here is another example: Burmese Refugees Withdraw Protest Against UNHCR

"We make demonstration and fast because the UNHCR office in Cairo did nothing
for our problem..." http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/4440730.stm
Together we will build better world.

Sustainable Innovation 06
Global challenges, issues and solutions
11th International Conference
23rd – 24th October 2006
Venue to be announced
Part of the 'Towards Sustainable Product Design' series of conferences
Background
The new business model means that design, assembly, manufacturing and
consumption are now often geographically disparate within long and complex
value chains. This change has dramatic implications for the creation and
development of future products and services. Such restructuring and the
economic rise of China and India is leading to increasing interest in
Sustainable Consumption and Production - with an emerging issue being the
need to improve understanding of consumers and users behaviour and their
relationship to products and services. In addition, climate change and the
need for new low carbon solutions - to reduce carbon dioxide emissions - is
now taking centre stage with growing acceptance of the uncertainty
surrounding global weather patterns. However, most product-related
sustainability improvements are incremental or based on re-design with
little radical innovation focused on significant reduction in materials and
energy use throughout the lifecycle.
Conference topics

services and technologies?
* How to tackle organisational challenges associated with sustainable
innovation?
